Racist Rides: Pittsburgh Public Buses To Have Backwards Bigoted “Ziggin Zaggin” Slogans Removed

What is “Ziggin” spelled backwards? Yeah… Allegheny Port Authority To Remove Racist Slogans From Public Buses Via TribLive Port Authority of Allegheny County said Wednesday it will remove promotional slogans on nine buses that appear to spell a racial slur when read backward or viewed in a mirror. Transit agency spokesman Jim Ritchie said a driver complained Tuesday after seeing the message “Ziggin Zaggin” on a bus in her vehicle’s rear-view mirror. “Port Authority certainly did not intend for this message to offend anyone,” agency spokesman Jim Ritchie said. “However, due to recent complaints about how this message appears when read backward, we have decided to remove the message from our vehicles,” Ritchie said. “We apologize to anyone who may have been offended.” “Ziggin Zaggin” was part of a larger promotional campaign that put messages such as “Rockin’ Rollin’,” “Movin’ Groovin’,” and “Movin’ Shakin’ ” on the sides of buses in 2003. All of the buses bearing those slogans are within a year of being retired from Port Authority’s 700-bus fleet. Ritchie said agency workers would peel off the decals. If the outline of the letters still can be seen when the letters are gone, Ritchie said the agency would “find a way to cover it with advertising of some sort” within the next couple of weeks. The work will “probably cost us nothing extra,” Ritchie said. Is this petty or do you think people have the right to be offended by this slogan? Image via CBS (Pittsburgh)

Racist And Sexist Or Nah? “Scary Bi***” Ads For New Octavia Spencer Show “Red Band Society” Yanked From City Buses After Public Outcry

Oooh they so sensitive ! Fox TV Show Ads Removed From Buses Over Complaints Of Racism And Sexism A number of ads featuring Octavia Spencer’s face next to the words “Scary B***h” had to be removed from L.A. buses this week after complaints they were racist AND sexist. Via Los Angeles Times reports : An advertisement for the new Fox television show “Red Band Society” was abruptly pulled from Los Angeles Metro buses Thursday after activists complained it was racist and offensive. The ads for the series that premiered this week show actress Octavia Spencer next to the words “Scary Bi**h.” Metropolitan Transportation Authority spokesman Mark Littman said the agency decided to remove the ad because that label “denigrates women.” “That speaks for itself,” Littman said. “That was not acceptable.” The ads, which have been up for five weeks, will be removed from 190 Metro buses as soon as possible, said Metro spokesman Dave Sotero. The announcement was made Thursday at a Metro committee meeting where a few dozen protesters showed up to speak against the ads. Among them was Jasmyne Cannick, who said the nickname perpetuates negative stereotypes about black women. “I don’t know if I find it more offensive because I’m black, or more offensive because I’m a woman,” said Cannick, 36. “I sometimes think our city forgets that there are black people that still live here and call Los Angeles home.” A Fox spokeswoman said in a statement that network executives were notified Thursday morning of the concerns around the ads and “immediately offered to remove the language.” “Metro Los Angeles ultimately decided to take down the ads, and we respect that decision,” the spokeswoman said. “We sincerely apologize if the copy was offensive to viewers.” Do you think it was a legit complaint or are people overreacting? Michael Moore tells Democrats: ‘Find your spine’ on health care

Sans video camera, filmmaker Michael Moore on Tuesday turned his megaphone on the current health care system and those Blue Dog Democrats he claims are “dogging” the health care debate. Moore, an advocate of a single-payer, government-run health care system, called the current setup “cruel,” and said that two-thirds of Americans support a single-payer system and would punish those Democrats who steer the conversation away from that option. “To the Democrats in Congress,” Moore said, “find your spine.

Nanomaterials under study by the E.P.A.

The Environmental Protection Agencydetailed its plans on Tuesday for research into the possible health and environmental risks of nanomaterials, tiny substances that are finding growing use in products like sunscreens and industrial adhesives. The document, issued in draft form in June, calls for work to identify sources of nanomaterials, which can measure as little as perhaps one-10,000th the width of a human hair
