Chelsea Handler To Host The 2010 MTV Video Music Awards

VMAs air live from Los Angeles on Sunday, September 12, at 9 p.m. ET. By James Montgomery Chelsea Handler Photo: Getty Images The censors have been put on high alert, and the celebs have been given fair warning: Sardonic and sass-tacular comedian Chelsea Handler has been tapped to host the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards — airing live from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 12, at 9 p.m. ET — and things are probably gonna get a little raw. Handler — best known for her exploits on the outrageous late-night talk show “Chelsea Lately” and her three best-selling, brutally honest (and brutally funny) books — won’t pull any punches on VMA night. She’ll also be making a little history, becoming only the second woman to fly solo as VMA host and the first since 1994, back when Roseanne Barr lorded over the proceedings. She’ll join a rapidly growing roster of performers (including Kanye West , Florence and the Machine , B.o.B and Justin Bieber ) and presenters (Ke$ha, Nicki Minaj, Ashley Greene and Ne-Yo) for the big show. And more names are being added daily. While the stage will be overflowing with stars, the actual winners of the VMAs will be determined by you. Taylor Swift Tapes Thank-You Message For ‘Mine’ Success

Country/pop star ties a Billboard record with single’s #3 debut. By James Dinh Taylor Swift Photo: Stephen Lovekin/Getty Images It’s only been a week since Taylor Swift’s “Mine” hit radio , but the lead single from her new album, Speak Now, is already making a splash on the upcoming Billboard Hot 100 with a #3 debut. According to Billboard, “Mine” makes chart history since Swift is only the second female artist in the history of the Hot 100 chart to debut multiple songs (“Mine” and “Today Was a Fairy Tale”) in the top five during a one-year time frame. Mariah Carey also accomplished this feat with her hits “Fantasy” and “One Sweet Day” in 1995. While “Mine” wasn’t able to dethrone Eminem and Rihanna’s “Love the Way You Lie” from the #1 spot, she is on top of the Hot Digital Songs chart with 297,000 in downloads. Swift recorded a video message thanking country radio for all the support, saying, “Konnichiwa! I just wanted to say hi to everybody, all my friends on country radio. I’m about to play for 45,000 people in Japan. Wish me luck. Thank you for the first week. I love you.” Fans will get their first glimpse of Swift performing “Mine” during a pre-recorded performance on the upcoming TV special “CMA Music Festival: Country’s Night to Rock,” which airs September 1. Swift’s highly anticipated new album is set to hit stores October 25. Are you excited to see Taylor’s upcoming performances and video for “Mine”? Share your thoughts below! Happy Birthday, Octomom!

Nadya Denise Doud-Suleman Gutierrez, better known as just Nadya Suleman, or just the drain on society we call Octomom, is 35 today. Happy birthday, we guess! The California lady gave birth to octuplets in January 2009, only the second full set to be born alive in the United States. Oh, and she had six children prior to that. And no job, and no partner. No wonder she’s living hand-to-mouth . Free advice to all you unemployed single ladies out there – think twice before having 14 children via IVF. You’re welcome. So congratulations, Nads, on one more year of bilking taxpayers! Many happy returns! Click to enlarge some gems from our gallery of Nadya Suleman pictures :

In Memoriam: American Idol’s Casey James

I’m sad. Sure. But I also want to hold up my old Illinois driver’s license with Norma Rae grit and proclaim, “Take that, American South!” For only the second time in American Idol ‘s history, its Final Two has no connections to the dusty south. That’s not good or bad, but it’s a welcome change of pace. (No offense to Kris Allen — I voted for you, tender dawg!) Now, to attend to the business at hand: Our deceased pony Casey James enjoyed a resilient run, establishing himself as season nine’s resident dark horse . His proudest moments involved simple ballads, sincerity, and keeping his shirt on. Let’s reflect on the Cool, Texas, native’s curvy, paisley-print journey on American Idol and guess what might’ve been had he made the finale.

‘Me & Bobby McGee’: The Story Behind Crystal Bowersox’s Cover

On ‘American Idol,’ Bowersox earned big praise for singing Janis Joplin’s posthumous hit. By Kyle Anderson Once again, one of the highlights of Tuesday night’s episode of “American Idol” — which was focused on songs that had hit No. 1 on the pop charts — was Crystal Bowersox’s performance. Armed with her trusty guitar and her disarming voice, the rocker sang “Me and Bobby McGee,” which reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in 1971. There’s a bittersweet feeling within the lyrics of “Bobby,” as well as in the story surrounding it. The song was written by country legends Kris Kristofferson (who has had a string of hits himself) and Fred Foster (who produced much of Roy Orbison’s best work and helped introduce the world to Dolly Parton) and was recorded by “King of the Road” singer Roger Miller and Canadian folk king Gordon Lightfoot in 1969 and 1970, respectively. Both of those versions became hits, but neither was as big as the one recorded by Joplin, who was friends and occasional lovers with Kristofferson. The bluesy growler recorded the song without his knowledge for her solo album Pearl, which she cut with the Full Tilt Boogie Band. Pearl came out in February of 1971, four months after Joplin’s October 1970 death from a heroin overdose. “Me and Bobby McGee” was released as a commercial single and hit No. 1 on the Hot 100 during the week of March 20, 1971, making Joplin only the second person in history to top that chart posthumously. Though Joplin’s version remains definitive, “Me and Bobby McGee” has been covered by a number of artists, including country greats Kenny Rogers and Johnny Cash, rock icons the Grateful Dead and Melissa Etheridge, and pop idols Olivia Newton-John and Jennifer Love Hewitt. Pink’s version of the track appears on her “Live in Europe” DVD, and Tori Amos has broken it out in concert. Bowersox’s version marks the first time “Me and Bobby McGee” has appeared on “American Idol,” though songs performed by Joplin have popped up five times before. Nikki McKibbin, Carrie Underwood and Asia’h Epperson are among the “Idol” hopefuls who have performed “Piece of My Heart,” while Allison Iraheta knocked out Joplin’s “Cry Baby” last season. What did you think of Crystal Bowersox’s take on “Me and Bobby McGee”? How does it compare to Janis Joplin’s version? Let us know in the comments!
