Nas Kicks Off Levi’s 2010 Pioneer Recording Sessions With Slick Rick Cover

‘The song kind of helped me out when I was a young knucklehead,’ Nas says of ’88 classic ‘Hey Young World.’ By Steven Roberts Nas Photo: MTV News For its Levi’s Pioneer Sessions, the popular denim company called on a dozen musical acts to recreate some of the songs that helped shaped not only their careers, but the course of music over that last few decades. A lineup that includes John Legend, the Roots, the Dirty Projectors and She and Him makes up their 2010 Revival Recordings Program. To kick things off Levi’s approached one of the greatest MCs of all time, Nas, and asked him to re-craft a song of his choosing. The Queensbridge MC knew he wanted to go with a song that spoke to him when he was a “young knucklehead”: rapper Slick Rick’s ’88 classic “Hey Young World.” “Slick Rick is one of the greatest artists — not just MCs — artists in the world, and I just really love his music,” Nas told MTV News. “Hey Young World,” it just really spoke to me when I was young. What he was saying in the song kind of helped me out when I was a young knucklehead,” he explained. “I just wanted to honor the song and honor Ricky.” Nas recalled hearing the song for the first time in his sixth-floor Queensbridge apartment. His crew would come over, huddling close to listen to a bootleg copy of Rick’s debut, The Great Adventures of Slick Rick. The song’s positive message — its uplifting chorus promising “the world is yours” became the title of Nas’ classic gem — helped steer the budding MC from a bad path. “It was a terrible copy, but everybody was surrounding the radio listening to this album, and when “Hey Young World” came on — it caught everybody,” he continued. “We were about to go outside, it was night time. I remember almost everybody was there, I remember it like yesterday … I heard the song, and I [had gotten] into it with somebody earlier outside, and I didn’t know how it was going to end. And when I heard the song, it kind of calmed me down from going further. It really did, it calmed me down.” Re-recording the track also brought Nas back to the late-’80s New York City of his childhood. “There were car shows on 125th Street [in Harlem, New York], where no cars would hardly move. You would see people with Connecticut plates, New Jersey plates. The fashion was insane! There were street vendors outside selling knockoff Guess jeans on 125, Jamaica Avenue [shopping strip in Queens, New York], gold teeth, the snorkel jackets,” Nas remembered, alluding to the fur-lined hooded coats. “New York had a way about itself that will probably never happen again.” The song is available for download at the Levi’s Pioneer Sessions website. Arizona cracks down on teachers with heavy accents

Arizona has been under fire for a controversial anti-illegal immigrant law and now its Department of Education is embarking on a course of action that many critics also believe is being enforced in a discriminatory fashion. “The Arizona Department of Education recently began telling school districts that teachers whose spoken English it deems to be heavily accented or ungrammatical must be removed from classes for students still learning English,” The Wall Street Journal reported. “This is just one more indication of the incredible anti-immigrant sentiment in the state,” said Bruce Merrill, a professor emeritus at Arizona State University who conducts public-opinion research. Nearly half the teachers at Creighton, a K-8 school in a Hispanic neighborhood of Phoenix, are native Spanish speakers. State auditors have reported to the district that some teachers pronounce words such as violet as “biolet,” think as “tink” and swallow the ending sounds of words, as they sometimes do in Spanish. http://rawstory.com/rs/2010/0524/arizona-cracks-teachers-accents/ added by: zichi

Kirsten Dunst is Scary in a Bikini of the Day

I spent the better part of a month thinking about stalking Kirsten Dunst when she was living in Montreal, the city I live in. Unfortunately, she is hardly relevant enough to get my lazy ass searching for her, so I didn’t bother. I heard some random funny rumors about her, like that her boyfriend is in his late 50s, that she was buying lots of drugs from a drug dealer I know, that she went to a club and got kicked out because she was sitting in a bottle service table, that she likes vegetarian food, and most importantly, that she is short, skinny, and unhealthy looking….like the kind of pussy you throw a quarter at on the street, even if it is your emergency quarter that your mom sewed into your pants for a phone call if you get mugged, cuz she’s just that hurting….I admit that I would have rather made my own opinion on her by hiding in her hotel closet, but I’ll take their word for it, and here she is in some shitty bikini pics. ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ Gets Star-Studded 30th Birthday Party

