It sure looks like Star Wars creator, George Lucas , dropped a bombshell in a fascinating Bloomberg Businessweek feature on how Disney acquired Lucasfilm late last year. When the article’s author, Devin Leonard, asked Lucas if the original Star Wars cast will appear in the J.J. Abrams -directed Episode VII , the Force Father replied: “We had already signed Mark and Carrie and Harrison —or we were pretty much in final stages of negotiation. So I called them to say, ‘Look, this is what’s going on.’ ” He pauses. “Maybe I’m not supposed to say that. I think they want to announce that with some big whoop-de-do, but we were negotiating with them.” Then he adds: “I won’t say whether the negotiations were successful or not.” George Lucas Backtracks On ‘Star Wars Episode 7’ Cast Spoiler I love that little Jedi Mind Trick that Lucas attempts at the end. You will not think that I have just thrown a giant hydrospanner into Disney’s Star Wars marketing efforts. It sure sounds like backpedaling to me, and when I contacted Leonard to ask him whether Lucas left with the impression that Hamill, Fisher and Harrison are indeed on board, he replied: “I took it as a confirmation.” That’s not the only revelation contained in the feature, which you can read here . Lucas also reveals that the negative Internet chatter over his Star Wars prequels got to him. “He found it difficult to be creative when people were calling him a jerk,” writes Leonard, who then quotes Lucas saying: “It was fine before the Internet….But now with the Internet, it’s gotten very vicious and very personal. You just say, ‘Why do I need to do this?’ ” Lesson learned: The Dark Side controls the Internet, but The Force lives on at the Magic Kingdom. And here’s hoping Harrison Ford finally gets that Han Solo death scene he wanted in Episode VI . It’s quite a day for outlandish costume design. First Lionsgate releases a bunch of posters featuring cast members from The Hunger Games: Catching Fire dressed in some memorable outfits, and now, well, filmmaker Robert Rodriguez has trumped them with a single image. The El Mariachi director gave EW.com an exclusive character poster from his upcoming Machete Kills movie that depicts Modern Family star Sofia Vergara wearing one helluva lethal bra. Vergara plays Lady Desdemona in this sequel to Rodriguez’s blood-soaked 2010 picture Machete . According to EW , the follow-up, which hits theaters in September “revisits the title character, Machete Cortez, ( Danny Trejo ) a dangerous, hard-luck anti-hero. This time the U.S. government (led by Charlie Sheen in the Oval Office) recruits Machete to battle his way through his native Mexico to topple an arms dealer who wants to rain destruction on the U.S. with a orbital weapon.” It’s worth noting that the cast includes Lady Gaga , who appeared on a recent cover of Rolling Stone in a similar Fem-bot-style bra. You can’t text in space (not yet anyway), making it the perfect place for Danny Trejo ‘s Machete to get his slaughter on. But alas, we’re just going to have to wait for Machete Kills Again…in Space!, because first the suddenly ubiquitous Trejo (he has two movies out on DVD this week) is re-teaming with director Robert Rodriguez for Machete Kills , the second film in a planned trilogy. Shooting is set to begin in April and Rodriguez says he expects much of the cast to return, presumably skincluding Jessica Alba , Michelle Rodriguez and maybe even Lindsay Lohan , all among the lucky few left alive at the end of Machete (2010). According to Deadline , the plot for Machete Kills goes like this: “The new film finds Machete recruited by the U.S. Government for a mission which would be impossible for any mortal man. Machete must battle his way through Mexico to take down a madman cartel leader and an eccentric billionaire arms dealer who has hatched a plan to spread war across the planet with a weapon in space. Machete takes on an army in an effort to dismantle a plan for global anarchy.” We’re just wondering how they’re going to top Machete ‘s Anatomy-Award winning scene where a nude Mayra Leal pulls a cell phone from her chocha. Perhaps that satellite should orbit Uranus? See more from grindhouse girls Mayra Leal , Alicia Rachel Marek and Lindsay Lohan (and her body double) with Machete (2010) right here at MrSkin.com!
George Clooney was the king of the (very weak) box office this weekend, as his bare-bones thriller The American took the top spot. In a tightly-fought battle for second place, it was the surprisingly still-strong Takers who edged out Machete — though the difference between them is so small, they may swap places come Tuesday morning. And meanwhile Going the Distance ended up not going anywhere at all. Your weekend receipts are here.
It’s the Wednesday before Labor Day, which means we’re all in this long late-summer slog together. Bless Fox’s heart, they’ve given us a fairly decent means of whiling away at least a little of that time — first by setting the megaviolent spectacle Machete for release this Friday, and then by supplementing it with random Lindsay Lohan gossip and vaguely racist posters for film bloggers to play with.
In keeping keeping with Movieline’s fine tradition of reader service and/or forensic hype analysis, please find herewith the latest in our series of handy pop-culture FAQ’ s. This time around, it’s Machete , which opens this weekend with all kinds of delicious contributions from Robert De Niro, Lindsay Lohan, Jessica Alba, Steven Seagal and the one-and-only Danny Trejo in the title role. You have questions, I’ve got answers (and spoilers , so be warned).

4 clips of Robert Rodriguez’s new Mexploitation flick Machete have surfaced online , and while the last glimpse we had of Danny Trejo’s blade-wielding anti-hero made excellent use of blood ‘n guts, these clips are little less gory and show off the impressive supporting cast, including Michelle Rodriguez, Jessica Alba and Robert DeNiro doing his best George W. Bush impression.
