B renda Snipes , the Broward County, Florida supervisor of elections, pushed back against GOP Gov. Rick Scott ’s suspension that threatens her pension. SEE ALSO: Brenda Snipes Quits Working As The Broward County Election Supervisor After The Disastrous Florida Midterms Snipes rescinded her resignation letter on Saturday, which was to take effect on Jan. 4. The letter preceded Scott’s suspension of Snipes on Friday for misfeasance, incompetence and neglect of duty, the Sun-Sentinel reported. Scott announced that Republican Peter Antonacci would replace the Democrat. “We believe it’s a malicious action that should not have happened,” Broward elections office attorney Burnadette Norris Weeks said of Scott’s suspension, adding that the governor’s move was an attempt to take away 75-year-old Snipes’ pension. Snipes earns a salary of $178,865 annually and would be eligible for a pension of $71,000 a year after 15 years of service as the county’s elections supervisor. A suspension, however, would eliminate her pension. Brenda Snipes is done with Florida elections. https://t.co/kHXuJVdnlr — NewsOne (@newsone) November 19, 2018 Snipes was attacked by Republicans, and even President Donald Trump , for her handling of the midterm election. She was harshly criticized for her management of the tight Senate race between Democratic incumbent Sen. Bill Nelson and Scott, who ultimately won the race. Broward failed to report vote totals to the state every 45 minutes on election night, and the county’s recount process took much longer than most other counties. Snipes also acknowledged that her office had misplaced more than 2,000 ballots included in the original count. Norris Weeks said Scott was partly to blame because he issued time-consuming records requests and lawsuits after the county experienced heavy voter turnout and a significant number of ballots by mail. By rescinding her resignation, Snipes intends to remain in office until her term ends in November 2020. “We will be fighting this to the very end,” Norris Weeks vowed. Trump publicly showed his contempt for Love on  the day after the midterms . “Mia Love gave me no love and she lost,” Trump said mocking the congresswoman, naming her among incumbent House members who didn’t shower him with praise and were defeated. “Too bad. Sorry about that, Mia.” She said it will be challenging for the GOP to achieve racial and gender diversity while Trump is still in office. The Democrats, on the other hand, gained 40 House seats in the midterm election, fueled in part by African-American women candidates. Abrams Battles For Full Count To Honor Every Georgian Who ‘Fought For Their Right To Vote’

Read the original post:

S tacey Abrams dismissed her GOP rival Brian Kemp ’s call for her to concede their race for Georgia governor, saying she wanted to honor voters’ sacrifices by making their ballots count. SEE ALSO: Black America ‘Did The Thing’ With High Voter Turnout On Election Day “Over the last few days, our Voter Protection Hotline has heard countless stories of Georgia voters who fought for their right to vote, but for whatever reason, were prevented from casting their ballot,” Abrams said in an Instagram post on Saturday. “I am fighting to make sure our democracy works for and represents everyone who has ever put their faith in it. I am fighting for every Georgian who cast a ballot with the promise that their vote would count.” Kemp, who oversaw the election as Georgia’s secretary of state, has reportedly started his transition to the governorship. However, no official winner has been announced because thousands of provisional ballots have not been counted. A complete count could trigger an automatic runoff. Kemp is currently ahead by approximately 60,000 votes and claims that it’s mathematically impossible for Abrams to win. However, Abrams counters that thousands of uncounted ballots are still out there and must be counted. If Kemp’s current 50.3 percent lead falls below 50 percent, Georgia law requires a runoff in early December. Meanwhile, the NAACP and Southern Christian Leadership Conference rallied for Abrams on Saturday, fuming about voter suppression targeting African-Americans at Georgia polling stations and during the early voting period. “We heard stories from voters who took time off work to vote, only to be turned away at their assigned polling precinct and every polling place they visited,” Abrams said. “Their voices deserve to be heard. They deserve justice. And that is why we will continue this fight.” SEE ALSO: Watch Racist White Women Harass An Andrew Gillum Supporter: ‘Go Back To Africa!’ ‘Dirty Tricks’: Stacey Abrams Voters Won’t Be Denied As Brian Kemp Rigs Voting Machines [ione_media_gallery src=”https://newsone.com” id=”3836205″ overlay=”true”]

