The Verge: Mary Elizabeth Winstead

It’s not easy to play a cinematic dream girl, especially the inscrutable Ramona Flowers of Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs. the World , who literally meets our titular hero (played by Michael Cera) for the first time inside his own dream. Still, actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead pulls it off, and why shouldn’t she, after braving challenges like Live Free or Die Hard , Death Proof , and the upcoming remake of The Thing ? Just before Scott Pilgrim’s release this past weekend, Winstead called up Movieline to discuss elements of a fight scene you didn’t see, the film’s reshot ending, and the credit she’s got that’s even weirder than Scott Pilgrim.

Angelina Jolie and George Clooney to Play Marilyn Monroe and Frank Sinatra?

Um, OK! According to author Andrew O’H agan , Angelina Jolie will play Marilyn Monroe in the adaptation of his recent novel, The Life and Opinions of Maf the Dog, and of His Friend Marilyn Monroe . The book is told from the perspective of Monroe’s Maltese terrier, a gift she received from Frank Sinatra (who will supposedly be played by George Clooney, natch). No word yet on who will play the dog, but how long before Brad Pitt’s name surfaces? Now if you’ll excuse me, there’s a mountain of salt I have to choke on. [ The Guardian ]

Now Playing: A Stephanie Zacharek Video Review Double Feature!

As you know, Friday usually brings an abundance of video riches to Movieline, including chief film critic Stephanie Zacharek’s on-camera movie reviews. Today, however, Stephanie is doubling up! And why not, considering the exoticness of the pairing: Eat Pray Love and The Expendables (er, sorry, fellas: The Expendables and Eat Pray Love ), the estrogen ebb and the testosterone flow for a weekend when anything goes . Much like this video review, in fact. Take it away, Stephanie!

REVIEW: Exotic La Soga Succumbs to Standard-Issue Crime Clichés

A film loaded with interest that somehow fails to be interesting, La Soga is inspired by true events and not much else. A crime drama set in a satellite village orbiting Santiago, Dominican Republic, and occasionally New York City, it tells the story of Luisito (Manny Perez, who also wrote the film), an assassin-for-hire working for the local police and the American government to cleanse drug-dealing U.S. deportees from the streets. Social, moral, and personal themes abound, but are mostly left wandering shoeless among the extras, as Perez and American director Josh Crook get caught up in playing gangster film, Dominican-style.

Snooky the Cat Beats Jersey Shore’s Snooki to Trademark Punch

You may to have to wait a little longer for that Snooktionary — the reference book that Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi has threatened to have someone ghostwrite for her — because government officials have turned down the Jersey Shore star’s application to trademark her name for “printed matter” purposes. The Patent and Trademark Office was concerned that buyers might confuse the orange guidette with a yellow fictional cat named Snooky who is featured in the popular children’s book Adventures of Snooky . Polizzi has the option of either submitting evidence to support her case, or interpreting this as divine intervention to shy away from the literary world forever. [ TSG ]

Which Mad Men Emmy Rival Got NBC to Yank Jimmy Fallon’s Spoof Videos?

Can you be a sore loser before actually losing? Apparently! After NBC released a set of fairly amusing parody videos that showed Emmy host Jimmy Fallon channeling his inner Don Draper — complete with an appearance from Christina Hendricks — a network with a show nominated against the AMC drama got a bit peeved because the Emmy voting window is still open. The logic being that a spoof of Mad Men featuring the Late Night host could be enough to sway voters. Wait, what?

Bullying Inception Fans Turn Wrath on 11-Year-Old Movie Critic

We at Movieline know a thing or two about the tsunami of bile that accompanies even the slightest dissent from the cult of Inception — the taunting, abusive, bullying, emphatic hate ignited by a negative review. And then along came Jackson Murphy, a/k/a “Lights Camera Jackson,” an 11-year-old online movie critic who dared to take his own Inception disappointment live on CBS. All I can say is, “Welcome to the club, Jackson!” And also: “Who the hell are these people?”
