Ultra Music Festival Blames Winter Music Conference For Scheduling Conflict

Fans, artists remain unsure of March plans because of rival dates for Miami electronic dance music events. By Adam Stewart Winter Music Conference 2010 Photo: MTV News The ongoing debate between the Winter Music Conference and the Ultra Music Festival is beginning to morph into a strange amalgamation of a boxing match and a presidential election. Each side has spoken its initial case, and now both are in the midst of a battle to secure artists, events and the masses of fans that come along with them. While choosing not to respond to the breach-of-contract claims alleged by Winter Music Conference officials, the Ultra Music Festival did begin to address some of the other looming questions regarding the awkwardly disjointed Miami dates. In a press release posted on the UMF website Thursday, UMF officials claim that the factors leading to the festival dates falling outside of WMC week were completely out of their control, implying that WMC organizers — who’ve scheduled their festival to begin March 8, a full two weeks earlier than expected — are the ones to blame. In a press release posted Wednesday evening, WMC organizers admitted they chose their conference dates based strictly on venue availability, which will for the first time land them at the Miami Beach Convention Center. According to the Miami Beach Convention Center website, the facilities were not available during the last week in March due to another large-scale event. Bill Kelly, owner and co-founder of WMC, told MTV News that the Convention Center was someplace they had always hoped to be, due not only to its prime South Beach location, but also its ability to accommodate the conference’s expanding size. But Ultra sees this claim as nothing more than an excuse used by WMC, which has intentionally detached itself from UMF. Ultra organizers insist that they “aligned [themselves] with every contact and resource [they had in] Miami Beach to try and secure a host hotel [for WMC].” Kelly claims that WMC officials did their best to find an accommodating location during the last week in March but came up empty-handed. Additionally — and as first reported by MTV News on Thursday — UMF officials validated speculation that its inability to move its three-day event to within the official WMC time frame was a direct result of the massive Calle Ocho street fair, which takes place on March13. UMF confirmed that its hope to align dates with WMC week “was rendered impossible by the City of Miami police department as they [would] not have the resources to host Ultra Music Festival and Calle Ocho in Miami on the same weekend.” WMC reminds us that the dates and locations of its conference have varied considerably over its 26-year run, falling between February and late March with locations between Fort Lauderdale and Miami. Conversely, Ultra officials insist that in recent years, the electronic dance music industry as a whole has come to recognize and embrace the last week of March as the true WMC week, and that many of the artists’ tour schedules have already assumed the late March dates. “Large-scale events and festivals traditionally do not move their dates around year to year,” says the Ultra statement, adding that “a move like this [should] have to be done well over a year in advance to allow time for proper planning.” So what does this mean for the hundreds of thousands of bewildered fans who feel left out in the rain? Some new information suggests there is the potential for two epic music- and party-saturated weeks in the Miami sun. Thursday afternoon, the Miami New Times contested an MTV News report in which Club Space owner Louis Puig claimed the City of Miami Beach would not issue pool and beach party permits outside of the official WMC dates. Upon further investigation, Miami Beach official Max Sklar told MTV News that the city “considers a number of different factors before approving or denying an application.” He went on to explain that the “special-event permit approvals are not based on whether the event occurs during [WMC].” That said, the dozens of pool and beach parties that traditionally take over the Collins Avenue hotels now have some serious decisions to make and potential allegiances to declare. Online EDM retailer Beatport has thrown one of the premier must-see WMC pool and beach parties each year since its launch and is just one of the many entities faced with this difficult and potentially costly decision. “We throw our free Miami parties and events to connect the DJs we love with as many hard-core fans as possible,” says Beatport CEO Matt Adell. “The fracturing of some of the other events across the entire month of March certainly complicates our planning, as I am sure it does for thousands of others. We are working on a revised plan for Miami in March and will share it with the community as soon as it is fully baked.” Who will side with whom in the WMC/UMF debate? By Shaheem Reid, with additional reporting by Adam Stewart and Akshay Bhansali Eminem Photo: Universal It seems like the only time Just Blaze isn’t in the sky these days is when he’s working. Blaze has been DJing at places like the Winter Music Conference when he isn’t busy traveling back and forth and producing for people such as Jay Electronica and Eminem . “I’m working on Eminem’s album still, so I’ve gotta hurry up and get back to Detroit,” Just said. He was fresh off the turntables at club Grand Central during the Fool’s Gold party in Miami, where he spun a two-hour house set. “I’ve been back and forth — Detroit, New York, Detroit, New York, Miami, back to Detroit — for like the past two and a half weeks. [The album], it’s getting there, but we still got a lot of work. So I wish I could stay [in Miami] longer.” Blaze says he’s sworn not to reveal too much about Eminem’s album, but he’s already calling it a classic, one of the ultimate efforts in Slim Shady’s storied catalog. “As far as what’s going on in Detroit, a lot of good music is being made,” Blaze said of Em. “He’s really back spitting. The wordplay is crazy, the metaphors are crazy. He’s really back on his game. He had his ups, he had his downs, he’s back way, way, way up. This is definitely going to be up there with the best of his albums, for sure, for sure. The fact that he’s branched out working with a lot of different people now, collaborating in a lot of different ways that he never has before, I think he’s going to surprise a lot of people.” Other than Em, Blaze has Jay Electronica on his plate, but what about the super-producer linking back with the other Jay, as in Young Hova? Just says he talked to the Jiggaman right before the U.S. leg of the Blueprint 3 tour ended. “Maybe,” he answered with a sly grin about whether or not he and rap’s G.O.A.T. would collaborate again. “You never know.” Related Artists Eminem

