The Rewind: We Checked Out ‘Robin Hood’ And Let You Know Whether You Should Too

See original here:

Source: Global Grind / Global Grind Another episode of The Rewind is here and we are more than happy to give you your much-needed dose of recap reality. Every week we revisit some of the pop culture trends, movies, viral moments and music from the week before and give our hot takes. Our experts Landon Lavarius and DJ Franchise share their opinions, sprinkle in some facts and then when it’s all over and done with, provide a rating of 1 to 10. We listen to the songs, watch the movies, scour the internet, and do the hard work so you don’t have to. On today’s episode, we’re getting into the new Robin Hood film. Unless you’ve lived under a rock your entire life, you probably know the story of Robin Hood pretty well. He was a well-meaning thief that robbed the rich to give to the poor. There have been a ton of movies based on the story of Robin Hood but this particular one came out on November 21, 2018 and stars Taron Egerton, Jamie Foxx, Ben Mendelsohn and others. It was produced by  Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Davisson Killoran, and Basil Iwanyk. The story is a classic and other Robin Hood movies (and cartoons) have seemingly been received well. However, this one? Not so much. Rotten Tomatoes gave it a 16% on the Tomatometer and with a production budget of $100 million, the film only brought in a total gross of $25.9 million worldwide. To say it flopped would be an understatement. The new Robin Hood was a box office bomb. But was it really bad or was it overshadowed by the release of Creed II, which did amazing in the box office? DJ Franchise and Landon Levarius give their take. We also break down last week’s rap battle between Joyner Lucas and Tory Lanez. The two exchanged some friendly fire after Tory Lanez got a little cocky on Instagram Live and said that Joyner Lucas couldn’t see him lyrically. Joyner challenged him to a bar for bar battle that resulted in several diss tracks between the two. It’s cool though, they are both still fans of one another and did it all for the love of hip hop. Did you get to listen for yourself? DJ Franchise and Landon Levarius give us a break down, and of course a rating, of the freestyles on today’s episode of The Rewind . Watch the full episode at the top of the page and let us know how you feel!

James Karen, Actor You Know From Everything, Dies at 94

James Karen, a veteran actor with an extensive big screen resume, passed away this week at his home in Florida, according to multuple outlets. He was 94 years old. Karen died with over 200 movies to his credit, but he’s probably best known for his role as the developer Mr. Teague in the modern horror classic Poltergeist. The long-time star also appeared in Return of the Living Dead, Invaders from Mars, China Syndrome, and Wall Street — among MANY other films. One of the best known character actors of all-time, Karen once joked that nobody knew his name, yet everybody knew his face because he “did so much damn work.” Actually, he may not have been joking about that. Mostly known for his work in the movie world, Karen also played a key part on the finale of Little House on the Prairie and he worked with director Oliver Stone on three occasions: 1. As Lynch, the office manager at Jackson Steinem, where Charlie Sheen’s stockbroker character works, in Wall Street. 2. As Secretary of State William Rogers in Nixon. 2. As a Miami Sharks executive in Any Given Sunday. Karen was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania and served in the United States Air Force during World War II. Following a stint on Broadway, Karen moved to the land of television when he starred as Dr. Burke on As the World Turns and was the original Lincoln Tyler on All My Children. Along with starring in thousands of commercials, Karen also worked as the TV and radio spokesman (“Why pay more?”) for Pathmark, an East Coast supermarket chain that was liquidated in 2015. On the personal front: Karen was married to the late Susan Reed, the beloved folk singer and zither player, from 1958 until their divorce in 1967. The couple shared a son named Reed, whose godfather is the legendary Buster Keaton, a very close friend of Karen’s throughout his adult life. In the horror genre, other notable movies in which Karen played a part include: Frankenstein Meets the Space Monster, Poltergeist, Invaders from Mars, The Willies, The Unborn, Piranha, Apt Pupil and Mulholland Drive. And other television roles include: Seinfeld, The Larry Sanders Show, Dallas, The Golden Girls, L.A. Law, Murphy Brown and The Waltons. In the cult classic The Return of the Living Dead, Karen starred as the manager of a medical warehouse who inadvertently releases a gas that re-animates the dead. He said it was the most fun he ever had in making a movie, saying in 2006 that he had some say in how the character died: “It was the deal where he figures out he’s becoming a zombie and decides to incinerate himself in the crematorium. “He kisses his wedding ring as he goes in. It was a very emotional scene, but it also got me out of being one of the rain-drenched zombies milling around outside the place at the end of the film. “I didn’t really want to do all that muddy stuff.” The Hollywood Reporter first confirmed Karen’s death. May he rest in peace. View Slideshow: Celebrities Who Died in 2018: In Memoriam

