Kanye West Is Singing About Himself In ‘Runaway,’ Fans Say

MTV News asks Jay-Z and Eminem fans at Yankee Stadium what they thought of ‘Ye’s VMA performance. By Mawuse Ziegbe Kanye West performs during the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images NEW YORK — Kanye West drops some choice insults in his latest song, which he debuted at Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards . “I always find, yeah, I always find something wrong/ You been putting up with my sh– just way too long/ I’m so gifted at finding what I don’t like the most/ So I think it’s time for us to have a toast,” ‘Ye rhymes in “Runaway.” “Let’s have a toast for the douche bags!/ Let’s have a toast for the a–holes!/ Let’s have a toast for the scumbags!” The chorus has nods to an array of “bags,” however, fans believe the MC is, in a very un-hip-hop move, taking swipes at himself. MTV News caught up with a bunch of hip-hop heads at Jay-Z and Eminem’s Home and Home Tour stop at Yankee Stadium on Monday night (September 13), and many felt that Jigga’s “little brother” was using the track to air out his insecurities. “That was a funny song,” Steve Bananti said. “I liked the song a lot. It was good. I feel like he was making fun of himself.” Jamal Hairston said Yeezy’s lyrics reference “the stuff that he does” including the Taylor Swift 2009 VMA controversy . “I don’t think he was trying to insult [Swift]. I think it was self-deprecating. He was maybe talking about himself,” Hairston said, adding that the track is “a toast for the people who mess up.” “[He’s] trying to find some redemption, maybe.” Brian Bennett, who didn’t like the track, said ‘Ye was simply dropping insults for shock value. “I just thought that he was trying to get the crowd going crazy because he said the word ‘douche bag,’ ” he said. “I just feel like he was trying to get the crowd stirred.” Todd Read said he wasn’t feeling the track at first but might get into it after a few listens. “I’m a big Kanye fan but … I gotta hear the track un-performed. Maybe I’ll like it then. His music grows on me like that,” he said. Read, however, did enjoy West’s performance: “I liked to see him playing with the MPC and everything. I see he’s bringing it back to the real hip-hop roots, so I appreciated that.” Christian Contreras agreed that ‘Ye’s VMA set, which was low on props but big on impact, was another singular moment from the Chicago superstar. “I actually liked the song. I [liked] the whole performance; it was different. It’s definitely something that I wasn’t expecting, but Kanye always comes out of left field with everything,” he said. “The little toast to the douche bags, it’s cool.” Contreras speculated that ‘Ye’s track was not merely about how he feels, but rather how he’s been perceived by the media and fans alike. “All those names that he said — douche bag, a–hole, all that stuff — people have actually made that connection with him,” he observed. “I’m sure he got those names called to him a couple times. Maybe it was a little stab to the industry, talking about himself and how he’s changed.” What do you think Kanye West’s new song is about? Let us know in the comments! Justin Bieber’s Triple-Threat VMA Performance: Making The Show

Best New Artist winner was incredibly hands-on, weighing in on his dancers, drum kit and leather lettermen jackets before the big show. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber rehearses for the 2010 VMAs Photo: John Shearer/ WireImage Before Justin Bieber even hit the stage for rehearsal at L.A. Live on the Friday before the VMAs, you could feel the energy in the air. And once the teen pop star actually began rehearsing, it became clear Bieber’s Video Music Awards performance would be influenced by the “A Hard Day’s Night”-inspired VMA promo he shot. Bieber first did a rough run-through of a medley of his hits “U Smile,” “Baby” and “Somebody to Love.” Then he stepped out of a chauffeured red-and-white ’57 Chevy, followed by a gaggle of female fans — an obvious reference to the Beatles. When Justin took to the stage, he wanted to make sure he got everything right: from the way his drum kit sounded to the way his dancers hit their marks to the look of his leather jackets for the show. With the girls surrounding the stage as they watched Bieber rehearse, the driven, hard-working teen proved he would be hands-on and involved in every detail. What was perhaps most surprising was that his outdoor rehearsal went virtually unnoticed by anyone other than those involved with the practice session. While Bieber seemed to be nailing an engaging first VMA performance, Kim Kardashian could be heard teasing about their “romance” in a hilarious voiceover. As the hour-and-a-half-long rehearsal progressed, fans did eventually turn up — one even shouted to Bieber, “Follow me on Twitter!” — but the scene around the barricaded stage area remained relatively chill. Justin made sure to remind fans of one thing: “What’s up, everybody? I love you!” The rehearsal ended with Bieber at the drums, closing out “Somebody to Love,” with black and red confetti falling from the sky. It remained entangled in the trees right through Sunday, when yet more confetti came down on the Best New Artist winner. The Moonmen have all been handed out and the stars have gone home, but there’s plenty of 2010 MTV Video Music Awards news, interviews, behind-the-scenes scoop, party reports and more still to come, so keep it locked on MTVNews.com. Eminem And Rihanna’s Triumphant VMA Plan: Making The Show

