Folks like Steven Soderbergh know it can be a long, long road to retirement. But there are still (at least) two titles to come, including Side Effects . With this year’s box office lauded strip down Magic Mike as well as his other 2013 shoot Behind the Candelabra on the make, his segue out from the director’s chair may linger a year or two. There are promo obligations post-post production after all… And retirement is proving to be good business, anyway. After cashing in with $130 million for this year’s The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel , a second one is in the offing . Maybe after Soderbergh is finished with these, he can really embrace the retirement thing with a Best Exotic Marigold Hotel 3 ? Starring Rooney Mara, Channing Tatum, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Jude Law (many of whom are Soderbergh-vets), Side Effects revolves around a young woman who relies on prescription drugs to deal with anxiety as her husband heads home from prison. As might be expected, there’s also more going on as the trailer suggests, with the pulse of anxiety hitting a crescendo. The film is due out February 8th. Thoughts, Movieliners? Should Soderbergh cancel his retirement plans?
He may look like an impossibly chiseled slab of flesh – and, well, he is – but this past weekend Channing Tatum proved to America (and that foreign country called Hollywood) that he is capable of much more. With Magic Mike wildly overperforming at the box office to the tune of $39 million, it’s time to acknowledge that this one-time piece of eye-meat has opened the door to a new chapter in his career. It’s widely known that it was Tatum who approached auteur Steven Soderbergh with the idea for Magic Mike , as the film was inspired by Tatum’s own experiences as a male stripper when he was 18. For as long as he’s been entertaining audiences, Tatum has been seen primarily as nothing more than an object, but his aspirations are clearly to have a career that involves some brains, too. Below, we take a look at where one of the most buzzworthy actors in the world is headed, by way of his upcoming films. The Bitter Pill Tatum will appear opposite Rooney Mara in his next feature, which is apparently Soderbergh’s penultimate flick. The film stars Mara as a woman caught in a love triangle between her husband (Tatum), who has recently gotten out of prison, and her doctor, played by Jude Law. Catherine Zeta-Jones and Vinessa Shaw round out the cast. The film is billed as a “psychopharmacological thriller,” so whatever that means, expect a dark, gritty, intellectual tone, somewhere between Soderbergh’s last two pics: Contagion and Haywire (which also featured Tatum). This is clearly a film that should enable Tatum to show off some acting chops once again, and going up against a natural talent like Mara is sure to bring out the best in him. G.I. Joe: Retaliation Well, the guy’s got to put bread on the table, too. The last G.I. Joe film was woefully received by critics, but it made $300 million worldwide, enough to cover its $175 million budget (although with P&A expenditures and how revenue is divided, it’s unlikely Paramount made real money on it). In any event, this is the side of Tatum we’ve come to expect to see – but how much longer he’ll work these roles remains in question. Clinging on to action films for as long as possible is certainly a plausible route, but as the careers of co-star Bruce Willis or, say, Harrison Ford indicate, it’s not always the wisest one. Foxcatcher This is a great example of the type of highbrow fare Tatum has had trouble breaking into (until now). A long-gestating project for Moneyball helmer Bennett Miller, Foxcatcher is based on the true story of an eccentric, schizophrenic millionaire who would up building an enormous wrestling facility on his property – and then killing a US Olympic team wrestler. Mark Ruffalo will play the wrestler, Tatum will play his brother, and Steve Carrell has been cast as the schizophrenic. It’s obviously not the lead role, but visibility in a project like this – which could even be up for awards consideration – is a step in the right direction for Tatum’s serious side. White House Down This, like G.I. Joe , is basically standard genre fare, albeit with a little more prestige: Tatum will play a Secret Service agent tasked with protecting the President (rumor has it Jamie Foxx will play the commander-in-chief) from an imminent terrorist threat. Maggie Gyllenhaal is also on board. The film will be going head-to-head next year with a similarly themed project titled Olympus Has Fallen , starring Gerard Butler. (Now that’s a guy who needs a career makeover!) Jupiter Ascending The Wachowskis’ follow-up to the hotly anticipated Cloud Atlas adaptation will be an original film whose concept makes Cloud Atlas seem simplistic. (If you haven’t read Cloud Atlas , get thee to a bookstore!) The idea, in a nutshell, is that the film takes place in a world where DNA is the most highly prized commodity, and different strains of DNA enable humans to achieve different goals. One woman (Mila Kunis) has a perfect genetic code – too perfect! – and so bounty hunter Channing Tatum is dispatched to, well, dispatch of her. Unfortunately for the powers that be, they fall in love. Whether they succeed or fail, the Wachowskis always aim big, and this film has the potential to be a huge crowd-pleaser in the realm of Blade Runner or, of course, The Matrix . Lego: The Piece of Resistance Tatum will voice Superman in this animated film from Phil Lord and Chris Miller , who directed him in 21 Jump Street , another recent profile-booster that showcased Tatum’s talents. Tatum hasn’t done an animated film yet, so this is a smart expansion of what he’s capable of from a business standpoint, as well as with regard to his