Race Matters: White Hollyweird Actors Mum On Syria For Fear Of Seeming “Anti-Black” For Opposing Obama

Hollywood Mum On Syria For Fear Of Seeming “Anti-Black” SMH. Actors scared of being called racists ?? According to Hollywood Reporter: In 2003, ahead of a U.S. attack on Iraq, a robust anti-war movement in Hollywood included a TV commercial starring Martin Sheen and Sean Penn visiting Baghdad. There were online petitions signed by Ed Asner; letters to President George W. Bush pleading for peace were signed by Matt Damon, Tim Robbins, Barbra Streisand and Alec Baldwin; former M*A*S*H star Mike Farrell fronted multiple press conferences where celebrities denounced war. The good news for President Barack Obama as he considers a military response against Syria for using chemical weapons against rebels is that he probably won’t have to deal with a similar anti-war movement from Hollywood. But that’s not because there isn’t opposition. It’s just not organized, and, as Asner and Farrell – two of the industry’s most vocal progressive activists — told The Hollywood Reporter Friday, perhaps it never will be. While some conservatives see hypocrisy, Farrell says that an all-out war in Iraq under Bush, a Republican who was very unpopular in Hollywood, was a much bigger deal than potential missile strikes against Syria under the direction of Obama, a Democrat who drew millions for his campaigns from showbiz industry donors. Asner, 83, and Farrell, 74, both expressed extreme disappointment in Obama for advocating military action. “What he is talking about in Syria is a potential war crime,” Farrell said. “It will be illegal, and if citizens are killed it certainly could be considered a war crime.” Also, said Asner, unsuccessful efforts to prevent war in Iraq led to complacency among left-wing activists. “We had a million people in the streets, for Christ’s sake, protesting Iraq, which was about as illegal as you could find. Did it matter? Is George Bush being tried in the high courts of justice?” asks Asner. “We’ve been so God-damned stung in this country by false wars, repeatedly, that, how can you believe in any just war with the history we have had?” Another reason some Hollywood progressives have been reticent to speak out against war in Syria, according to Asner, is fear of being called racist. “A lot of people don’t want to feel anti-black by being opposed to Obama,” he said. Asner said Hollywood activists should read a Huffington Post blog item by Dennis Kucinich, where the former congressman lists the “Top 10 unproven claims for war against Syria.” “Whether it’s a Republican or Democrat president, or Republican or Democrat Congress — and it doesn’t make a God-damned difference — it behooves us to get off our ass and ask these questions,” Asner said. Farrell and Asner both say that beating the war drums on Syria is one of many mistakes Obama has made. “I voted for him, but I’m not proud. He hasn’t thrown himself on the funeral pyre. I wanted him to sacrifice himself. Instead, he has proved himself to be a corporatist, and as long as he’s a corporatist, he’s not my president,” Asner said. “A lot of people have lost hope — with the betrayals, the NSA spying … People aren’t getting active because ‘Who gives a sh*t?’ is essentially the bottom line.” Thoughts?? Bolitics As Usual: Hatin’ Azz Congressman Dennis Kuchinich Says President Obama’s Action Against Libya Is Cause For Impeachment!

After declaring President Obama’s decision to order airstrikes on Libya a potential “impeachable offense,” Ohio Democratic Congressman Dennis Kucinich is calling for an immediate halt to all funds for any further military action in the conflict. “Now the immediate thing that Congress needs to do when it returns is to cut off any funds for continuing in Libya and I intend to bring forward such an amendment,” Kucinich said in an interview with CNN, noting any legislative action would have to wait until after the current Congressional recess. White House officials insist the President’s actions are well within the law, pointing to a letter sent by Mr. Obama to House Speaker John Boehner Monday. The letter emphasizes the airstrikes are part of an international mission to enforce a “no-fly zone” authorized by a United Nations Security Council Resolution. The letter, the administration argues, satisfies the War Powers Act which requires the President to inform Congress within 48 hours of engaging in any military action. “Our view is a mission of this kind which is time limited, well defined and discreet clearly falls within the president’s constitutional authority,” said Deputy National Security Advisor Ben Rhodes at a press briefing Monday. Other Democrats came out to defend the President against the hatin’ a** congressman: One key Democrat in the Senate dismissed any notion of impeachment in a radio interview on Tuesday. Michigan Democratic Senator Carl Levin told the Bill Press Radio Show there is strong bipartisan support for the U.S. mission in Libya, dubbed Operation Odyssey Dawn. “I think we ought to focus on what the issues are here,” Levin said. If it ain’t one thing it’s muthaf*ckin’ other, damn! Several other Presidents have taken military action in the same manner and they weren’t met with this “impeachment” bullsh*t. Folks will do whatever they can to keep our man Barry O out of office in 2012 won’t they? SMH Source

FDA Barring Food Makers from Advertising Products as GMO-Free

The FDA meanwhile appears to be enforcing a policy of barring food producers from trumpeting that their products don’t contain genetically modified ingredients. According to the Washington Post, the FDA has sent a “flurry of enforcement letters” to companies that have advertised GMO-free products on their labels. The warnings come on top of existing policy not to require food makers to disclose if their products do contain GMOs. Congress member Dennis Kucinich said, “This, to me, raises questions about whose interest the FDA is protecting. They are clearly protecting industry, and not the public.” added by: treewolf39

Kucinich Predicts Health Care Will Pass by One Vote

Congressman Dennis Kucinich predicted Saturday that the health reform bill will win passage in the House on Sunday by just one vote. Kucinich likened the bill to “the political equivalent of castor oil” but said he has been working to get remaining holdout Democrats to vote for it. The Ohio Democrat, who earlier was a holdout himself, made the comments in an interview conducted by Truthdig Managing Editor Peter Z. Scheer and podcast producer Joshua Scheer. truthdig_kucinich_health_care_switch.mp3
