High School Disciplines Fighting Boys With Forced Public Hand-Holding

An Arizona school district has condemned one of its high schools for disciplining two boys for fighting … by forcing them to hold hands in front of their classmates as punishment. Earlier this week, the two students at Westwood High School in Mesa, Ariz., who have not been named, were faced with two options after getting into a fight: Suspension from school Sitting in chairs in the courtyard and holding hands for 15 minutes during lunch They opted for the latter, and were ridiculed by their peers. “Kids were laughing at them and calling them names, asking, ‘Are you gay?’” student Brittney Smyers told ABC affiliate KNXV, while photos began to circulate online. On one Facebook posting, users commented that the public punishment was not appropriate, as it positions the teens as targets for taunting and name-calling. Others said the punishment was anti-gay, as it implies two males holding hands is embarrassing. Helen Hollands, director of communication and marketing for Mesa Public Schools, said the school’s principal, Tim Richard, who is in his first year at Westwood, had the idea. “He’s done some great things there,” Hollands said. “He’s focused highly on maintaining a standard where [ideally] no students are failing a class.” Once the school district got wind of Richard’s unique punishment, however, it issued a statement saying that it doesn’t condone what the school did: “Mesa Public Schools is dedicated to maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment.” “The district has guidelines for appropriate student discipline and our site administrators have the authority to impose consequences within our policies and regulations.” “The district does not condone the choice of in-school discipline given these students, regardless of their acceptance or willingness to participate.” “District leadership will address this matter with the school principal and review district protocol regarding student discipline with all administrators.” Hollands said that the district is well aware that many perceived the discipline as bullying and biased. “The district is looking at how the actions have been perceived,” she said of the now infamous and viral incident. “That’s a very important piece to know.” Disciplining kids with hand-holding: Right or wrong?   Right idea, sends a strong message! Wrong, humiliating and unfair! View Poll »

Peace, See Ya Later: Solange Knowles Chunks A Deuce To Carol’s Daughter Over “Wrong Message” About Natural Hair

Soli says she is not the leader of the natural hair movement Solange Knowles Ends Relationship With Carol’s Daughter Via Essence Solange Knowles was the face of hair care brand Carol’s Daughter’s Transitioning Movement from April 2011 until recently. The 26-year-old revealed in a recent interview with Lurve magazine the true reason why she parted ways with the company, saying it was a constant battle to get a certain message across. “I’m actually no longer a part of Carol’s Daughter, but throughout my entire time working with them, I was constantly fighting for the right message to be heard,” she said. “The message that, the way we wear our hair is a personal choice, there’s no right or wrong way; one way doesn’t make us more intelligent, or more superficial, and everyone makes that choice for very different reasons.” Against some adversity, Knowles has stood by her decision to wear her natural hair and has even shot back at critics that she refers to as the “natural hair police.” After a blog called her hair “unkept,” the singer and model responded via Twitter saying, “I don’t want to talk about no damn hair… no mo. I never painted myself as the team natural vice president.” Translation: “Deez ninjas tryna hold me back!” In a statement to the Huffington Post, Steve Stoute, the chairman and lead investor of Carol’s Daughter, responded to Knowles’ departure by saying, “Carol’s Daughter celebrates women who embody beauty by nature such as Solange. We value our relationship with her and the women we were able to empower by partnering with such an authentic spirit.” What do you think of Solange’s decision? Should she be more outspoken about the natural hair movement when so many women look to her for inspiration? Image via Tumblr