Between commitments in Hawaii and NYC, the hit collaborators found time to kick off the show in style. By Jocelyn Vena, with additional reporting by James Montgomery Eminem performs during the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards Photo: Kevin Mazur/EM/WireImage In the days before Eminem’s opening performance at the 2010 Video Music Awards on Sunday, the MC had to do a little juggling. Not only did he have to make room in his schedule for the big show; he had to work out a cross-country trip so that he’d arrive in New York in time for the first of his two Yankee Stadium shows with Jay-Z on Monday night (September 13). But though the MC wasn’t able to stick around and accept his wins for Best Male Artist and Best Hip-Hop Video, he planned to open the show proving that he was already a winner. ” Eminem is opening the show , and the theme of his performance is ‘triumph,’ ” VMA executive producer Dave Sirulnick told MTV News in the days prior the broadcast. “It’s a testament to the year he’s had, his return to the top. He tells a story, and the viewers will definitely pick up on that.” At first, it seemed like Eminem wasn’t the only person with scheduling troubles. “Love the Way You Lie” collaborator Rihanna originally said she wouldn’t be able to make the show because she was in Hawaii, shooting “Battleship.” But then, she either changed her mind at the last minute or planned to trick us all along. The flame-haired singer took the stage and belted out her haunting chorus at the end of Em’s set. “SURPRISE!!!” she tweeted after the performance. “Just had to do it, guys.” The Moonmen have all been handed out and the stars have gone home, but there’s plenty of news, interviews, behind-the-scenes scoop, party reports and more still to come, so keep it locked on MTVNews.com. Eminem And Jay-Z Concerts: Comparing The Ballparks

How do Detroit’s Comerica Park and New York’s Yankee Stadium measure up? By James Montgomery New York’s Yankee Stadium Photo: Dave Gillum/ Diamond Images/ Getty Images On Thursday night, Eminem and Jay-Z will kick off their Home and Home concert series with a pair of shows at Detroit’s Comerica Park. Since he’s representing the home team, Em will headline both Comerica concerts, and when the series switches to New York’s Yankee Stadium on September 12-13, Jay will get top billing. Though we could spend endless hours discussing the two men who made these shows possible, it makes equally as much sense to take a look at the stadiums they’ll be playing in since, like Em and Jay themselves, they’re both icons of their respective cities. The similarities don’t stop there: Both Comerica and Yankee Stadium replaced beloved venues that played host to Major League Baseball for decades (the old Tiger Stadium — then called Navin Field — opened in 1912, and Yankee Stadium took its bow in 1923, as “The House That Ruth Built”). Both were designed by the Kansas City, Missouri, architecture firm Populous. Both have since played host to a World Series and an All-Star Game. And both go to great lengths to pay homage to their respective cities’ heritage and heroes. But those things are all mostly superficial. Because when you get down to the stats, Comerica and Yankee Stadium are about as different as two icons could be — sort of like Eminem and Jay-Z, when you think about it. So with Home and Home about to begin, here’s a look at the two places where Em and Jay will reign supreme: Comerica Park Nicknames : CoPa, Comerica, Comerica National Park (until they moved the fences in) First Opened : April 11, 2000 (the Tigers beat the Seattle Mariners 5-2) Price Tag : $300 million Capacity : 41,782 Dimensions : Left field, 345 feet; left-center, 370 feet; center field, 420 feet; right center, 365 feet; right field, 330 feet Signature Food Item : A coney dog from Leo’s (inside the stadium) or Lafayette Coney Island (outside). Also, since the Tigers are owned by Mike Ilitch — founder of Little Caesars — there is an abundance of pizza on hand too. Key Features : Comerica is certainly the only pro stadium in America to feature not only a carousel, but a Ferris wheel too. There’s also a massive beer hall, a water feature in center field that synchronizes music to spraying fountains (it’s officially called “Liquid Fireworks”), a series of six epic sculptures that pay tribute to Tigers greats Ty Cobb, Charlie Gehringer, Hank Greenberg, Willie Horton, Al Kaline and Hal Newhouser (legendary broadcaster Ernie Harwell is also memorialized with a statue), and, perhaps most notably, eight