Harrison Ford, Mark Hoppus, Ewan McGregor and others celebrate the ‘Star Wars’ sequel. By Adam Rosenberg, with reporting by Todd Gilchrist Harrison Ford Photo: MTV News A long time ago, in the galaxy that we still live in, “Star Wars” creator George Lucas rocked Hollywood to its foundations when he achieved the unthinkable: “The Empire Strikes Back” became the rare sequel to surpass its predecessor, “Star Wars,” in terms of quality. Friday (May 21) marks the 30th anniversary of the release of “Empire” (which now carries “Star Wars: Episode V” in its title), and famous fans descended on L.A.’s ArcLight Theater for a special screening followed by a Q&A with Han Solo himself, star Harrison Ford. As “Star Wars” heroes and other celebrities walked the event’s red carpet, they spoke to MTV News about the enduring legacy of Lucas’ classic sci-fi series. “[Lucas] introduced us to that world with the first movie, and then when it came time for us to see ‘Empire,’ we were so … invested in that world that it worked,” said Ewan McGregor, who starred as a young Obi-Wan Kenobi in the more recent Prequel Trilogy. Ford echoed McGregor’s comments, noting how audience familiarity helped bolster the sequel’s reception. “We were able to … deepen the relationships between the characters and make a film that was probably more emotional,” he said. Without the need to explain the universe, a cast of colorful characters became the movie’s sole focus. “It has a really amazing second-act feel to it,” said Blink-182 frontman Mark Hoppus. “It’s really dark. It’s moody. It’s not just an action-adventure; there are all these different elements that come into it. … It’s a really great movie.” Even MTV vet Paul Scheer, co-creator of “Human Giant,” was there to share his excitement about the series and “Empire” in particular … in his typically entertaining way, of course. ” ‘Empire’ … one of the best sequels of all time, right?” he said, going into fanboy enthusiasm. “The original cast? All kick ass. Mark Hamill gets hit in the face by a wampa, right? Then they sleep in taun-tauns, people getting their hands cut off, Yoda’s out there talking some crazy stuff — we never met Yoda before. It’s awesome. Light, dark, it ends on a great cliffhanger. Amazing.” Which “Star Wars” movie is your favorite? Share your thoughts in the comments. For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Megan Fox And Michael Bay: Our Five Favorite Moments

Now that Fox is out of ‘Transformers 3,’ we take a look at the duo’s salacious back-and-forth. By Eric Ditzian Photo: MTV News The months surrounding the summer 2009 release of “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” were endlessly entertaining when it came to movie journalism. The world watched with fascination, horror, giggles and gasps as director Michael Bay and star Megan Fox went at each other. The duo slammed and defended each other and threw each other under the bus only to reach under and stage a PR rescue mission. Now, all that is behind us, as Fox has parted ways with the robot franchise , and the run-up to the release of “Transformers 3” in July 2011 promises to be significantly less titillating as a result. We’re not gonna lie — we’ll miss this salacious back-and-forth between two of Hollywood’s most entertaining personalities. That’s why we decided to take a lighthearted look back at our favorite moments from Fox and Bay’s creative partnership. I’m Terrible, He’s Terrible In the summer of 2007, Megan Fox was a little-known actress who had appeared in a handful of TV series and the forgettable Lindsay Lohan vehicle “Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen.” A year later, as “Transformers” stomped into theaters on its way to a $700 million worldwide gross, Fox was a superstar. You’d have thought she’d be pretty pleased about her breakout turn. Not so much. “I’m terrible in it,” she told Entertainment Weekly. “It’s my first real movie, and it’s not honest and not realistic. The movie wasn’t bad, I just wasn’t proud about what I did. … But unless you’re a seasoned veteran, working with Michael Bay is not about an acting experience.” She’d go on to compare Bay to Napoleon and Hitler , call him a “nightmare to work for” and declare that he has “no social skills at all.” I Made You, I Can Unmake You Unsurprisingly, such statements didn’t sit well with Bay. The guy has made six movies that have grossed more than $100 million. Clearly, he knows what he’s doing. And he knows when his actors push things just a bit too far. “Well, that’s Megan Fox for you,” he told the Wall Street Journal. She says some very ridiculous things because she’s 23 years old and she still has a lot of growing to do. You roll your eyes when you see statements like that and think, ‘OK, Megan, you can do whatever you want. I got it.’ … Nobody in the world knew about Megan Fox until I found her and put her in ‘Transformers.’ I like to think that I’ve had some luck in building actors’ careers with my films.” She Just Can’t Quit Him Despite this war of words, Fox confessed to MTV News that she is “addicted” to making movies with Bay. It’s that sort of statement that makes you think that, behind all the heated press reports, the two shared a rewarding — if not fond — working relationship. “You get addicted to those big action movies,” Fox told us last summer. “You get addicted to the Bay-hem. You step away from it, and you’re relieved and you’re relaxed and you do something that’s quieter and you feel like you’re really working on it and you’re fleshing out and figuring things out. But then you sort of miss that abuse.” He Just Can’t Quit Her As the public nastiness between Bay and Fox was at its height, members of his “Transformers” crew posted an unauthorized open letter on his official website. The letter called Fox “queen of talking trailer trash,” dubbed her acting “cringe-able” and suggested she might have a future career as a porn star. Now it’s one thing if Bay himself speaks freely about his star, but he was not about to let others use his considerable platform to trash her. He promptly pulled the letter from his site and penned his own , one which again suggested the two really do respect each other. “I don’t condone the crew letter to Megan,” Bay wrote. “And I don’t condone Megan’s outlandish quotes. But her crazy quips are part of her crazy charm. The fact of the matter is, I still love working with her, and I know we still get along. I even expect more crazy quotes from her on ‘Transformers 3.’ ” That’s Just Meg and Mike Being Meg and Mike Such quotes, alas, are not to be. Much has been made of their feud in the past and much will be made in the future. But the key to their whole relationship just might be this: It’s not that they battle any more than any other director-and-actor duo in Hollywood; rather, they both happen to speak their minds in public, for better or worse. Fox and Bay are outspoken people, and that’s a big reason why their quotes always pop up in headlines. Boring or tightlipped creative types simply don’t made news. When it comes to Fox and Bay, that’s just how they roll. “Obviously, what he said is not untrue, about me saying ridiculous things all the time and being 23,” Fox told MTV News at Comic-Con last year. “That’s all accurate. Those are all things that he would say to me and has said to me. That’s actually one of the kindest things he’s said about me. I don’t feel like we’re in a war of words at all. That’s just me and Mike. That’s how we talk.” Will you miss Fox and Bay’s back-and-forth? Let us know in the comments! REVIEW: Michael Douglas’s Solitary Man More Shocking Than Interesting