White Supremacists Release Anti-Andrew Gillum Robocall Featuring Monkey Sounds

More:

A representative for Andrew Gillum  spoke out Tuesday against a White supremacist website’s racist robocall referring to the candidate as a “negro” and “monkey.” RELATED:  5 Takeaways From Andrew Gillum’s Masterful Debate Dismantling Of Ron DeSantis “These disgusting, abhorrent robocalls represent a continuation of the ugliest, most divisive campaign in Florida’s history,” Geoff Burgan told  The Huffington Post  after Gillum’s acclaimed performance during Sunday night’s debate . “We would hope that these calls, and the dangerous people who are behind them, are not given anymore attention than they already have been.” An actor, presumably hired or associated with the Neo-Nazi website The Road To Power, pretended to be Florida’s Democratic gubernatorial candidate during the call. The actor spoke in an exaggerated stereotypical Black southern voice over music from the minstrel era and “Amos ‘n’ Andy,” a TV sitcom that perpetuated several racist tropes about Black people in the 1950s. The person is heard saying, “Well hello there. I is the Negro Andrew Gillum, and I be asking you to make me governor of this here state of Florida.” A screeching monkey sound is also heard on the horrific robocall, which circulated on Tuesday. The robocall refers to Andrew Gillum as a “negro” and a “monkey.” https://t.co/T1Opyvc1nw — NBCBLK (@NBCBLK) October 23, 2018 The ad veers into more terrible territory when the actor describes Gillum’s health care plan as “quite cheap” because “he’ll just give chicken feet to people as medicine.” The call also mentions that Jewish voters will support Gillum because Jews are “the ones that been putting Negroes in charge over the white folk, just like they done after the Civil War.” After the call ends, a disclaimer points out that The Road To Power website and podcast’s name is responsible for the ad. The Idaho-based group has a history of making racist robocalls, including those previously made against Gillum in August as well as in several other states such as Oregon and Virginia. As to whether Ron DeSantis has anything to do with the racist robocall, his camp fiercely denied any connection and denounced the ad in a statement. DeSantis, however, had blown a racist dog whistle with his comment advising Florida voters not to “ monkey up ” the election by voting for Gillum. Juliette Lewis Naked Goddess Bush of the Day

I am a fan of Juliette Lewis. She’s from my era of getting into the movies. From Christmas Vacation, to Cape Fear, to Kalifornia, to Natural Born Killers, to Edward Scissor Hands, no wait that was Winona, this one was in Gilbert Grape, to every single movie she’s ever done…Mixed Nuts, Strange Days, Basketball Diaries…fuck I am turning into IMDB… She’s pretty much legend status… Apparently, she’s in this new HBO show by the cunt Lena Dunham, because they keep giving their regulars work, and it’s called Camping, where people go Camping and I guess skinny dip, showing off bush, while I love bush and celebrate all bush…because bush is great and so is this 45 year old’s bush….better than Lena Dunham’s that I am surprised she didn’t write into the script even though she’s not starring in this show…she’s just writing it, you’d just assume she’d be in a bear costume in the woods outside the campground farting with her ass spread as you know she does… But this isn’t about Lena Dunham, if anything we all need to thank her for writing this nude scene with Juliette Lewis in….we like it. Blac Chyna: Yup, I’d Get Back Together with Rob Kardashian!