personal brand; being able to appeal to kids helps soften him out from getting typecast as the guy in the action movies. Plus: It’s Channing Tatum as Superman – LEGO Superman, but still. The Contortionist’s Handbook This adaptation of a 2002 novel has been in development since 2010, but Tatum (who is also a co-producer) is still looking to get it made. Tatum would star as a forger and con artist who is constantly creating new identities in order to evade the law. There’s no director attached, so it’s tough to say which direction the adaptation might head in, but the novel was released to acclaim upon publication, and it sounds like it might turn into a passion project for Tatum. This week in ill-advised moves by would-be comeback starlet Lindsay Lohan : A photo shoot with skeeze-photography specialist Terry Richardson in which Lohan plays with what appears to be a real gun, putting it to her head and even in her mouth. Fun! Richardson, who of late has cornered the market on jiggly Kate Upton coverage, posted the Lohan photos to his Tumblr ” Terry’s Diary ” today but has since apparently taken them down. Of course, this being the internet, nothing’s ever deleted fast enough, or permanently. The photos that remain up feature Lohan in a sheer bra, which might be headline-making enough on their own if the gun pics weren’t so much more disturbing (via Oh No They Didn’t ): After making their way around the blogosphere, the pics have disappeared from Richardson’s Tumblr, and for good reason; this is the last thing Lohan’s team needs as they attempt to explain away her brush with paramedics the other week, and her car accident before that. It’s unclear when these photos were taken, though the original post says they were taken at the Chateau Marmont. And what does it mean? Cavalier art shoot or red flag? Meanwhile, Richardson’s Tumblr features a bounty of titillating artsy-exploitative photos and videos of Upton, including the palate-cleansing, strategically-featured distraction GIF entitled ” Kate Upton getting out of a pool. ” And for more fun with starlets, you can see basically all of Paz De La Huerta ( NSFW ) as photographed by Richardson. The Magic Mike director gave insight into his future endeavors once his hard stop to movie making begins in six months. He told Reuters that a book and even television work may occupy his interests, following in the footsteps of a number of filmmakers who are crossing over to the small screen in the past several years. “I’ve been planning this for five years … I gave myself an out date and I’m right on schedule. I turn into a pumpkin in January,” Steven Soderbergh told Reuters . He also noted that he’s over making what he dubbed as “important movies,” adding that Che satisfied that desire. Following his latest, Soderbergh will finish off the thriller The Bitter Pill starring Channing Tatum, who also stars in Magic as well as Rooney Mara. And he also has the Liberace biopic Behind the Candelabra with Michael Douglas and Matt Damon shooting this summer. Candelabra may be a window, in fact, into the Oscar winning director’s future since it’s an HBO production. “After I take my self-imposed sabbatical, if I’m going to come back and do something, I think it’s more likely that it would be on television than it would be a movie,” he said.” What do you think of Soderbergh’s move to TV? Anyone who’s seen Contagion (or, let’s be honest, even just the trailer for Contagion ) knows that Steven Soderbergh is not precious about keeping his biggest stars breathing for the duration of his films. And when you think about it, that is kind of an awesome against-the-tide trend that few directors — okay, few studios — have the wherewithal to attempt. Chatting with the UK’s Independent about Contagion and Haywire , Soderbergh dropped some science on the art of manipulating the very essence of stardom in movies to great effect. “It’s always good to kill movie stars,” he told the Independent. “I think that the two most important things that have happened to that aspect of movies in the last 50 years are Hitchcock killing off Janet Leigh in a way that nobody had ever dreamed of doing – taking his heroine and killing her off after 40 minutes – and… Mike Nichols casting Dustin Hoffman in The Graduate . That changed everything.” “Now it’s back to the way it was before that single decision totally turned the world upside down in terms of what was people’s idea of a movie star. That one stroke ushered in the great actors who followed, De Niro, Pacino and Nicholson.” So how does one shake up audience expectation again in movies chock-full of A-listers? [ Spoilers ] Have them pummeled to a pulp by unknown MMA fighter-ladies! Cut their brains open in the first act! Blame it all on chickens! [ End spoilers ] All hail Soderbergh! Kill your idols! Ever since Matt Damon let slip, like ” a 14-year-old girl ,” that Steven Soderbergh wanted to retire from filmmaking, Soderbergh has been toying with his adoring public. Look people, he’s not retiring anytime soon. He’s said as much, side career in fine art or no. What more evidence do you need? How about the bazillionth new project announcement from Team Soderbergh? Good, because here it comes.

AFI Fest ‘s “secret” screening of Steven Soderbergh ‘s Haywire wasn’t so much a showcase for the AFI darling as it was a coming out party for MMA bruiser-cum-action heroine Gina Carano, whom Soderbergh glimpsed fighting one night on TV and subsequently built a star-studded spy thriller pic around. But it’s hard to say if first-time actor Carano will branch out in a film career beyond the often lo-fi action experiment. Is she a hybrid of Angelina Jolie and Steven Seagal , as Soderbergh suggested Sunday night? Or is there more of a Cynthia Rothrock quality to Carano’s steely gaze and powerhouse physicality?
