God Isn’t Fixing This: N.Y. Daily News Cover Slams "Coward" Politicians in Wake of Massacre

The New York Daily News’ cover in the wake of yesterday’s San Bernardino, Calif., massacre is both provocative and highly political. By design. The publication calls out those it feels could do something to end the plague of gun violence, but instead revert to useless platitudes, time after time. The tweet of the Daily News front page, which hits newsstands in print form this morning, is already the most retweeted of 2015 for the paper. Beneath the headline God Isn’t Fixing This, the cover reads: “As latest batch of innocent Americans are left lying in pools of blood, cowards who could truly end gun scourge continue to hide behind meaningless platitudes.” U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan and GOP presidential candidates Rand Paul, Ted Cruz, Jeb Bush and Lindsey Graham all responded with “prayers.” Four pull quotes from the Republican political leaders are plastered on the publication’s front page in eerily similar, arguably meaningless glory. Think that means a lot to the victims of San Bernardino – 14 dead and 14 wounded – and the victims of the inevitable next mass shooting? For their part, and by contrast Democratic presidential hopefuls Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders pointedly called for “action” to stop gun violence. President Barack Obama, meanwhile underscored the need for stronger gun control laws in the United States after Wednesday’s mass murder. It’s a message he has stressed repeatedly in recent years, and weeks, as he is forced to address tragedies like this with alarming frequency. While the Daily News is obviously in the business of selling papers and ads and benefits from the viral sensation that is this cover, you tell us: Is it a viral sensation at least in part because it says what so many people are thinking but are afraid to, and so jarringly hits the nail on the head? AND VOTE: Time for stronger gun control measures? YES. Fewer guns, fewer tragedies! NO. It’s unconstitutional and won’t stop anything! View Poll »

Paul Ryan: Gay Adoption Bill Would Get My Vote

Congressman Paul Ryan led a town hall meeting in Janesville, Wisconsin last night, answering a number of questions about the economy, the sequester and other budgetary issues. But while the former Vice Presidential candidate expectantly blamed President Obama and the Democratic-controlled Senate for most of the country’s economic woes, he surprised many with his response to a question about gay adoption. “I do believe that if there are children who are orphans who do not have a loving person or couple, I think if a person wants to love and raise a child they ought to be able to do that. Period. I would vote that way,” Ryan said. In 1999, the Congressman voted to ban same-sex couples in the D.C. from adopting children. But Ryan says he changed this stance years ago, only speaking publicly about it for the first time at last night’s hotel conference room gathering. As for gay marriage ? Ryan answered that inquiry simply and straightforwardly: “I do believe marriage is between a man and a woman.” Ryan is the House Budget Committee chairman and is in his home district as part of a week-long congressional recess.

Deneeta Pope, Paul Ryan Ex-Girlfriend, Wishes V.P. Hopeful Well Despite Political Differences

Deneeta Pope, the African-American ex-girlfriend of Republican V.P. nominee Paul Ryan, wants nothing to do with the upcoming Presidential election. She’s also a Barack Obama supporter , though she wishes Ryan well. Ryan mentioned in an interview years ago that he’s experienced racism in part because he has a black sister-in-law as well as a black ex-girlfriend. This came up again recently after some of Ryan’s policies have been criticized – fairly or otherwise – as detrimental to the African-American community. Deneeta Pope has since been ID’d … and wishes she hadn’t been. Pope said yesterday, a day after Paul Ryan’s acceptance speech at the RNC, “I’m not interested in talking. I don’t know why everyone is calling.” “I’m newly married and would just like to be left alone.” Deneeta did speak briefly on the newly-minted V.P. hopeful, though, telling the Daily Mail that while she remains an ardent Barack Obama backer, she can’t help but cheer for the #2 man on the GOP 2012 ticket at the same time. Pope, 40, said, “I am indeed a Democrat. That’s no secret. But although I have a different political association to Paul, I support him and wish him success.” “Paul is a very nice guy, a kind guy and a family guy.” Daneeta says that she remains in touch with the Wisconsin Congressman; Paul and his wife, Janna Ryan , were even invited to Pope’s wedding in May. Wonder if she has a Paul Ryan shirtless pic or two of her own. Election 2012 :

