First Social Network Review is a Rave

Scott Foundas has the first review of David Fincher’s Social Network , and not surprisingly (considering Foundas is on the New York Film Festival programming committee that made the film its opening-night selection), it’s a big, huge rave. ” The Social Network is splendid entertainment from a master storyteller, packed with energetic incident and surprising performances It is a movie of people typing in front of computer screens and talking in rooms that is as suspenseful as any more obvious thriller. But this is also social commentary so perceptive that it may be regarded by future generations the way we now look to Gatsby for its acute distillation of Jazz Age decadence.” That “bang” you just heard was the pistol officially starting the Oscar race. Spider-Man Pulls a Girl with the Dragon Tattoo While Looking for Female Lead

Marc Webb’s Spider-Man reboot has taken a page out of David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo talent search by pairing one American with four foreign-born actresses in an attempt to cast Peter Parker’s love interest (who, FYI, isn’t Mary Jane). The current shortlist : Teresa Palmer, Imogen Poots, Lily Collins, Ophelia Lovibond and Emma Roberts. ( Mary Elizabeth Winstead was on the list, too, but unfortunately didn’t make the cut.) Based on previous experience , expect the role to go to Roberts. [ THR /Heat Vision ]

Guess Which Movie is Flirting With a Rare 0% on Rotten Tomatoes?

Of the hundreds of films reviewed and ranked each year at Rotten Tomatoes, only a handful make it into theaters with the spectacular disapproval of every critic who laid eyes on it. And tomorrow, after a long summer of bashings , trashings and general eviscerations , one such film may arrive tomorrow in the season’s grand finale of futility — a 0-percent rating. Any guesses?

Did Alice Eve Leave X-Men: First Class Because of Script Problems?

How did January Jones come to occupy the part in X-Men: First Class that had been previously tapped for Alice Eve ? Comic Book Movie reports that Eve petitioned Fox to be let out of her contract after script changes left her unhappy with the direction and size of the role. Huh. Well, it’s a good thing Jones has so much to do during her day job on Mad Men ! Er, never mind. [ Comic Book Movie via Cinema Blend ]

Big Brother Repulsion Index: Robots and the Return of the Catfight

So last night’s episode of Big Brother did not feature a houseguest masturbating (or “me-mancing”) in the shower, but it was still pleasurable for viewers, mainly because Ragan engaged a surprise guest in the catfight of the season. Meanwhile, a paid extra wearing a robot costume wandered the Big Brother property dissing houseguests. Warm up your “Oh no you didn’t” finger and click ahead to see how the showdowns affected last night’s index.

Nervous Lake Havasu Officials Emphasize They’re Piranha-Free

Piranha 3D may have pumped $18 million into the economy around Lake Havasu, Arizona, but it also appears to have made very stupid tourists very scared. “One woman was bringing up to me that the movie was coming out, and she asked – as serious as serious can be – ‘Oh, but are there still piranha in the lake?'” one local resort owner told the LAT . “At first, I kind of took it as a joke. But then I let her know that that’s the computer-generated part of the movie. And she was very relieved, saying, ‘Oh, I’m so glad to hear that.'” I’ve been sitting here for five minutes trying to think of a response that obviously doesn’t exist, so… moving on, I think. Betty White Can’t Stop, Will Write Two Books

Continuing to strike while the iron remains surprisingly hot, Betty White has signed a deal with G. P. Putnam’s Sons to write two books for the publisher in the next two years. Listen Up! , due in 2011, is about the “life lessons learned during her incredibly varied and long career in Hollywood, with an emphasis on the extraordinary past 15 years of the star’s life,” while 2012’s The Zoo and I will chronicle White’s work with the Los Angeles Zoo. Seeing how White’s career has been trending, expect her to star in movie versions of both in 2013. [ NYT /ArtsBeat ]

Bedbug Panic Grips NYC Multiplexes!

The following is presented largely without comment because I am too busy sealing my doors, duct-taping my pants and shirt tight at the ends and renouncing public moviegoing forever : “[A] new division of bloodthirsty bedbugs has sacked the AMC Empire 25 multiplex in Times Square. A moviegoer who requested anonymity tells us that 30 minutes into [Sunday] night’s screening of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World , she was ‘covered in bites.’ [… T]he AMC on 125th is fighting a bedbug infestation as well.” And this is how I become a DVD reviewer. Budget-Busting Battleship Adds Brooklyn Decker

Because you can’t have a summer franchise without a supermodel , Peter Berg has added swimsuit-issue favorite Brooklyn Decker to the top-shelf cast of Battleship as the love interest for Taylor Kitsch’s naval officer. For those keeping score at home, the $200 million Universal production now has Decker, Kitsch, Alexander Skarsgard and Rihanna above the line. Money well spent! Meanwhile, who’s next? No seriously, which random person will be next to get cast in this thing? [ Latino Review ]
