‘American Idol’ Castoff Erika Van Pelt ‘Confused’ By Judges’ Advice

‘I’ll be honest, I felt there was a lot of contradiction,’ Van Pelt tells MTV News after her elimination. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Kelly Marino Erika Van Pelt Photo: MTV News To just about anyone who tuned in to this week’s “American Idol,” Erika Van Pelt’s exit was a shocker, to say the very least, especially since her performance of “New York State of Mind” was one of the highlights. But also because, you know, Heejun Han is still on the show . Rather than using her three minutes to goof off, Van Pelt genuinely seemed determine to put her best foot forward on Wednesday night, whether it was listening to “Idol” judges’ previous advice to minimize her onstage movements or taking designer Tommy Hilfiger’s hairstyling tips to heart. Oh, and then she delivered a sultry, soulful version of the Joel classic, all of which seemed to guarantee she’d be safe … for at least another week. But, as it turns out, that wasn’t the case, and on Thursday night’s results show , it was Van Pelt who was sent packing. And immediately after her ouster, let’s just say Van Pelt was still trying to figure out what went wrong — though she’s got a pretty good idea of where to start. “I felt confused every week, I’ll be honest,” she told MTV News. “I felt there was a lot of contradiction, and as an artist and someone who takes their singing very seriously, it’s hard for me to take critique of my work, period, and then when you feel like you sorta have people telling you one thing and then telling you something completely different the week after, it’s hard. “Because constructive criticism to me is something I can go home, work on, fix and come back and say, ‘Here, I fixed it.’ I feel what happened to me in this competition was I would take all the advice, I’d work on things, I’d bring something different to the table, and they’d tell me the complete opposite. It’s been really hard for me, I can admit that.” And to that end, when asked which judge or mentor actually provided her with the best guidance, Van Pelt took a diplomatic pause and then answered rather truthfully: none of them. “This might sound really weird, but I feel like my fellow contestants taught me the most,” she said. “We have this inner-working where we all help each other, we all offer up our advice … it’s all about throwing these ideas out and never telling someone what they should do; it’s about giving them suggestions.” Of course, she did add that, ultimately, her “Idol” exit was of her own doing. “I will never blame anyone for misleading me in any way, shape or form; I’m a grown woman,” she said. And she’s grateful for all the opportunities the show has provided for her, chief among them being that, for a while at least, she doesn’t have to go back to her day job as a wedding DJ. “I don’t think I’ll be doing any DJ’ing for a while,” she laughed. “To be totally honest, I need to sleep!” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.

Happy 48th Birthday, Michelle Obama!

The First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama, turns 48 today. The first-ever African-American First Lady, Michelle doesn’t describe herself in such terms. Instead, she doesn’t hesitate to say that first and foremost, she is Malia and Sasha’s mom, and that before that, she was a wife, lawyer and public servant. Here’s an official White House portrait of Michelle and family: Promoting Service and working with young people has remained a staple of her career and her interest in the White House, exemplified by her Let’s Move campaign to bring together communities in a nationwide effort to tackle childhood obesity. Michelle also co-founded Joining Forces, a nationwide initiative that mobilizes all sectors of society to give our service members and their families the opportunities and support they deserve, and to raise awareness of military families’ unique needs. Regardless of your political views, here’s wishing the First Lady a very happy birthday on this day. Click to enlarge some of our favorite Michelle Obama photos below!

J.R. Martinez’s victory tour brought him to Anderson this week. Since 2003, his life story has been one of triumph over adversity. J.R. Martinez said he embraces the opportunities he has, with his newfound fame, to be an advocate for veterans, and says he will always serve our country. “You can take away my camouflage, you can take away my M16, which is my weapon, but I look at it now… my new weapons are my words and my new uniform is my scars,” he explained. “I’m going to continue to serve in a bigger way.” “I feel this is going to be needed with the talks of pulling our guys out of Iraq and Afghanistan and bringing them home … it’s important for me to be that voice.” After driving over a landmine, he spent the next “two and a half years in and out of the hospital” undergoing the never-ending procedures to restore his person, adding details about the journey of self-discovery he embarked on in his recovery. “It was a tough road at 19 years old, to look at your body and your face, and say, ‘What am I going to do about this now? How am I going to move forward?’” he said. “Thinking you’re completely alone and no one in the world understands or can relate to you, but luckily, I was able to see a side that I can use my second chance at life as an opportunity to help people with their first chance at life.” It’s not often you look at a celebrity and see a true hero among us, but J.R. may be that person. Lindsay Lohan: Thankful For Family, Playboy

