Jussie Smollett Attack: What are the Actual Suspects Saying?

Ever since Jussie Smollett was shockingly freed from facing charges related to the alleged attack against him in Chicago, many people have spoken out. There were Smollett’s lawyers . There was Smollett himself . There was a very angry Rahm Emanuel . But two people have remained unsually silent throughout this ordeal… … Abel and Ola Osundairo. The Nigerian brothers were brought in by the Chicago Police Department several weeks ago as the main suspects in this case. And this is where things started to take a turn against Smollett, considering the siblings had worked as extras on Empire and has also trained the actor in the gym. How could his assailants have had a connection to him? How could they have been African-American, when Smollett swore his attackers were white? Could the siblings have been paid by Smollett to orchestrate the incident and only pretend to beat him up? This became the working theory, and it was exacerbated after a check written to the brothers emerged, as well as text messages between Smollett and Abel. Said an attorney for the brothers, just a few days before the charges against Smollett were dropped: “My clients have tremendous regret over their involvement in this situation, and they understand how it has impacted people across the nation, particularly minority communities and especially those who have been victims of hate crimes themselves.” So… what do they have to say now? In light of Smollett getting off entirely? Nothing. That’s the weird thing. According to TMZ, the lawyer for Abel and Ola urged them to make a public statement very soon after the Smollett news went viral yesterday. But they refused to do so — and, in response, lawyer Gloria Schmidt actually quit, saying she no longer wished to represent Abel and Ola. The cops and prosecutors both say the brothers were the ones on the street with Smollett on the night of the attack. Naturally, all observers are now wondering what role they played because there are really only two scenarios: 1. They did commit the assault. 2. They helped Smollett fake it and cover it up. Considering they weren’t arrested for the former, wouldn’t they want to speak out and clear their names in regard to the latter charge? This whole thing is such a confusing mystery. The man responsible for dropping the charges against Smollett, First Assistant State’s Attorney Joseph Magats, says his decision does not exonerate the star. “We stand behind the investigation, we stand behind the decision to charge him and we stand behind the charges in the case,” Magats said yesterday, adding: “The mere fact that it was disposed of in an alternative manner does not mean that there were any problems or infirmities in the case or the evidence.” Magats later tried to say that Smollett did not commit a violent act and that’s the only reason his office chose not to pursue this case. Again, it’s a confusing mystery. But not to Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel. “This is a whitewash of justice,” the politician told reporters on Tuesday, continuing as follows: “I’d like to remind everybody a grand jury indicted this individual based on only a piece of the evidence that the police had collected in that period of time. So a grand jury actually brought the charges… You have a person using hate crime laws that are on the books to protect people who are minorities from violence to then turn around and use those laws to advance your career and your financial reward. Is there no decency in this man? Sounds like a fair question. View Slideshow: Jussie Smollett: This is How He Staged His Alleged Assault

Hawaii Has People Talking Over News That They’re Considering Raising The Legal Smoking Age To 100

Visit link:

Source: Mike Alarid / EyeEm / Getty This new legislation being proposed by Hawaii is so smart, you’ll wonder why nobody has ever thought of it before. All across the many islands that make up Hawaii, there are approximately 150,000 smokers. According to the state legislature, that number is about 150,000 too many-so they’re working on an idea to change that. In an effort to bring that number down rapidly, one legislator has proposed a new law that would  outlaw the sale of cigarettes to anyone under the age of 100. Yep, you read that right. 100-years-old. “Basically, we essentially have a group who are heavily addicted — in my view, enslaved by a ridiculously bad industry — which has enslaved them by designing a cigarette that is highly addictive, knowing that it’s highly lethal. And, it is,” Representative Rich Cregan, the one who proposed the bill, told the  Hawaii Tribune-Herald . The bill reads, in part, “In Hawaii, cigarettes have caused more preventable disease, death, and disability than any other health issue, each year claiming the lives of more than one thousand four hundred adults and contributing to more than twenty thousand premature deaths of minors.” Beside his role in politics, Cregan is also a physician and he asserts that the already increased purchasing age has curbed tobacco usage, but just hasn’t curbed it enough. Research does show that most tobacco addictions start young: According to the American Cancer Society , almost 90 percent of cigarette smokers start before they even reach 18-years-old. This proposed legislation should really come as no surprise from a state like Hawaii , who already has some of the strictest cigarette laws on the books; They’re one of six states which have raised the minimum purchase age for tobacco–including e-cigarettes–to 21-years-old. If this new bill passes, the ban will go into effect gradually: the minimum age will increase to 30-years-old in 2020, 40-years-old in 2021, 50-years-old in 2022, 60-years-old in 2023, and finally, by 2024, the legal age for purchase will jump to 100-years-old. Included in this, however, is that tourists will still be able to bring cigarettes with them to the island. Beyond that, this ban will not include e-cigarettes, cigars, or chewing tobacco in order to make the bill legally sound. Though setting the age to 100 seems like a not-so-sly scheme to just eradicate cigarettes altogether,  Hawaii is actually home to the highest concentration of centenarians (a person who is one hundred or more years old) in the United States. Are you on board for taking the legal age for cigarettes from 21 (or 18 in many places) to 100?!

