Kelly is still inside of a jail cell this morning as his lawyer, Steve Greenberg says the 51-year-old singer does not have the money to immediately post his $100,000 bail . According to Newsweek , Greenberg told reporters on Saturday that he is confident Kelly will be able to produce the money eventually. The singer also owes $162,000 in back child support to ex-wife, Andrea Kelly . Greenberg also said that Kelly’s defense team is pleased with the bail amount, given the severity of the counts against his client. Kelly is being charged with 10 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse. “Right now he’s presumed innocent,” he said according to CNN. “We haven’t seen any reason to believe that these allegations are credible. Mr. Kelly is strong, he’s got a lot of support and he’s going to be vindicated on all these charges—one by one if it has to be.” Kelly has long denied the allegations against him. After Jussie was accused of staging the hate crime, and subsequently charged with felony disorderly conduct, many public figures have spoken out about the bizarre story—including, Senator Kamala Harris. Harris, who after finding out Smollett had been attacked hailed him as one of the “kindest” and “most gentle human beings” she knows, now says she is “disappointed.” “Like most of you, I’ve seen the reports about Jussie Smollett, and I’m sad, frustrated and disappointed. When anyone makes false claims to police, it not only diverts resources away from serious investigations but it makes it more difficult for other victims of crime to come forward,” she wrote in a statement, according to The Grio . Despite frustration with Smollett, Harris doesn’t want us to forget that hate crimes are on the rise , stating “ At the same time, we must speak the truth: hate crimes are on the rise in America. Just last year, the FBI released statistics that revealed a 17 percent increase in the number of hate crimes in America.Part of the tragedy of this situation is that it distracts from that truth, and has been seized by some who would like to dismiss and downplay the very real problems that we must address. We should not allow that. I will always condemn racism and homophobia. We must always confront hate directly, and we must always seek justice. Why? It’s the question that all celebrity gossip fans and even hard news followers continue to ask when it comes to Jussie Smollett. Why on earth would he orchestrate an assault against himself in Chicago, as he stands accused of doing by the Chicago Police Department? On Thursday morning, Smollett turned himself into the police on a charge of falsifying an official report. This is a felony that could land the Empire actor behind bars for three years and it stems from an incident that he claimed took place around 2 a.m. on January 29. As you must know by now if you’re reading this, Smollett made national headlines by alleging that not only was he attacked on the way home from a late-night snack, but… The attackers were white. They yelled racial and anti-gay slurs in his direction. They screamed he was in “MAGA country.” They tied a rope around his neck. They poured bleach all over him. Based on interviews with two Nigerian brothers, who know Smollett well and who told cops he hired them to stage this event, along with evidence gathered via cell phone records and surveillance video, the police now believe none of the above happened. Initial reports alleged Smollett was getting written off Empire and this was a last-ditch attempt to save his job. During a press conference late this week, the police superintendent came right out and said Smollett committed this crime because he was upset about his salary. Neither of these explanations makes much sense. So TMZ has now offered up another. Sources have told this website that Smollett may have been inspired by an attack on the cousin of Empire creator Lee Daniels. Like Smollett, his cousin is gay. Lee shared a video on Instagram on January 10 calling out homophobia because, in that same post, the veteran producer wrote: “This past week my cousin was beat up for being gay and I am sick of hearing these stories.” Smollett has been an active member of the LGBTQ community for years and, as far as this theory goes, he was trying to alert the world to the rampant homophobia out there by making himself a very public victim. It’s worth emphasizing: This is just a theory. In a couple more updates to this crazy story: Smollett has been written out of the final Empire episodes of this season, but has not been officially fired. The siblings who have admitted to working with Smollett on this set-up told a grand jury on Wednesday that the $3,500 check they received from the actor was actually NOT a payment for their role in the act. They say it really was payment for help with personal training. Again: This story is downright crazy. And it doesn’t appear as if it will calm down any time soon. By the time first responders got on the scene the man that had caught on fire had died from his injuries. After all the fires were put out several photos of the damage was posted on social media. No one was at the stadium at that time. Now that Jussie Smollett has been arrested for falsifying a police report, we have a much clearer idea of how the actor went about staging his own assault. Allegedly, that is. Courtesy of documents filed by prosecutors at Smollett's bond hearing on February 21, we know when Smollett contacted the men who would help his go through with this scheme… what the original plan was between the trio… and what Smollett provided these men with in order to carry out the supposed assault. Again: Allegedly, that is. The details described here are chilling and disturbing. Scroll down to get a fuller picture of exactly what Smollett is accused orchestrating. 1. Smollett is Free on $100,000 Bond He was released from jail on Thursday afternoon and rushed to a waiting SUV, not saying anything to the throng of reporters gathered around him as he made his way to the car. 2. What Has He Been Charged with Again? Felony disorderly conduct – for falsifying a police report. The charge he faces carries a maximum sentence of three years in jail. 3. The Judge Comes Down Hard During Thursday’s proceedings, members of Smollett’s family were in the courtroom with him as the judge, John Fitzgerald Lyke Jr., said that he found the investigators’ account of the incident disturbing, especially the assertion that Smollett had used a rope around his neck to heighten outrage. 