Tommy Lee Joins Deadmau5, Kelis Joins Benny Benassi At Ultra Music Festival

Above and Beyond, Swedish House Mafia also close out the two-day fest during WMC 2010. By Akshay Bhansali Tommy Lee (file) Photo: Bill McCay/ WireImage MIAMI — With over 200 DJs vying for the attention of close to 100,000 people in attendance this Saturday at the Ultra Music Festival in Miami, in the end it was an Italian Stallion, the holy trinity of Swedish dance music and a guy who dons the mask of a fallen mouse that reigned supreme. Yes, on the second and final day of UMF, held at Miami’s Bicentennial Park and coinciding with the city’s Winter Music Conference, fans were treated to a healthy dose of dance music talent. British techno and house DJ Carl Cox closed out the night at the Carl Cox & Friends arena. Producer Paul Oakenfold, and Above and Beyond closed out action at the UMF Brazil Arena. But of course, the Ultra Main stage is where most gathered. Italian house DJ Benny Benassi hit the stage in the early evening with a series of hair-raising, relentless party anthems that had the audience in a frenzy for almost the entire set. Along with an excellent remix of Jimmy Hendrix’s “Purple Haze,” the Grammy-winning DJ/producer spun his 2002 club hit “Satisfaction” and “Electro Sixteen.” More notably, singer Kelis, who has worked with Benny on her upcoming Flesh Tone album , wore a metallic silver face mask and silver lace-up boots as she joined Benassi onstage for their collaboration “Spaceship” and the David Guetta-produced “Acapella.” And then came the trio of Sebastian Ingrosso, Axwell and Steve Angello — billed together as the all-star Swedish House Mafia. They’re known for their dramatic thumping performances, and this one certainly fell in line what fans have come to expect. SHM had the crowd jumping with Sebastian Ingrosso’s hit “Kidsos,” based on MGMT’s “Kids,” and then came “Meich Clocks,” the Ingrosso mash-up using Coldplay’s “Clocks.” Supermode’s (an Axwell/Angello group) “Tell Me Why” was also rabidly received. Of course, the highlight was their yet-unnamed new single, a mix of eerie atmosphere and euphoric resolution that had fans begging for more. And certainly no one was prepared for M

