Unfortunate news: Michael Douglas has a tumor in his throat , which will force the 65-year-old actor to undergo eight weeks of radiation and chemotherapy (potentially putting him out of commission during the September 24 release of his next film, Oliver Stone’s Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps ). Doctors expect him to make a full recovery, and Douglas himself issued a statement saying, “I am very optimistic.” [ People ]

Before landing the dream role of Lisbeth Salander, Mara starred in ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’ remake and more. By Eric Ditzian Rooney Mara Photo: Getty Images Get used to hearing the name Rooney Mara. After an extensive search that reportedly focused on A-list names like Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman, “Girl With a Dragon Tattoo” director David Fincher selected Mara to play the role of dark and damaged Lisbeth Salander. While hardly a newcomer to Hollywood — she starred in this year’s “A Nightmare on Elm Street” and her sister is “Iron Man 2” star Kate — Mara remains largely unknown to the public. That’s all about to change. “Dragon Tattoo” is based on the first of Stieg Larsson’s best-selling crime novels, a trilogy that has been published in 44 countries and has sold more than 40 million copies worldwide. Anticipation for Fincher’s adaptation, slated to get an Oscar-friendly December 2011 release, is already running high, with every casting rumor — Kristen Stewart as Salander? Ellen Page? — getting wide media attention. So just who is Mara? MTV News first met her in June 2009 on the set of “Elm Street.” By this point, she had appeared in a few low-profile roles on the big and small screens. But the remake of the beloved horror flick would give the actress her widest exposure to date. And taking on the iconic role of Nancy — originated in 1984 by Heather Langenkamp — left Mara more than a little nervous. “It’s quite stressful,” she confessed. “There are big shoes to fill, and people love Nancy. There’s a lot of pressure to not let people down.” How will Mara deal with the burden of portraying Salander? As with “Elm Street” and Nancy, there is already a cinematic Salander. The Swedish version of “Dragon Tattoo,” starring Noomi Rapace, opened in the U.S. earlier this year to wide acclaim. Perhaps, though, Mara’s success on “Elm Street” has boosted her confidence: The film notched an impressive $33 million opening in April. A few months earlier, Mara had appeared in a supporting role alongside Michael Cera in “Youth in Revolt.” And by the time “Elm Street” hit theaters, she’d already lined up another high-profile flick, a prominent part in Fincher’s “The Social Network,” the story of the founding of Facebook, which arrives in October. Before then, Mara will already be in Sweden, where “Dragon Tattoo” is expected to begin shooting in September. Last year on the “Elm Street” set, Mara revealed to us how she prepares for each day in front on the camera by creating specific playlists of songs that fit the day’s shoot. “It’s sort of like reading my diary. It’s very personal,” she said, at first resisting the urge to open up about her musical tastes. But she eventually told us she listens to Red and Three Days Grace when she needs to get pumped up and, when she has a somber scene, Radiohead and every cover of Tears for Fears’ “Mad World” she can find. “I have a playlist for Nancy for just every day, and I have a specific playlist for the stuff I have to do today, which is really hard-core and I really have to kick ass today,” she explained. Check out everything we’ve got on “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . The Obama administration has asked Britain, Germany, Australia, and other allies to consider criminal charges against Julian Assange for his Afghan war leaks. Philip Shenon reports. The Obama administration is pressing Britain, Germany, Australia, and other allied Western governments to consider opening criminal investigations of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange and to severely limit his nomadic travels across international borders, American officials say. Officials tell The Daily Beast that the U.S. effort reflects a growing belief that WikiLeaks and organizations like it threaten grave damage to American national security, as well as a growing suspicion in Washington that Assange has damaged his own standing with foreign governments and organizations that might otherwise be sympathetic to his anti-censorship cause. American officials confirmed last month that the Justice Department was weighing a range of criminal charges against Assange and others as a result of the massive leaking of classified U.S. military reports from the war in Afghanistan, including potential violations of the Espionage Act by Bradley Manning, the Army