Amanda Bynes: "Gravely Disabled" By Mental Illness, Placed on Extended Psychiatric Hold

Amanda Bynes was just placed on an extended, 30-day psychiatric hold after doctors argued that the star is “gravely disabled” by mental illness. Bynes was set to return to court and try to win her freedom , but doctors said she was not even well enough to leave the hospital to attend today’s hearing. Doctors went to a judge who went to the hospital to conduct the emergency hearing, according to TMZ, and the judge granted their request to keep her there. The actress’ 5150 psychiatric hold , which was already extended from 72 hours to two weeks, has now been lengthened for at least the next 30 days. Taking away someone’s freedom is a serious thing, and doctors can only do so if the patient is deemed “gravely disabled as a result of a mental disorder.” Amanda’s parents are still expected to pursue a temporary conservatorship that would allow her parents to control her finances and medical affairs. The status of that request is not entirely clear at this time, but what is clear is that Amanda’s severe mental illness is likely worse than initially believed. The 27-year-old was hospitalized after setting a driveway on fire in her hometown of Thousand Oaks, and is believed to have schizophrenic tendencies. We wish her nothing but the best and hope she can find a course of treatment that helps her lead a healthy, productive and fulfilling life once again.

DVD: Where’s the Love for Tamara Drewe?

You don’t have to go to Armond White-ian lengths to be a contrarian; watch enough movies over the course of a year, and at some point you’re going to veer away from popular opinion. Whether you love a movie that’s roundly despised or completely miss the charms of the feel-good film of the season, it’s inevitable that the regular moviegoer will divert from the vox populi. Which brings me to one of my favorite films of 2010, Tamara Drewe (out this week from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment).

Did Tony Blair Swipe Dialogue from His Character in The Queen?

Screenwriter Peter Morgan spent three films chronicling incidents in the life of former British prime minister Tony Blair, and the attention may have gone to Blair’s head. In his new memoir A Journey , Blair apparently swaps a real-life anecdote for one that Michael-Sheen-as-Blair had in Morgan’s The Queen .

Tony Blair Accused of Ripping Off The Queen

The Queen screenwriter Peter Morgan has accused former British prime minister Tony Blair of plagiarizing his script. In his memoirs, Blair’s account of what was said when he went to kiss hands with the Queen Elizabeth II in 1997 is apparently very similar to the dialogue that Morgan wrote. Morgan surmises that either he guessed exactly right in the script (unlikely), that Blair decided he liked Morgan’s lines enough to use them, or that the former prime minister simply confused the film with the actual events. Blair claims to have never seen the film. Alternate guess: Blair’s ghost writer uncovered a vast conspiracy between the lines of what was actually said and used Morgan’s dialogue to cover himself. Woody Allen, Jean-Luc Godard (and No Terrence Malick) Among Selections for Cannes 2010

The line-up for the 2010 Cannes Film Festival was announced this morning from Paris, and first things first: There is no Terrence Malick on this list. His Brad Pitt/Sean Penn-starring cosmic mindblower Tree of Life won’t be finished in time and/or the famously publicity-shy filmmaker just doesn’t want to deal with the world media, so instead you get slouches like Woody Allen, Jean-Luc Godard, Stephen Frears and Oliver Stone (out of competition) and Mike Leigh, Abbas Kiarostami, Alejandro González Iñárritu and Apichatpong Weerasethakul (in competition). Doug Liman is the only American vying for the Palme d’Or, premiering his Valerie Plame film Fair Game , while his countrymen Lodge Kerrigan and Gregg Araki occupy spots in the Un Certain Regard and Midnight sections. Oh, and Blue Valentine is going — sorry, France ! Click through for the complete line-up, which will unspool in the week or so following Robin Hood ‘s May 12 opening-night premiere.
