Kansas Man Spends Decades In Prison For A Crime Committed By His Doppleganger, Gets Awarded $1.1 Million

Source: Mongkol Nitirojsakul / EyeEm / Getty The state of Kansas has finally passed a new law that provides compensation to people who are wrongly imprisoned — and first up to receive his retribution is 42-year-old Richard Anthony Jones. According to NBC News , Jones spent 17 years in prison for a crime he has always insisted he didn’t commit. Then attorneys discovered that there was a man who looked nearly identical to him and had a similar name. Back in June 2017, Jones was released from prison after witnesses said they could barely tell the difference between the two men and no longer thought Jones was guilty. On Monday, a settlement was reached and the state of Kansas agreed to pay Jones $1.1 million for his wrongful conviction. Jones was arrested in 1999 for an attack and robbery in the parking lot of a Walmart in Roeland Park, Kansas. Reports say that physical evidence linked Jones to the crime, but he fit the description of the suspect. Two other mistaken conviction lawsuits are currently pending in Kansas. Hopefully justice will be served.

Wrongful Death: 68-Year Old Man Dies After Hospital Pumps His Lungs With Cleaning Detergent

Source: Nomad / Getty 68-year old grandfather, William Hannah , has died after Salford Royal Hospital in the U.K. mistakingly filled his lungs with cleaning detergent instead of saline. The Hannah family’s lawyer told PEOPLE , During the procedure the doctor found there was no saline solution in the equipment trolley and so asked a healthcare assistant to pass this to him. However, the assistant became confused and instead of providing the doctor with the requested saline, accidentally handed him an unlabelled bottle containing detergent that they had prepared for cleaning equipment. The doctor then unknowingly used the cleaning solution to wash-out William’s lung. Following an internal investigation into the wrongful death, the Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust concluded that the hospital did not deliver the “high standard of care” and offered its apologies to the family. Hearings for the case begin in February 2019. SMH, so sad.

Nick Gordon Ordered To Pay $36 Million For Bobbi Kristina’s Death As you know, Nick Gordon was found legally responsible for Bobbi Kristina’s untimely death last year. Though no criminal charges were able to be filed, the Bobbi Kris’ estate was able easily to win their wrongful death suit since Nick never showed up to court proceedings to defend himself. Bobby Brown said that Bobbi Kris’ earning potential was unlimited, and by helping extinguish her life, Nick Gordon was responsible for cutting those possibilities short. While the family originally sought $50 million for the loss of BK’s life, the judge granted just $36 million. As TMZ reports, Gordon was found to be liable for an itemized list of costs associated with Bobbi Kris’ death: Here’s a partial list: — Conversion (stealing funds/assets) at $1.5 mil with punitive damages of $250k — Assault and battery/medical damages at $1.3 mil, plus $4.2 mil because Gordon was under the influence of drugs and alcohol — Pain and suffering at $13 mil — Loss of life at $15 mil, including her net worth and future potential income Excellent victory on Bobbi Kristina’s family’s part…but you know Nick doesn’t have two dimes to rub together. We doubt they’ll ever get even a decent fraction of that money from him. Splash/WENN

Ice Cube And Dr. Dre Cleared Of Responsibility In Hit And Run Death Remember when Suge Knight ran over one of his former friends — killing him in the process — as security tried to block him from entering the set of Straight Outta Compton back in early 2015? While Suge awaits trial for the murder, the family is suing everyone they thing is involved in the man’s tragic death…including Dr. Dre and Ice Cube. However, a judge has ruled that the blame lies solely with Suge . All claims against the rapper/moguls have been dropped. Via TMZ : Good news for Ice Cube and Dr. Dre — they’ve been dismissed from the wrongful death lawsuit that had been filed against them and Suge Knight for the death of Terry Carter. A court ruled Cube and Dre aren’t responsible for Carter’s death because it’s unfathomable to blame them for Knight’s reckless and allegedly criminal act — running over and killing Carter. TMZ broke the story … Cube and Dre were named defendants, along with Suge, when Carter’s family filed the suit … claiming Cube and Dre hired known gang members as security to keep Knight away from “Straight Outta Compton” shoot locations. Suge ran over Carter shortly after security gave him the boot, and the family felt that’s what sent him into him into a rage. The lawsuit remains against Suge, who also has a murder trial pending for the fatal hit-and-run. Well, good. Bobbi Kristina’s Estate Administrator Sued Pat And Cissy Houston For Refusing To Pay Estate Legal Bills Bobbi Kristina Brown’s aunt and grandmother have fired back in a lawsuit accusing them of shirking paying the bills on the estate of their late relative. Marion “Pat” Houston and Emily “Cissy” Houston denied that they’ve held up paying Bobbi Kristina’s estate expenses, and said they’re not paying for the estate’s wrongful death lawsuit against bad boy Nick Gordon because they believe it’s a waste of money, and it’s Bobbi Kristina’s father, Bobby Brown, who has the authority to file the wrongful death suit, not the estate administrator, Bedelia Hargrove. The family said in court papers that they never gave the OK for Hargrove to file the suit in the first place. “It is not in the estate’s best interest to pursue the wrongful death claim against Gordon, because the costs of litigation will be prohibitive, the likelihood of obtaining and collecting on a judgment is extremely doubtful, and such an action by Mrs. Hargrove, the administrator, will only serve to deplete the estate,” the Houston’s wrote in their answer to the suit this month in Fulton County, Ga. Superior Court.

Katherine just won’t give up. Katherine Jackson Appeals Decision In Wrongful Death Case Trying to appeal this case and dealing with Conrad Murray’s release may prove too much for Katherine. According to Spin: Katherine Jackson is seeking an appeal in the wrongful death trial that declared concert promoter AEG not liable in the early demise of her son, Michael Jackson. The initial charge was that the company had hired Dr. Conrad Murray — recently released after serving two years behind bars for involuntary manslaughter — with the knowledge that the physician was incompetent. After a long and complicated trial, a jury decided AEG did nothing wrong. They declared that Murray was perfectly fit to do his job, though we’re still not convinced he’s a good candidate for a reality television show. While Jackson certainly died by the man’s negligent hand (this having been proven in a court of law), and certain higher-ups at AEG displayed some disgusting behavior in dealing with the King of Pop (pushing Jackson despite his flagging health, referring to him as “the freak”), the matter appeared to be settled. Katherine Jackson’s latest move is being alternately criticized as a money-grab and praised as an attempt to seek justice.
