Jon Favreau Out as Iron Man 3 Director

OK, not a huge surprise considering a lot of Favreau’s recent comments about the state of Marvel Studios, but it’s still sad to read reports that Jon Favreau has decided not to direct the third chapter of the Iron Man saga. Favreau recently told MTV, “This whole world … I have no idea what it is. I don’t think they do either, from conversations I’ve had with those guys.” So, yeah. That doesn’t sound like a guy itching to sign on for another go around. (His rep did not immediately return Moveline’s requests for comment; Deadline drew confirmation for Robert Downey Jr.’s side.) But look on the bright side: This totally creates an opening for Mike Leigh . [ Vulture ]

Dueling Montages: Was 2010 Better for Films or Viral Videos?

Year-end lists are great ! But as we’ve learned in the past few years, they aren’t enough for this tech-savy age. No, we need end of year video montages too. Extremely comprehensive end-of-year-montages. Well, two particularly well-edited ones have just popped up; one counting down the top 100 viral videos of the year and one just paying homage to the avalanche of movies, good and bad, that crashed down on us during 2010. So join me for a trip down memory lane and try to decide whether the year’s best entertainment was delivered in a movie theater or on cell phones and laptops.

Help Movieline Caption These Pictures of Oprah Winfrey and Russell Crowe Sailing in Australia

Now that she’s seen — and reportedly eradicated — Australia’s famous golliwog “washerwoman” dolls, what else could Oprah Winfrey do during her victory tour of Australia besides go sailing with Russell Crowe? The strange friendfellows took their Oprah-adorned sailboat (!) around Sydney Harbour over the weekend with some of Lady O’s biggest fans. Naturally, there are photos. Ahead, help Movieline caption the latest bit of Oprahype.

Get to Know the Characters of True Grit with 4 New Clips

These four clips from the Coen Brothers’ True Grit are a welcome departure from the numerous “advanced clips” these days, which often turn out to be variations on scenes that played out more economically in the trailer. Here, we get a nice sense of the style of the movie as well as an engaging introduction to each of the major characters. My personal favorite is the first argument between Matt Damon and Jeff Bridges, which honestly doesn’t do much to back up the Coens’ claim that the film is departure in tone . But that’s not necessarily a bad thing…

Gwyneth Paltrow Has 99 Ring Tones But A Bitch Ain’t One

At the junket today for Country Strong (or, as I prefer to think of it, Lady Crazy Heart ), Gwyneth Paltrow’s cell phone went off. The ring tone? “Dirt Off Your Shoulder.” “Y’know, by Jay-Z,” Ms. Paltrow helpfully reminded the crowd. Just color me surprised that she didn’t refer to him as James-Zed. [ @Nedrick ]

Carrie Fisher Outed John Travolta. Good.

About a year ago, Carrie Fisher off-handedly outed John Travolta in an interview with the Advocate and recently circled back around in the same publication to underscore what already is an open secret: John Travolta is gay. And frankly it’s about damn time someone said it so blatantly.

Narnia Studio Chief: If Dawn Treader Fails, Franchise is Dead

Success is subjective in Hollywood, especially with franchises. But with his Chronicles of Narnia franchise on now on its second distributor in three films, Walden Media president Michael Flaherty confessed he’s all in with this weekend’s Voyage of the Dawn Treader . At least he’s got a sense of humor about it: “There have been a number of cheesy nautical references throughout the production of VDT, but we truly are sunk in making any more films from the Chronicles if this one falls short of expectations.” Also: No , Aslan isn’t a Buddha or Mohammed figure . As you were. [ Big Hollywood ]
