Only CBS Reports on Salary Gap Between Public and Private Employees

While ABC and NBC ignored a Monday USA Today report that found a significant gap in compensation between public and private sector employees, on Tuesday’s CBS Evening News, correspondent Sharyl Attkisson provided a full story: “While many Americans have suffered pay cuts or job losses, one group is bucking the trend – federal workers.” Attkisson described how the “analysis finds that federal employees have gotten bigger pay and benefit increases than private employees for nine years straight.” She cited numbers from the report: “Federal salaries have grown 33% faster than inflation. Their pay and benefits average $123,000, up 37% since 2000. Private workers average $61,000, up just 8.8% over the same time.” In addition, Attkisson included a sound bite from Cato Institute budget analyst Tad Dehaven: “So you have Wall Street, you have big oil, and now you have federal civilians.” She went to note: “And the bonuses are flowing. CBS News has learned your tax dollars funded $95.8 million in airport security TSA bonuses last year. A $35,000 bonus to the head of the agency.” In concluding her report, Attkisson gave the public sector perspective: “Defenders of federal salaries say they reflect the higher skills and education often required for their jobs and many are paid more because they’ve stuck with their jobs so long.” She added: “President Obama has ordered a freeze on bonuses for 3,000 political appointees and is asking for the smallest pay hike in more than a decade for 2 million other federal workers, 1.4%.” Given that the poor economy, government spending, and the deficit are key issues in the midterm elections, it’s interesting that neither ABC or NBC deemed a story about overpaid government workers to be worthy of coverage. Here is a full transcript of Attkisson’s August 10 report: 6:39PM ET KATIE COURIC: For those fortunate enough to have a job in this tough economy, there’s a growing gap in salary between government employees and those who work in the private sector. More on that now from Sharyl Attkisson. SHARYL ATTKISSON: While many Americans have suffered pay cuts or job losses, one group is bucking the trend – federal workers. A USA Today analysis finds that federal employees have gotten bigger pay and benefit increases than private employees for nine years straight. UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: It made me think, man, I should be a federal employee. ATTKISSON: Federal salaries have grown 33% faster than inflation. Their pay and benefits average $123,000, up 37% since 2000. Private workers average $61,000, up just 8.8% over the same time. TAD DEHAVEN [BUDGET ANALYST, CATO INSTITUTE]: So you have Wall Street, you have big oil, and now you have federal civilians. ATTKISSON: And the bonuses are flowing. CBS News has learned your tax dollars funded $95.8 million in airport security TSA bonuses last year. A $35,000 bonus to the head of the agency. UNIDENTIFIED MALE: They’re really overpaid. UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Right now everything should be – should be a freeze across the board until we really get the economy back up and running. ATTKISSON: Federal employees see things differently. UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I definitely don’t think I’m being paid too much. UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I think I’m paid a fair wage, definitely. ATTKISSON: Defenders of federal salaries say they reflect the higher skills and education often required for their jobs and many are paid more because they’ve stuck with their jobs so long. UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I’ve been working for the government 21 years. ATTKISSON: President Obama has ordered a freeze on bonuses for 3,000 political appointees and is asking for the smallest pay hike in more than a decade for 2 million other federal workers, 1.4%. Katie? COURIC: Sharyl Attkisson. Sharyl, thank you very much.

George Stephanopoulos Touts Obama’s Liberal Achievements: ‘What More Could the President Have Done?’

