The Inspiration To Create ‘Hair Love’ Came From The Lack Of Representation Of Black Father & Daughters

See the original post here:

Source: Sony Pictures Animation / Sony Pictures Animation When the visuals for Matthew A. Cherry’s Hair Love came across our computer screen, we rejoiced at imagery that showed a Black father and daughter in such a positive light. It was the representation we rarely see, even if it is a cartoon. MUST READ:  Animated Short Film ‘Hair Love’ Celebrates Black Father & Daughter Relationships Hair Love , an animated short film about a father who takes on the battle of doing his daughter’s hair, will premiere ahead of The Angry Birds 2 movie in theaters this weekend, broadcasting the image in front of millions of children and families. We caught up with director Matthew A. Cherry and producer Peter Ramsey, who both opened up about creating the animated short and why it is important for all to see. HelloBeautiful: What inspired you to create Hair Love? Matthew:  I was seeing a lot of viral videos of African-American dads doing their daughter’s hair hitting the timeline and I always like to share family friendly stuff like that. They were going extra viral, 100K retweets, and I would always share videos of moms interacting with their kids too and it would do OK but never as big as that. Obviously they were cute videos but I would come to learn later that part of it was that people weren’t used to seeing these images of African-American fathers doing these type of interactions with their kids (especially when the hair would be moving and breaking rubber bands and hitting dad in the eye). The idea of hair having a mind of its own was the linchpin that created this idea. HB: How does it feel to finally have your work being shown on such a massive platform after so much work to get it made and funded? Matthew:  It’s kind of surreal. This literally started with an idea through Kickstarter and for it to be a New York Times best selling book and now about to be in theaters across the country is pretty crazy. It’s definitely surreal. I just really hope that it inspires other creators. Sometimes i think we waste so much time reaching out to people thinking that they have to help us with our ideas and help move them forward and sometimes all you have to do is put it out there and take that risk and bet on yourself and trust that you can raise the money yourself and get the idea to other likeminded creatives that will be able to help you with it and bring it to market. HB: How was it for you to be involved in the short film and taking on the role as Executive Producer? How was that process for you?  Peter: It was great because from minute one, I believed in Matthew. I knew he was a really talented, energetic, inspiring guy in his work and in his life. I got to see the story he wanted to tell and it felt like it was right for the time, its got its heart in the right place, it’s going to really speak to people, all of those things made it really easy for me. Really I’ve just been a cheerleader. I’ve just been doing whatever I could, whether it’s advice or encouragement or whatever little thing I could offer to help move it down the line. It’s Matthew and a fantastic team of really talented people working on it that have really brought it to life. Matthew:  Yeah, Bruce Smith, Everett Downing, Stacey Newton, Monica Young, Karen Toliver. It’s a great team. Peter : It’s been a whole lot of work and whole lot of love What did you learn about fatherhood in the process?  Peter:  I have three kids. I’ve experienced a lot of moments like this. I think from this film specifically, the thing that jumps out at me is a lot of it is about people supporting each other in family. You can see everybody in this family in some way shape or form has supported each other. It’s about the idea of a father listening to his daughter and her communicating something that’s really important to her and him understanding why it’s so important and doing what he can to help her express who she is and what she feels. I think that’s a huge part of what drives this movie and makes it feel special. It might not be something you think about watching it but that’s what’s under the surface. That part of a parent/child relationship I think is something people need to pay a lot of attention to and think about that because even the smallest kid is still a real person deserving respect and being allowed to express themselves. Amber Portwood Admits to Being a "Ticking Time Bomb"

