Source: Roy Rochlin / Getty Kanye West Is Suing Roc-A-Fella & EMI Over Unpaid Royalties and Publishing Rights According to TMZ , Kanye West has filed a lawsuit against Roc-A-Fella Records and EMI, the two companies responsible for launching his legendary career. Kanye reportedly filed 2 lawsuits this week against the companies, claiming he signed an exclusive recording agreement with the ROC and is asking for a declaration of his rights over a dispute he’s having and he wants money. His lawsuit against EMI states that they owe him some bread as well. According to TMZ, in 2003, the year before he came out with his breakout album, “College Dropout,” he signed a contract with EMI. The lawsuit claims by late 2011, Kanye had written solely or with other writers more than 200 songs and gave the rights to those songs to EMI. Those songs allegedly includes some of the most influential and successful songs in his catalog, although the suit isn’t specific as to what hits are up for discussion. Jay-Z reportedly sold his stake in Roc-A-Fella in 2014, so he has no direct connection to the company. Yeezy has also hired one of the most powerful firms in the country, Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, to represent him so its pretty obvious he’s means business.

Unless you’re a regular ESPN viewer, you’re probably not familiar with the name Britt McHenry. Unfortunately for the 28-year-old broadcaster, a whole lot of people are learning her name today in the worst way possible: Britt McHenry Tantrum Video In the above video, McHenry goes off on a tow truck company employee while attempting to get her car out of impound. The full video has to be seen to be believed, but here’s a rundown of McHenry’s most shocking insults: “That’s why I have a degree and you don’t…I wouldn’t work a scumbag place like this.” “It makes my skin crawl even being here.” “That’s all you care about is taking people’s money, with no education, no skill set…Just wanted to clarify that.” “Do you feel good about your job? So I could be a college dropout and do the same thing? Because I have a brain, and you don’t?” “Maybe if I lost some teeth they would hire me. Because yours look so stunning. That’s why I’m on television and you’re in f–king a trailer.” “Lose some weight, baby girl.” Yep, McHenry pretty much crossed off every item on the sadistic bully checklist. She clearly has lots of experience. ESPN announced today that she will be suspended for one week. Of course, this is just the latest in a long line of embarrassments for the once-respected sports news giant. The network’s controversial coverage of Michael Sam prompted viewers to rally a boycott last year. Shortly thereafter, ESPN suspended Bill Simmons (one of its few personalities that anyone actually likes) for – of all things – criticizing embattled NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. We’re beginning to think the best way ESPN execs can pay tribute to the late Stuart Scott is to take the network he helped build off the air before the current crop of a-holes does any more to sully its reputation. Yeezy performs a bombastic headlining set on Saturday in New Orleans. By Rebecca Thomas Kanye West performs at the 2011 Essence Fest on Saturday Photo: Erika Goldring/Getty Images NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana — Early on in Kanye West ‘s headlining set at the 2011 Essence Music Festival on Saturday Night, the Chicago MC stood on a raised platform suspended high above the cheering crowd. As he spit “Dark Fantasy,” the hook “Can we get much higher?” seemed a particularly apt way to describe not only his literal skyward stance at the New Orleans Superdome , but also what was to come that night. Yeezy was already knee-deep into career-defining classics like “Jesus Walks” “Can’t Tell Me Nothing” and “Diamonds are Forever,” when he told the elated NOLA fest he was “just getting started.” Rocking a white blazer, topped by a thick tangle of gold chains, and a pair of jeans and sneakers, the 34-year-old rapper bounded across the stage like a hyperactive teen, but there was no mistaking that West is a megastar, the “college dropout” who has more than made G.O.O.D. on his childhood dreams. As a small army of classical dancers — dressed in a variation of the phoenix costume worn by Selita Ebanks’ bird in West’s short film “Runaway” — flanked him, Kanye launched into a bombastic rendition of “Power”; “Devil in a New Dress” and “Hell of a Life” followed as ‘Ye tucked into singles and cuts from last year’s platinum-plus opus My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Performing to a massive audience that came to its feet (and stayed there all night) to the strains of ‘Ye and Jay-Z’s “H.A.M.,” the Chi-town MC with a Nas flow touched on his recent scandals, explaining that he stopped granting press interviews after taking lashings from media and bloggers. But he wasn’t all rebellious rapper: He danced, sang along and laughed his way through an old-school medley of personally influential music, and the playlist jumped from Al Green to ’90s soul groups like Jodeci and Shai. And West also emphasized that he knew who had held him down when, as he laughed, he “had a little too much too drink” before storming the MTV VMA stage back in 2009. Yeezy repeatedly thanked the predominantly African-American crowd for standing by him before going on to a stirring, church-tinged rendition of “Gold Digger.” The songs felt big and anthemic; the stage and stands, for instance, were bathed in lights and lasers for “All of the Lights” and “Stronger,” respectively. As he bounced back and forth between hits from his discography, including his College Dropout debut and his introspective, Auto-Tuned 808s & Heartbreak, the weight of West’s musical success was apparent. If there is a handbook for how to headline an expansive show, West should write it. Concertgoers appeared awestruck at the sheer spectacle and scale of the show, mouths gaping when they weren’t shouting lyrics back at the energetic MC. For the finale “Act 3” (a title card projected onto oversize screens flashed the show’s three-part progression), a