Blac Chyna has been through a lot with Rob Kardashian. They have a child together. They were engaged for a brief period of time. They starred on a reality TV show together. He posted revenge porn-type photos of her on the Internet . You know, the usual ups and downs of most couples. By this point, if you’re reading this website, we’re guessing you’re quite familiar with the sordid history between the Instagram model and the sock mogul. But did you know that Chyna would be down with repeating it? Or somehow thinking it might change for some reason? In other words: She wants to get back together with her one-time fiance and baby daddy! At the very very least, she’s open to this possibility. Asked in an interview with DailyMailTV if she would reconcile romantically with Rob, Chyna didn’t rule it out. “Maybe, but we’ll see,” the 30-year old replied simply and surprisingly. It’s clear these two have a strong connection, but it’s also clear that connection has led to a handful of extremely uglu arguments and confrontations. This tension culminated in July of 2017 after Rob released several lewd photos of his ex and nearly got arrested for doing so without her permission. In Chya’s defense, however, she never threatened to keep Rob from their daughter, Dream, during the fallout from this scandal As understandably mad as she was at Rob, she never used their child as a pawn. This actually sort of says a lot about her. The stars dated on and off from January to December 2016 and much of their relationship was documented on their E! docuseries, Rob & Chyna. Nearly every episode centered on some giant fight between the couple, but Chyna says now that she doesn’t regret anything about the program. “I wouldn’t change nothing with Rob & Chyna at all ‘cause that was our reality,” she told DailyMailTV, adding: “The good, the bad and whatever else. I feel like a lot of people misconstrue the whole situation. There’s no way I could have a beautiful baby girl as super-smart as Dream. “You can look into her face and just tell she was made with love. She’s, like, perfect.” Make fun of Chyna all you want (Lord knows that we have), but that is an exceptionally grounded and mature way to look at things. The former stripper, of course, is also the mother of five-year-old son King with ex Tyga, whom she dated from 2011 to 2014. She says that being a parent has changed her for the better: “Before, it was all about me. I was kind of, like, really selfish. “But now I have these two little ones, so I have to be more cautious, more aware and more attentive of these little people I created. It’s so different.” In closing, Chyna said she doesn’t want to “jinx” anything, but that another starring reality show turn may be in the works. Probably not opposite Rob, however. That said, the former lovers have found a way to parent in peace and to not tear each other into pieces online or in person. “Chyna and Rob are coparenting a lot better than anyone thought they would,” a source told Us Weekly in May. “They’re getting along. Everything is fine.” Who ever would have thought that was possible?!? View Slideshow: Blac Chyna: Awful at Oral Sex According to Leaked Video, Twitter Reactions