Good Morning America’s George Stephanopoulos on Thursday interviewed liberal Congressman Dennis Kucinich and defended Barack Obama’s left-wing achievements. Stephanopoulos touted, ” Congressman, what more could the President have done? You’ve got this almost $800 million stimulus bill. You’ve got a financial reform package .” [MP3 audio here .] The GMA host was trying to make peace between Obama and those who had been derided by White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs as the “professional left.” The former Democratic operative turned journalist trumpeted, “[Obama] did something that…no Democratic president in 50 years has been able to do, lay the groundwork for universal, national health care. That is quite a legislative record, isn’t it?” This isn’t the first time co-host has attempted to mediate a dispute between liberals. On March 13, 2010 , Stephanopoulos lobbied wavering Democrat Bart Stupak to support the health care bill. Using similar language, he cajoled, “What more do you need?” Stephanopoulos also pressed, “Did he say anything to change your mind that could move you from no to yes?” A transcript of the August 12 segment, which aired at 7:08am EDT, follows: GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: For more on this, let’s go down to Washington. Congressman Dennis Kucinich called out there by Robert Gibbs, joins us this morning. He, of course, ran for president the last two around, I believe. So, Congressman, how did you take Mr. Gibbs’ comments? An insult? REP. DENNIS KUCINICH: No. I think that Mr. Gibbs and the White House needs to realize that liberals support the President, but there’s still- the criticism is really a measure of the hopes that have not been realized. And I don’t think they ought to take it in the manner in which Gibbs, and apparently, the rest of the White House does take the criticism. STEPHANOPOULOS: Congressman, what more could the President have done? You’ve got this almost $800 million stimulus bill. You’ve got a financial reform package. He did something that no president in- no Democratic president in 50 years has been able to do, lay the groundwork for universal, national health care. That is quite a legislative record, isn’t it? KUCINICH: Well, you can’t take away from the president his accomplishments, and I certainly don’t. But, there is this factor at the beginning of yours news show, you demonstrated, the economy is in a deep trough. We’re looking at a double dip recession. We have 9.5 percent of Americans out of work, over 15 million American has out of work. You have the trade deficit which is the largest it’s been in the last two years. We have to do something about the joblessness. It’s a key issue. And until the administration effectively addresses that, then those of us who call ourselves liberals are going to continue to insist, look, we should be talking about a full employment economy. We should be talking about getting America back to work. We shouldn’t be capitulating to the Fed or Wall Street with this false notion that a certain amount of unemployment is necessary for the proper functioning of the economy. We have to get America back to work. That is the key and central issue to all of this. And, in addition, if I might add, don’t forget about getting out of Afghanistan and Iraq, because that also inevitably has a drag on the economy. STEPHANOPOULOS: I know those are all big- The President has been pushing, though, very hard for more job creations programs. But the votes just aren’t there in the House and Senate, are they? KUCINICH: Well, you know what, though? The kind of tremendous hope that America felt in January of 2009 with the election of Barack Obama, an election which I supported after the- they’re still out there. People still want to believe that government has this transformational power. And it does. But we need the leadership that can make it happen. Franklin Roosevelt recognized in 1933 that America needed not just a New Deal, but we will to put America back to work. Rebuild the economy, rebuild America. We still have the capacity to do that now. And that’s what I say, the criticism is about hopes that have not been realized and the intention to make sure they get realized while we have a President we do want to support. STEPHANOPOULOS: Democratic governor Ed Rendell said the other day at that President is vulnerable to the primary challenge from the left. Are you considering on running again? KUCINICH: No. And I think it’s, you know, what we have to do is focus on coming together for the purpose of getting out of Iraq and Afghanistan. Today, the news is they want to slow down the movement out of Afghanistan. We have to focus on creating jobs. And, you know, it’s important who’s president, yes. But it’s also important that we as Democrats come together on mainstream economic ideas and try to paint as out of the mainstream, people who want a full-employment economy. People who want peace, people who want to get out of Iraq and Afghanistan. That’s the mistake that Mr. Gibbs made. He’s missing exactly what’s happening out there across America.

Olbermann Mocks Bozell, NewsBusters as ‘Worst Person in the World’

MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann named MRC president Brent Bozell Wednesday’s “Worst Person in the World” for my NewsBusters post on Jon Stewart’s sneering attack on  conservatives as supposedly being opponents of religious freedom over the Ground Zero Mosque controversy. (Audio here .) Predictably, in choosing this dishonor, Olbermann was playing rip-and-read from certain Hillary Clinton-founded Fox-and-Rush watchdogs, as he routinely acts as the TV Xerox of the Bush-Hating Left-Wing Blogosphere. Olbermann also re-tweeted them yesterday . None of these analysts on the left evaluated their own tendency to see grave threats to freedom of religion and church-state separation from Christian evangelists, but nothing at all threatening to their swaggering secular coolness from Islamic advocates of “dialogue.” (See, for example, one take on the Ground Zero Imam Feisal Abdul-Rauf’s views on America’s “Shariah compliance.” Hello, Barry Lynn?) Here’s the transcript:   OLBERMANN: But our winner, Brent Bozell of the hilarious Media Research Center and NewsBusters — not happy that John Stewart criticized the anti-American frenzy by conservatives to stop the building of houses of worship for Muslims. “Stewart,” writes Tim Graham on NewsBusters, quote, “mocked conservatives for having no respect for freedom of religion. This from Comedy Central, the network that mocks Jesus and Christians relentlessly but censors whenever the radical Muslims threaten them? Yes, Stewart was arguing for the greatness of Islam that it should be accepted with great tolerance as a global religion.” Except, of course, when Comedy Central folded in front of Muslim protests over an episode of South Park , Stewart mocked Comedy Central. You know how I know that? Graham’s own Media Research Center and NewsBusters applauded Stewart for doing it. One Lachlan Markay wrote, “Jon Stewart noted the blatant censorship his employer Comedy Central exercised against its popular show South Park by banning it from showing and even uttering the word ‘Mohammed’ in this week’s episode after a threat came forward from an Islamic group. His extensive recap of all the religions the show has made fun of over the years was clearly a critique of Comedy Central’s decision.” Clearly, people at NewsBusters are not relying on their own Web site for information. Then again, with their kind of track record, who would? Brent Bozell of the somewhat self-destructive NewsBusters and Media Research Council [sic], today’s “Worst Person” – hey, beard – “in the World”! I wrote that Stewart and his network shouldn’t “cower” before Muslim critics as they trash Christians. But it’s clear that Lachlan reported that Stewart mocked radical Islam (sort of) over the Comedy Central censorship in April. He lightly made fun of the bosses, and then lightly mocked the Muslim death-threateners with Jewish-deli-and-Frisbee jokes: They “try to intimidate the creators of South Park all while enjoying our lovely theater district, our many diverse restaurants including really the best Jewish delis you’ll find and our new high line park. It’s a park made out of an elevated train line. It’s a super-thin park in the sky. Let’s play Frisbee.” Radical Muslims make death threats; Stewart makes Frisbee jokes and mocks gospel choirs with his “F-You” song. That hardly compares in tone and temper to another April bit, Stewart trashing the 21st-century Catholic Church for heinous massacres in the 13th  as well as everything from Galileo to the Spanish Inquisition: SAMANTHA BEE: The Cathars, the gnostic sect in 13th century France. STEWART: I still got nothing there. BEE: Tens of thousands of them were massacred under the direct authority of Pope Innocent III, persecuted out of existence by the Catholic Church. STEWART: Oh, I see. BEE: Well, that’s what you’re doing now. STEWART: Sam, see, if any other organization had done anything close to what the church is being accused of, they’d be done! The church is barely showing any contrition. Stewart also made fun of Christian “Islamophobes” and Fox News in early July when the bizarre story of NASA administrator Charles Bolden’s Islamic outreach broke. Clearly, the cable news stars on the Left plays the enemy-of-my-enemy-is-my-friend game. Just like they were anti-anti-Communist, now they’re anti-anti-Islamist.

Schultz Mocks Rove Radio Work, But Can’t Pronounce ‘Cousteau’

From the Department Of People In Glass Houses . . . Early in his MSNBC show this evening, Ed Schultz mocked Karl Rove’s performance in filling in for Rush Limbaugh today.  In particular, Schultz slammed Rove for his brief problem in providing the show’s call-in number.   But later in the show, Ed himself ran head-first into a rhetorical roadblock, stumbling badly when it came to pronouncing the most famous name in the world of ocean studies: Cousteau. ED SCHULTZ: And in Psycho Talk tonight, Karl Rove filled in for the Drugster [Schultz’s nasty nickname for Rush] on his radio show today, and I think old Turd Blossom should probably stick to his day job across the street over at Fox . . . Rove’s debut as a radio host was a total disaster. Right off the bat he had a hell of a time finding the call-in number, even though it was right on the screen in front of him. But later, it was Ed’s turn to pronounce a name so famous it’s the first one that comes up in Google search when you type in Jacques.  Here was Ed’s heroic struggle as he sought to introduce Phillipe, grandson of the famous oceanographer. SCHULTZ:  Coming up . . . world-renowned environmental expert Philippe Castoo, Cas–, Coh-stow will join us, coming up here in just a moment.  Give Phillipe credit for his French sang froid in–just–managing to suppress a smirk at poor Ed’s problems. Note: Ed also let some professional jealousy creep into his roasting of Rove/Limbaugh. Schultz spoke sarcastically [longingly?] of “that high-impact, totally-entertaining, right-wing radio on five million stations across America that we just can’t live without.”