intelligence analyst in Iraq accused of providing the documents to WikiLeaks. Now, the officials say, they want other foreign governments to consider the same sorts of criminal charges. “It’s not just our troops that are put in jeopardy by this leaking,” said an American diplomatic official who is involved in responding to the aftermath of the release of more than 70,000 Afghanistan war logs—and WikiLeaks’ threat to reveal 15,000 more of the classified reports. “It’s U.K. troops, it’s German troops, it’s Australian troops—all of the NATO troops and foreign forces working together in Afghanistan,” he said. Their governments, he said, should follow the lead of the Justice Department and “review whether the actions of WikiLeaks could constitute crimes under their own national-security laws.” Last month, a prominent pro-military group in Australia suggested that Assange may have violated Australian law through the release of the Afghan war logs, given the threat the leak may have posed to the lives of Australian troops serving in the NATO-led force. The Obama administration was heartened by the call this week by Amnesty International and four other human-rights groups for WikiLeaks to be far more careful in editing classified material from the war in Afghanistan to be sure that its public release does not endanger innocent Afghans who may be identified in the documents. “It’s amazing how Assange has overplayed his hand,” a Defense Department official marveled. “Now, he’s alienating the sort of people who you’d normally think would be his biggest supporters.” The initial document dump by WikiLeaks last month is reported to have disclosed the names of hundreds of Afghan civilians who have cooperated with NATO forces; the Taliban has threatened to hunt down the civilians named in the documents, a threat that human-rights organizations say WikiLeaks should take seriously. “It’s amazing how Assange has overplayed his hand,” a Defense Department official marveled. “Now, he’s alienating the sort of people who you’d normally think would be his biggest supporters.” The joint letter by the five groups, first revealed by The Wall Street Journal, was met by a tart response from Assange, who communicates with the outside world largely through the social-networking Internet tool Twitter. He appeared to suggest that news organizations and human-rights groups, notably Amnesty International, should help him underwrite his cost of the editing and release of more of the Afghan war documents—but that they were instead refusing to provide assistance. “Pentagon wants to bankrupt us by refusing to assist review,” he tweeted on Monday, referring to the effort by WikiLeaks to convince the Defense Department to join in reviewing the additional 15,000 documents to remove the names of Afghan civilians and others who might be placed in danger by its release. “Media won’t take responsibility. Amnesty won’t. What to do?” In a separate posting on Twitter, Assange estimated the cost of the “harm minimization review”—a reference, apparently, to the effort to edit the 15,000 documents to remove informants’ names—at $700,000. It was not clear how he arrived at that figure. The Australian-born Assange travels constantly and is said to have no real home, living instead in the homes of friends and supporters around the world. He was reported as recently as last week to be in the U.K., although he has spent significant time this year in Australia, Iceland, and the U.S. He has said he is postponing future travel to the U.S. because of fear that he faces legal sanctions here. Through diplomatic and military channels, the Obama administration is hoping to convince Britain, Germany, and Australia, among other allied governments that Assange should not be welcome on their shores, either, given the danger that his group poses to their troops stationed in Afghanistan, American officials say. They say severe limitations on Assange’s travels might serve as a useful warning to his followers that their own freedom is now at risk. A prominent American volunteer for WikiLeaks reported last month that he was subjected to hours of questioning and had his laptop and cellphones seized by American border agents on returning to the U.S. from Europe late last month. An American military official tells The Daily Beast that Washington may also want to closely review its relations with Iceland in the wake of the release of the Afghan war logs. Assange and his followers have been successful in pressing the government of Iceland, in the wake of the collapse of the country’s banking system, to reinvent itself as a haven for free speech, creating a potential home for WikiLeaks and other organizations that may violate the laws of the U.S. and other nations through the release of classified documents. added by: toyotabedzrock