Will.I.Am, David Guetta, DJ Tiesto Rock Ultra Music Festival At WMC 2010

LMFAO, Will.I.Am guest during Guetta’s set. By Akshay Bhansali DJ Tiesto Photo: MTV News MIAMI — Dance music’s biggest weekend in America, kicked off with a series of powerful performances at Day 1 of the Ultra Music Festival (held during the Winter Music Conference), at Miami’s oceanfront Bicentennial Park. With a multitude of stages (and even a Heineken-inspired dome), the weekend’s line-up is probably UMC’s largest and most star-studded grouping yet, boasting over 200 DJs from around the world and the likes of Swedish House Mafia, Deadmau5, Armin van Buuren, DJ Tiesto, and David Guetta. Over at the UMF Ibiza Stage, both Kaskade and Will.I.Am dropped new material for fans — Kaskade from his forthcoming Dynasty LP and Will.I.Am for undetermined releases. “I think it’s important to come out to WMC to test out the new beats you’ve been making — rockin’ the crowds, learning from the crowds,” Will told MTV News Friday night, just before he took the stage again to join a close friend. Indeed, Black Eyed Peas collaborator and dance-music titan put on what seemed like a hip-hop collab fest, being joined by many friends on the Ultra main stage during the course of his set. Whipping the crowd into a frenzy with his thumping “Gettin’ Over” before transitioning into “One Love.” Will jumped onstage for “On the Dancefloor,” then Guetta charged into a series of his hits, including the Lil Jon/ DJ Chuckie remix of “Sexy Chick” and BEP’s “I Gotta Feeling.” He ended up closing his set with a premiere of a new song called “Getting Over You” (featuring LMFAO), and sure enough, the party rock duo, who are currently on tour with BEP, joined Guetta on stage for his finale. Closing out the night at Bicentennial Park was Dutch trance heavyweight DJ Tiesto , who had the thousands of fans in attendance clapping in unison for the majority of his nearly two-hour-long set. With pyrotechnics blasting, the crowd jumped to its feet, singing along with his Nelly Furtado collaboration “Who Wants To Be Alone” and other hits from Tiesto’s catalog, including “Escape Me,” I Will Be Here” and “Love Comes Again.” Related Videos Sights And Sounds From Winter Music Conference 2010 Related Artists Will.I.Am DJ Tiesto David Guetta

A-Trak On His And Travis Barker’s WMC Tribute To DJ AM

‘It was very important for me to have one show where I could do an official dedication’ to AM, A-Trak says. By MTV News staff, with reporting by Akshay Bhansali DJ A-Trak Photo: MTV News MIAMI — On Thursday night, Travis Barker, A-Trak, Lil Jon Jazzy Jeff and Steve Aoki were some of the guests on hand to honor the late DJ AM at an unannounced tribute show on Thursday night at Miami’s LIV nightclub during the Winter Music Conference. MTV News caught up with A-Track in the wee hours of Friday morning (March 26), after his set at the Fools Gold party at Grand Central. “At LIV, it was a party for DJ AM — obviously a dedication to him,” A-Trak said. “[He was] a dear friend of mine, we miss him a lot. I’m now doing shows with Travis, so it was very important for me, especially knowing how much Travis and AM established a partnership before [AM] passed, to have one show where I could really do an official dedication and a dedicated routine to him — a scratching thing that he particularly liked, and do it in his honor and pass the torch, in a sense.” The lineup of the show — part of the Winter Music Conference — was a tightly guarded secret , though most in attendance suspected that both Barker and Trak, who recently toured as a duo, were part of the bill. And when they hit the stage shortly after midnight, those suspicions were confirmed. The Hottest News From WMC 2010!