Back on July 5, as you very likely know by now,  Amber Portwood was arrested on three charges of felony domestic violence. Prior to this date and this alleged incident, however, it appears the teen Mom OG star may have known that something explosive was on the way. Something explosive via her own hand, that is. In a sneak peek clip for next Monday night’s brand new episode of Teen Mom OG, Amber breaks down in tears during her therapy session. And thens he even says the following, presumably of herself and/or her mental status: It’s like a ticking time bomb. It’s unclear exactly when this admission was filmed, likely several weeks prior to Amber’s arrest. As seen in previous installments of the MTV franchise, Portwood recently started welcoming the network cameras inside her therapy sessions. In one episode, she was nearly in tears while admitting to her therapist that she wishes there was a cure for her mental illness so she can walk outside and be “happy.” Portwood also acknowledged a few weeks ago on air that she is “f-ckin nuts .” The polarizing mother of  two, who has never been quiet when it comes to this important topic, has said she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder when she was 17 or 18 years old. “I got like four different opinions and it was all the same,” she told Chyenne Floyd on a July episode of the show, adding at the time: “And then I had borderline personality disorder, BPD. That stems more from your childhood and things that you went through.” She added in this same discussion: “Obviously since the day we started this show, I’ve been f-cking nuts, so I mean, come on.” Amber has acknowledged in the past that she suffered from postpartum depression after giving birth to her son last summer. She even thought about killing herself at the time. Fast forward almost a year exactly and Portwood is accused of throwing a shoe at her boyfriend after the two got into an argument because the family  got stuck in traffic and missed a July Fourth fireworks show. Glennon told police that he hid in the couple’s bathroom after this, only for Portwood to use a machete and try to break the door down. Amber has reportedly admitted to the show throw, but denied the use a machete. In the month or so since this arrest, Portwood has been ordered to stay away from Glennon. She is permitted to see her son, but only under the supervision of a court-approved individual. The veteran reality star has also seemingly accused Glennon of cheating and, as you can read about below, of being a drunk driver. Portwood is next due in court on August 22 and, as always, The Hollywood Gossip will keep you well-apprised of the latest happenings and news in regard to this unfortunate scandal. Joshua Rush, Young Disney Channel Star, Comes Out as Bisexual

Joshua Rush, a 17-year old actor who played the first-ever openly gay Disney Channel character on the show Andi Mack , came out on Tuesday as bisexual. He did so via a series of revealing and candid Tweets. “first to respond to this tweet is bi lol,” Rush wrote, prior replying to his own post as follows: “first! i win! it’s me. i’m bi. And now that I’ve said that, I have a few things to rant about. “There are more important things to talk about than me liking a whole bunch of genders, but I do want to share a few things with you guys.” The actor then referenced his aforementioned Andi Mack character, expounding in detail: “I saw so many of you watch Cyrus come out and said ‘Hey! I can be me!’ How ironic, isn’t it, that me, playing that character, never had mustered up that courage? “Instead of feeling the courage to tell you today that I am an out and proud bisexual man because of the character I played for four years, I feel that courage thinking of all of you, who felt emboldened by Cyrus to come out.” Coming to terms with his sexual orientation was something Rush said was challenging for awhile… even while portraying a character going through a similar thing on screen. “I had a close friend of mine come out to me in fifth grade. FIFTH GRADE! That was well before I had any clue of my own identity and orientation. I suffered with some level of my own internalized homophobia even while playing the first openly gay character on Disney Channel,” he wrote, later adding: “I stuffed the existential crisis of talking about my sexual orientation into a box in my mind for years. Today, I release it into the world. “Being bi isn’t all of my identity, nor is it the most important part of my identity. “Bi erasure and issues like it are important, but trans women of color still have a life expectancy of THIRTY FIVE YEARS and that is absolutely unacceptable.” So … how did Rush get to this point? He gave a lot of credit to material produced by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), and he encouragedd his followers to donate to this organization. “Our show wouldn’t have existed in the form that it did without them, but also because their hard work in furthering acceptance in media helps an uncountable number of people,” he wrote, continuing: “I also want to encourage you to read their page on bisexuality. “It has been incredibly helpful to me, and their resources have helped me to find where I fit on the spectrum of sexuality.” Thankfully, most followers responded to Rush’s admission with praise and support. He concluded his honest and vital message as follows: I also want to ask you to donate to The Trevor Project, who are literally saving lives every day. Helping young LGBTQ+ voices feel heard and loved is utterly crucial. Thank you to you for giving me the courage to know who I am and tell you this today. Happy 20biteen! In Clueless White Folks News: THIS Is What Iggy Azalea Has To Say About Cultural Appropriation