Bill Cosby: Hit in Face By Airborne Chicken Sandwich in Jail Cafeteria

Bill Cosby is two weeks into his three-to-ten year sentence and has started to really get a look at his life behind bars . His larger-than-life personality is reportedly not meshing well with his fellow inmates. A new report says that one prisoner got so fed up with him that he chucked the chicken patty from his sandwich at him, striking Cosby in the face. RadarOnline reports that Cosby was on the receiving end of a projectile patty of the chicken variety. “Mr. Cosby cracked a joke to another inmate by the infirmary,” their insider reports. The source continues: “and that inmate was mad enough to take his chicken out of the bun and plunge it at him.” The report notes that prison food isn’t exactly served in a buffet, so there must have been a great deal of ire behind the move. “The way I see it,” the insider says. “You have to be very angry to throw your meal in jail because I don’t think you get seconds.” We would imagine not. (Disclaimer: these chicken patties are probably a lot nicer than the institutional chicken disk that allegedly struck the disgraced comedian) The alleged incident comes on the heels of a report that said that Cosby was enjoying the chicken patty. “Mr. Cosby told us last week that the chicken patty was the best meal he had so far at SCI Phoenix … so that says a lot,” the source notes. We already mentioned a report that Cosby has earned a nickname and some undeserved respect from fellow inmates. “They’re calling him the ‘OG,'” the insider claimed. “Lingo for ‘original gangster.” Clearly, that respect was not universal. There was another report that said that Cosby tried pudding in prison, and that it was apparently not to his liking. “He told us on the phone over the weekend ‘I was promoting THIS garbage?!’” The source claimed. “It tastes like something you give a lizard!” Cosby was famous in the ’90s as the face of jello and pudding advertisements. “We were caught by surprise,” the insider stated. “We never asked him: ‘Hey, Mr. Cosby, have you ever tried pudding or Jell-O?’” “I never saw him and I don’t think anybody else ever saw him eating pudding or Jell-O,” the source admitted. The insider concluded: “but I was pretty damn shocked when he told us he tried it and it wasn’t what he expected.” Of course, a conflicting report casts into doubt everything that we’ve heard. TMZ spoke to someone at the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections. “This did NOT happen,” their insider said forcefully of the chicken patty incident. “And,” the source continued. “I am unhappy with anyone who is reporting such fake news.” What’s more is that Cosby has allegedly had no contact whatsoever with fellow inmates while he is evaluated by prison staff. Cosby is two weeks in and, no matter whose report you believe, it seems safe to say that he’s no longer living his best life. He wants out of prison — and we’re not referring to the goofy claim that Cosby is planning an elaborate prison break . No, we mean that his legal team is fighting in court. They are appealing, trying to throw out his sentence, his conviction, and even the judge . We wouldn’t hold our breath. His wife, Camille Cosby, is said to be demanding that the judge be investigated. It would be a surprise if her efforts bear fruit. Cosby has been sentenced to prison, and he may even spend the rest of his life behind bars. But his conviction for the drugging and sexual assault of Andrea Constand is just a drop in the bucket considering that 60 women came forward to accuse him of similar crimes. Though some of these survivors may feel vindicated that he is behind bars, very few if any of them will also get their day in court. Some waited “too long” to report for the legal system to accept. Others are unable to corroborate. Many feel that Cosby’s incarceration is a victory — but a hollow one. Perhaps the story, true or not, of the chicken patty incident will bring a smile to a few faces. That’s worth something, at least. View Slideshow: Bill Cosby: A Look at His Life Behind Bars

Mom Busted for Smuggling Booze Into Theater in Young Son’s Sippy Cup

Not every mother is going to be Mom of the Year, but this one isn't even especially good at being a bad mom. A woman in Cobb County was arrested after getting drunk at a movie theater after sneaking in an alcoholic beverage … in her 5-year-old's sippy cup. To make matters worse, her 5-year-old child was with her at the time. Kristina Gibson is now facing misdemeanor reckless conduct and public intoxication charges following an incident on a Friday afternoon. According to an arrest warrant, “Gibson filled her 5-year-old son's sippy cup with a strong alcoholic beverage.” Judging by the fact that she got so very intoxicated, it almost sounds like she was drinking straight liquor, but that is just speculation. The warrant continues: “and became intoxicated in the theater.” It is also believed that she may have taken a central nervous system depressant at the same time — which may have interacted with the alcohol. The Friday incident took place at the Merchants Walk Stadium Cinemas in Cobb County. She allegedly used her son's sippy cup to smuggle in the alcoholic beverage, but there is thankfully no indication that her son had any of it. The warrant accuses Gibson of becoming “unable to walk, talk, or care” for him. Her son's cries then alerted moviegoers, who notified theater employees who then contacted police. Thankfully, the staff at the theater prevented Gibson from entering her car to drive away with her son. It sounds like that could have been catastrophic. When police arrived, an officer tried to zip Gibson's purse, presumably to prevent its contents from spilling. This is when Gibson allegedly told the officer “I will (expletive) kill you.” Don't do that, folks. Gibson was not immediately arrested, but was instead taken to the hospital by police, who were concerned about her level of intoxication. Only after she arrived at the hospital and was no longer perceived to be a threat to anyone was the arrest warrant filed. A family friend picked up her 5-year-old son from the theater. Gibson remained in the hospital for nearly a week before being released. At that point, she was arrested and booked in Cobb County Jail. She was released on bail for $1,000. It is still unclear if she actually took the drugs described as prescription central nervous system depressants. That sounds to us like a benzodiazepine — which, as we all know, can become dangerous when combined with alcohol. That would explain how someone (especially someone who may be an experienced drinker) could become intoxicated on a sippy cup's worth of alcohol. As one fellow moviegoer put it: “We go to the movies to have a good time! But … that's not the way to do it.” The issue here is not with a woman finding a creative way to smuggle alcohol into a theater, but endangering her son and potentially other drivers in the process. Though … we should point out that a sippy cup is a terrible way to smuggle in a drink. Like, flasks exist. Even if this is one of those creepy theaters where they search people's bags, there had to be a way for her to indulge herself without involving her son. It really sounds like this woman was not thinking straight.