Public humblings are a risky maneuver, whether engineered by politicians, tycoons, athletes or movie stars: Nothing less than abject vulnerability will do, and the performance will be scrutinized for sincerity with a righteous, collectively hooded eye. You may not have been aware that Michael Douglas was scheduled for a public humbling, and yet every aspect of Solitary Man , a lewdly annotative study of aging male salaciousness, is engineered to tweak our received ideas about its star. Part two of this exercise, Oliver Stone’s sequel to Wall Street , which finds former financial alpha lizard Gordon Gekko freshly released from prison, may have a better shot at tapping those ideas; it at least has more reason to presume they have remained relevant in the public imagination.

Maroon 5 Get Violent In ‘Misery’ Video

‘We decided to focus on violence instead of sex this time around,’ bassist Mickey Madden tells MTV News. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Kelly Marino Maroon 5’s Adam Levine Photo: MTV News Maroon 5’s new, Joseph Kahn-directed “Misery” video is many things — almost all of which are violent. “The cool thing is, when Joseph wrote the treatment … after reading a few sentences, I thought it was really amazing,” M5 frontman Adam Levine told MTV on the set of the video. “Because it kind of turns the whole idea of the sexual energy between two people — a guy and a girl, a music video, you’ve seen that a million times — that exists in this video, but it’s turning it on its ass and having the girl be the more domineering one who’s trying to kill me.” “We decided to focus on violence instead of sex this time around,” bassist Mickey Madden added. “We like to switch it up,” Levine joked. “The next one will be about drugs.” We’ll just have to wait and see about that. In the meantime, we have “Misery” to look forward to. The band shot the clip with Kahn last week in Los Angeles, and from the sound of things, it’s going to be very different from anything M5 have done in the past. “I think it’s going to be fun. I just had my first harness experience. That was very interesting. I got lowered onto the street, in the middle of traffic, because I fall off a building,” Levine laughed. “I’m curious to see how it turns out. A lot of falling and violence [so far]. I’ve already been beaten up and thrown off a building today. We’ll have to see what comes next.” And while the “Misery” video is a new look for the band, the song itself — the first single from their upcoming Hands All Over album, which hits stores September 21 — mines familiar territory. Set over a decidedly funky beat, it’s Levine documenting the decay of yet another relationship, something that even he will admit has become his bread and butter in recent years. ” ‘Misery’ is about … the desperation of wanting someone really badly in your life but having it be very difficult. Kind of what all the songs I write are about,” he smiled. “I’m not treading on new ground, but I think a lot of people — including myself — deal with that all the time. Relationships are difficult, and it’s good therapy to write about them.” Are you looking forward to the “Misery” video? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists Maroon 5