Hardball Panelist Bemoans: Townhallers Only Getting News From Limbaugh, Drudge and Fox News

NBC’s Chuck Todd, substitute hosting for Chris Matthews on Monday’s Hardball, invited on Vanity Fair’s Todd Purdum and the Politico’s Jonathan Martin to navel gaze about what ailed the political structure as Todd questioned “Is Washington broke and beyond repair?” Pivoting off a Purdum article, that in part, blamed lobbyists, Martin offered his own explanation as he brought up the typical mainstream media boogeymen of the Drudge Report, Rush Limbaugh and Fox News. After Todd noted that it’s not just the “lobbying community” causing distress in D.C., that the “media is playing a role here” and “it’s not clear which came first, the polarized Washington or the polarized way that people get information” Martin offered his account of how townhallers in Florida were “listening to Rush Limbaugh,” “reading Drudge” and “watching Fox News.” JONATHAN MARTIN, POLITICO: But it’s also, it’s also the break down in not just Washington media but in regional newspapers. Last August, a year ago, I was down in Florida, the panhandle, going to Allen Boyd town hall meetings. The folks at those town hall meetings – Chuck, they, they were not reading the Pensacola News Journal, they were not reading the Tallahassee Democrat, they were listening to Rush Limbaugh, they were reading Drudge, and they were watching- CHUCK TODD: Local news has gone national. MARTIN: -and they were watching Fox News. And that’s where they got their information entirely! The following is the full exchange as it was aired on the August 9 edition of Hardball: CHUCK TODD: Well, we are back. Is Washington broke and beyond repair? Vanity Fair’s national editor Todd Purdum has a great big piece. One of those big think pieces in the latest issue of the magazine, which of course has Lady Gaga on the cover, because you have to sell the magazine. But it’s called “Washington, We Have A Problem.” We’re also joined by a Washingtonian from birth, Politico’s senior political reporter Jonathan Martin. And look you’ve gotten, Todd, you’ve gotten a lot of attention for this piece. This idea that it’s broken. I think Rahm Emanuel refers to Washington, in cementing his own four letter legacy as “F” Nutsville. But one part of your piece has not gotten a lot of attention and it was striking to me and that was the fact that the media is not the Fourth Estate it’s the industry of lobbying. Let me, this figure you used, you said in 2009 expenditures for lobbying – $3.5 billion, with a “b” dollars or $1.3 million for each hour that Congress was in session according to the Center for Responsive Politics. That’s, that to me, is the eye opener of this piece, almost more than anything now. TODD PURDUM, VANITY FAIR: It’s pretty incredible. And a single lobbying entity, the Chamber of Commerce, spent $144 million last year, which is more than the combined payroll of all 535 members of Congress. So I mean the, the stakes are so wildly disproportionate in terms what have resources can be brought to bear. And the typical congressman or senator, you know, doesn’t need that much. John Breaux, senator from Louisiana once famously said, “My vote can’t be bought, it can occasionally be rented.” TODD: You know Jonathan I was looking at this piece and I went into it with a little bit – cynical. You know is Washington broken? You know what? We’re all gonna thumb suck. You see a number like that though and you say, “Okay think maybe things have changed.” This lobbying community, like I said, you’ve grown up around here. JONATHAN MARTIN, POLITICO: Right. TODD: K Street is no longer just a street. It’s a community. MARTIN: Well it’s the entire, it’s the entire culture now of Washington. And also, if you go to the Hill, those bills are frequent, this is not a cliche, those bills are actually written by lobbyists. I mean the actual language itself, because the lobbyists are the only ones that actually are the experts on the issues. They’re the ones feeding the committee staff, the actual language of the bills. That’s a fact. But I was struck, Chuck, in this piece and also the New York piece by George Packer about the U.S. Senate. PURDUM: Wonderful piece. MARTIN: Two things. Increasingly, the, the real campaigns are played out within the parties themselves, not against each other, R’s versus D’s. But these folks are so scared of primaries nowadays that you’ve got now Republicans, for example talking about overturning the 14th Amendment. Why are they doing that? Does Mitch McConnell suddenly care about this issue? I would doubt it seriously. They are scared of a radicalized GOP base that, that right now is demanding action on immigration and they’re talking about addressing this issue because they’re scared of their own base and being primaried. That’s what drives the folks on the R side and the D side now increasingly. It’s primaries. TODD: Now you, rightly, I think put a focus, Todd, on this, the, the lobbying community as this sort of hidden Fourth Estate that no one talks about. You hear it sort of used as a punching bag. But the media is playing a role here, a little bit, too. And that is the fact that it’s not clear which came first, the polarized Washington or the polarized way that people get information about Washington. And then we’ve shined a spotlight on it, but with our own lens and we focus it in its special way. PURDUM: Well first of all, I mean the media from the French Revolution on, the media thrives on conflict. And that’s why we say “man bites dog,” and not “dog bites man.” So that’s, that’s a given. But it’s the intensity- TODD: Wait a minute, breaking news. Another plane has landed safely at National Airport. That is correct. Another – right, we never break in for that. Yeah. MARTIN: One hundred today now… PURDUM: You scared me for one second. I thought that’s going on here? TODD: No, no but that’s my point. We don’t break in for that. PURDUM: And we don’t say Washingtonians got up and had their coffee and went to school and… TODD: Right. PURDUM: But, but what has happened to the frequency, the velocity of it, has so increased, that even 15 years ago when I covered the White House for the New York Times, we like to say we had a 24/7 media, we really did not. We had CNN, which every 22 minutes kind of had the world headlines. But it wasn’t that some blogger sitting in a house some place, could cause a story that would make the White House reacted at midnight. That just didn’t exist. MARTIN: But it’s also, it’s also the break down in not just Washington media but in regional newspapers. Last August, a year ago, I was down in Florida, the panhandle, going to Allen Boyd town hall meetings. The folks at those town hall meetings – Chuck, they, they were not reading the Pensacola News Journal, they were not reading the Tallahassee Democrat, they were listening to Rush Limbaugh, they were reading Drudge, and they were watching- TODD: Local news has gone national. MARTIN: -and they were watching Fox News. And that’s where they got their information entirely!

