What’s On: Tumbling for Trivia

Downfall , ABC’ s new entry in the legacy of game shows with a “falling” conceit, debuts tonight. Could you answer general knowledge questions on a skyscraper that threatened to collapse beneath you? What if Chris Jericho was reading the questions with the ferocity of a middle-schooler who eats cane sugar for breakfast? What if the show turned into an upsetting WCW retread at a moment’s notice? With Jericho, that’s always a possibility. You can bow out now.

Remember When Last Comic Standing Became the Scariest Show on TV?

Last Comic Standing may not have a sterling reputation, but I’ve never known it to actually frighten viewers. Unfortunately, the venerable standup hour took a dark turn this week, introducing us to a “futuristic” comedian named Mr. Zed who looks like a Madame Tussaud’s rendering of Wink Martindale. Hide the kids! And the grown-ups.

Late Night Highlights: Salma Hayek Explains the Snake Incident and Jay Leno Remembers His Prom

It’s raining Grown Ups stars on the promotional circuit this week. Just last night, Salma Hayek stopped by the Late Show to plug the upcoming Adam Sandler film and explain what really happened during that Extra snake freakout . Meanwhile, Hayek’s co-star Maria Bello tried her best to not seem humiliated while telling Craig Ferguson that she accepted a paycheck for playing a chronic breastfeeder. Click through for those segments as well as the other highlights you missed last night while praying for an apology from Val Kilmer .

Heroes Movie Sounds Iffy

In today’s superhero-saturated world, do we really need a return engagement with a whole bunch of putative crusaders who almost never use their powers? That was NBC’ s thinking when the network snuffed the low-rated Heroes , and though creator Tim Kring has been trying to muster up support for a wrap-up movie, he admits to EW that he network has yet to pull the trigger. “Movies sometimes need a little distance from the television show,” he rationalized. Sorry, Tim. We’ve already moved on to Ant-Man . [ EW ]

So You Think You Can Dance Elimination: Blame Jason Mraz!

The adorable Alexie Agdeppa was sent home on So You Think You Can Dance last night, and I didn’t buy judge Mia Michaels’s explanation that Alexie’s hard work “didn’t show” during her performance. No way. Her performance was fine — if uneventful — but I think the whimsical trills of Jason Mraz blew it for her. When you hear his faux-reggae styling, do you want to dance the dance of a lifetime? No. You want to stay in Aeropostale a little longer and pick out another $7.99 pair of cargo shorts. It’s mall music, ladies! That’s just the truth. Whatever the reason, Alexie is gone — and we have video of her ill-fated dance and Mia Michaels’s comments after the jump.

The Critics Are Crazy About Jonah Hex!

When the news that you’re releasing a film actually surprises people, and the primary buzz the week of its release is how stunningly short it is, you know you’ve got a bit of a problem. But that’s the bed Warner Bros. made for itself with Jonah Hex — and that’s where critics found it today, lifeless, with a “DO NOT RESUSCITATE ” note taped to the pillow. Read on for a selection of noteworthy postmortems.

Jonah Hill: The Movieline Interview

If there’s a Jonah Hill you thought you knew, you won’t find him in Cyrus . Take it from Hill himself; the 26-year-old actor is acutely aware of how he’s perceived after starring in films like Superbad and Get Him to the Greek , and he hopes that his darker turn in Cyrus will surprise audiences the way it surprised him. Sure, it involves a lot of the improvisatory flair that he’s gotten down to a science, but as the title character — a manipulative man-child who’s determined not to lose his mother Molly (Marisa Tomei) to her new beau (John C. Reilly) — Hill gets to show off considerable dramatic chops, too. In an interview with Movieline, Hill couldn’t contain his excitement over the movie (directed by Mark and Jay Duplass), though when it came to the way it was being advertised, he had one strong quibble.

Jonah Hill Reveals the Story Behind His Scar

It’s said that comedy is pain, and while that pain can sometimes be metaphorical (just look at the recent, angsty roundtable THR conducted with some of TV’ s top comedic actors), it’s notable that two famous comedians have literal scars to bear. In 2008, after years of refusing to discuss the scar on her face, Tina Fey finally told Vanity Fair that it came from a random childhood attack she suffered at the hands of a stranger. Now, it’s Jonah Hill’s turn to open up.
