WATCH: ‘The Great Gatsby’ Trailer: There Will Be Screaming

A new trailer for   The Great Gatsby has hit the web. Let’s see if it has all the ingredients of a Baz Luhrmman joint:  Hot, youthful actors with well-defined jaws?  Check. Eye-popping colors? Check. Settings suitable for an Architectural Digest cover story, even when they depict abject poverty?  Check. Iconic period-piece story juxtaposed with hot-right-now soundtrack?  Check. Multiple scenes of operatic emotional outbursts? CHECK! Luhrmann may make cool films, but his cinematic world runs hot. So, it’s amusing — but not surprising — to see that there is quite a bit of screaming going on in this new clip, which you can watch in its entirety at the end of the post.  The first example can be found at the 35-second mark when Leonardo DiCaprio’s Jay Gatsby reacts rather emotionally to Joel Edgerton’s needling. (He plays Tom Buchanan.) From there, it’s a glimpse of the hell of war, as seen once more through the gaping mouth of DiCaprio: Next comes a shot of Tobey Maguire all dressed up and looking like he’s auditioning for the part of the Green Goblin in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man . A little later, we get Jason Clarke , who was so damn good in Zero Dark Thirty , pulling off a complex running-and-screaming combo. And then it’s back to Maguire for  what looks like a five-vein meltdown…. Put those all together and you get this:

Taylor Armstrong: My Husband’s Suicide Drove Me to Drink

It’s been far too long since Taylor Armstrong used her estranged husband’s suicide for profit or attention, hasn’t it? The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star is back at it, though, blogging this week about her state of mind – and the state of her liver – after Russell Armstrong took his own life in August 2011. “I went through about nine months where I was drinking to cope with the pain and the memories,” Armstrong wrote yesterday. “I was drinking to forget, to stop the recurring images in my head, to relax enough to try to sleep at night.” On Sunday’s episode of this Bravo hit, Kim and Kyle Richards approached Taylor about her drinking problem, causing Armstrong to reflect and now open up. “I was self-medicating and the sad truth is that I didn’t know another way to get through the days — and nights,” she wrote in her entry. “I was confronted with the truth that the life I thought I had was only an illusion. What I finally realized was that ‘pain waits for you.’ I would medicate for a day and the next morning all the emotions would come flooding back — not to mention the massive headache.” But that’s pretty much now all behind her, the reality star concludes: “Thankfully, I had an amazing support system and they helped me realize that it was time for me to feel my emotions and let the healing begin.” She may be healing off camera going forward, however. Rumors continue to float around that major changes are coming to The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills cast .

Sean Lowe: AshLee Frazier Elimination "Agonizing" on The Bachelor (But No Regrets)

Sean Lowe admits he was pretty broken up about eliminating AshLee Frazier on The Bachelor Monday, but at the same time, has no regrets about the decision. Writes the reality star in his weekly blog for People : “AshLee was a frontrunner from the very first night. She seemed to have everything that I was looking for, and I think she was the best for me on paper. “However, I was definitely aware that I didn’t seem to laugh as much with AshLee as I did with Lindsay and Catherine. AshLee was always very intense.” “I had to decide if I could be with someone who didn’t share my sense of humor. I’ve said from the very beginning that I was looking for my best friend.” “Being with [finalists Catherine Giudici and Lindsay Yenter ] seemed like they could be that. I didn’t have the same feeling when I was with AshLee.” “Of course, she brought me so much joy and I could picture her being my loving wife and a fantastic mother to our children, but I knew I needed more.” “I want to create a home full of laughter and to share my life with someone who is adventurous. And as much as I wanted that to be AshLee, I knew it wasn’t.” “Watching AshLee’s video blog was agonizing because I knew she had given her whole heart to me and I was about to break it. I absolutely dreaded the rose ceremony.” The Bachelor Clip – AshLee Eliminated “I did not want to blindside AshLee … After taking a deep breath and handing the last rose to Catherine, I was really upset to see AshLee’s reaction.” “Not because it made it more difficult for me, but because I knew she wouldn’t have closure if she didn’t allow me the chance to explain myself.” “All I wanted to do was console her and give her closure and talk it out. But I could tell that she wanted to leave my side as quickly as she could.” “Who was I to try and stop her? It was just agonizing.” We have no doubt, given Sean’s sincerity as a human being, that it was. Still, we feel bad for AshLee, as we’re sure he does as well. How can you not. That being said, did he make the right decision? Did she handle it the right way? And who should win now (see The Bachelor spoilers if you dare)? Tell us in the comments and by casting your votes … Did Sean make the right decision eliminating her?   Yes … she’s sweet but it wasn’t the right fit. No, Catherine should’ve been sent home! No, Lindsay should’ve been sent home! View Poll » Ash’s reaction to getting sent home: Right or wrong?   Right! Way to stay strong and stand tall! Wrong! Immature and ungrateful! Chris Cooper Cast as Norman Osborn in The Amazing Spider-Man 2!