PBS Reporter Waters Down Liberal Bias of Ninth Circuit Court

Reporting a U.S. District Court judge overturning California’s Proposition 8, PBS correspondent Spencer Michaels noted that if the case is appealed to a higher court, the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals would handle it. Michaels watered down the court’s infamous history of liberal rulings, saying that though it may be liberal, it is not more so than any other U.S. Circuit Court. The Ninth Circuit has “kind of a liberal bias – at least that’s the charge,” Michaels quickly corrected himself. “In actual fact, they probably aren’t any more liberal than any other court,” he insisted of the circuit with the dubious distinction of being the most-overturned of any by the Supreme Court. The Ninth Circuit has a long history of being stacked with liberal judges since the days of President Carter, and infamously struck down “under God” from the Pledge of Allegiance in 2002. The Court has arguably inched to the right with the addition of moderate and conservative judges, but is still widely regarded as the most liberal of the circuit courts. James Taranto, member of the editorial board of the Wall Street Journal, described the court as “notoriously liberal,” in his piece about the reversal of Proposition 8. Ashby Jones, writing for the WSJ’s law blog, said that the court has a reputation for being “packed with liberal judges.” The sentiment isn’t confined to conservative-friendly publications. The Los Angeles Times reported last year that 15 of the court’s 16 cases reviewed by the U.S. Supreme Court were reversed. “Judicial analysts attribute the high reversal rate at least partly to the 9th Circuit’s reputation as a liberal-dominated bench, even though more recent conservative appointments have diluted that influence,” the paper reported. Indeed, the New York Times reported this past spring that “outside experts who have examined the circuit for quantitative evidence of its leanings say that over all, it is indeed the most liberal circuit – but not by all that much.” A transcript of the segment, which aired on August 4 at 7:10 p.m., is as follows: JUDY WOODRUFF, PBS anchor: And as you suggest, the proponents of Proposition 8 had already served notice that they plan to appeal. What is their recourse here? SPENCER MICHAELS, PBS correspondent: Well, they’re going to go to the Ninth Circuit, which is California and the rest of the West’s appellate court in the federal system. That court has a kind of a liberal bias, at least that’s the charge. In actual fact, they probably aren’t any more liberal than any other court. They’re going to take up this case, and from there, what one of the lawyers I talked to today said, is that what happens in the Ninth Circuit is going to be very, very important, that they will set precedent. And if they set a precedent that makes the Ninth Circuit different than the rest of the country, then the Supreme Court will want to step in and settle this issue. You can’t have gay marriage approved in the Ninth Circuit and not in the rest of the country. So the Supreme Court will want to get involved in that. So that’s probably what will happen. It probably will go to the Supreme Court eventually. The people who are in favor of gay marriage aren’t really happy to go to the Supreme Court at this point. They know the make-up of that court, and they probably figure that they don’t have a big chance of winning. WOODRUFF: And Spencer, you were saying in your report a few minutes ago that it’s not clear the effect this is going to have on the other 49 states right now. What is your understanding of that? MICHAELS: Well as I said, right now this court is just a district court, a trial court – it doesn’t present a precedent. If it goes to the Ninth Circuit, then there is a precedent involved, and the Ninth Circuit rules in most of the states west of the Rockies. But the rest of the country is not bound by the Ninth Circuit. So the U.S. Supreme Court would have to make a decision for the rest of the country.