heroic statues of actual Tigers strategically placed throughout the ballpark. Previous Concert Experience : The Dave Matthews Band were the first act to play Comerica in the summer of 2000. And since then, big names like the Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, KISS and Aerosmith have all done the same. Eminem actually played a concert at Comerica in 2005, too, as part of his Anger Management Tour. Yankee Stadium Nicknames : The Stadium, the Bronx Bandbox, the Launching Pad (the ball tends to fly out of the place, if you couldn’t tell) First Opened : April 2, 2009 (a team workout day for fans); first regular-season game was April 16, 2009 (the Yankees lost to the Cleveland Indians 10-2) Price Tag : Somewhere in the neighborhood of $1.5 billion, though some estimates go as high as $2.3 billion. Capacity : 52,325 (including standing room) Dimensions : Left field, 318 feet; left center, 399 feet; center field, 408 feet; right center, 385 feet; right field, 314 feet Signature Food Item : A steak sandwich from Lobel’s (if you can stand the wait), fried pickles from Brother Jimmy’s. There’s lots to eat here, though, strangely, most of the pizza is terrible. Key Features : Aside from the beyond-expensive tickets for seats in the so-called “Legend’s Suite,” probably the grandiose limestone exterior, which matches the exterior of the old Yankee Stadium, or the iconic frieze that lines the upper deck, just like it did during the Babe Ruth days. There’s also the iconic Monument Park in center field, which honors previous Yankees greats, and the massive Great Hall, which does the same. What can we say? The Yankees are big on tradition. Previous Concert Experience : None. The September 12 Home and Home show will be the first show played at the new Yankee Stadium. Share your thoughts about the ballparks in the comments below! Jay-Z’s Yankee Memorabilia Is A Home Run, Fans Say

‘The Yankees selling Jay-Z stuff is just the best of both worlds,’ one fan says of Hov endorsing limited-run apparel ahead of concerts with Eminem. By MTV News staff Jay-Z and Yankees merchandise at Yankee Stadium Photo: Rya Backer/ MTV News Jay-Z already has one clothing line in Rocawear, and now that the Brooklyn rapper has partnered with the Yankees to co-brand threads in anticipation of his and Eminem’s September concerts , does Hov have a new empire on his hands? Well, not quite, since the Jay-Z/Yankee pact is only for a limited time . But MTV News hit the Bronx to get the word on whether the partnership is a home run. “I thought it was pretty cool, I think it’s cool that he’s doing stuff with the Yankees,” Paulette Esparza told MTV News. “The design is cool.” The line features an array of T-shirts, jerseys with S. Carter and the number four printed on the back (Jay’s birthday is December 4) and a series of fitted hats, including an all-black Yankees cap with The Blueprint 3 insignia on the side. The memorabilia is on sale, only at Yankee Stadium, through September 14. Despite the limited run, interest in the items appears to be high. (It remained unclear at press time whether Eminem would strike a similar deal with his hometown Detroit Tigers baseball team.) “I really like the hat, the hat is pretty cool,” Lauren Mastroianni said while visiting the ballpark. “I was just about to say that,” her friend Mike Nalafronte chimed in about the fitted cap. “With the emblem on it, I like that.” The marriage between Jay-Z and the Yankees began last year as the storied baseball franchise marched toward the World Series, which they eventually captured over the Philadelphia Philles in six games last October. Jay’s “Empire State of Mind” (featuring Alicia Keys) became the unofficial anthem of the team after captain Derek Jeter used the track for his at-bat music. Jay-Z then performed the number with Alicia Keys before Game 2 in New York and later rode with the team during their championship parade. The song also became the rapper’s first Billboard Hot 100 chart-topper, and the Yankees earned their 27th championship. “The Yankees selling Jay-Z stuff is just the best of both worlds, isn’t it,” tourist Alex Matthewson noted. Jay-Z Endorsing Limited-Run Line Of Yankee Memorabilia

Merchandise will include T-shirts, baseball caps and more to coincide with Yankee Stadium shows with Eminem next month. By Jayson Rodriguez Jay-Z Photo: Nick Laham/ Getty Images If Jay-Z made the Yankee hat more famous than the Yankees did like he claims in “Empire State of Mind,” now the rapper has the chance to prove it. He’s partnered with the championship baseball team to produce a limited run of Jay-Z-endorsed memorabilia, from T-shirts to sweatshirts to fitted caps, to coincide with his and Eminem’s performances at Yankee Stadium next month. The shows are scheduled for September 13 and 14 in the Bronx; the pair will also perform September 3 and 4 at Detroit’s Comerica Park. The co-branded merchandise goes on sale beginning August 30 at Yankee Stadium and will be on sale until September 14. Eminem spoke to Billboard.com