View this post on Instagram Iggy Azalea is ready for her comeback. Are you? The infamous Australian rapper (and our September cover star) is here to claim her second chance. Read the interview at the link in our bio. A post shared by Cosmopolitan (@cosmopolitan) on Aug 6, 2019 at 5:00am PDT Iggy Azalea Talks Mental Health, Cultural Appropriation For Cosmopolitan Magazine Iggy Azalea is Cosmopolitan ‘s latest cover girl. Inside she opens up about her mental health, becoming an independent artist, and also chimes in on cultural appropriation… because, we so desperately need her thoughts on that, of course. According to Iggy — the same woman who has used the phrase “runaway slave master”and more in her lyrics — cultural appropriation is “subjective.” View this post on Instagram Oh hey, it's our September issue Swipe for a glimpse inside, then text “subscribe” to 77177 to get yours A post shared by Cosmopolitan (@cosmopolitan) on Aug 6, 2019 at 7:51am PDT Here’s the full excerpt written by Jen Ortiz over at Cosmopolitan : Today, it’s a fact that if you say “Iggy Azalea” three times in a mirror, a think piece will appear behind you waxing philosophical on the definition of “cultural appropriation” and authenticity. And not without reason. She is, after all, a white woman profiting off black culture. She raps with a “blaccent,” which, in her case, is an exaggerated Southern drawl that can’t be found in Australia. When asked about the issues surrounding “speaking black” in a 2013 interview with  Complex , Iggy responded, “If you’re mad about it and you’re a black person, then start a rap career and give it a go too.” A few months before that, Iggy faced backlash from fans who’d uncovered some old racist tweets she claimed were jokes. And before  that , she had to write an apology for using the phrase “runaway slave-master” in a lyric. If you’ve been reading this waiting to get to the part where Iggy apologizes for all the above—sorry, she’s not sorry. (The most sing-along-able lyric off one of her new songs is “I started to say sorry / But fuck that shit,” so yeah.) But listen, she does get it now. Sort of. She thinks cultural appropriation is subjective, even though she knows that sounds like a fucked-up thing to say. “You could ask one person of the same race, ‘Does this affect you?’ and they will say yes,” she explains. “But another person will say no. They could be from the same place, same everything, but have different perspectives about it.” Then again, can you really say sorry and then keep doing the same shit? (Her question.) “I’m still going to make the same type of music and still be ridiculous and larger than life,” she says. “So I can’t be that fucking sorry about it.” The way she sees it, the reason some people hate her is the same reason a lot of other people love her, so what’s she supposed to do? In fact, she describes her fans as “free thinkers.” As she puts it, “They have to be because if you thought what everybody else thought, you probably wouldn’t be a fan of mine.” Iggy used to feel really defensive about this stuff. “I would hit back and say, ‘What about this that I had to go through?’ because I wanted to talk so much about my experiences of things I didn’t have, and I think it felt like I wasn’t acknowledging that there is white privilege and there is institutionalized racism,” she says. “It seemed to a lot of people like I was living in this bubble or unaware of all these things that people have to experience.” The charitable interpretation is that Iggy understands that the criticism stems from America’s relationship with race and that  that  history is fucked up. And hey, if that’s how you feel or what you believe, she’s not taking away the fact that it’s real for you. The less charitable one is that she doesn’t care. Either way, she’s going to stop rage-tweeting about it. Welp, what more can we really expect?

Update: Reginae Explains #CucumberChallenge Party Attendance, Says She ONLY Went ‘To Spy’ On YFN Lucci

Source: Prince Williams / Getty Reginae Speaks On Cucumber Challenge Footage From Trouble’s Party By now you’ve probably heard about rapper Trouble’s out of control pool party at an Atlanta mansion. As previously reported Alexis Skyy is getting dragged for publically penetrating a woman with a cucumber during a poolside #CucumberChallenge . Reginae Carter also got hit with shade after folks noted that she previously called the challenge “disgusting” but was CLEARLY at the explicit festivities. Now Reginae’s explaining herself and telling her supporters that she’s innocent in this #CucumberChallenge calamity. According to Lil Wayne and Toya Wright’s daughter, she was in attendance to spy on her boyfriend YFN Lucci who enjoys #cucumberchallenges and got “dumped” by Reginae over it. Reginae says however that she left the pool party when the vegetables came out and also admitted to “looking like a fool” because of her on-again/off-again BF. “Okay guys . I wanna say this .. I went to the party to spy on ray(lucci). Females , don’t act like you never did it . But when I heard about the cucumber activities , I left. Tbh , I’ve made myself look like a fool for this man and I apologize for allowing you guys to see it . I’m young and still learning . Unfortunately, every move I make is publicized. I can’t control it . Imma try to be more private for now on . It’s hard because I’ve always been so open and honest . But I gotta learn how to deal with my problems alone and in private.” Ohhh Reginae. She’s constantly back and forth with Lucci so it seems plausible that she went to the party to “spy.” View this post on Instagram What do you think of the view ? Tristan Thompson: I SWEAR I Was Single When I Met Khloe Kardashian!!

