Children’s Museum Celebrating African History And Culture Coming To Baltimore

Go here to read the rest:

A new children’s museum centered on African history and culture is officially coming to Baltimore. According to CBS Baltimore the museum—which is slated to open its doors in the Park Heights neighborhood this summer—will be the first of its kind in the country. “They might not even know that they're learning, but we will introduce ideas and concepts that they could participate in, and thereby learn the history of Africa,” “Mama Kiki” Armstrong said of her aspiring museum. https://t.co/BSkAa0cJUp — WJZ | CBS Baltimore (@wjz) March 11, 2019 Dubbed the Sankofa Children’s Museum, the idea for the cultural institution was conceptualized by Esther “Mama Kiki” Armstrong . Armstrong—who is the owner of a Baltimore-based African-inspired boutique called Sankofa African & World Bazaar—believed that there was a lack of knowledge amongst children about the historical backgrounds of African nations. She thought there needed to be a space where youngsters could learn and embrace their roots and was adamant about bringing it to fruition. Armstrong wanted to create an interactive experience for children where they can learn about nations like Ghana, Kenya, and Zimbabwe through playing musical instruments, trying cuisines that were derived from these countries, and dressing up in traditional garbs. She launched a fundraiser for the museum and is moving forward with the project with the help of generous donors. “This should help them appreciate the culture. We’re not just talking about African-American kids. We’re talking about all the kids in the community,” she told the news outlet. “We have to realize that the history of black America, for instance, does not start with slavery. There is a whole lot of history and a whole lot of civilization before the white men ever set foot in Africa.” She also added that it’s essential to bring an institution like this to Baltimore to combat the negative portrayals of our culture that Black children are inundated with and empower them to have pride in where they come from. Different countries will be highlighted on a rotating basis and she will have experts from embassies contribute to telling the narratives of these nations. Armstrong plans on opening up the museum on June 19 to commemorate Juneteenth. Duggar Women: Are They Working as Midwives … Without Licenses?!

For the most part, Duggar women are very strongly encouraged to eschew careers in favor of devoting their adult years to child-rearing. There is, however, a short list of money-making endeavors that they’re permitted to pursue. At the top of the list is midwife work, which is one of the few professional avenues open to Duggar women. (The other one is flipping cars or otherwise assisting in one of Jim Bob’s many business ventures, but this is only permissible until such time as the woman finds a suitable sperm donor.) So Jill Duggar has continued working as a midwife even after tying the knot with Derick Dillard. Insiders say Jana Duggar recently followed in her sisters’ footsteps and is now delivering babies in and around her native Tontitown, Arkansas. And like Jill, it seems that Jana has yet to obtain the proper licensure. The Duggars have long taken a rather libertarian approach to state and local ordinances. For example, Jim Bob has pissed off his neighbors numerous times by basically ignoring zoning regulations. Of course, delivering babies is a pretty high stakes procedure, so the Duggars’ neighbors are a bit less forgiving of the alleged gaps in Jill and Jana’s training. To be fair, no one is claiming that the women didn’t receive any kind of training at all. It’s just that it appears they went through the sort of un-regulated faith-based program that the Duggars prefer for, well … everything. “This is hands-on apprenticeship style,” Jill once said in reference to her training. “So we are really getting in there and getting to experience what the midwifery and doula roles look like, hands-on.” Jill defenders have frequently pointed to the above photo, which does show Jill proudly displaying a certificate to work as a midwife. But the photo doesn’t tell the whole story. Jill is holding a Certified Professional Midwife’s competency license, which is very different from a Certified Nurse Midwife license, generally considered the standard in her field. So she and Jana might be able to work as midwife’s assistants, but they’re not qualified to perform such work on their own. The situation has attracted a considerable amount of controversy in recent weeks for a number of reasons: 1. Jill’s midwifing mentor, Vanessa Giron, is currently being sued by a mom who claims she nearly died during her deliver. (Sources say Jill was on hand for the delivery.) On top of that, it’s now rumored that several other Duggar daughters are beginning careers as midwives. Needless to say, this situation may not resolve itself as quickly and quietly as the Duggars are hoping. View Slideshow: The Duggars: Abusing Their Own Kids With Twisted “Pearl Method” Parenting