on Friday (August 27) about the joint performances and said there won’t be any one-upmanship going on between himself and Jay-Z. (Sorry Tigers fans, sounds like there won’t be any Eminem/Detroit memorabilia available.) “Nah, I don’t think it’ll be anything like a competition,” Eminem said. “For the most part, me and Jay just want people to come out and have a good time. We want them to enjoy the music.” The Detroit MC was reserved when pressed for details regarding the event. He wouldn’t confirm set lists, guest appearances or whether he and Jay-Z would take the stage together at the same time. The pair collaborated once in the past on Jay-Z’s “Renegade,” which Eminem produced for the Brooklyn rapper’s The Blueprint album. “I don’t want to get into it too much,” Eminem said. “I don’t want to give anything away. But … I think it’ll be good. “Hopefully it’ll be songs that everyone is familiar with,” he added. By Hillary Crosley Eminem and Jay-Z perform on the “Late Show with David Letterman” Photo: Matthew Simpson/ CBS After selling out their upcoming concert at New York’s Yankee Stadium before tickets even officially went on sale, Eminem and Jay-Z took the stage on the “Late Show With David Letterman” Friday night. The two veteran MCs are promoting their co-headlining hometown stadium performances in Detroit’s Comerica Park and Yankee Stadium this September. Eminem, sporting a black jacket, jeans and a white shirt, began by presenting the comedic “Late Show Top Ten” list segment featuring his “Pieces of Advice for the Kids.” “If I sign something for you and I see it on eBay, when you go home, I’m gonna be under your bed,” Eminem joked, struggling to keep a straight face. He continued with, “Always purchase music through authorized retailers that pay royalties to the artists,” and “Remember the magic words: ‘Please,’ ‘Thank You’ and ‘Step Off Bitch.’ ” Jay-Z followed Em by sitting down and chatting with Letterman about his and the Detroit MC’s working relationship. “We did a song on my album called Blueprint — the first one, I’ve got a lot of them — called ‘Renegade’ and it was good,” Jay said. “When you make good songs, you become friends.” Letterman then asked why the pair are just deciding to tour together now. “Em is a notorious non-tourer,” said Jay. Later, Hov almost argued the positives of NBA baller LeBron James leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers and joining the New Jersey Nets, which the rapper co-owns, before stopping himself. “There’s rules and guidelines that I want to be very certain to follow,” Jay told Letterman. “Everyone would love to have a LeBron James on their team. He’s a free agent come July 1. We’re gonna try after July.” Letterman disagreed with Jay’s interest in James, saying, “If LeBron James wants to be a guy, he will stay where he is and not cut the heart out of that city by leaving Cleveland.” At press time, the basketball player’s decision is still anyone’s guess. Then Jay and Eminem’s pre-taped performance rolled. The gents played three songs with a live band, opening with Eminem’s latest single “Not Afraid” before moving into Jay’s “On to the Next One” from 2009’s The Blueprint 3. As a grand finale, the pair performed “Renegade,” their first collaboration from Hov’s 2001 album The Blueprint. The mini-concert was originally filmed earlier this week atop the Ed Sullivan Theater . The hip-hop titans will appear at Detroit’s Comerica Park and New York’s Yankee Stadium in September. The two hip-hop titans have announced a two-part concert event to be held at each of their hometown’s own baseball stadiums. Eminem will headline a concert on Thursday (September 2) at Comerica Park in Detroit as the Tigers slug it out in Minnesota, while Jay-Z will represent New York at Yankee Stadium on Monday (September 13) as the home team hits the road for Florida. The two-night concert event will be produced by Live Nation. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime set of shows and I know we’re both really going to bring it to our hometowns,” Eminem said in a press release. “The fans are going to love this and so am I. It’s gonna be historic.” “These shows are like a dream come true,” Jay-Z offered. “I’ve always hoped that hip-hop could play any stadium like other genres of music. How perfect is it that Eminem and I get to play our hometowns and show how far the live rap experience has come? Fun and historic — a great combination all around the board.” Speaking with ESPN’s Dave O’Brien and Rick Sutcliffe during Wednesday’s game between the Yankees and the Tigers, Eminem said of the event , “We had talked about doing something together again soon anyway — we just tried to come up with the best way and biggest way to do it. “We’ve done things together, smaller shows and whatnot,” he continued. “But I’m not sure we’ve ever done anything this big.” “I look for opportunities to work with Em,” Jay-Z added. “Any time we get a chance to collaborate on things …” Ticket information for the event is currently unavailable.