This Thanksgiving, Lindsay Lohan is taking the time out to recognize the family, friends, and fans that love her, and the opportunities she still has in life. It’s not quite New Year’s, but she’s already resolved to spend the holidays basking in the support of those close to her and leave her legal woes in the past. “Lindsay is being thankful for her family, her fans and for the great year that lies ahead,” Lohan’s rep, Steve Honig, said today, regarding Linds’ plans. One thing she has to look forward to right away? After Thanksgiving, Lilo will promote her nude Playboy spread, in which she will channel Marilyn Monroe . Her cut from that naked venture? Nearly a million dollars. “Lindsay completed a successful photo shoot for Playboy and will be on the cover of the January / February issue, which hits newsstands in late December.” “The pictorial is absolutely fantastic and very tasteful, and will be accompanied by an interview that will let readers see another side of Lindsay,” Honig said . As opposed to her back side, and her front side, etc., etc. As for Thanksgiving, she’ll be spending it with her mom, Dina, sister Ali and two brothers, but, for obvious reasons, not her derelict of society dad Michael. He’ll be cooling his ass in rehab for the time being. Probably a good thing, since every time he drinks, it seems Kate Major calls 911 (she’s in rehab now too). Lindsay Lohan in Playboy sounds …

Beanie Sigel Says Jay-Z Wouldn’t Let Him Out Of Record Deal

With an offer from 50 Cent on the table, Beans tells ‘Rap Fix Live’ his old pal and onetime boss said, ‘I can’t let you go.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Beanie Sigel on “RapFix Live” Photo: MTV News Beanie Sigel put his entire career in retrospect on Wednesday’s (July 6) “RapFix Live.” Once an intergal part of Jay-Z and Dame Dash’s Roc-A-Fella Records, Beanie Sigel — like most of the label’s roster — was suddenly on the outside looking in once the label split. Not only was Beans left in limbo, but the Philadelphia MC was in the midst of legal troubles at the time. Upon his release from prison in 2005 , Sigel secured a deal with 50 Cent’s G-Unit Records. And according to Beans, all he needed was a release from his Def Jam contract from Jay-Z, who happened to be the label president at that time. “When I first got out of jail, I had a meeting, a situation that was already lined up and set up where I could’ve had [a deal] over there,” Sigel said of an agreement 50 Cent put on the table for him. “He wanted to give me a label, a whole label deal … and a whole lot of money too.” Feeling what he described as a sense of loyalty, Sigel went to meet first with Jay, who hadn’t communicated with the rapper during the year he was locked up. “Coming where I came out from, that situation with Roc-A-Fella, I was like, ‘Let me go holla at my man and see what he got for me before I jump over there.’ ” Sigel said he was hoping that Jay would release him from his Def Jam contract in a move that would free the State Property rapper up to do business with 50. Sigel admitted, however, that while he told Jay he had a pending offer, he didn’t reveal to Jay that it was from G-Unit. “I told him I had to roll. ‘If you can’t make that situation happen for me, I gotta leave. I gotta go,’ ” he recalled telling Jay. “I asked him to just let me go — from Def Jam, not from Roc-A-Fella — because he was the president of Def Jam. ‘I want to leave Def Jam, I’m out. You’re the president, you can push that button. Let me get my release papers.’ ” But Hov didn’t fulfill his old running mate’s request. “I went to Jay like, ‘Let me get this [record deal] situation,’ and he was like, ‘I can’t let you go.’ He was like, ‘No.’ He was like, ‘Nah, let me see what I could do.’ That ‘see what I could do’ turned into another two years.” In the end, Sigel never signed with G-Unit, and by 2009, Beans was launching dis rhymes at Jay after hearing what he interpreted as a subliminal attack against him on Jay’s The Blueprint III album. Despite all that has gone down, Beans reiterated to on “RapFix Live” that he was appreciative of the opportunities Jay-Z and Dame Dash had given him while signed to Roc-A-Fella. Ashley Tisdale and Vanessa Hudgens Lookin’ For Attention of the Day

They’ve joined forces. Two bottom feeders who really understand each other because they are in the same Disney leftover table scraps situation, have finally figured out that two is better than one, and that if they are seen together, people may talk about them, especially if Ugly Tisdale wears a semi see through shirt while the chipmunk Hudgens dresses like a clown, even though we all know her best PR is releasing nude pics of herself at 17…. It’s the logic that has made so many threesomes with two ugly chicks go down, and apparently it works….