Hi Hater: Paul Lyan’s RNC Speech Is Filled With Lies And Loopholes

Guess the fact checkers were busy last night. Paul ‘Who Needs Medicare’ Ryan was spittin’ lies left and right during his speech on Wednesday night. He did uphold one promise tonight though…Ryan said before tonight’s show that “they wouldn’t let fact checkers get in the way.” The Wisconsin congressman and GOP vice presidential candidate repeatedly chided President Barack Obama for blaming the jobs and housing crises on his predecessor, saying that his habit of “forever shifting blame to the last administration, is getting old. The man assumed office almost four years ago -– isn’t it about time he assumed responsibility?” Ryan then noted that Obama, while campaigning for president, promised that a GM plant in Wisconsin would not shut down. “That plant didn’t last another year. It is locked up and empty to this day. And that’s how it is in so many towns today, where the recovery that was promised is nowhere in sight,” Ryan said. Except Obama didn’t promise that. And the plant closed in December 2008 — while George W. Bush was president. It was just one of several striking and demonstrably misleading elements of Ryan’s much-anticipated acceptance speech. And it comes just days after Romney pollster Neil Newhouse warned, defending the campaign’s demonstrably false ads claiming Obama removed work requirements from welfare, “We’re not going to let our campaign be dictated by fact-checkers.” Ryan, for his part, slammed the president for not supporting a deficit commission report without mentioning that he himself had voted against it, helping to kill it. He also made a cornerstone of his argument the claim that Obama “funneled” $716 billion out of Medicare to pay for Obamacare. But he didn’t mention that his own budget plan relies on those very same savings. Sit your fake azz down Paul. Come November you’ll see how far all of this lying gets you. Put On Blast: Rage Against The Machine Rocker Gives Paul “Who Needs Medicare” Ryan A Ho Sit Down Over Comments About Liking Their Music, But Not Their Lyrics!

Paul Ryan thinks he’s so cool. If he’s trying to seem “in touch” with our generations and the millions of us that ain’t young Republicans, this was the wrong music choice to announce to us all because he just comes off lookin’ cray. Rage Against the Machine’s lead guitarist, Tom Morello, doesn’t appreciate the accolades either. He took to Rolling Stone to let us know how he felt about the right-winged poser and slams him for “liking” the very music that goes against everything Ryan and Money Mitt stand for. Paul Ryan’s love of Rage Against the Machine is amusing, because he is the embodiment of the machine that our music has been raging against for two decades. Charles Manson loved the Beatles but didn’t understand them. Governor Chris Christie loves Bruce Springsteen but doesn’t understand him. And Paul Ryan is clueless about his favorite band, Rage Against the Machine. Ryan claims that he likes Rage’s sound, but not the lyrics. Well, I don’t care for Paul Ryan’s sound or his lyrics. He can like whatever bands he wants, but his guiding vision of shifting revenue more radically to the one percent is antithetical to the message of Rage. I wonder what Ryan’s favorite Rage song is? Is it the one where we condemn the genocide of Native Americans? The one lambasting American imperialism? Our cover of “Fuck the Police”? Or is it the one where we call on the people to seize the means of production? So many excellent choices to jam out to at Young Republican meetings! Don’t mistake me, I clearly see that Ryan has a whole lotta “rage” in him: A rage against women, a rage against immigrants, a rage against workers, a rage against gays, a rage against the poor, a rage against the environment. Basically the only thing he’s not raging against is the privileged elite he’s groveling in front of for campaign contributions. You see, the super rich must rationalize having more than they could ever spend while millions of children in the U.S. go to bed hungry every night. So, when they look themselves in the mirror, they convince themselves that “Those people are undeserving. They’re . . . lesser.” Some of these guys on the extreme right are more cynical than Paul Ryan, but he seems to really believe in this stuff. This unbridled rage against those who have the least is a cornerstone of the Romney-Ryan ticket. But Rage’s music affects people in different ways. Some tune out what the band stands for and concentrate on the moshing and throwing elbows in the pit. For others, Rage has changed their minds and their lives. Many activists around the world, including organizers of the global occupy movement, were radicalized by Rage Against the Machine and work tirelessly for a more humane and just planet. Perhaps Paul Ryan was moshing when he should have been listening. My hope is that maybe Paul Ryan is a mole. Maybe Rage did plant some sensible ideas in this extreme fringe right wing nut job. Maybe if elected, he’ll pardon Leonard Peltier. Maybe he’ll throw U.S. military support behind the Zapatistas. Maybe he’ll fill Guantanamo Bay with the corporate criminals that are funding his campaign – and then torture them with Rage music 24/7. That’s one possibility. But I’m not betting on it. This is the second time this week one of these dumb azz Republican candidates has referenced music while lookin’ like a contradictory wankster. Source Images via WENN/Twitter

Kim Kardashian: The Bathing Suit Showdown!