The Violent World of White Supremacist Gangs

;cbsCarousel (CBS) According to the Justice Department, 27,000 gangs with 788,000 members operate in this country. Chief investigative correspondent Armen Keteyian gives us a look at a heavily armed, and very dangerous white supremacist gang. Posing as a gun-runner an undercover ATF agent opened a door into the rarely-seen world of white supremacists. They're ultra-violent, sophisticated, and less interested in a pure white race, than the color of money. “Their criminal activity was first, robberies, burglaries, drug sales, firearms, arms trafficking, and then I think their white rhetoric and passing along their message for recruiting was second,” the undercover agent said. During the course of a 2 1/2-year undercover operation, the ATF agent met with white supremacist gang members at a hangout in Omaha, and other locations around town, setting up deals for drugs, guns and ammo. The leader of the eight-member group, identified by the signature red suspenders, is Jason “Skin” Hawthorne – a three-time felon. Virtually his entire crew had done time in federal prison – the breeding ground, experts say, for white supremacists. “What has happened in the last 10 or 15 years is that we have seen these gangs increasingly spilling out of the prisons and onto the street,” said Mark Potok, Director of the Southern Poverty Law Center. Particularly in California and Texas, and now spreading across Midwestern states, nearly 5,000 white supremacists are in prison today. Experts estimate that number could be 50,000 nationwide – distinguished by an unceasing appetite for violence. The undercover ATF agent was concerned about their “constant talk of violent activity,” and “their lack of respect for human life as a whole.” He added, “for them, I think it was a way of life.” ATF agents working what was known as “Operation Red Swastika” called this gang the “worst of the worst.” They cited the use of stun guns – stronger than those used by federal agents, radio scanners, and virtual carbon-copies of SWAT team outfits. Skin and his crew were wearing the SWAT outfits the night they showed up at the undercover agent's apartment, ready to rob what they thought was a drug dealer but was actually an ATF sting. The undercover agent said they were “ready to go,” with “black hats, black coats, pants, black boots, surveillance equipment, and GPS tracker.” Before they did that, some of the crew decided to get amped-up for the action – by smoking meth. “They sat at my table, loaded their guns, and smoked methamphetamines,” the undercover agent said. “It definitely took things to a different level.” So did a surprising phone call. AFT supervisor Mickey Leadingham informed his agent his wire was no longer working. “My words were, hey, you're flying solo. And he knew what that meant,” Leadingham said. A small army of law enforcement officers waited in a nearby parking lot and arrested all eight men without incident. “It was a relief. I was glad it was over,” the undercover agent said. “At least I thought it was over.” added by: TimALoftis
