It’s time once again to return to Movieline’s recently undertaken mission to honor this year’s acting and directing nominees with a tribute that will surely outlive any trophy they could ever hope to receive: one of our inaugural Awards-Season Trading Cards. Today, let’s give it up for Best Actress Oscar nominee Michelle Williams!

The Mechanic’s Ben Foster on Gun Porn, Producing and Pedophile-Baiting

One look at the gun-crazy poster for The Mechanic and you know what you’re in for with this week’s hit-man thriller: Lots and lots of gun porn. Pairing Jason Statham as a calculating, composed assassin and Ben Foster as his boss’s loose cannon of a son, director Simon West remakes the original 1972 Charles Bronson flick of the same name with a greater focus on his characters. But the initial appeal, as Foster tells Movieline, was the prospect of getting to “blow sh*t up” with Jason Statham.

The Social Network’s Michael De Luca: ‘We’ve Kind of Thought of Ourselves as an Underdog from the Beginning’

With eight nominations , perhaps The Social Network isn’t the slam dunk runaway Best Picture favorite everyone thought it was, but that doesn’t mean producer Michael De Luca ( Boogie Nights , Magnolia ) is disappointed with what transpired this morning. In fact, trailing The King’s Speech and True Grit in total noms just plays into Team Social Network ‘s wheelhouse.

Team Jacki Update: We Need a Battle Cry. Any Suggestions?

Longtime proponents of Animal Kingdom co-star Jacki Weaver were thrilled this morning to hear their hero’s name announced among this year’s five Best Supporting Actress Oscar nominees. And the Australian legend’s warm if brief response has just come over the transom at Team Jacki HQ: “I’m elated to the point of euphoria. I feel like I’m in a walking dream. I’m so relieved that all those millions of Australians that wanted me to get this nomination aren’t disappointed. Happy Australia Day.” Aw! To you as well, Ms. Weaver. That said, this got serious today — and we need more than press statements. We need a slogan; we need a battle cry .

Hot Sundance Trends: Actors Directing!

“But I really want to direct” isn’t just a cliché — it’s also a burning ambition among the movies’ thespian class. And where better for actors-turned-filmmakers to premiere their wares than the Sundance Film Festival? This year’s aspirants to the hyphenate throne of Clooney, Eastwood and Dennis Dugan include:

5 Oscar-Nominated Roles of 2011 and Their Oscar-Winning Forebears

The Oscars mean nothing without their celebrated past, and this year, five Oscar-nominated performances stood out to me as the descendants of five previous winners. Can you name the Academy-loved role that almost perfectly mirrors Nicole Kidman’s in Rabbit Hole ? The consecutive Oscar-winning Best Actors who laid the track for Mark Zuckerberg? What about the histrionic mother who predated Melissa Leo’s character in The Fighter . Join us for a trip into the Oscar vault. For the hell of it, we’re picking which performances were better, too.

Fox Searchlight Buys Awards-Ready Martha Marcy May Marlene

Well, I got the bidding-war part right, but I’m somewhat surprised to hear Fox Searchlight was the one to grab the tiny, acclaimed rehabbing-cult-member drama Martha Marcy May Marlene off the Sundance market. The distributor closed the deal this afternoon; neither a sale price nor a release date are set, but count on fall 2011 for an Elizabeth Olsen awards push . And alternate title suggestions remain welcome! [ Fox Searchlight ]

Late Night Highlights: Stephen Colbert Does His Keith Olbermann Impression

Stephen Colbert tried his best to absorb Keith Olbermann’s essence Highlander -style on last night’s Colbert Report , but found that his body rejected it like a pompous kidney. Elsewhere, Conan O’B rien sympathized with the former MSNBC pundit, Cory Monteith talked crashing a school bus and Jon Stewart challenged his staff to a Nazi-themed scavenger hunt.

NSFW: Sasha Grey Gets In on the I Melt With You Action

Thanks to near-lethal levels of abstraction, randomness, lack of context and all-around puzzlement, the five-part package that makes up I Melt With You ‘s awesome viral campaign is the most collectible set of movie marketing since Burger King offloaded Empire Strikes Back drinking glasses. And now, finally, it’s co-star Sasha Grey’s turn to get your brain cramping. Topless, of course. Did I mention this is NSFW ?