Black America ‘Did The Thing’ With High Voter Turnout On Election Day

S prinkled among the millions of people in Georgia who were forced to wait as long as four hours just to cast their ballots were devoted African-American voters, many of whom couldn’t afford to take off that much time from work. But the chance at helping to make history by electing Stacey Abrams as the country’s first Black woman governor was something they just couldn’t pass up. In the face of numerous obstacles from the big bag of racist tricks intended to suppress the Black vote, the display of perseverance was impressive,  LaTosha Brown , a co-founder of the Black Voters Matter Fund, told NewsOne this week. See Also : ‘Dirty Tricks’: Stacey Abrams Voters Won’t Be Denied As Brian Kemp Rigs Voting Machines “I am very, very proud of Black people. Black folks did the thing,” said Brown who spent Election Day in Georgia helping to monitor and address voter suppression efforts. Brown glowingly recalled how African-American voters came out in droves to elect dozens of candidates who looked like them and to vote for tangible change across the country, but especially in places such as Georgia, Florida and Tennessee. “The turnout, the energy, the way I saw Black people working on the ground — listen, we did our part,” she added. Just finished canvassing in west Atlanta with Killer Mike. @BlackVotersMtr pic.twitter.com/DiZgQWrCWd — LaTosha Brown (@MsLaToshaBrown) November 6, 2018 Early figures supported Brown’s turnout observations. Across the country, overall turnout was at a 50-year high , according to NPR. More than 47 percent of eligible voters cast a ballot. Exit poll figures also showed that, indeed, African-Americans turned out in significant numbers. Black voters accounted for about 12 percent of the overall turnout—comparable to the previous midterm high of 13 percent in 2014, ABC News reported. Although several Black candidates made history, including Lucy McBath , Ayanna Pressley and Jahana Hayes , two of the biggest prizes have so far eluded Black voters. Andrew Gillum , who was competing to become Florida’s first Black governor, failed to win his race , while Abrams in Georgia was pushing for a recount or runoff election after a close race riddled with voter suppression. “Don’t write us off. We ain’t out the game yet,” Brown stated with deep conviction, adding that those two races were still major victories in Southern states stained by a blood-soaked history of white supremacy. Georgia! It ain’t OVER! We still need all hands on deck. We need folks to show up and demand Kemp count every vote. Show up this morning at 10:00am at the state capitol room #203. We can’t let them steal this one! https://t.co/3OPihD5cBd pic.twitter.com/5ULv1TK3Dr — LaTosha Brown (@MsLaToshaBrown) November 8, 2018 Brown also counted the passage of two key amendments — one each in Florida and Nashville — among the key victories for African-Americans. “They were some key critical wins that Black voters absolutely played a significant role,” Brown said. Amendment 4 automatically restored voting rights to 1.4 million ex-felons across Florida. Under the state’s felon voting ban, approximately 21.5 percent of African Americans couldn’t vote before Tuesday. In Nashville, Amendment 1 created a new citizen-led panel to hold the police accountable. Voters overwhelmingly passed the amendment after “a decades-long push from Black leaders in the city,” the Tennessean reported. Those successes didn’t come easy because of widespread voter suppression efforts against the Black people. From her vantage point at ground zero, Brown witnessed many of the suppression attempts in real-time. At a polling station that normally has 30 voting machines, there were just 15, she recalled. There were places that didn’t have power cords for voting machines and others where aging voting equipment was inoperable. Brown said numerous Black voters told her they pressed Abrams’ name before their machines instead selected the name of her Republican opponent,  Brian Kemp , who was overseeing the election as secretary of state. “I’m from Alabama where they are experts at voter suppression and intimidation strategies,” Brown said. “I’ve never seen anything like I witnessed in Georgia.” As a voting rights activist, she has demanded from officials to know why n 2018 Black people were still being mistreated at the polls and required to overcome voting rights obstacles in a nation supposed to be a democracy. “Where is the support from the freaking government, so that our votes are fucking counted?” she demanded. “Why is it a struggle for us to cast our damn vote?” SEE ALSO: Judge Rejects Brian Kemp’s Georgia Absentee Ballot Suppression Attempt Stacey Abrams Campaign Speaks Out On Trifling Brian Kemp Trying To Claim He Won Georgia [ione_media_gallery src=”https://newsone.com” id=”3835568″ overlay=”true”]

Simply put, it is mathematically impossible for Stacey Abrams to win or force a run-off election.” Brian Kemp  is also the secretary of state of Georgia, which means he is supervising his own election. Kemp has been sued repeatedly for voter suppression and even former President Jimmy Carter called on him to resign  from his position as secretary of state. Late Tuesday night Abrams said, “I’m here tonight to tell that votes remain to be counted. There are voices that are waiting to be heard. Stacey Abrams Refuses To Concede Georgia Governor Race