Dancing with the Stars Recap: Who the Eff is Voting for Joe?!

“Most Memorable Year” night on Dancing with the Stars gave us a lot of heartwarming stories, some great dancing, and some terrible dancing.  Oh yes, Grocery Store Joe is still terrible, but did he manage to show signs of improvement? Let’s break down the latest installment, shall we? Mary Lou Retton and Sasha Farber This compatible duo went with the Viennese Waltz to “We Are the Champions” performed by Ray Chew Live. Mary went with 1984 as her most memorable year.  That was the year she won the Olympic gold, so it was a predictable year for her to pick. But she did open up about her win not being all that solid in the lead up to it.  She had knee surgery which could have rendered her unfit to compete in the Olympics.  Her latest routine with Sasha was another solid one that allowed them to scale new heights.  Judges’ Score: 24/30 Milo Manheim and Witney Carson Milo went with 2018 as his most memorable year, and this could be attributed to him being just 17 years old. We dare say that most viewers had no clue who he was prior to his casting, so maybe he had a point.  Milo and Witney both went with another energetic performance that ticked all the boxes as far as the judges’ scores go. It was a Jive to “Can You Do This?” by Aloe Blacc.  Judges’ Scores: 27/30. Nancy McKeon and Val Chmerkovskiy It was time to dance the Rumba for this couple. Nancy went with 2006 as her most memorable year because she felt that was the year of her family.  The duo performed to “Love Someone” performed live by Lukas Graham. As has been the case for Nancy this season, there’s improvement, but she’s still nowhere near where she needs to be.  Judges’ Score: 22/30 Alexis Ren and Alan Bersten The Instagram star and the pro went with a Contemporary performance of “How to Save a Life” performed by Ray Chew Live. They danced a tribute to Alexis’ late mother who passed in 2014.  As always, it was a robust performance with Alexis showing off how flexible she is and the scores reflected it.  Judges’ Score: 26/30 Evanna Lynch and Keo Motsepe Evanna went with 2006 as her year of choice. That was the year she landed the role of Luna Lovegood in the Harry Potter movies.  To celebrate this, she performed the Viennese Waltz to “Hedwig’s Theme” by John Williams. Evanna admitted that she had a connection to the movies through the books.  She was offered a role in the movies after becoming penpals with J.K. Rowling while suffering from an eating disorder.  This performance showed just how much she has grown as a dancer, and she has a lot left to give.  Judges’ Score: 27/30 Joe Amabile and Jenna Johnson Joe went with 2018 because he said it was going to be the year he wins Dancing with the Stars!  We’re kidding, of course. He did choose 2018 but said it was because he realized he could fall in love.  His Viennese Waltz to “You Are the Reason” performed live by Calum Scott, and Leona Lewis did not help him much in the scores.  He was all over the place. Who the heck is voting for him? Judges’ Score: 18/30 Juan Pablo Di Pace and Cheryl Burke Juan Pablo went with the year 1999, opening up about it being the year he hot-footed it out of Buenos Aires in order to pursue his dreams of being an entertainer in Los Angeles.  We think it’s fair to say he accomplished his goal! His performance of the Samba to “Ni Ty Ni Yo” by Jennifer Lopez was visually stunning. He and Cheryl upped their game in a big way and got a perfect score in the process.  Judges’ Score: 30/30 John Schneider and Emma Slater John has been rather wooden since his debut on the series, but he’s showing some improvement. He went with the Waltz to “Smile” by Ray Chew Live.  His year of choice was 2016 because that was the year he lost his mother. The performance was lacking, but the judges recognized that he was getting better.  Judges’ Score: 21/30 Bobby Bones and Sharna Burgess Another week, another Greatest Showman number. Bobby went with a Contemporary routine to “A Million Dreams” from the box office smash.  In doing so, he chose 1998 as the year for him because he graduated high school while dreaming of having a better life.  Judges Score: 23/30 Tinashe and Brandon Armstrong Tinashe went with the year 2014 because that was the year her first album was released and gave her the success she was looking for.  Her Rumba to “2 On” by none other than herself gave her and Brandon some more time to shine. They have a lot of chemistry, and it shows in their performances.  Judges’ Score: 27/30 DeMarcus Ware and Lindsay Arnold It was Argentine Tango time for DeMarcus and Lindsay. The duo danced to “Lux Aeterna” by Clint Mansell & Kronos Quarter.  But they went with the year 2016 aka the year DeMarcus winning the Super Bowl. Their performance was tight and filled with big set pieces.  Judges’ Score: 26/30 In the end, it was Nancy and Val and Tinashe and Brandon in jeopardy. Nancy and Val lost their place in the race for the mirrorball trophy.  It’s bizarre that some of the others are still in the competition, but the show is becoming more like a popularity contest these days.  What are your thoughts on the latest elimination? Dancing with the Stars continues Monday on ABC. View Slideshow: Dancing with the Stars: The Odds are Out! Who Will Win?