Crystal Bowersox’s Hometown Fans Say Her ‘Idol’ Run Gives Them Hope

Teens and other followers in Ohio are inspired by Bowersox’s success. By Gil Kaufman Crystal Bowersox Photo: FOX TOLEDO, Ohio — Like its neighbor to the north, Detroit, Toledo has been hit hard by the Great Recession and the shrinking American auto industry. Downtown is littered with the hulks of giant factories that used to help supply parts and materials to the Motor City’s car industry, but which now sit fenced off, their broken windows and weed-choked parking lots a testament to better times in this industrial city. But despite areas with some of the highest double-digit unemployment rates in the state, these days there are plenty of reason for hope thanks to the unlikely championship run of the area’s new favorite daughter, “American Idol” top three contestant Crystal Bowersox. “She came from a small town, so it shows anybody can do anything,” said Derek Wood, 14, who gathered with more than 200 others to watch the elimination show in the Baptist church across the street from Bowersox’s childhood home two weeks ago. “I think it gives [kids around here] the chance to open up their dreams and try other things … think they can actually do it. I think she’s going to win.” That kind of optimism can be found all over the Toledo area, from the spanking-new signs proclaiming tiny Elliston, Ohio (population 75), the hometown of Bowersox, to the dozens of store windows painted with messages of encouragement for MamaSox in neighboring Oak Harbor, put up by the cheerleaders from the singer’s old middle school. After Bowersox made it through to the top four that night, Oak Harbor native Jaime Sellback, 20, was relieved and said the success has helped create a sense of community in the area. “I think it’s brought everyone together, really, I mean, to have an ‘Idol’ from our town?” she said after attending her first viewing party at the church. “It’s just crazy to think that someone’s going to hopefully win it — well, she will win it — and be famous … just from a small town, and she’s done so good.” Of course she’s a bit biased, but Bowersox’s grandmother, Alice Bowersox, is not only proud of her granddaughter’s success, but glad the rest of the world finally gets to see what she’s known all along. “We knew she was going somewhere,” said Alice Bowersox. “We really knew she had a lot of talent. And now the rest of the world is finding it out.” When it’s suggested that her granddaughter’s rise from a modest rural Ohio background to the biggest stage in television is a quintessential American success story, Alice blanches a bit, showing some of that signature Bowersox grit that Crystal has displayed when sparring with the judges on the show. “We always knew that she was going to go far,” she said modestly. “And coming from a small town doesn’t really have a whole lot to do with it. It was her drive and she really worked hard for this. That one night [on ‘Idol’] when she talked about singing in the subway in Chicago, she really did that. She’d sing anywhere.” The previous night, Dr. Jeff Bunkers, who was Bowersox’s orthodontist when she was a teenager, sat up close to the TVs at the Village Idiot in Maumee, Ohio — where Bowersox had a standing weekly engagement up until she left for “Idol” — and watched her perform with a big smile on his face. “I think it shows people that … if you can dream it, it’ll happen. No matter how long it takes, it will happen,” he said. “So I think we should all have some dreams and let’s work towards fulfilling those dreams. Because I think Crystal … she’s showing us that no matter where you come from, what you think, you can really make it happen.” That can-do message has spread all the way down to the school Bowersox attended, Oak Harbor Middle School, where principal Marie Wittman has been using an old video of the singer winning her sixth-grade talent contest as a way to motivate students during their recent Ohio achievement tests. “I can actually play off of Crystal’s success because she was very driven at a young age and has worked so hard,” said Wittman. “I told the students that with hard work and dedication and all of those good things, that they will be successful some day, that they never know where their dreams can take them.” With the annual talent show coming up, she said some students have already taken Bowersox’s example and signed up for guitar lessons thinking that they might follow in the Ohio native’s footsteps. Perhaps nobody is prouder, though, than local musician Ron Rasberry , the man who was one of the first in the area to give Bowersox a shot at playing on a real stage and who has nurtured her musical aspirations for more than a decade. “Man, people are walking around and smiling,” said Rasberry, perched on a stool on the stage at the gritty downtown Toledo bar Papa’s Tavern, where Bowersox began playing at age 14 and where she is now enshrined in a hand-painted mural on the wall beside Rasberry. “This city needs a good shot in the arm, you know. Right now things are little tough and rough around here. … She’s putting smiles on people’s faces that wouldn’t ordinarily watch that show. And I’m one of them.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.
