George Romero Dies; Night Of the Living Dead Director Was 77

Sad news out of Hollywood today, as one of the most revered horror film directors of the modern era has passed away. It was reported this afternoon that George A. Romero, director of the Night Of the Living Dead series and creator of the zombie film genre, has died unexpectedly at the age of 77. Romero’s death was confirmed by his longtime manager, Chris Roe. “Legendary filmmaker George A. Romero passed away on Sunday July 16, listening to the score of ‘The Quiet Man,’ one of his all-time favorite films, with his wife, Suzanne Desrocher Romero, and daughter, Tina Romero at his side,” read a statement issued by Roe. “He died peacefully in his sleep, following a brief but aggressive battle with lung cancer, and leaves behind a loving family, many friends, and a filmmaking legacy that has endured, and will continue to endure, the test of time.” Romero rose to fame in the late ’60s, following the surprise success of his first film, Night Of the Living Dead . The movie spawned five sequels, including the most recent installment, 2009’s Suvival Of the Dead . Romero’s knack for blending scares and social commentary resulted in an entirely new subgenre and helped horror films to gain increased respect from both critics and mainstream audiences. As many are pointing out today, it’s impossible to overstate Romero’s impact on popular culture. He’s been cited as a major influence by such beloved genre auteurs as Stephen King and Joss Whedon, and though he publicly expressed his disdain for the series, there would be no Walking Dead franchise were it not for the aesthetic pioneered by Romero. In addition to his wildly popular zombie films, Romero has received acclaim for helming such horror films as Season Of the Witch , Martin , and The Crazies . Tributes to Romero from some of the biggest names in the industry have been pouring in on social media: “Sad to hear my favorite collaborator–and good old friend–George Romero has died. George, there will never be another like you,” Stephen King wrote. View Slideshow: Celebrities Who Died in 2017: In Memoriam “RIP George Romero. Zombies, yes. But…go watch MARTIN. Teenage isolation mutated into vampirism. Online culture as plague” tweeted Patton Oswalt. “Rest In Peace George Romero. A great artist, innovator and creator. He changed everything,” Anthony Bourdain commented. Romero is survived by his wife, Suzanne, and two children.

Martin Landau Dies; Legendary Actor Was 89

Martin Landau, a veteran actor whose work has spanned the big screen and small screen, died Saturday afternoon at UCLA Medical Center. He was 89 years old. According to TMZ, which broke this sad piece of news, Landau passed away at approximately 1:30 p.m. local time. He had just recently been hospitalized for unknown reasons and had suffered a few health-related complications before passing away. Among the many impressive credits to his name, Landau starred in such films as Alfred Hitchcock’s North by Northwest, Tim Burton’s Ed Wood (for which he won an Academy Award) and Cleopatra. Within the realm of television, Landau is likely best known for his role on the series Mission: Impossible. He left that show after three seasons due to a contract dispute. Landau, who started work as a cartoon, got his major acting breaking playing a gay henchman in the aforementioned Hitchcock classic, which came out in 1959. At that time, of course, portraying a homosexual man in a movie was not a common occurrence. Landau received a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his performance in Tucker: The Man and His Dream (1988) and again a year later in the same category for Woody Allen’s Crimes and Misdemeanors. He finally won his lone Oscar in 1994. Perhaps most famously, however, the beloved actor actually turned down the role of Mr. Spock on the NBC series Star Trek; it ended up going to Leonard Nimoy, of course. “I turned down Star Trek. It would’ve been torturous,” the star said during a 2011 edition of the PBS documentary series Pioneers of Television, adding at that time: “I would’ve probably died playing that role. I mean, even the thought of it now upsets me. “It was the antithesis of why I became an actor. I mean, to play a character that Lenny (Nimoy) was better suited for, frankly, a guy who speaks in a monotone who never gets excited, never has any guilt, never has any fear or was affected on a visceral level. “Who wants to do that?” Throughout his amazing career, Landau befriended such legends as James Dean and Jack Nicholson, while he briefly dated Marilyn Monroe. Toward the end of his career Landau earned Emmy Award nominations for playing the father of Anthony LaPaglia’s character on Without a Trace and for guest-starring as an out-of-touch movie producer on Entourage. He portrayed billionaire J. Howard Marshall, the 90-year-old husband of Anna Nicole Smith, in a 2013 Lifetime biopic about the late model; and starred opposite Christopher Plummer in Remember in 2015. Expect many tributes from Hollywood greats to come pouring in as news of his death spreads. Altogether, he appeared in close to 200 movies and television shows. May Martin Landau rest in peace. Michael Douglas: Smoking After Beating Throat Cancer?

Is throat-cancer survivor Michael Douglas smoking again, just months after enduring grueling treatment for the disease? Star and Radar say he is . The photos appear in the new issue of the celebrity gossip tabloid and were allegedly taken July 21. He is shown on a yacht in Porto Venere, Italy. The legendary actor is clearly smoking in the cover photo, and in more images inside the magazine. The question is when they were really taken. Michael Douglas went through chemotherapy and radiation last year, bravely beating cancer , making these new photos – if legit – even more stunning. The oldest, easiest trick in the tabloid book is the file photo, though. Using an old or misleading image to make a cover stand out is par for the course. We can’t guarantee that’s what’s going on here, but we also wouldn’t bet against that. It’s worth noting that he was a heavy smoker prior to 2010. There’s also the possibility that he was smoking medicinal marijuana, but even that would still expose Douglas to potentially damaging side effects. Douglas has yet to comment about the photos.

India’s Chaplin-loving town

A small town in the western Indian state of Gujarat is an unlikely haven for Charlie Chaplin impersonators. The BBC's Soutik Biswas travelled to the town of Adipur to find out why. In the rising heat of a flaming Indian summer, more than 100 people have gathered in a small town in Gujarat to celebrate Charlie Chaplin's birthday. There are girls and boys, men and women. They are young and old, fit and feeble. They have all trooped out into the streets of Adipur dressed up like the legendary actor's tramp – toothbrush moustache, bowler hat, scruffy black suit, cane. What binds them is a love of Chaplin's cinema – most are members of the Charlie Circle, a local fan club which has been celebrating the actor's birthday every April since 1973. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/8631348.stm added by: Burnside359