Cory Booker Announces He’s Running For President

Read more:

N ew Jersey Senator Cory Booker has announced his candidacy for president, joining what was expected to be a crowded field of people challenging Donald Trump for the White House. Booker, 43, made his announcement Friday morning, NBC News reported . “I believe that we can build a country where no one is forgotten, no one is left behind; where parents can put food on the table; where there are good paying jobs with good benefits in every neighborhood; where our criminal justice system keeps us safe, instead of shuffling more children into cages and coffins; where we see the faces of our leaders on television and feel pride, not shame,” he said. “It is not a matter of can we, it’s a matter of do we have the collective will, the American will? I believe we do. Together, we will channel our common pain back into our common purpose. Together, America, we will rise.” Booker’s announcement came about a week after California Sen.  Kamala Harris threw her presidential hat in the ring and said she would be running for the White House. Trump and Booker have been taking shots at each other for years now. But it was perhaps Booker’s role on the Senate Judiciary Committee that may have compelled him most to run for president after he saw firsthand the types of judges Trump has been pushing to be confirmed. While he has always been a prominent voice in the Senate, Booker raised his political profile significantly during the Senate confirmation hearing for Brett Kavanaugh , who was nominated by Trump and ultimately confirmed as a Supreme Court Justice despite a damning sexual abuse scandal that resurfaced from his past. Booker was also behind the introduction and Senate passing of the landmark legislation last year to finally outlaw lynching. Booker, Harris and Republican Sen.  Tim Scott introduced the  Justice for Victims of Lynching Act of 2018  in June. The bill called for a life sentence for those found guilty on federal anti-lynching charges. After helping to draft the legislation in June, Booker criticized Congress for taking so long—even after the civil rights movement—to pass anti-lynching legislation. “It’s a travesty that despite repeated attempts to do so, Congress still hasn’t put anti-lynching legislation on the books. This bill will right historical wrongs by acknowledging our country’s stained past and codifying into law our commitment to abolishing this shameful practice,” he said in a statement. Barbershop Books Empowers Black Boys To Read

A former educator is on a mission to promote literacy among Black youth. Through his program Barbershop Books, entrepreneur Alvin Irby is bringing literature to barbershops across the country to inspire young African American boys to read, the Tuscaloosa News reported. “Once you figure out how students identify,” @AlvinIrby says, “then you can begin to craft [reading] experiences that are customized to who they are and what's most important to them.” Read more: https://t.co/EH3G0IisNt #ThrowbackThursday — Barbershop Books (@BarbershopBooks) January 3, 2019 The inspiration for the program came nearly 10 years ago when Irby saw one of his students at the barbershop, the news outlet writes. The student—who struggled with reading—was idle while waiting for his haircut and Irby thought that would have been the perfect time for him to work on his literacy skills. A few years later Irby—who taught in Harlem and the Bronx—moved forward with the launch of his organization. Irby believes that representation is everything and it’s important for Black youth to see themselves reflected in the literature that they consume. Through the program—which was created for youngsters between the ages of 4 and 8—the young readers provide suggestions for the types of books that they want to see in barbershops. Irby then ships those books to barbershops throughout the country. The program also allows companies, nonprofits, and individuals to sponsor book stations at barbershops within their communities. “I think many children think learning isn’t for them because they’re forced to choose between who they are and school. But you can be who you are and still be brilliant. You can like rap and be a great reader,” Irby told the news outlet. “Barbershops are like a cultural center for black males. For a lot of boys the barbers are a stable male role model and black boys go there regularly.” Since its inception five years ago, Barbershop Books has expanded into nearly 40 cities and is included in 120 barbershops. There has been a major effort to change the narrative surrounding Black youth and literacy. A group of fifth-graders at the Truesdell Education Campus in Washington, D.C. launched a book club after a Black student shared that he struggled with reading because he didn’t see himself reflected in the characters of the books that he was given. 3 Charged For Allegedly Killing Mother, Wounding Kids And A Dog In Shooting At Gender Reveal Party For Chick Who Wasn’t Pregnant

Source: Jeneil S / Getty 3 Men Charged In Gender Reveal Mass Shooting Three Cincinnati, Ohio area men have been arrested and charged for a mass shooting that took place at a gender reveal party back in 2017 for a woman who wasn’t even knocked up. According to ABC News , the 2017 shooting left one woman dead and eight wounded. Three children and a dog were among the wounded. Police determined the shooting was targeted and drug-related after connecting multiple witnesses to drug rings. “From the very beginning of this investigation, we met significant resistance that is uncommon from victims of crime wanting a resolution,” Denney told the Cincinnati Enquirer. A grand jury indicted 28-year-old Roshawn Bishop, 23-year-old James Echols and 21-year-old Michael Sanon on 22 counts of various charges including murder, aggravated robbery and cruelty to animals. The gunfire at a home northwest of Cincinnati killed 22-year-old Autum Garrett, of Andrews of Indiana. The victim’s husband and two children were injured in the shooting. Garret was the cousin to the host of the party — who investigators claim was not even pregnant at the time. The party was held for then 21-year-old Cheyanne Willis, who claimed to have suffered a miscarriage after being shot in the thigh. Investigators later found that she was not pregnant, to begin with. Lord!