Weekend Receipts: Why You Shouldn’t Cry For John Carter Just Yet

Everything went pretty much according to plan at the box office over the weekend: Scurrilous liberal plot The Lorax indoctrinated enough kids and families to reign over a second consecutive week, while Disney’s super-expensive sci-fi gamble John Carter settled somewhat anemically into second place. But it’s not all bad for our boy on Barsoom. Your Weekend Receipts are here. 1. Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax Gross: $39,100,000 ($121,950,000) Screens: 3,746 (PSA $10,438) Weeks: 2 (-44.3%) The year’s biggest hit to date achieved that distinction in nine days, as opposed to roughly three full weeks for the likes of Safe House and The Vow . And there was even one less hour this weekend. Summer is here! Break up The Lorax ! 2. John Carter Gross: $30,603,000 (new) Screens: 3,053 (PSA: $4,487) Weeks: 1 Right or wrong, the widely reported $250 million (at least) price tag will precede any and every conversation regarding John Carter as long as people are talking about John Carter . Which may be longer than the sluggish domestic gross implies — though not that much longer — if the rest of the world has anything to say about it: Andrew Stanton’s epic took in nearly $70 million abroad , including the fourth-highest debut ever in Russia. The takeaway remains relatively grim: No blockbuster status is foreseen, but at least the unprecedented write-down foreseen at Disney may not be that bad. Happy Monday? 3. Project X Gross: $11,550,000 ($40,125,000) Screens: 3,055 (PSA $3,781) Weeks: 2 (Change: -45.1%) Not a remarkable hold, but considering the competition both above and below it &mdash plus the long-ish tails of several of the year’s bigger releases to date — Warner Bros. will take it. The only question remaining: What’s the threshold to greenlight the sequel? 4. Silent House Gross: $7,010,000 (new) Screens: 2,124 (PSA $3,300) Weeks: 1 Here is a conversation sure to have ensued in roughly 750 theaters screening the very soft-performing Elizabeth Olsen thrller: Viewer 1: “That doesn’t look like Ryan Reynolds.” Viewer 2: “When does Denzel show up?” Viewer 1: “Are we in the right theater?” Viewer 3: “Shhhh!” [Throws popcorn] 5. Act of Valor Gross: $7,000,000 ($56,100,597) Screens: 2,952 (PSA $2,372) Weeks: 3 (Change: -48.4%) Slowly, inexorably, probably futilely, Relativity continues to push its Navy SEALs experiment toward $100 million theatrically. Look for a special St. Patrick’s Day weekend campaign pushing Act O’ Valor : “Erin go BLAM,” “Kiss me, I shot Osama bin Laden in the face,” etc. Or… not. [Figures via Box Office Mojo ] Follow S.T. Miley Cyrus Quotes Einstein, Responds to Twitter Backlash

Miley Cyrus has responded to those who believe she totally dissed her religion on Twitter this week. A quick refresher: The actress quoted theoretical physicist Lawrence Krauss on Sunday night, citing a long passage from the doctor about the scientific creation of the universe that included the line “Forget Jesus. Stars Died So You Could Live.” Many followers took major exception to the supposedly anti-Christian message. Now, Miley has shot back with a nuanced, mature, thoughtful response. “How can people take the love out of science and bring hate into religion so easily?” she wrote. “It makes me sad to think the world is this way. Like Einstein says ‘Science without religion is lame. Religion without science is blind.'” Wow. Well said. Your move, critics. [Photo: WENN.com]

Tommy Jordan on Laptop Shooting: No Regrets!

He may have shot up his daughter’s laptop to send a message, but Tommy Jordan doesn’t regret it – and more importantly, he and Hannah Marie have made amends. Nearly a month after posting his now-infamous video, he spoke on Today about his eight-minute “Facebook parenting” guide and their relationship since. The video has 10 times more likes than dislikes on YouTube, and he has wide support in THG’s poll (below). But Jordan admits he might not do it again. Tommy Jordan on Today Show “A lot of people took eight minutes of my life to judge me, and about 30 seconds of those where I read Hannah’s note to judge her,’’ he told Matt Lauer. “I have a great daughter. She made a mistake. I made a mistake that day. I stand behind what I did, but the consequences were a lot larger than hers.’’ Asked if he has any regrets, he said, “Considering what’s come of it and the national and almost international conversation that it sparks, no I don’t.’’ But would he do it again? “It would be a tough decision to know what I know now,” he paused, then admitted. “It’s brought a lot of stress on my family.” Facebook Parenting: Dad Shoots Daughter’s Computer I’m sure I’d have to weigh, ‘Is the international story that seems to be talked about more important than my family’s peace of mind?’ So that would be tough.” Tommy Jordan shooting his daughter’s laptop: Right or wrong?

