Jay Electronica Disguised His Voice To Avoid Hip-Hop Prejudice

‘I was embarrassed from being from the South,’ he tells Mixtape Daily. By Shaheem Reid Jay Electronica Photo: MTV News The O.D.: A Mixtape Daily Exclusive Hearing the commanding voice of Jay Electronica on the microphone, one probably couldn’t detect his New Orleans roots. Years ago, like many MCs from the South, Electronica experienced some hip-hop prejudice when people heard the Southern twang in his voice — so he started disguising it. “I would go somewhere — I would go to an open mic and when they heard my accent and not understand what I’m saying, it would just be a door-closer,” Jay told MTV UK on a recent trip to Europe. “I made a point in being able to speak in a certain way that I wouldn’t get the door closed on me. All of these things make me who I am now, you know. “I have to admit, you know, a few years ago, I wouldn’t have admitted this — or maybe I wouldn’t have been conscious of it in a way to admit or be embarrassed — but in my earlier years from when I first left home, I was embarrassed from being from the South,” he added. “Not in general, but as a rapper because all of the negative things that people in the States put on the South. Like, ‘The South, they’re slow. They move slow, they think slow, they’re less intelligent. They’re less exposed, they’re underexposed, they’re more sheltered.’ So as a rapper — I’ve been rapping since I was 10 years old — I always had a feeling of ‘I’m gonna show you’ because we down here doing it. Not that I was embarrassed necessarily — I don’t know if that’s the correct word — but I know that when I left home, if someone had heard my accent and heard where I was from, the door was immediately closed.” Electronica said he had to adapt and become a chameleon on the mic. While trying to break into the music industry, he moved between different cities such as New York, Atlanta and Chicago. “I kind of stiff-armed my roots for a couple of years,” the Brooklyn transplant continued of his journey. “Then my sister told me one day, ‘You know, you act like you’re ashamed of being from home.’ It was like a reality check. I checked myself. I mean, this is years ago, but now I’m at a place where I understand where I’m from. I understand my culture and I’m more proud to be from there than associate with somewhere else.” Despite trying to hide his roots early on, Jay thinks back to the early days of New Orleans hip-hop with a smile. “I’m from New Orleans and there’s a certain type of music,” he explained. “I come from a bounce culture — bounce music. You been to New Orleans a couple times, you probably heard of the bounce music. It’s a part of me; I grew up with bounce music. It’s call-and-response, it’s trance, it’s tribal, it’s communal, it’s African, it’s based in Africa … the energy of it.” For other artists featured in Mixtape Daily, check out Mixtape Daily Headlines . Mary J. Blige Dishes On Her ‘Crazy’ Led Zeppelin Covers

‘I’ve listened to their music since I was a child,’ says the R&B diva, who recorded ‘Stairway to Heaven’ and ‘Whole Lotta Love.’ By James Montgomery, with reporting by Larry Carroll Mary J. Blige Photo: MTV News You wouldn’t peg Mary J Blige as the black-light-and-tapestry sort, but, as has become readily apparent in recent weeks, she absolutely loves Led Zeppelin. In early February, reports began circulating that Blige had re-recorded Zeppelin’s classic “Stairway to Heaven,” working with Travis Barker, “American Idol” judge Randy Jackson and guitarist Steve Vai on the track, which is slated to appear on the international reissue of her Stronger With Each Tear album, due Monday. But after she had recorded “Stairway,” Blige continued to get the Led out, covering another Zeppelin classic — the thunderous “Whole Lotta Love” — for the album too. And when MTV News caught up with her on the Black Women in Hollywood red carpet, she told us all about channeling her inner Robert Plant for the tracks, a process that came much easier than you’d probably imagine. “I did Led Zeppelin’s ‘Stairway to Heaven’ and ‘Whole Lotta Love’ — it’s crazy,” she said. “I am a Led Zeppelin fan. I’m not going to say I’ve been to their concerts, but I’ve listened to their music since I was a child, and it’s always moved me, especially ‘Stairway to Heaven,’ and ‘Whole Lotta Love’ is just fun.” Blige also said she recorded another new song — a “club record” called “I Can’t Wait” — for the re-release. And while it’s only slated to hit shelves outside the U.S., she hopes her fans will get a chance to hear all the new songs pretty soon. “I want y’all to hear it,” she laughed.

Nicole Scherzinger Calls Pussycat Dolls Lineup Shifts ‘Inevitable’

‘When it comes to girl groups, I think we did the best that we could for a good chunk of time,’ she tells MTV News. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Larry Carroll Nicole Scherzinger Photo: MTV News With the search on to fill out the Pussycat Dolls lineup after several members left the group to pursue other interests, the only surviving Doll, Nicole Scherzinger, admits that changes within the group are “inevitable.” But Scherzinger insisted that all the girls who left are like family to her, and she only wants them to find success and happiness in their new careers. “You know what? I’ve always looked at the Pussycat Dolls as a family,” she told MTV News. “We were really a sisterhood. We were together for six years, nonstop, 24/7. And I know a lot of them are pursuing their own solo projects and future endeavors, and I wish them nothing but the best.” While she’s still fully committed to the girl group, she knows that people sometimes need to move on to find their own happiness. “I believe they are beautiful and talented girls. And I believe in them, and I just want them to be happy,” she said. “Success means different things to different people, so whatever brings them happiness, I wish them that.” Still, she knows that in the world of girl groups, breakups and shakeups are the norm. “It’s kind of inevitable, right? When it comes to girl groups, I think we did the best that we could for a good chunk of time,” she explained. “We had an amazing time, and then people change and people grow, and sometimes things aren’t right for them. We’re all artists — just go and be creative. I love the PCD. It’s been a blessing for me. I don’t take it for granted, so I can’t wait to do more music.” Aside from PCD, Scherzinger will also be strutting her stuff on the upcoming season of “Dancing With the Stars.” Related Artists Pussycat Dolls