Snooki Fave DJ Kaskade Talks Tiesto Collabo At WMC 2010

House DJ reveals how a tweet from the ‘Jersey Shore’ star boosted his fanbase. By Akshay Bhansali, with additional reporting by Adam Stewart Kaskade Photo: MTV News MIAMI — With a series of notable remixes over the years for the likes of Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga and Nelly Furtado, progressive house-music DJ and producer Kaskade has become a force to be reckoned with in the electronic music world. He’s had several songs on the Billboard Hot Dance char and amassed a considerable fanbase. And then one fine day, “Jersey Shore” cast member Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi, decided to tweet about a song she was listening to. “She’s a fan of my music which was really cool,” Kaskade (a.k.a. Ryan Raddon) told MTV News on Thursday at the Winter Music Conference . “I actually found out through Twitter. I saw her on Twitter. She was talking about, ‘Oh, I was just sitting back listening to my favorite Kaskade mix.’ And I was like, ‘Snooki, isn’t that the girl on “Jersey Shore”?’ “I don’t watch a lot of television so I didn’t really know,” he admitted. “I hadn’t seen the show yet, and my friends are like, ‘Yeah, yeah, moron! Whatever!’ But it’s interesting. man, after she mentioned me on Twitter, it was like thousands of more [fans] within a week of her Twittering about me, and it was amazing. But that’s what’s cool about dance music, you never know. The teller at the bank listens to it, and so does Snooki, so it’s cool.” DJ Tiesto, another artist who’s certainly on Snooki’s radar and worshipped by virtually every person in attendance at WMC this week, also is a fan of Kaskade’s work. And to prove it, the Dutch trance titan did something he’s seldom ever done: He co-produced a song with Kaskade called “Only You,” which is making its debut in DJ sets around WMC this week. “My sound and Tiesto’s sound, they are actually quite different, but there is some similarity to it,” Kaskade said. “I think melodically it makes a lot of sense, even though our production styles are very different, and it’s cool that he can recognize that. He’s always been a big supporter of my music, but he reached out to me, and I was like, ‘Dude, yeah, let’s do this, let’s kill it.’ I’m just really happy with the way it turned out.” Kaskade is set to release his album Dynasty on May 11. And given the recent string of dance music hits on mainstream radio, he’s upbeat about his prospects. “There was a little creeping up there in the ’80s and early ’90s with Deee-lite, and Madonna was voguing, and it was like, ‘Oh my gosh, is this gonna happen?’ ” he recalled. “But the timing wasn’t right yet. When Lady Gaga did it, we were all like, ‘Cool.’ This really is our time.” Stick with MTV News all week for more coverage of the Winter Music Conference 2010. Lil Jon Shoots Video For ‘Outta Your Mind’ At WMC 2010

The crunk king shows off his house DJ skills in Miami. By Akshay Bhansali, with additional reporting by Adam Stewart Lil Jon Photo: MTV News Lil Jon is a house music DJ. While this may come as news to those of you who only expect crunk hip-hop with smatterings of “yeahs” and “whaaats” from him, the producer says he’s just going back to his roots. “I was a house DJ in the ’90s actually,” Jon told MTV News at the Winter Music Conference on Wednesday. “House has always been a part of me. I love house music. I love music, no matter what kind of music it is, from dance, house, electro, hip-hop, crunk, gansta, West Coast, country western. That’s how I grew up, I just love music.” Moments before our interview, Lil Jon finished his set at Nikki Beach’s Flying Circus party with “Outta Your Mind,” his collaboration with LMFAO and the first single from his long-awaited Crunk Rock album (due out June 8). As he let the song rip, he told the crowd that they were all to be a part of the video, and the cameras were already rolling. “We’re shooting a video all over WMC, and I wanted to capture the essence of Lil Jon’s life,” he said. “Lil Jon’s life and LMFAO’s life is: You wake up and you are running and gunning until we put our heads down. From party to party, we party with everybody from the hip-hop to the electro crowd, and that’s what we’re really capturing in the video. We love everybody, and everyone loves us.” WMC provides a chance for Jon to get together with all of his new friends in the electronic world. Jon is featured on a DJ Chuckie Remix of David Guetta’s “Sexy Chick,” and through Chuckie, he came to know David Guetta. And now LMFAO and Steve Aoki are among his favorite colleagues. “My boy is Steve Aoki now,” Jon said. “It’s crazy because me and Aoki met here in Miami, and he just hit me one day out of the blue, like, ‘You! I want you to get on this beat.’ And we got on Skype — me, him and Afrojack, which is a crazy combination — and we ended up linking up in the studio later.” Lil Jon said it’s not that big of a stretch for him to be playing one of the country’s biggest electronic music festivals. After all, a party is a party, and if there is one thing Lil Jon can do, it’s bring parties to a roaring frenzy. “They don’t really expect me to play house music at all,” Jon said. “People really don’t understand that this is my world too. Any time I play any house record, people just, like, bug out. I play a lot of Dutch records. I play baile funk. I play electro. I play house. I just bring the party to the table. I’m the guy that everybody looks to bring the party to them.” Stick with MTV News all week for more coverage of the Winter Music Conference 2010.