Hailey Baldwin: I’m Fragile, Hurting, and Afraid

Hailey Baldwin has opened up to beg trolls to stop bullying her for marrying Justin Bieber . Now, she has penned another heartfelt post about a personal struggle that most people never saw coming. She is sharing her story in the hopes that it will help other women feel less alone. Hailey Bieber, who until very recently was known as Hailey Baldwin, took to Instagram to share a heartfelt message. “Stepping into 2019,” Hailey begins. “I want to be more open,” “I want to be more open about the things I struggle with,” she elaborates. “And,” Hailey continues, she wants to “be able to be more vulnerable.” “I’m 22 years old,” she reminds her fans and followers. (As a fellow Millennial I cannot imagine being married at 22) “And the truth is,” Hailey writes. “No matter how amazing life may look from the outside, I struggle.” “I’m insecure, I’m fragile, I’m hurting, I have fears, I have doubts, I have anxiety, I get sad, I get angry,” Hailey lists. Being beautiful, rich, famous, beloved, and married doesn’t make you immune to, well, being a person. “I have had more days than I can count where I’ve found myself scrolling through Instagram,” she writes. “Comparing myself, comparing my looks,” Hailey has days when she finds herself “feeling like I’m not good enough.” She admits to sometimes “feeling like I lack so many things and really struggling to be confident in who I am.” Hailey says that all of this is “because I constantly feel like I’m just not good enough.” “Every single day is a confidence battle for me,” Hailey admits. “I’m not writing this for a pity party or for sympathy,” she quickly clarifies. “But just to simply say, I’m a human.” Everyone but a small group of conspiracy theorists of Pizzagate and Flat Earth proportions agrees with her. “I’m a young woman,” Hailey points out. “I’m learning who I am and, it’s REALLY FREAKING HARD.” “It’s hard finding who you are,” she admits. “But what’s even harder,” Hailey continues. “Is being picked apart and compared to other women while trying to do that.” “There are days that I’m simply broken because of it,” Hailey shares. That is heartbreaking. “It would be incredible if other young girls and women could find it in themselves to lift each other up,” she expresses. Hailey would like for other women “to stop making other women who are struggling JUST LIKE THEM, feel incompetent and less than.” “We ALL have flaws, and that will never change,” she writes. What can change, however, is your self esteem, mental health, and how you view yourself. “What I do know is,” Hailey writes. “God made us individuals for a reason, with our own beauty, our own personalities, and our own story.” As you are probably aware, Hailey is a very devout Christian. Her father, Stephen Baldwin, was famously Born Again. “Because there’s a specific plan and purpose for each and every human created,” she continues. “And he makes no mistakes!!” “So this year I’m gonna do my very best to just be ME and be confident with who I am,” Hailey announces. “Cause I am enough,” she affirms. “And I’m loved,” “And you are enough,” Hailey concludes. “And you’re loved.” Hailey really hit this out of the park. A lot of celebrities unfortunately tend to turn posts like this into lengthy complaints about hateful comments that they receive. Some even compare rude comments from haters to genuine bullying that non-famous young people receive from peers. Hailey makes no such false equivalency, and merely points out the cruelty of it in a few posts before making a broader wish for all women. She is such a sweet, thoughtful person, and she deserves peace of mind. We hope that, soon, Hailey will be able to see herself as the rest of us see her — as absolutely gorgeous. The Voice Accused of Racism, Rigging Season 15 Winner