Matt Damon ‘Disappointed’ With President Obama’s Progress

After campaigning vigorously for Obama, the ‘Green Zone’ star voices dissatisfaction with president’s accomplishments thus far. By Larry Carroll Matt Damon Photo: Jason Kempin/ Getty Images After being one of the most prominent celebrities campaigning for change in 2008, Matt Damon is changing his tune these days, admitting that he is “disappointed” with President Barack Obama progress thus far, couching his comments by noting the inflated expectations that greeted Obama. While speaking with the press to promote his soon-to-be-released political thriller “Green Zone,” Damon reportedly told New York’s Daily News that he isn’t thrilled with how Obama’s first term has gone so far. “Everyone feels a little let down,” Damon said. “Because on some level, people expected all their problems to go away.” Damon is voicing his dismay about President Obama while promoting a movie about the failings of the previous administration. In “Green Zone,” Damon plays Roy Miller , a soldier who fights to expose the Bush regime’s lack of factual clarity regarding weapons of mass destruction. The film will no doubt bring Democrats out to the theater — but in his own personal beliefs, the always-upfront Damon refuses to tow the company line. “I’m disappointed in the health care plan,” Damon said in regards to Obama efforts that he feels are falling short. “And in the troop build-up in Afghanistan.” Less than two years ago, it was Damon who campaigned alongside Obama for “Hope” and “Change,” saying he would do “whatever it takes to help Obama win.” Nowadays, with a vocal segment of the population critically judging Obama’s first year in office, Damon is saying that people can’t sit around expecting the president to change the world. “Real change comes from everyday people,” he insisted. “You can’t wait for a leader.” A high-profile Democrat whose statements about Sarah Palin appearing on the scene “like a bad Disney movie” the spotlight when the former vice presidential candidate became a national figure, Damon went on to explain that his “Green Zone” character falls much more in line with Palin’s politics than his own. “Monty was a Republican — he voted for Bush,” explained. “He went to Iraq with the absolute conviction he was going to find the WMDs.” Damon added that he plans to stand by the president, but hopes that he gets more accomplished in his second year in office than he did in his first. “Politics is compromise,” the actor admitted. “I’m disappointed [in the compromises Obama has made].” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Michael Lynche, Didi Benami, More Make ‘American Idol’ Top 24

Katelyn Epperly, Lee Dewyze and others also make the cut. By Larry Carroll and Jim Cantiello Michael Lynche on “American Idol” Tuesday Photo: Fox Another episode has gone past, and the country’s vision of its next “American Idol” is becoming a bit clearer. On tonight’s show, seven contestants officially made the cut into the Top 24, and from talented future superstars to earnest underdogs to overachieving rookies, the eyes of the world are now upon them. Here’s our breakdown of the names announced tonight: Michael Lynche – A big man with a big heart, Michael is a new father with new hopes for superstardom thanks to his “Idol” success. Blessed with great guitar-playing skills to go along with his voice, Michael’s story isn’t without scandal — reports indicate that ,link type=”content” id=”1630479″> his father has spoken with the press , and in doing so committed a major “Idol” no-no. Will it result in his disqualification? Katelyn Epperly – Boasting a beautiful smile and bouncy blond hair, Katelyn has been performing in public since she was knee-high to a grasshopper. The product of a broken home, this Des Moines student brought the house down with Duffy’s “Syrup & Honey” — and is now looking at a future that seems mighty sweet. Didi Benami – Inspired by her deceased friend Rebecca, Didi also plays guitar and is somewhat reminiscent of Season 7 contestant Brooke White in both skill-set and emotional nakedness. If she continues to make the cut, look forward to lots of tears — and perhaps a sponsorship deal with Kleenex. Casey James – The chicks dig him. He’s a bad boy with a murky past — ’nuff said. Aaron Kelly – Our own Jim Cantiello calls him “Countryleta” and, sure enough, this 16-year-old high school student has the potential to be a country version of David Archuleta. The judges love a great story, and it’s hard to beat his: Adopted by his aunt after his parents could no longer care for him, Aaron won the “American Idol Experience” at Disney World and got a boost to the executive-producer round. Sounds like a true Cinderella story, from the very studio that gave us the big-screen tale. Lee Dewyze – Considered a dark horse, the guitar-playing balladeer with the sensitive eyes and poor man’s Mike Nesmith wool cap has solid stage presence and is intent to do “good things” in music. Is he a sleeping giant? We’ll find out soon enough. Todrick Hall – A pal of Fantasia’s, he worked with her on “The Color Purple” and is now turning hundreds of cast-away wannabes the color green — with envy. “I’m a dancer, that’s what I’ve been trained to do,” Hall has explained. “I’ve never had a voice lesson in my entire life, so for me to be competing with these people is just a crazy overwhelming experience.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.