Big casting news from the set of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 , which is already in production! Chris Cooper will join the cast of the comic book movie sequel, playing Norman Osborn! Osborn was played by Willem DaFoe, who definitely shares a similar look with Cooper, in the Sam Raimi trilogy. In that series, the character becomes the villainous Green Goblin, and reports are that Cooper’s Osborn will do the same, either in this film or the next one. Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone , Sally Field, and Martin Sheen will return to their roles, with Jamie Foxx, Paul Giamatti, Felicity Jones, Shailene Woodley, and Dane DeHaan joining on. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will hit theaters May 2, 2014. Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Sally Field (who was nominated for an Oscar for her role in Lincoln ), and Martin Sheen. Jamie Foxx ( Django Unchained ), Paul Giamatti, and Felicity Jones will also star. – See more at: http://www.moviefanatic.com/2013/02/the-amazing-spider-man-2-casting-news-chris-cooper-as-norman-osb/#sthash.bxnCmt6R.dpuf

Spider-Man’s New Costume Is Not That Much Different From His Old Costume

Get out your micrometers.   The Amazing Spider-Man   sequel doesn’t hit theaters until May2, 2014, but ComingSoon.net has an exclusive peek at the  new costume that Andrew Garfield will wear, and, well, unless you’re a Spider-man geek (like me), it doesn’t look all that much different than the old one. I’ve included an “After” and “Before” comparison, but the key changes are two: The webslinger’s face mask has bigger eyes and the leg-span on his spider chest logo isn’t so wide — a look that resembles comic artist Mark Bagley’s take on the webslinger during his record-breaking run on Marvel’s  Ultimate Spider-Man title in the early 2000s. Yeah, I know: not exactly a daring overhaul. THE NEW COSTUME THE PREVIOUS COS What does the new look say about the Spidey brand?  This is definitely wishful thinking on my part, but I choose to interpret it to mean that  The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will be more of a visual feast and the “Ultimate” Spider-Man movie. Certainly, a storyline that reportedly will include Electro ( Jamie Foxx ), the Green Goblin (the most excellent Dane DeHaan ) and the Rhino ( Paul Giamatti ) is promising, but it could also end up being as overstuffed as a Subway BMT sandwich. And that puts me in mind of Sam Raimi’s excruciatingly corny  Spider-Man 3 . At least that movie had a black costume. Speaking of that last villain, I can’t wait until the first shot of Giamatti as the Horned Hot Mess is leaked. Foxx, not so much.  I fear he’ll just end up looking like Static Shock, though I guess I’d prefer that  to him wearing a giant cut-out lightning-star on his head. As Count Floyd would say, “Verrry scary, kids!”  Here’s the official synopsis: In “The Amazing Spider-Man 2,” for Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield), life is busy — between taking out the bad guys as Spider-Man and spending time with the person he loves, Gwen (Emma Stone), high school graduation can’t come quickly enough. Peter hasn’t forgotten about the promise he made to Gwen’s father to protect her by staying away — but that’s a promise he just can’t keep. Things will change for Peter when a new villain, Electro (Jamie Foxx), emerges, an old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, and Peter uncovers new clues about his past.   [ ComingSoon.net ] Follow Frank DiGiacomo on  Twitter . Bono Calls ‘Spider-Man’ Musical ‘Pop-Up, Pop-Art Opera’

U2’s The Edge describes Broadway’s ‘Turn Off the Dark’ as ‘something that hasn’t been done before.’ By Rick Marshall Bono Photo: MTV News The budget-busting Broadway musical “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” made its long-awaited debut last weekend to preview audiences, and though Peter Parker’s bow was marred by production miscues and a laundry list of problems , one issue that audiences didn’t seem to have a problem with was the music. According to U2 bandmates Bono and The Edge, who composed the production’s score, that’s because comic books and rock and roll music are a natural fit. “There’s always been a thing with punk rock bands and comics,” Bono told MTV News during an interview last week. “It’s always been there. Even the Ramones, who are also from Queens [New York] like Peter Parker and Mary Jane, they covered the theme to Spider-Man.” “It goes through all, not just rock and roll culture, it’s in modern art,” he continued. “You see it in Roy Lichtenstein’s work, all the pop artists’ work; they all sample from comics.” Featuring high-flying stunts and a multitude of moving set pieces that put the audience in the middle of the action when Spider-Man battles Green Goblin, Carnage and the rest of the show’s villains , “Turn Off the Dark” is treading new ground. In fact, the ambitious uses to which director Julie Taymor has put the project’s record-breaking budget have effectively distanced it from its peers — and caused some confusion when it comes time to describe the show. “It’s like a graphic novel, but a three-dimensional one,” Bono ventured. “I’m calling it a pop-up, pop-art opera, because I’m pretentious. Julie’s calling it what?” “I think she’s calling it a rock-and-roll circus drama,” The Edge answered. “We don’t really know what to call it, because there are so many aspects to it,” he explained. “A great night out. I think that’s what it is.” The Edge acknowledged a similar difficulty in comparing “Turn Off the Dark” with anything that came before it. “It is elements of rock and roll, it’s elements of circus, it’s elements of opera, of musical theater,” he said. “It is so many different things, and when we started the process, we promised we’d do something that hasn’t been done before. And really, we, I think, have managed to do that.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com .