4. What Did the Judge Say? “We live in a country where you are presumed innocent,” he told the actor “However, if these allegations are true, I find them utterly outrageous. Especially the violent, despicable use of a noose, which conjures such evil in our country.” 5. As for the Details in These Legal Documents? They start with the letters sent to Smollett on the set of Empire. It remains a little ambiguous whether police believe Smollett sent them to himself, but they contained a powerdery white substance. 6. Was It Anthrax? The drama went into overdrive on Thursday’s Grey’s Anatomy. The hospital was inundated with a string of drug overdoses after a group mixed meth and opioids. One of the patients was Betty/Britney. Amelia was aghast because she was trying to get the teen clean, but was failing miserably. This all occurred while Owen and Amelia were gearing up to say goodbye to the teenager and her son, Leo after her mother and father returned. “I hope you play soccer,” Owen told Leo. “I hope you love your life,” Amelia added. “I’m always gonna be rooting for you,” Owen later said to the youngster as Betty’s parents showed up to collect him. That’s when news of Grey Sloan being hammered with the patients popped up. When Betty woke up, she told her boyfriend that she had to make a big escape because she couldn’t risk Omelia seeing her there. However, she lost consciousness, and her life was on the line. Yikes. Betty’s boyfriend told Link that Betty worried that nobody would love her after her multitude of mistakes. Betty had aortic dissection, and Amelia’s face dropped the moment she laid eyes on the youngster. Bailey had to lay down the law because Betty’s parents were at the hospital, leading Amelia to question her future. “Where would you go,” she asked Link, “if you just gave it all up? When it all seems hopeless, what’s your secret fantasy escape hatch?” Link said Barbados was his top pick. Teddy scrubbed in to help save Betty’s life, and her reasoning was fantastic. “Amelia may never see that little girl open her eyes again,” Teddy said. “Let me be the surgeon to tell her that we lost her.” Betty was mostly touch and go, but she was saved at the eleventh hour. However, Linus died, and Link struggled to process it and confided in Amelia who agreed with him. “He was a good kid,” Amelia said. “I have to call his parents.” Elsewhere on this wild episode: – Meredith was happy, and for good reason: She performed the hospital’s longest surgery and aced it with flying colors. – Levi and Nico had breakfast, but Nico decided to work through it. But there was no argument, it brought them closer together. The only issue was that Link did not want Levi in the O.R. because he was not ready. – Jackson wanted Maggie to go camping with him, but Maggie said no because she had to stay at the hospital because of Betty’s arrival. Last month, Empire star Jussie Smollett reported to police that he had been the victim of a brutal hate crime. Now, Jussie has been arrested after police say that he concocted the whole thing and paid off two brothers to help stage the attack. His castmates are pissed — and some of them don’t ever want to work with him again. TMZ reports that several of Jussie Smollett’s castmates on Empire want him written off the show. Not eventually — right now. According to TMZ ‘s sources, a number of members of the cast feel that he betrayed everyone’s trust. They are also concerned that he may have done irreparable harm to the reputation of the show. Sources say that the stars are “f–king furious” and that if Jussie isn’t fired, he should quit in disgrace. Everyone had his back after the reports that he suffered a horrific hate crime. In the aftermath of police saying that Jussie staged it all, people are understandably angry and embarrassed. (If what police say is true, Jussie didn’t even bother to cover his tracks very well — paying his assailants by check, of all things) Even so, TMZ is sure to note that not everyone is on the same page. Some on the show simply cannot fathom Jussie staging such a heinous crime, or understand what his motive might be. They believe his claim that he is innocent. Disagreements over how to handle this very complicated, very emotionally charged situation. Even if the scandal doesn’t cause the show to take a hit in ratings, it sounds like the culture on the set is tense. TMZ also reports that, on Thursday, Jussie arrived on set and apologized to everyone. At the same time, however, he has doubled down on his insistence that he is innocent. “I’m sorry I’ve put you all through this and not answered any calls,” Jussie told his castmates. “I wanted to say I’m sorry and, you know me, I would never do this to any of you,” he insisted. “You are my family,” he affirmed. “I swear to God, I did not do this.” Jussie was surrounded by family at the time of that statement on the set. He had to leave the set because he had obviously been crying, but returned to resume filming. It is also reported that he changed his phone number because he was receiving so many furious messages from cast members. The only coworkers who have it now are the people who believe and support him. We guess that Jussie doesn’t need to keep his old number. At his bail hearing, Jussie was instructed to have no contact with the Osundairo brothers. We have to ask: How does one lower the reputation of a TV series that stars accused domestic abuser Terrence Howard? (For the record, he admitted to at least one incident during a 2015 interview) Does the bar get any lower than that for a TV series? That’s a complicated moral question. But the recent news about Jussie has made things complicated for many people. Hate crimes against LGBTQ+ Americans happen all too often — they’re just usually not inflicted upon celebrities. People of color make up over 60% of the victims of these attacks. If Jussie faked his own attack, that hoax will be used by political opportunists as a weapon against real survivors of real hate crimes. This week’s actual hate crime news was about a member of the Coast Guard. The man was an avowed white nationalist. He was trained in combat and was stockpiling weapons. He had made a hit list for journalists and Democratic politicians whom he intended to kill in a massive attack that he was planning. That man was an existential threat to America. Instead, the news cycle has been dominated in part by Jussie Smollett.