Michelle Obama, Jill Biden Booed by NASCAR Fans

First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden, wife of the Vice President, served as grand marshals yesterday prior to a NASCAR race at Homestead-Miami Speedway. They were on hand to promote the military family-based project Joining Forces, starting the race along with a wounded veteran named Andrew Berry and his family. And the famous wives were audibly booked upon being introduced to the crowd. Hear for yourself: Michelle Obama Booed by NASCAR Fans The sports governing body downplayed the response via a statement by Marcus Jadotte, NASCAR vice president of public affairs. It reads: “The NASCAR community and the vast majority of those attending our race Sunday welcomed the first lady and Dr. Jill Biden and the military families in attendance. We are proud to support military families across the country and proud to support the Joining Forces initiative.” But, come on, we have ears. We can hear the negative reaction of many in attendance. Which leads us to ask: Booing the First Lady during a non-political appearance? Right or wrong?

A Video I made for Justin Bieber using the song Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield. Thanks to the sites i got the pics and videos from. Lyrics: I am unwritten, can’t read my mind, I’m undefined I’m just beginning, the pen’s in my hand, ending unplanned Staring at the blank page before you Open up the dirty window Let the sun illuminate the words that you could not find Reaching for something in the distance So close you can almost taste it Release your inhibitions Feel the rain on your skin No one else can feel it for you Only you can let it in No one else, no one else Can speak the words on your lips Drench yourself in words unspoken Live your life with arms wide open Today is where your book begins The rest is still unwritten Oh, oh, oh I break tradition, sometimes my tries, are outside the lines We’ve been conditioned to not make mistakes, but I can’t live that way Staring at the blank page before you Open up the dirty window Let the sun illuminate the words that you could not find Reaching for something in the distance So close you can almost taste it Release your inhibitions Feel the rain on your skin No one else can feel it for you Only you can let it in No one else, no one else Can speak the words on your lips Drench yourself in words unspoken Live your life with arms wide open Today is where your book begins Feel the rain on your skin No one else can feel it for you Only you can let it in No one else, no one else Can speak the words on your lips Drench yourself in … http://www.youtube.com/v/uiMn-AUWFtc?version=3&f=videos&app=youtube_gdata See the original post: Unwritten (Justin Bieber Video) With Lyrics

‘X Factor’ Will Be A Reality Show ‘On Steroids’

Creative director of Simon Cowell’s upcoming competition series tells MTV News it will be ‘like the VMAs every week.’ By Jocelyn Vena Brian Friedman Photo: MTV News Fans have been wondering for months now what to expect when Simon Cowell’s Stateside interpretation of “The X Factor” starts up on September 21. According to the Fox show’s creative director, Brian Friedman, it’s going to be … big. “Basically ‘The X Factor’ in the U.S. is every reality show you’ve [ever] seen on steroids,” he told MTV News when we caught up with him on the 2011 VMA black carpet. “It is like the VMAs every week.” Friedman — a veteran choreographer who has worked with a number of pop stars, most notably Britney Spears — has a history with “The X Factor” franchise. He not only hosted the British version for some time, but he also served as its creative director. The Fox show will step up its game week after week to ensure that it’s all about going big or going home, Friedman promised. “The performances that we do on there are boundless; there are no boundaries,” he continued. “We don’t stand inside a box. There is no right or wrong. Every rule you could possibly break in TV, [we do]. So expect to be wowed every week.” Friedman joins host Steve Jones , as well as the judges: Cowell and his former “American Idol” co-star Paula Abdul , record executive L.A. Reid and Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger “American Idol” has always had scratch-your-head-type contestants, and earlier this year Cowell confessed that he hoped to keep that spirit alive on his new show. “I love unusual people. I always say, you’ve got to embrace the madness,” Cowell laughed. “I like that we’re going to be very open-minded. I think we’re going to have good enough people on this panel that we’re not gonna miss out on anyone who’s got potential.” Will you be watching “The X Factor” when it premieres this month? Tell us in the comments!