As you may recall from our The Voice finale recap , the Season 15 winner was nothing if not a controversial choice. (Just a head's up: the tweets we've harvested from the internet definitely contain spoilers on that front) The fact that the contestants who had been hitting it out of the park week after week were suddenly falling behind struck viewers as odd. Some suspected a conspiracy — rigging — at the network. Others suspected that racism was responsible. Some thought that it was both. It's clear that Twitter would have chosen a very different winner than The Voice did. And a lot of folks are so upset that they've vowed to never again allow the NBC competition series to darken their screens. 1. The Voice announced its Season 15 winner … Chevel Shepherd, a white teenage yodeler, won. Viewers could not believe their eyes or ears. 2. Even Sunny Hostin couldn’t contain her shock Some would say that this is the most in-touch with Americans that any The View host has been in a while. 3. The results were difficult to miss A lot of people felt that, consciously or unconsciously, The Voice’s winners won because of their race. 4. Others washed their hands of the show A lot of people vowed to stop watching The Voice. We’ll see how many stick to that promise. 5. Did the audience’s votes even count? A lot of reality competitions are “rigged” in that the show will maneuver some contestants to stay longer. It sounds like people think that The Voice is straight-up lying about caring about the audience’s votes, which is another matter entirely. 6. Conspiracy theory or hard truth? Racism is alive and well in America. Did it play a role in handing Chevel an undeserved victory? View Slideshow

‘LHHNYS9’ Recap: Safaree Gets Dragged Into Drama With Jaquae

See the rest here:

Source: Mike Pont / Getty Love and Hip-Hop New York picks up at Maino’s house. Issa cookout! This scene just gets us more familiar with his living situation. He and his girl Maggie have been together for two years. They live together and there’s a lot going on. Maggie has PTSD from the Irving Plaza shooting, where she almost died, and they take care of Maggie’s big brother, who also lives with them. Big bro is a diabetic, in a wheelchair and he’s kinda sorta blind. Again, there’s a lot going on. Meanwhile, Safaree is having a BBQ at the park elsewhere and this sets the stage for Jaquae to admit that he wants Kiyanne back. Kiyanne comes through, of course, and she wants no parts of his attempts to be charming. In fact, she calls him a clout chaser, a cheater (he allegedly cheated on her on her birthday) and they basically end up arguing back and forth. Then Kiyanne says she just wants Safaree to see who Jaquae for who he really is. In other words, he’s two-faced. Kiyanne claims he has been talking smack behind Safaree’s back and that he took credit for that hurricane relief song they did last season. Safaree wants no parts of the drama so Kiyanne gets escorted out, but you already know that Safaree will be dragged into this eventually. Later on, Kiyanne tells Safaree that Jaquae told her that he thinks Safaree faked being robbed for insurance money. The problem with that is, people are actually in jail for that. This is all it takes for Safaree to feel some type of way about Jaquae so that confrontation is coming. Let’s fast forward to that moment. The scene an event that Jacque is having. In other words, another inappropriate place. Anyway, Safaree asks him about his alleged robbery insurance scam comments in front of Kiyanne and Nya Lee. Jaquae claims that he’s so irritated by this type of negativity is brought to his event that he’s not even going to entertain it with a response. Welp, there’s that. But this isn’t over. We know this because now Safaree feels some type of way and says he can’t really get past it. In other news, Yandy has a girls beach day with Maggie, Anais and Juju. The latter two squash their issues, but not before Anais tells Juju that Jonathan has been talking more smack about her than she thought. This doesn’t sit well Juju and now she wants to discuss this with Jonathan. Juju finally gets her chance to have a sit down with Jonathan to settle their score. They try to get past their drama, but they don’t. Jonathan just feels dismissed by Juju when he brings up the podcast betrayal again and Juju doesn’t feel like it was that serious and they just can’t get right. This discussion ends with Juju storming out on him. Finally, the dry episode wraps with Maino trying to get Maggie to overcome her PTSD…without a therapist. Basically, he lied to her and told her he wanted her to go with him to a boxing match at the Barclay’s Center, but he actually takes her back to Irving Plaza, where she was shot. Maino is sweet with her and seems patient, but this isn’t how you get someone over trauma. To Maggie’s credit, she was a trooper. Hopefully, we’ll get to see her talk to a licensed therapist. We’ll do this again next week, hopefully with a more exciting episode. MODEL MONDAY: Cheyenne Maya-Carty Skated Into Her Dreams

Read more from the original source:

Source: Daniel Zuchnik / Getty Agency : Elite Models London Instagram : @chey_maya Claim to Fame : The video of Cheyenne learning that she would be joining Winnie Harlow , Grace Bol, Winnie Harlow, Cindy Bruna, Herieth Paul, Leomie Anderson , and more on stage at this year’s Victoria’s Secret Fashion show caused a huge stir on social media.  Cheyenne Maya-Carty had a plane to catch. Her luggage had gone through security, her new wireless headphones were tucked tightly beneath her curls blasting her favorite playlist full of afrobeats, and her favorite travel blanket was nestled safely in her carryon . She had done what she had set out to do and it was time for her journey to Heathrow, or so she thought. Before she could make her way on the flight her agent called to tell her she couldn’t leave yet because he had just gotten a message…from the people at Victoria’s Secret . Heading home to London would have to wait. She knew she had done the best she could during the extensive casting process but she never thought that her best could land her a real chance at a slot in one of the world’s biggest runway shows. “At first I didn’t believe it,” she told Hello Beautiful in an exclusive interview. “I was actually on my way back to London. My bags went through and I was on my way on the plane and my agent called me like ‘Oh my god! They wanna see you tomorrow. Don’t get on the plane!” Her authenticity resonated with the those in charge of making the call. “I really was just being myself and I wasn’t trying to be like you know somebody else and like those other girls. I thought if they like me they like me if they don’t they don’t I’ll just keep trying,” she said. When she found out she booked the gig  she was completely shocked. “I just didn’t believe it. I didn’t think that I could actually get the show in the first place because there was so many amazing beautiful girls that were sitting next to me in the castings and the call back.” Two weeks away from what she considers “one of the biggest jobs you can ever book as a female model,” she’s still thrilled. “I’m over the moon!” Maya-Carty’s career was full of Cinderella moments way before this romantic comedy style airport interlude. She actually has one of the most unusual scouting stories in the industry. During a summer night roller skating in London’s Victoria Park her agent who she refers to as “like a second dad,” and “my best friend” spotted her beauty while he was enjoying some pints with his friends. Initially he was hesitant thinking that the venue and circumstances were unprofessional but he finally decided it was worth the risk. “It was summer so everyone was drinking in the park and everyone was having a good time so he was a little bit wavy he said you have nice legs and I was like ‘okay um thanks’ and then my dad came over.” Papa Bear wasn’t thrilled with her agent’s choice of compliments and requested to see some credentials before they could discuss his underage daughter taking a turn on the catwalk . “He obviously spoke to my dad about everything because I was a bit young at the time and my dad kind of took over. He was like ‘who are you’ ‘what do you want’ ‘what do you do’. My dad was very concerned. He was like ‘so where’s your business card’. So he’s like digging in his pockets trying to find this business card and he ended up finding one.” Not long after she was signed to one of the world’s top agencies. Her first modeling job was working for Rihanna and while she has worked with some of the biggest names in fashion and beauty she would still love to have a full circle moment with Fenty . “My first paid gig was walking for Rihanna’s first collaboration with River Island. That was amazing because I was only like I think 17 going on 18 so it was a big thing. And I had braces at the time so I was like a baby. That was definitely a highlight of my career .” She’s had a lot of fun in the industry but she’s managed to avoid some of it’s negative aspects by remaining in contact with people who knew her before she was the face of brands like Chanel and Pandora. She said “Your surroundings play a big part in mental health and emotionally as well. If I wasn’t around the people I’m around today I probably wouldn’t be where I am.” That includes her family who has been by her side since that first fateful summer evening on four wheels. “My family they’re really supportive. I have a great boyfriend and he’s also in the industry. It’s been a lot of love . Everyone’s super excited.” She caters to her physical health by cultivating strong habits. She’s committed to remaining hydrated and keeping an active lifestyle. She doesn’t do couch potato. Skating is still one of her favorite forms of exercise. “I’m never really chilling to be honest,” she says. To keep her water from becoming too bland she often tucks some proper English treats into her bag. “I usually have some tea bags. Mint tea, peppermint tea, and green tea , just to keep hydrated because sometimes water can be boring to drink.” She believes in hydration inside and out and she isn’t shy about letting people know she didn’t wake up like this without a bit of effort and Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream . “I put a lot of time and effort into my hair. I’m always trying new things. I put a hair mask in and whenever I have a day off I’m always about letting my skin breathe and putting leave-in conditioner. ” Her current favorite is DevaCurl Melt Into Moisture  ($36.00, DevaCurl.com ). “I use different products for different seasons so in the Winter I might need a little more moisture in my hair and a little less in the summer or you know depending on what climate I’m in. If it’s very humid out I might need something thicker to hold my curls.” While she’s an expert at taking care of her curls unfortunately not everyone she encounters on set is. She said, “I would say it’s getting better” but there were difficulties “definitely at the start skin-wise and hair-wise .” “Now people are less scared of it. Because when I would walk into a shoot a lot of people didn’t like to touch my hair . They were like okay she’s done, and it’s like ‘no there’s still stuff to do, you just probably don’t know what to do with it.” She’s hoping to facilitate change with her own line of hair care products one day.  “I’m looking into more about hair care as well because hair is a big part of this industry. There’s a lot of girls with my hair type that are still struggling day to day keeping it healthy when they’re getting it straightened. They’re having to have it straight one day and then the next day they’re with a different client and they have to have it curly again.  A lot of girls struggle so I would love to have have maybe my own hair care range of treatments for keeping your hair hydrated.” She’s hopeful because “the industry is growing and people are becoming more educated on how to deal with hair and curly hair and black skin tones . I’m definitely seeing the growth in that.” DON’T MISS: MODEL MONDAY: Olivia Burgess Flexes Her Power Through Perseverance MODEL MONDAY: Gabriella Bernard Talks Sexual Assault, Natural Hair, And The Beauty In Speaking Up MODEL MONDAY: Devorah Sings A ‘Story’ Of Determination [ione_media_gallery src=”https://hellobeautiful.com” id=”3015677″ overlay=”true”]