By the looks of things on social media, Tristan Thompson has spent this summer trying to look like a good dad . Now, he’s using social media to defend the reputation of someone else — someone more deserving. Tristan is finally standing up for Khloe, saying that she’s never been a “side piece” and doesn’t deserve the backlash she receives. There are always, always rumors about Tristan’s activities. He took to Twitter to try to clear the air. “I have spent the last few months training for my upcoming nba season,” Tristan writes. “And making sure that I am in the best shape possible.” “I have not been on vacations at all this summer,” he clarifies. “And,” Tristan emphasizes. “The current rumors spreading are 100% false.” We’re not even sure which specific rumors he may mean — that’s how often Tristan’s alleged activities are the subject of speculation. It was, however, Tristan’s next tweet that really caught people’s attention. “Also,” Tristan announced to his legions of fans and followers. “When I met Khloe I was SINGLE.” “The negative comments that are constantly being directed towards her are unnecessary,” he continued. Tristan affirmed: “She does not deserve all this backlash for my wrong doings.” To borrow a folksy expression: well ain’t that the truth . “Both Khloe and Jordan have been nothing but great mothers to my kids,” Tristan praised. Khloe has also spoken out about reports that say that Tristan was still with a pregnant Jordan Craig when he hooked up with her. “MY TRUTH IS: I met Tristan because HE CHOSE to go on a blind date with me,” Khloe shared. She added that “A mutual friend set us up.” “After going on some dates, Tristan told me that he had an ex that was pregnant,” Khloe revealed. “Obviously,” she admitted. “I was reluctant about us continuing to date or start a relationship.” Khloe shared in her Instagram Stories that Tristan assured her that what he had with Jordan “was over long before we met.” “He had me talk with his most inner circle,” Khloe detailed. “He showed me physical [proof] (correspondence between the two).” “And had me on calls with his lawyers to prove his point,” she added. “His best friends, business associates, and even his mother told me,” Khloe recalled. “Him and his ex were broken up before we met.” Sometimes, people can seem almost too prepared to prove their case. Khloe continued, writing that she “believed and trusted” Tristan at that time. “If for any reason this is NOT in fact the truth,” Khloe expressed. “I am so completely and utterly sorry that TRISTAN and his inner circle would lie on something like this!” “I pray my truth is in-fact that,” she added. “Lord knows I pray but now, I really don’t know what to believe.” “Truthfully, from the deepest parts of my soul I am sorry!” Khloe wailed. “I’m sorry for any pain that has been created either way,” she concluded. “No woman deserves to go through anything like this! This is MY TRUTH.” View Slideshow: Khloe Kardashian Makes Stunning Admission, Says Tristan Thompson Threatened to Kill Himself

‘Basketball Wives’ Recap: This OG Situation Seems Like Colorism At Work

Read this article:

Source: Robin L Marshall / Getty Tonight’s episode of Basketball Wives finds us still in San Diego. Evelyn and Jennifer are finally friends again, but more beef lurks elsewhere, of course. Malaysia is annoyed that Evelyn and Jenn made up because she still doesn’t rock with Jenn. She didn’t think Evelyn would go for it, but she did so now Malaysia feels like she’s the only person left who hasn’t been fooled by Jenn. Other people in the group think it’s time to get Malaysia and Jenn together to talk, other people is Jackie. However, if you recall,  we last left Malaysia and Jenn’s relationship in shambles after Malaysia threw a table at Jenn because she felt like Jenn tried to use her to spread malicious rumors about Evelyn and her daughter. Forgiveness from Malaysia probably isn’t happening any time soon but she does plan to apologize to Jenn for throwing a table at her.  In other news, CeCe is preparing for her upcoming wedding, but Byron and his kids (including Kristen) still aren’t on the same page. There’s a chance that they might not show up to his wedding. However, Malaysia and Kristen still feel like they can work things out and be a happy family. We’ll see.  It’s dinner time now the ponderosa begins. Everyone feels the need to tell OG how wrong she was for spilling the tea about Kristen’s husband and talking smack about her man, yatta yatta. Now, OG was wrong for volunteering that information. However, OG brought up a good point when she mentioned that Kristen said lots of nasty things about her and her relationship. In OG’s mind, they were at a war of words and now they’re even. This isn’t enough for the rest of these hyenas. They harp on OG being wrong and really think she should apologize to Kristen. Mind you, no one is saying anything to Kristen, who definitely isn’t innocent. Once again, OG makes a good point, which is that if Kristen doesn’t talk about her nasty then she won’t talk nasty about Kristen.  Feby jumps into the mix and asks everyone to go downstairs to watch her new video. As everyone heads down, Jenn pulls OG aside and shows her a video of Feby talking smack about her, and then mentions how Feby told them she wrote a diss track about OG. Jenn is being messy, but she’s actually not wrong here. She just doesn’t want OG to be blindsided.  OG wastes no time going straight to Feby to see what’s up. She asks Feby directly if she wrote a diss track about her. Feby completely punks out. She was all talk when she was telling Evelyn, Shaunie, and Malaysia, verbatim, that she wrote a diss track about OG. However, she tells OG that she just said she wrote some rhymes about people who wear fake clothes. Everyone who heard Feby say what she said is looking at Feby sideways but none of them really call her out on it. OG then tells Feby that she could deliver those Nigerian fists of fury and kill her with her bare hands but has decided to keep it cute. Now, if you’ve been watching this show for multiple seasons you know dang well there has been a lot of aggression. Nothing should be that surprising, but apparently, OG’s comment is enough to shock everyone. Like, they’re literally all pretending to be appalled by OG’s commentary.  Shaunie even says that OG’s “aggression” is driving a wedge between her and everything else. So, all the times Tami attempted to beat the breaks off someone, all the time Evelyn has run across tables and also attempted to beat the breaks off someone, Jackie has actually fought and attempted to fight, Malaysia threw a dang table at Jenn, but OG, who has actually never attempted violence, simply speaking about violence while defending herself, is scaring them?  Yeah, okay. What’s the difference between OG and all of the aforementioned women? Complexion. People in these Twitter streets, self-included, think this is colorism at play. Debate your mother! Anyway, here’s what the Tweets are saying:  The colorism on this damn show is NOT ok, so Evelyn can act loud, scream and throw things..she’s not aggressive but OG is aggressive because she’s dark skin and they don’t find her attractive @ShaunieONeal your colorism is showing #basketballwives — Vanity Fair (@_exxotica) August 1, 2019 https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js Colorism at its best…smh…I will not watch again. It really saddens me to see GROWN black women bully other black women. OG have taught women how to stand up for themselves fade and all — Nicolee T. Henderson (@nicolee0007) August 1, 2019 https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js It’s absolutely colorism. OG hasn’t ever laid hand or thrown objects on anyone yet she’s all of a sudden super scary? FOH! https://t.co/oSEUCftiQ0 — Blocka Khan (@Starr_Rocque) August 1, 2019 https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js Anyway, Feby’s punk arse continues to lie to OG and talk circles around the situation so this is uneventful, but they do show Feby’s video and OG is even classy enough to stay and watch it.  It’s aight. She’s not the next hip-hop it girl, though.  Now we’re back in San Diego. Cece and Byron meet up with OG for dinner. OG wants to clarify the things Malaysia said about CeCe and Byon feeding OG info to use as ammo, and whether they’re using her or not. Byron and Cece deny this, of course. Byron said OG has always been cool, and so has her man and that the drama isn’t his style. He just wants to move on. He then says that his conversation with Malaysia was about trying to repair the family. Mind you, Byron never said what Malaysia said he said, but OG wants to know where the ammunition stuff is coming from and asks directly. Byron said he never said that. OG is cool with his answer and that’s that for now.  Byron and CeCe are coming across as really fake, but whatever. OG wouldn’t be in this situation if she had just minded her business, but I digress. Things will get worse in the upcoming episodes. There’s going to be another trip to Costa Rica, there will be more rumors started, some lie detector tests about who started what rumor and the old Jackie is definitely going to make an appearance too.  RELATED POSTS ‘Basketball Wives’ Recap: Evelyn Forgot About All Those Iyanla Lessons ‘Basketball Wives’ Recap: Shaunie Fights The Urge To Lay Hands on Jennifer

Lion SZN: Are These Interesting Facts About Leos True Or Nah?

See the rest here:

Source: Disney / Disney Leo season is among us, people! The fifth sign of the astrological year began on Tuesday and is here to snatch our edges until August 22. Leo’s have a reputation for being confident, carefree, powerhouse, full of conceit and strong mindedness. And those are their good qualities. On the flip side, the lions have a tendency to be pretty vain and overbearing. They tend to love excited most of the time, and even a little drama. But be sure to shower them with praise and attention if you want to stay on their good side. Some of our favorite people in the world were born under Leo sign. Everyone from Barack Obama, to Jennifer Lopez, to Halle Berry are reppin’ that Lion gang. But do they have anything in common?   @NatalieTweets: Leo’s have such a bad reputation, yes, we are intimidating, fiery and bad ass stubborn people but…we have such a lovely side too! We care ALOT! Love hard and stand up for what and who we believe in! But we do like having our own way and I guess that sometimes can be annoying @Astropoets: Assertive. Hot. Demanding of your attention but aware you want them even more. Leos are seductive. A Leo is allure. They will save you & not mention it at all. They are protectors. Leo ambition is unrivaled. Their ego huge. So what? It’s called star power. Welcome to Leo season. If you happen to know a Leo, which most of us most likely do, don’t let their fiery persona fool you. They may be lions, but there’s still a cub buried in there somewhere. Check the flip for some interesting Leo facts, and hit us on Twitter to share your thoughts.