billowing white tent was spread across the stage. In cocoon-like fashion, the dancers re-emerged in black tutus; West clad in his signature red suit. As the rapper knocked out the mournful, tinkling opener of “Runaway” on his MPC machine, the ballerinas circled and Pusha T turned up for his verse. Still, as large and loud as the show felt, Yeezy’s closing was as subtle. After rapping a heartfelt “Hey Mama” on his knees, with a nod to his late mother, Donda West , the star and his band, dancers and DJ took a ballet-company-style bow and walked offstage as the stadium lights went up. For clues, MTV News takes a closer look at clips for ‘Ye’s previous first singles. By Steven Roberts Kanye West 10.10.2005 Photo: MTV News Despite his newfound penchant for social media, Kanye West has kept quiet about what’s in store for the video for his newest single, “Power.” MTV News gathered a few clues, including a look at the videos for his previous first singles, for hints about what fans might expect from his latest. A photo from the Marco Brambilla-directed “video project” hit the Web last Thursday and it featured a sullen-faced West wearing his oversize, gold Horus chain and standing between rows of columns. Still, West urged fans to not get too excited — via his Twitter. “Preview of the ‘Power’ Trailer, it’s just a still pic. Don’t get to[o] hype.” Naturally, everyone got hyped, and West tweeted a link to a New York Times article about Brambilla’s involvement with the project soon after. Brambilla described the video as “kind of apocalyptic, in a very personal way.” It remains to be seen how it will shape up, but it seems certain the clip will set the tone for his still-untitled fifth album. “Through the Wire” The video for West’s triumphant, Chaka Khan-sampled first single from his debut LP, The College Dropout, featured a bulletin board of Polaroids documenting ‘Ye’s recovery from a near-fatal car crash and early footage of West’s road to recognition. With his jaw still wired shut, West narrates the story of how his life-threatening accident fueled his fire as an MC. The video reflected the mood of West’s debut, which saw the Chicago native detailing his early struggles trying to get put on in hip-hop after being overlooked and underappreciated. West spent years behind the scenes, producing for the likes of Jay-Z, Mos Def and Beanie Sigel, but received little encouragement when it came to his dreams of rapping. It wasn’t until his accident, however, that even he began to give it his all. “Diamonds From Sierra Leone” Following the enormous success of College Dropout, West upped the ante with the video for “Diamonds From Sierra Leone.” The black-and-white, Hype Williams-directed video finds West riding around in a Mercedes-Benz in Prague. As he explores the city’s lavish architecture, he’s haunted by the sins of wealth in the form of children who’ve died mining diamonds in West Africa. The video reflects the creative steps forward that Kanye took on his second album, Late Registration. West collaborated with composer/producer Jon Brion on the project, which combined hip-hop production, string arrangements, horn riffs and piano. “Can’t Tell Me Nothing” West again reached out to Hype Williams for the video for “Can’t Tell Me Nothing.” The visual was filmed in the desert with West rapping to a track featuring some Young Jeezy ad-libs. The barren backdrop was perfect for the boastful song, as Graduation became the album on which West began to separate himself from the rest of the rap universe. Famously criticized for not having a street record, Kanye dropped “Can’t Tell Me Nothing” and it became not only an anthem for the streets, but nearly every MySpace page. It was during this period that West also topped 50 Cent in a much-hyped sales duel. Following the album’s release, MTV named ‘Ye 2008’s “Hottest MC in the Game” “Love Lockdown” In all honesty, the video for “Love Lockdown” may not have played as large a role in helping to set the tone for 808s & Heartbreak. West had lost his mother, Donda West , in 2007 due to complications from surgery and broke off his engagement to his fianc
‘Twilight’ star reveals that new ‘do is for his role in the movie ‘Water for Elephants.’ By Josh Wigler Robert Pattinson on “Ellen” Wednesday Photo: Warner Bros. If you’ve grown attached to Robert Pattinson’s signature hairstyle, you’re in for a bit of a surprise. When the 24-year-old “Twilight” star appeared on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” on Wednesday (May 19), he showed off his brand-new look: a trimmed-down, shorter haircut. Asked by Ellen why he decided to cut his hair, Pattinson jokingly replied: “I got a terrible infestation of nits, and I had to shave it all off.” After Ellen informed the actor that “nits” are actually called “head lice” in the United States, she gently encouraged him not to “start that rumor.” “No, I’m doing a film,” he revealed of the real reason behind his haircut. Pattinson will star in “Water for Elephants,” a movie based on the novel by Sara Gruen about a college dropout and his experience as an animal caretaker for a traveling circus in the 1930s. Reese Witherspoon and Christoph Waltz co-star, and shooting begins this week. After he discussed the movie, Ellen asked Pattinson if he feels more comfortable actually acting than discussing the craft of acting in interviews, suggesting that the “Twilight” star is shy in real life. “I just like doing things where you have a little time to think about what you’re saying,” he confessed. “I’ve always had a problem actually thinking [in real time] before I open my mouth.” But Pattinson wasn’t bashful when asked about his experience as a dancer earlier in his life. “I did ballet when I was 10,” he revealed to cheers from the audience. “Then I realized that I was a guy, and I was the only guy in the class,” he laughed. “When you’re the only guy in your black leotard and your black jeans dancing to the ‘Batman’ theme tune, when everyone else is doing proper ballet, it only lasts so long. You can’t really go past 10!” What do you think of Rob’s new haircut? Let us know in the comments!