Kim Kardashian did something crazy this weekend. No, she didn’t tell her intern to stop posting on Twitter or Facebook. Nor did she spend time with Kanye West without first alerting the paparazzi to their whereabouts. Instead, the reality star – who has posed in a certain type of swimwear so often that we’ve dedicated an entire album to Kim Kardashian bikini photos – went strolling on the beach in… a two-piece! She published the look on Instagram, of course, because that’s just what she does. But this means readers can now compare the two styles and decide which is best on Kim:

Janna Ryan: Five Facts About Paul Ryan’s Wife

Janna Ryan, the wife of U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan, has quickly and predictably been thrust into the national spotlight since her husband, a Wisconsin Congressman, was announced as the Republican nominee for Vice President by Mitt Romney. Here are a few things to know about the 43-year-old Janna: 1. Janna Ryan is 43, and married Paul in 2000. She is stay-at-home mom raising three young children in Wisconsin, Elizabeth, Charles and Samuel (above). 2. Ryan, whose maiden name was Little, grew up in Madill, Oklahoma. Both of her parents spent their careers as successful lawyers in private practice. A town in Oklahoma, Little City, is named after her family. Like her parents, Janna has a law degree, having graduated from George Washington in 1998. 3. Her family has strong political – and Democratic – connections; Her uncle, David Boren, served as a Democratic governor of Oklahoma and later as its U.S. senator. Boren’s son, Dan Boren, is Janna’s cousin and a member of House of Representatives. A Blue Dog Democrat, he has often voted across party lines. 4. Before marrying Paul, Janna was a Washington operative herself, forging an early professional career as a congressional aide and healthcare lobbyist. Friends describe her as being able to navigate between different worlds – from small-town Oklahoma, where she’s from, to prestigious Wellesley College and to D.C., where she is well-versed in complex policy debates. “She is very comfortable in and around politics. She grew up in a political family, and it comes very naturally to her,” said Leslie Belcher, a Washington lobbyist who worked on Capitol Hill with Ryan and was later one of Ryan’s bridesmaids. 5. Friends and Romney campaign officials say that while her exact role is unclear, she would undoubtedly be an asset to Romney-Ryan ticket. “I think she is very relatable,” said Missy Edwards, a lobbyist in D.C. who became friends with Ryan when they both worked on Capitol Hill. “She’s from a small town, (with) three young kids, smart, and focused on her family, first.” “They got married eyes wide open, knowing that they wanted to dedicate themselves to public service, and that meant that Janna wouldn’t work, and Paul would dedicate himself” to working in Congress, said Jodi Bond, a vice president at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, who has been friends with the Ryans for decades. Mitt Romney picked Paul Ryan for Vice President this morning, and apparently thinks very highly of him, as Paul received a promotion within five minutes! Okay, not really, but in introducing the Wisconsin Congressman and rising GOP star to a Norfolk, Va., crowd, Romney finished his remarks with a gaffe: “Join me in welcoming the next President of the United States, Paul Ryan!”

Paul Ryan to Run For Vice President With Mitt Romney; GOP Ticket to Campaign Saturday

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney announced today that House Budget Chairman Paul Ryan is his pick for Vice President. The Wisconsin Congressman will be introduced as the V.P. nominee as “The Romney Plan For A Stronger Middle Class” bus tour kicks off in Virginia. Romney is expected to speak at 8:45 a.m. in Norfolk, Va., with a retired military battleship as a backdrop … fittingly the U.S.S. Wisconsin. Two others high on Romney’s short list of VP contenders – former Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty, Ohio Sen. Rob Portman and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio – were informed in recent days that they would not be on the ticket. Instead it will be Paul Ryan, 42, already considered a rising star in the Republican Party, is currently the chairman of the U.S. House Budget Committee. He’s been in Congress since 1999 and is best known this session for his controversial budget plan this term that includes an overhaul of Medicare. Democrats have persistently claimed his plan would “end Medicare as we know it,” but the GOP considers Ryan a leading voice on fiscal issues. Both well-versed and telegenic, Ryan has stood by his plan as a solution to an ever-growing deficit and out-of-control entitlement spending. Ryan has made fiscal discipline the touchstone of his tenure; with Ryan at his side, Romney is doubling down on his perceived economic strengths. The choice promises a fierce debate over the size and role of government in America, and Democrats are relishing the chance to take on that fight. Paul Ryan: Good choice by Romney?
