Getty Image Fair or foul? Black Parents Use Civil War-era Law To Sue Ain’t Isht Mississippi School Districts The Washington Post reports, The Southern Poverty Law Center is using a 147-year-old legal argument in an attempt to address what it describes as “gross inequities” between majority-white and majority-black public schools in Mississippi. In a lawsuit filed on tuesday, they allege that poor academic outcomes for black students in Mississippi are a direct result of the state’s failure to live up to the terms of its ‘readmission to the Union’ following the Civil War. As part of the terms of readmission, Mississippi was required to create a “uniform system of free public schools” for all citizens, both black and white. However, the state constitution changed several times until in 1890 it allowed only for “separate but equal” systems. Will Bardwell, a lawyer at the Southern Poverty Law Center says Mississippi has withheld their promise of uniform schools, according to the law. “Today, Mississippi schools are anything but uniform. If you’re a kid in Mississippi, your chances of getting a good education depend largely on whether your school is mostly white or mostly black. That is not a uniform system.” Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant clapped back at the complaint, calling it “another attempt by the Southern Poverty Law Center to fundraise on the backs of Mississippi taxpayers.” According to the report, Mississippi is among the nation’s lowest-performing states on many academic measures. Just, terrible.

After eight days of deadly fighting and air raids, both Hamas and Israel have come to an agreement to back off. A cease-fire was announced earlier today by Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and Foreign Minister Mohamed Amr of Egypt and was welcomed by all leaders involved. According to The New York Times , the hold on fighting isn’t a certainty: Even in the minutes leading up to the effective start time, the antagonists were firing at each other, and the Israeli authorities reported at least five Palestinian rockets were lobbed into southern Israel shortly after the cease-fire had begun. But no damage or injuries were reported and the rocket fire seemed to end in the second hour. In Gaza, thousands of residents came outside to celebrate. “This is a critical moment for the region,” Mrs. Clinton, who rushed to the Middle East late Tuesday in an intensified effort to halt the hostilities, told reporters in Cairo. She thanked Egypt’s president, Mohamed Morsi, who played a pivotal role in the negotiations, for “assuming the leadership that has long made this country a cornerstone of regional stability and peace.” Mrs. Clinton also pledged to work “with our partners across the region to consolidate this progress, improve conditions for the people of Gaza, provide security for the people of Israel.” Mr. Amr said Egypt’s role in reaching the agreement reflected its “historical commitment to the Palestinian cause” and Egypt’s efforts to “bring together the gap between the Palestinian factions.” The top leader of Hamas, Khaled Meshal, also had strong words of praise for the Egyptian leader, a former official in the Muslim Brotherhood, in which Hamas has roots. At a news conference in Cairo, Mr. Meshal thanked Egypt for its role and said Israel had “failed in all its objectives.” The negotiators reached an agreement after days of nearly nonstop Israeli aerial assaults on Gaza, the Mediterranean enclave run by Hamas, and the firing of hundreds of rockets into Israel from an arsenal Hamas had been amassing since the three-week Israeli invasion four years ago. Under the terms distributed after the cease-fire was announced, Israel agreed to stop all land, sea and air hostilities in Gaza, including the “targeting of individuals” — a reference to militants of Hamas and its affiliates who have been killed. The cease-fire also called on the Palestinian factions in Gaza to stop all hostilities against Israel, including rocket attacks and attacks along the border. But the terms also state that underlying grievances of Gazans, most notably the border restrictions Israel has imposed that impede the movement of people and goods through Gaza, will be addressed starting 24 hours after the cease-fire is in effect. Precisely how they will be addressed was left unclear. Also left unclear was how the agreement would be enforced, but the terms stated that “each party shall commit itself not to perform any acts that would breach this understanding.” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel, who had been threatening to start another ground invasion if the Gaza rockets did not stop, said in a statement that he was satisfied, for the moment, with the outcome. But he left open the possibility of more military action. This is centuries of fighting that we hope leaders can find some resolution to soon. Images via AP

By Jocelyn Vena Nicole Richie Photo: Jim Spellman/ WireImage Nicole Richie has officially completed her probation in connection with a 2006 DUI case, TMZ reports . Richie was put on probation that year in connection with DUI charges she received after being pulled over while driving the wrong way on a Los Angeles freeway. Richie’s lawyer, Shawn Chapman Holley, went to court Wednesday morning (December 29) to present the judge with proof that her client had completed the terms of her probation. The verification included a report from the alcohol-education program that the reality-TV star had been attending for the last 18 months. Richie was supposed to end her probation in February 2011, but the judge agreed to terminate it early after ruling that all the terms were been met sufficiently. Earlier this month, Richie and her longtime beau, Good Charlotte rocker Joel Madden , finally tied the knot after dating for four years and having two kids together. The wedding took place in California at the home of Nicole’s dad, Lionel Richie. An array of stars helped the celebrate the nuptials, including No Doubt frontwoman Gwen Stefani, celebrity DJ Samantha Ronson and Madden’s twin and Good Charlotte bandmate, Benji. Reverend Run presided over the ceremony. The couple have a 1-year-old son, Sparrow, and an almost-3-year-old daughter, Harlow. The pair made headlines last February when they announced their engagement. Richie broke the news during an appearance on “The Late Show With David Letterman,” while Madden took to Twitter to let the world know. In October 2009, Richie opened up about being a parent. “I couldn’t be happier,” Richie explained to People . “The only thing you want is for your kids to be healthy and happy, and they are. I hate this useless fucking cunt. She tried to sue me when I posted pics of her getting eaten out by a Greek Billionaire. She has sued people I know because she’s one of those attention seeking twats who likes attention on her terms. Not that she deserves any attention, she was in Playboy a decade ago, big fucking deal, anyone can get fake tits. Her body is old, tired and boring to watch hang onto its sex appeal, her fake tits are as retarded as my neighbor’s kid, and that fucker is wheel chair bound and always in a bib. She is not worth jerking off to, she is just a low level hooker with the right clientele, but when she fingers herself in a bikini, I have no choice but to post the shit, cuz that’s just the kind of blogger I am, one who puts his personal opinon aside to report the fucking bikini pics in an objective way.