DMX is the man. When barely a day passes in between your run-ins with the cops, that’s when you know you are hard core. Lindsay Lohan and her driving woes have nothing on him. Just hours after X was released from jail yesterday, the rapper was pulled over by the police driving down Sunset Blvd in a rented Mercedes and busted again! X’s manager says he recording studio around 11:20 p.m. when he was stopped for a minor traffic violation. Officers then learned he didn’t have a valid license. A rare kind of DMX photo – it wasn’t taken in a police station! DMX was issued a citation and will be due to appear in court sometime in the near future. Cops even allowed a passenger in the car to drive the rapper home. That’s nice. Give the man a break. He’s been in solitary confinement enough times this year already … might as well give him a night or two in his own bed. Yesterday’s release from jail came after the man served just 18 days of a 90-day sentence stemming from a reckless driving conviction way back in 2002. Lohan was let out after 14 for the same thing. Just saying.

A woman claiming to be David Hasselhoff’s girlfriend says she plans to sue the star for domestic abuse, even though he claims they’ve never even met. These things happen when you are an international sex symbol and revered for your role in the epic, long-running television drama known as Baywatch. Shelly Thompson, who also goes by Shane Starlet, is alleging she was physically hassled by the Hoff and has engaged a high-profile Hollywood lawyer. If Thompson is to be believed (a big if) her story is no joke. She says she began living with Hasselhoff in 2007 until their relationship came to an end this July, when he threw her out of his car onto the street. “My mother and I were on our way down to San Diego with David for his Comic Con appearance,” Thompson recalled . “He was drunk, we got into an argument and he pulled over on the side of the road and told us to, ‘Get the f*%k out!’” Who does he think he is, Mel Gibson ? No photo evidence of Thompson and Hasselhoff together is know to exist, despite her claims that she and Hasselhoff – who is famously battling alcohol and other problems – dated for nearly three years. Quite fishy, no? Another hole? Thompson claims the incident occurred on July 24. There are photos of Hasselhoff at a Comic Con event in San Diego with his daughter on July 22 – two days before Thompson says she went to the event with him. Hasselhoff’s legal team says this reeks of a shakedown, claiming “he has never met” Shelly Thompson, “doesn’t know anyone by that name” and the whole story “is absolutely not true.” The accuser says it is true, and there are witnesses. We’ll see.

I have always said that all girls are fucking strippers, some just aren’t as confident as others to do the shit in public, while others have been brainwashed to think that stripping is bad, so that when they do it, they feel all dirty and wrong, like Jesus is watching over them judging. I have also always said that all girls are whores and that some just work for money, while other’s work for status and lifestyle, but the core of it is all the fucking self-involved, out for personal gain, using your pussy to get ahead same. I am not a scientist, but assume it’s gotta do with evolution and instincts that we’ve tried to repress all these years of “ciilization”…. That said, every once in a while, enough drugs makes one of these bitches who is on the fence tap into her instinct and you get public stripping in a place where strippers don’t work. I’ve seen it at least 5 times at bars. I’ve seen it on the street. I’ve even seen it at the stripclub when four 18 year olds on vacation thought it’d be a good idea to ask the DJ to try stripping…it is cuz girls of all shapes and all sizes are attention seeking whores…and if titties are involved, even fat lesbian titties with nasty pussy, I’m ok with it….if anything, it’s the one thing I love in the world…which is saying a lot for someone incapable of emotions…

Citing a German news report, Techeye.net reports that Google has purchased small UAV “microdrone” aircraft manufactured by Germany's microdrone GmbH, perhaps for use to augment the company's Street View mapping data. Techeye says: The UAVs being flogged are mini helicopters with cameras attached that can be flown about all over the place. They're quiet and resemble sci-fi UFOs for the vertically challenged alien. They can fly up to 80km per hour, so Microdrone CEO Sven Juerss suggests they'll be brilliant for mapping entire neighbourhoods really quickly and relatively cheaply. Even before Google started data mining on open web networks its Street View operations were controversial, with Google Maps picking up on people who didn't exactly want their faces plastered all over the internet. With the kind of high-angle aerial shots this sort of kit can achieve, it boggles the mind as to the sort of images that may be accidentally captured. Our take: Skepticism is warranted, and outrage is probably premature. Our understanding is that FAA certification procedures for civilian UAVs operating in domestic airspace are not yet in place, so it is not clear that the regular operation of such UAVs would be legal — never mind prudent from a privacy or public-relations point of view. http://telstarlogistics.typepad.com/telstarlogistics/2010/08/does-google-plan-to… added by: slagface