U PDATED: 6:34 a.m. EDT, Nov. 7 — After a suspenseful Election Night, Stacey Abrams said she wouldn’t concede the race to be Georgia’s next governor to Brian Kemp, who was accused of orchestrating widespread voter suppression against Black people before and during Election Day. Abrams hinted at a possible runoff election next month because of Kemp’s razor-thin lead that continued to dwindle Wednesday morning, according to the Atlanta Journal-Consitution . This race is NOT over. @StaceyAbrams is now closer than ever. And 9% of voters are still outstanding in heavily Democratic areas. — Shaun King (@shaunking) November 7, 2018 She continued : “Votes remain to be counted. Voices waiting to be heard. We are going to make sure that every vote is counted – because in a civilized nation, the machinery of democracy should work everywhere for everyone.” Original story:   G eorgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp  stooped to a new low, even for him, in his ongoing efforts to keep Black people from voting for Stacey Abrams , the Black woman running against him for governor. Voting machines, which fall under the responsibility of the secretary of state, were delivered to majority Black precincts without any cords to provide them with electrical power for voters to cast their ballots. Kemp’s “dirty tricks” caused delays of up to four hours at polling places where hundreds of voters at a time were left waiting. See Also: Coincidence? Black People In Georgia Typically Get The Oldest Voting Machines, Increasing Chances Of Error “Brian Kemp is playing in the game and he’s also the referee!”  Rashad Robins , president of the racial justice group Color of Change, told NewsOne Tuesday afternoon. “The word we’re hearing is about suppression and dirty tricks, long lines and broken down polling places.” Kemp, who has President Donald Trump ’s endorsement, oversees the election system. He’s also been on the receiving end of multiple federal lawsuits over his attempts to suppress Black votes. They range for rejecting certain absentee ballots , blocking approximately 53,000 voter registration forms and purging some 700,000 voters from the state’s voting rolls—all targeting African-American voters. Here are just a few of the reports that flooded social media about suppression in Georgia. No power cords for voting machines in African American majority neighborhood in Georgia. This is a disgrace. SMH! @tomreganWSB pic.twitter.com/YTXdXLAHzG — Everything Georgia (@GAFolIowers) November 6, 2018 Many of the reported problems apparently stemmed from old, decrepit voting machines that are concentrated in poor communities. “The counties and cities with the fewest resources are voting on the oldest equipment that tend to have the most problems,”  Edgardo Cortés , an election security advisor at the Brennan Center for Justice’s Democracy Program, confirmed to NewsOne during an interview on Monday. Kemp and Abrams were locked in a neck-and-neck race. Abrams has the chance to become the nation’s first African-American woman governor—in a red state that has not elected a Democratic governor in two decades. “Stacey Abrams’ opponents recognize that the only way they could win—when our folks are fired up—is to suppress the vote,” Robinson, of Color of Change said. “What I do think is really exciting is that folks, in the face of all that, are still turning out in large numbers.” SEE ALSO: Make Massa Happy! Twitter Might Be Removing Their Like Button, Which Literally NOBODY Asked For

Source: LEON NEAL / Getty Saying that Twitter has some problems would be the understatement of the century. The platform has been under fire for a while, but even more so within the last 2 years due to the state of our country and y’all’s little president instilling confidence in people who might otherwise be more closeted with their hatred. But with so many people running around on the platform doing both hateful and harmful things, there are a lot of areas where Twitter could improve–but apparently, their CEO Jack Dorsey has some other plans on his agenda that he thinks are more important. At a  recent Twitter event , Dorsey told a room full of employees and journalists that Twitter would be removing the heart-shaped Like button from the platform sometime “soon”. Twitter Communications confirmed a Like button rework was being considered as part of an ongoing effort to clean up the platform — with the aim of incentivizing “healthier conversations”. The tweet reads as follows: “As we’ve been saying for a while, we are rethinking everything about the service to ensure we are incentivizing healthy conversation, that includes the like button. We are in the early stages of the work and have no plans to share right now.” As we've been saying for a while, we are rethinking everything about the service to ensure we are incentivizing healthy conversation, that includes the like button. But not all of us want a conversation. A LIKE speaks volumes. ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.’” Most people aren't on here to debate anything. But in 2015, Twitter changed the Favorite button to a Like because, “You might like a lot of things, but not everything can be your favorite”. This was apparently an effort to help grow the platform, with the heart being a more, “universal symbol that resonates across languages, cultures, and time zones.” But according to Andrew Campbell, a researcher in the fields of e-mental health and cyberpsychology from the University of Sydney, Twitter’s biggest weakness has always been the heart saying, “it’s a strong emotion to say you love something.” This tweet from Josh Butler very well sums up a lot of people’s thoughts on Twitter and Jack’s need to constantly roll out and change things that aren’t really the problem: Users: hey can you get rid of the Nazis please Twitter: ok sure, we've changed the stars to hearts for likes Users: no no, zero Nazis please Twitter: yep we're getting rid of Vine Users: nah hey, what about the Nazis Twitter: ok ok fine, no more likes https://t.co/HKE0BrCiVU — Josh Butler (@JoshButler) October 29, 2018 What do you guys think about Twitter’s decision?
