A funeral is set for 11 a.m. Thursday for U.S. District Judge Matthew J. Perry, a giant of a civil rights lawyer who toiled relentlessly to dismantle legal segregation in South Carolina and then went on to become the state’s first black federal judge. Perry died of natural causes Friday just days before his 90th birthday. His body was discovered at his home on Sunday by a family friend. At his death, he was serving as a senior U.S. District Court judge, working every weekday in the downtown Columbia courthouse that was dedicated in April 2004 and bears his name. Oprah Wants You To Attend Her Class & “OWN Your Life” The funeral, which will be held at Brookland Baptist Church in West Columbia, is expected to draw hundreds of mourners, including federal judges from across the country, lawyers and judges in South Carolina, current and former law clerks and his many clients, who were involved in sit-ins and demonstrations that marked the 1950s and 1960s civil rights era. Gov. Nikki Haley has ordered flags at the State House to be lowered to half-staff on the day of his funeral, her spokesman Rob Godfrey said. The Rev. Charles Jackson Sr., Brookland’s pastor, will deliver the eulogy, said I.S. Leevy Johnson, owner of Leevy’s Funeral Home, which is handling the arrangements. Burial will follow in Greenlawn cemetery at the family plot. “All of his law clerks will serve as active pallbearers and members of the state and federal judiciary will be honorary pallbearers,” said Johnson. The funeral home is working with the U.S. Marshal’s Service to ensure security at the church, which seats 3,500. Perry’s home church, Zion Baptist, could not seat the anticipated crowd. ‘The Situation’ Jokes About Slavery At Comedy Central Roast

Originally posted here:

At Donald Trump’s Comedy Central Roast last night, Jersey Shore cast-mate Mike ‘The Situation’ Sorrentino, got up on stage to attempt some stand up comedy. As I suppose you would expect from someone who spends their days GTL’ing (gym, tan, laundry) and proudly proclaims, ‘I’m hooking up with this girl, your girl’s girl, and your girlfriend’s girlfriend’s girlfriend. Somebody’s gotta do it’, he took the low road. According to The Frisky , The Situation, addressed Donald Trump and Snoop Dogg (who openly smoked a huge blunt while on stage), and said; ‘hey, Snoop Dogg, Donald Trump and your ancestors had a lot in common — they owned real estate, and your ancestors were property! … This is my first time doing comedy!’. Seriously? I would never have guessed. What a fool. I’m sorry, but joking about the slave trade, and calling Black people property isn’t funny. Thankfully, the crowd at the gala didn’t think so either, and booed him off stage, making him the first roaster to be booed in over 10 years. Sadly, people trying to make light of slavery, seems to be a trend (remember Chelsea Handler at the VMA’s?). I’m all for not judging people for others mistakes and trying not to dwell on a situation, but it really does bother me when White people try to make light of the African American struggle for freedom and equality. What do you think? Is it becoming acceptable for someone, especially a White person to make jokes about slavery? Heartbreaking: Afghanistan War Hero Dog Accidentally Euthanized in Arizona Today | Her Puppies Are Safe (?) in the U.S.

November 15th, 2010 06:44 PM ET Afghanistan dog hero accidentally euthanized A dog rescued from Afghanistan after she alerted soldiers to a suicide bomber was accidentally euthanized at an Arizona shelter on Monday. A Pinal County Animal Care and Control employee has been placed on administrative leave for failing to follow procedures and euthanizing the wrong dog. The dog, Target, was recently brought over from Afghanistan by a soldier who had returned from his tour of duty. Target was featured by CNN for heroism after saving dozens of soldiers from a suicide bomber on February 11. “She got her name because the Afghans we lived with were constantly trying to off her. She's been shot in the leg. … The Afghans actually ran over her,” Sgt. Christopher Duke said, who helped care for Target in Afghanistan and has adopted her packmate Rufus. “There's no killing this dog for sure. She's pretty much been through it all, ” he said upon their reunion in July in Georgia. Target's new owner, Army Sgt. Terry Young whose life was saved by the stray, helped bring the 2-ish-year-old from Afghanistan to her new home in Arizona. She disappeared from Young's home on Friday. Facebook postings requested help in finding her. Target saved U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan Animal Care and Control received a call about a stray female shepherd-mix dog in the San Tan Valley area on Friday. An animal control officer picked up the dog and brought her to the shelter where the dog stayed over the weekend. The dog was not microchipped or licensed with the county, shelter officials said. On Monday morning, the employee mistakenly took the dog out of its pen and euthanized it. The dog was not scheduled for euthanasia. “I am heartsick over this. I had to personally deliver the news to the dog’s owner, and he and his family are understandably distraught,” said Animal Care and Control Director Ruth Stalter. “We work hard get to strays reunited with their owners. When it comes to euthanizing an animal, there are some clear-cut procedures to follow. Based on my preliminary investigation, our employee did not follow those procedures.” In an e-mail, Young told CNN affiliate KPHO, “I'm an absolute wreck today, and it's everything in my power to hold it together for me and my family. My 4-year-old son just can't understand what is going on with Target and keeps asking me to get the poison out of her and bring her home. They don't want her to go be with God yet.” “An investigation is under way, and we will cooperate fully. We will also thoroughly review procedures to ensure that something like this does not happen again,” Stalter said. “This is unacceptable, and no family should be deprived of their companion because procedures were not followed.” Target was pregnant when she helped thwart the suicide bomber by attacking him. She had her litter of puppies in Afghanistan. Target's puppies have since been brought to the United States. added by: EthicalVegan

Lesbian Students Stopped From Graduating

Two female high school students in Oklahoma are firing back at their school for refusing to let them graduate after discovering the two are a couple. According to KWTV News, 18-year-old Melissa McKenzie said she was kicked out of Del City High School in Del City, Okla., at the beginning of the semester when the principal found out she was living with her girlfriend instead of her family. The principal then told her if she returned to her family's home, she would be welcomed back to school. Kelsey Hicks (pictured), McKenzie's girlfriend, dropped out of school but wanted to finish her education so she could become a firefighter. Upon asking school leaders if she could return, she said they instead encouraged her to drop out. “The principal will say 'Well, you're gay. You're not going to do anything with your life. You might as well just drop out now,'” Hicks said. “It's stuff to put you down that makes you want to drop out.” http://advocate.com/News/Daily_News/2010/11/15/Lesbian_Students_Stopped_from_Gra… added by: timetide

Students Religious Liberties Act for Arizona

Arizona Governor Jan Brewer has signed into law the “Students Religious Liberties Act”, giving public school students new rights to express their religious convictions. The act ostensibly prohibits schools from discriminating against students or parents on the basis of religious viewpoint or expressions. Yet critics express concern the law leaves open the possibility for a school’s anti-harassment, anti-bullying or non-discrimination policies to be invalidated.