White Supremacists Release Anti-Andrew Gillum Robocall Featuring Monkey Sounds

More:

A representative for Andrew Gillum  spoke out Tuesday against a White supremacist website’s racist robocall referring to the candidate as a “negro” and “monkey.” RELATED:  5 Takeaways From Andrew Gillum’s Masterful Debate Dismantling Of Ron DeSantis “These disgusting, abhorrent robocalls represent a continuation of the ugliest, most divisive campaign in Florida’s history,” Geoff Burgan told  The Huffington Post  after Gillum’s acclaimed performance during Sunday night’s debate . “We would hope that these calls, and the dangerous people who are behind them, are not given anymore attention than they already have been.” An actor, presumably hired or associated with the Neo-Nazi website The Road To Power, pretended to be Florida’s Democratic gubernatorial candidate during the call. The actor spoke in an exaggerated stereotypical Black southern voice over music from the minstrel era and “Amos ‘n’ Andy,” a TV sitcom that perpetuated several racist tropes about Black people in the 1950s. The person is heard saying, “Well hello there. I is the Negro Andrew Gillum, and I be asking you to make me governor of this here state of Florida.” A screeching monkey sound is also heard on the horrific robocall, which circulated on Tuesday. The robocall refers to Andrew Gillum as a “negro” and a “monkey.” https://t.co/T1Opyvc1nw — NBCBLK (@NBCBLK) October 23, 2018 The ad veers into more terrible territory when the actor describes Gillum’s health care plan as “quite cheap” because “he’ll just give chicken feet to people as medicine.” The call also mentions that Jewish voters will support Gillum because Jews are “the ones that been putting Negroes in charge over the white folk, just like they done after the Civil War.” After the call ends, a disclaimer points out that The Road To Power website and podcast’s name is responsible for the ad. The Idaho-based group has a history of making racist robocalls, including those previously made against Gillum in August as well as in several other states such as Oregon and Virginia. As to whether Ron DeSantis has anything to do with the racist robocall, his camp fiercely denied any connection and denounced the ad in a statement. DeSantis, however, had blown a racist dog whistle with his comment advising Florida voters not to “ monkey up ” the election by voting for Gillum.