Zendaya: Everyone Should Feel Represented When They Go To The Movies

The rest is here:

Source: Axelle/Bauer-Griffin / Getty Zendaya Coleman may play a yeti in her latest role, but she relates to her character more than you think. “She’s very bright and has this truth in her. It’s this sense of confidence and she knows what she feels is right in her heart,” says Zenaya. All of which can easily be said about the Hollywood starlet. Zendaya’s role in Smallfoot , is that of the young yeti, Meechee, who finds herself questioning the status quo. “This whole movie is about asking. So that’s what I try to do is just ask questions and don’t think I’m exempt from being wrong because I can always be wrong. I can always make the wrong decisions. I’m not perfect, but I try my best to learn. And again, like you said, hold myself accountable.” Zendaya boasts about the voice of her co-star Common, who lends his vocal prowess to the Stonekeeper. LeBron James, Channing Tatum, Yara Shahidi, James Coredon and Danny Devito also star in the kid’s flick. “[Meechee] knows what she feels is right in her heart and she’s really doing anything to prove that. She happens to be the Stonekeepers daughter, played by Common, who’s the perfect, authoritative, regal voice.” At 22-years-old, Zendaya knows a thing or two about “voice.”  She is well-respected among her Hollywood peers and fans who adore her candor, style and bold stances where other celebrities may remain silent. “I try to do things for the right reasons. I’m never doing anything for people’s opinions or if it’s not sitting right,” she says. “If it doesn’t feel right to me, then that’s when I know something’s wrong. I’m not afraid to admit when I don’t know something.” The former Disney star’s fan base is comprised of young women. “I’m lucky to have people look up to me in that way. I try to do my best to inspire other people to do their best.” Zendaya’s star continues to rise, but her family keeps her humble. “They have absolutely no problem telling me about myself and [they] keep me grounded. They create this barrier and if they’re like my protection group, you know, which is really great to have so that I’m lucky to have.” Zendaya makes an effort to encourage change in the industry by refusing to take certain roles and constantly speaking up for all people of color when it comes to representation in media. “We obviously have a lot further to go with our representation of people in media, whether that be black women, or any in any person of color really. We all want to get to a point where everybody feels represented and feels like they can go to the movies and see themselves on the screen.” As for what Zendaya has coming up, it is rumored she will be starring as the Little Mermaid in the live-action adaptation of the Disney classic. While she made it clear, those are just rumors, she said she would love the honor to play Arielle. “I mean, why not? I loved that movie growing up. Those are my favorites. We would love to see it happen. If it happens. It’s a great thing if it doesn’t instill a great thing.” Catch Zendaya in Smallfoot when it hits theaters on September 28.
