Countdown To Lockdown: Former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin To Begin 10-Year Prison Sentence

Sayonara Nagin… Former Mayor Ray Nagin On His Way To Prison After being found guilty on bribery and money laundering charges , the time has come for Ray Nagin to report to the clink. Via HuffPost : Former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin was due to report to federal prison on Monday to begin serving a 10-year sentence for corruption during the years when the city was struggling to recover from the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina. Nagin, a Democrat, was thrust into the national spotlight in 2005, when Katrina overwhelmed levees and flooded 80 percent of New Orleans, killing 1,500 people and causing some $80 billion in damage. He is due to serve his time at a federal prison in Texarkana, Texas, according to television station WDSU. Nagin, 58, plans to appeal his conviction. He has said in court filings that he is nearly penniless, and has been granted a court-appointed lawyer. The onetime cable company executive who served as New Orleans’ mayor from 2002-2010 was convicted on 20 criminal counts including bribery, conspiracy and money laundering, all tied to payments he received for granting city contracts. Seeking re-election in 2006, Nagin, a black politician who had enjoyed strong support from both black and white voters, seemed to adopt a racially divisive tone, urging residents to rebuild a “chocolate New Orleans,” referring to its majority black population. Under federal sentencing rules, Nagin would serve about 8-1/2 years in prison with good behavior. SMH.

Lindsay Lohan: Will She Go to Jail in 2013?

Lindsay Lohan just dodged another legal bullet. After firing Shawn Holley, her longtime lawyer nevertheless showed up and entered a plea for her in court. Had Holley bailed, after being dismissed a day earlier, a warrant would likely have been issued for Lohan’s arrest. She’s playing with fire, that’s for sure. Linds faces a probation violation, charges of lying to law enforcement and – 3,000 miles away – a separate case in which she was arrested for punching some chick . She’s lookin’ at up to eight months for the probation violation alone, criminal counts aside. Which begs the question: Will she be behind bars at some point this year? Girl’s been a wizard at wriggling out of these things, but she’s getting more and more out of control , and the sheer volume of legal woes will be tough to surmount. Vote in THG’s office pool below – and realize that a “yes” vote does include the brief stints she is known for. If it’s an 82-minute stay before posting bail, you win. Will Lindsay Lohan go to jail in 2013?   Yes. Her luck is running out and she’s going crazy! No! She always finds a way to get out of it! View Poll »

Catalina Clouser, Stoned Teen Mom, Arrested For Driving Off With Baby on Top of Car

Catalina Clouser, a 19-year-old Phoenix, Ariz., woman, was arrested this weekend for driving away with her baby … ON TOP OF THE CAR. Police claim she put her five-week-old baby on top of her car in his car seat and drove off, apparently forgetting he was there, and not even noticing when the seat fell off of the vehicle and landed in an intersection, according to police. All of a sudden Tanning Mom looks like parent of the year. Woman Drives Away With Baby on Roof Neighbors discovered the baby on the road , still strapped to his safety seat, which was lying on its side. Luckily, the baby was completely unhurt. Clouser, who allegedly had been smoking marijuana, was arrested and charged with aggravated driving under the influence and child abuse. “We believe that whatever she was under the influence of was the deciding factor in what did happen to this child and we’re extremely happy that for the baby this turned out well and the baby is going to be OK,” a police spokesman said. Clauser, her boyfriend and their friends had been smoking marijuana earlier in the evening at a nearby park, but the boyfriend was arrested on suspicion of aggravated DUI when they went to a store – with the baby in the car – to get beer. Upset that her BF was arrested, Clauser went to a pal’s home to smoke more pot. Clauser left around midnight and apparently put the sleeping baby on the roof of the car and drove off, forgetting he was there, and continued driving. Leilani Gerlach, a homeowner who lives across from the intersection, notified police after she saw the baby in the car seat on the street. “We were both rolling our eyes in astonishment that someone could forget their baby,” Gerlach said. “The car seat was turned to the side so anyone passing by wouldn’t be able to tell there was an actual baby inside. Thank god they stopped.” After police arrived, two people walked up and told them the baby was Clausen’s. As the officers talked to the two, who identified themselves as friends of Clausen and her boyfriend, the young mother drove up, police said. “[She] had gotten into her car, set the baby seat on top of the car and forgot that the child was up there. It does not appear that immediately she realized what happened,” the police source said. “I think that perhaps she got where she was going and realized that she did not have the baby in the car.” “There was damage to the car seat, it was scraped but there was no damage to the child.” The baby is now in custody of Child Protective Services.

Jerry Sandusky Trial to Begin This Week; Embattled Coach Seeks Delay

Defense lawyers in Jerry Sandusky ‘s child sex abuse trial, set to begin this week, asked the Pennsylvania Supreme Court for a delay in the proceedings. A lower court rejected the request late last week. Jury selection is scheduled for Tuesday in the trial of Sandusky, 68, who was arrested in November and faces 52 criminal counts for the alleged abuse of 10 boys over 15 years. He denies all of the allegations, which tarnished Penn State University and brought down the legendary Joe Paterno, who passed away last winter. The defense said it wanted more time to review material from the prosecution and a delay is warranted for their experts and potential witnesses to be available at trial. Judge John Cleland , who will preside over the trial, wrote that another issue involved grand jury secrecy, so the motion for a continuance had been filed under seal. Cleland did not rule on the defense’s effort to have the charges thrown out. Sandusky’s lawyers have argued that in some instances the allegations are too vague, and in other circumstances rely on impermissible hearsay or lack sufficient evidence. The judge also had not addressed requests by five alleged victims for a court order that would prevent their identities from being disclosed to the public. Opening statements are expected June 11.
