DJs Drama, Ill Will, Rockstar, More Make Our Top DJs Of 2010

It was a great year for street albums, and Mixtape Daily salutes the street kings. By Jayson Rodriguez, with additional reporting by Hillary Crosley, Rahman Dukes, Steven Roberts and Richard Sancho DJ Drama, DJ Holiday and DJ Scream Photo: Getty Images/ MTV News The mixtape game took a shot to the heart a few years ago when DJ Drama’s office was raided by the feds. Artists increasingly opted to make mixtapes that were essentially albums, projects produced without help from DJs and comprised mostly of original material. But slowly Gangsta Grillz began populating blogs, the same way they used to populate the streets, and those sites served as the new Burkinas. In the last 12 months, the mixtape circuit has never been healthier — just look at Dram still putting out his trademark rap heat and getting his slow jam on, pushing collections by the likes of Chris Brown, among other R&B stars. DJ Teknikz helped Travis Porter ink a deal with Jive Records. And Bigga Rankin scored an exec position with Young Jeezy’s CTE. Then there’s DJ Holiday and DJ Scream: both spin doctors break acts like Bo Jackson snapped bats. Meanwhile, DJ Ill Will and DJ Rockstar have become nearly ubiquitous with their onslaught of street albums. Pay attention, as the Mixtape Daily team continues our year-end awards by saluting the Top DJs of 2010. Wax King: Bigga Rankin Bordering Blocks : Atlanta Street Credentials :

Stop the "flood" of corporate seeds in the agricultural reconstruction of Pakistan!

The flooding that submerged nearly a fifth of Pakistan starting in July this year displaced about 20 million people and killed nearly 2,000. This number of people whose property and livelihoods were destroyed surpassed the number of combined victims of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, 2005 Kashmir earthquake and the Haiti earthquake earlier this year. Without a doubt, it was one of Pakistan's worst floods ever. “The destruction isn't over yet. A big threat looms in the way the government is rebuilding agriculture, in partnership with big agribusiness companies, in the flood-stricken areas of Pakistan,” says Azra Sayeed of Roots for Equity, a Karachi-based grassroots NGO that works with small and landless peasants in the flooded areas. “A torrent of corporate hybrid seeds, and possibly GM seeds as some suspect, packaged with fertlisers, farm implements and production credit is streaming into the affected provinces in the name of agricultural reconstruction.” Free seeds? In October, a consignment of 2,000 bags of wheat seeds was dispatched to flood-hit farmers by the Mir Khalil-ur-Rahman Foundation (MKRF) and the Imran Khan Flood Relief Fund (IKRF). A scheme was launched to provide wheat seeds to farmers owning 25 acres of land in every flood-hit province without discrimination. Under the scheme, certified and good quality seeds were provided to farmers covering 150,000 acres of land. [1] Also since early November, the United States government has provided about US$62 million to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to expand an agriculture recovery program to the Province of Balochistan. The program includes provision of seed and fertilizer to flood-affected farmers, to help salvage the winter planting seasons and restore livelihoods for farmers in flood-affected areas. [2] Sindh Chief Minister, Syed Qaim Ali Shah, has said last month that the government's attention is focused on the rehabilitation of more than seven million flood-affected people and efforts are being made to give Rs100,000 (US$ 1,165) as well as seeds and fertilisers to each survivor family free of cost. [3] There are reports, however, that not all of this is free, as the seeds are being tied to micro-finance packages where fertilisers and services are only provided to small farmers through loans. The threat of contamination What the seeds are and where they come from are of deep concern. Currently they are being distributed in small white plastic bags with the monogram of UN World Food Programme. Unfortunately, there's very little public information available. And without an independent body monitoring the inflow of seeds to Pakistan, it's hard to rule out if some of the seeds and foodstuff being distributed are not GMOs or products of GMOs. With Bayer, BASF, Monsanto, Du Pont, Dow Chemical and Cargill, among the long list of donors to Pakistan's rehabilitation, the suspicion is high that these companies can use the situation to get their GM seeds on the ground and make contamination a done deal. Cargill is known for receiving huge subsidies from the US government to dump vast amounts of grains in poorer countries. It also processes soybean oil for Monsanto. Bayer Crop Science has a GM canola variety called Invigor, while Monsanto has the herbicide resistant Round-up Ready canola. On the other hand, BASF and Monsanto have a joint undertaking to develop GM wheat. Dow Chemical owns Mycogen which has a range of GM and hybrid seeds – maize, canola, soybeans, sorghum, and sunflower. In the Sindh province, sunflower seeds have been distributed with their source of origin unknown. Some Pakistani farmers are worried that seeds of GM canola may outcross to their local mustard varieties. Canola and mustard, both open-pollinated crops are from the same Brassica family, which also includes cabbage as distant relative. The possibility of GM contamination cannot be ruled out. “It's not just the seeds that are of concern here. It's the entire drive to transform Pakistan's agriculture into cash crop export production, controlled by a few big seed and agrochemical companies, at the expense of its own food security,” says Vlady Rivera of GRAIN, a small international non-profit organisation that works to support small farmers and social movements in their struggles for community-controlled and biodiversity-based food systems. “To take advantage of the post-flood situation to push that corporate agenda is simply perverse. What people normally see as seed aid on the surface is actually big business at the core.” A deal with Monsanto As part of its rehabilitation program, Pakistan's agriculture ministry entered a deal with Monsanto for a large-scale importation of its Bt Cotton seeds, despite strong opposition from local seed producers and farmers groups. The Seed Association of Pakistan (SAP) has warned the Punjab government to refrain from signing an agreement with Monsanto, believing this will “annihilate national seed companies, besides causing huge financial burden on the national treasury.” The group also believes that the importation of Bt cotton seed by the Pakistani government will cost the country millions of dollars in compensatory and royalty payments. Wall Street Quietly Creates a New Way to Profit From Homeowner Distress

Auctions allow private investors to acquire rights to collect overdue property taxes, levy escalating fees on homeowners, and foreclose on those who do not pay. Some auctions, like this one in Washington, D.C., take place in person. Others occur online, where bidders can buy property tax liens by the thousands. Credit: Emma Schwartz When Florida retiree Gladys Walker fell behind in paying taxes on her modest Pompano Beach home, she had no idea one of America’s biggest banks and a major Wall Street hedge fund engaged in frenzied bidding for the right to collect her debt—all $768.25 of it. “I just couldn’t come up with the money,” said Walker, 67, a former hotel worker who makes do on a monthly Social Security check. Barely more than a year after a taxpayer bailout of major financial institutions, Bank of America and the hedge fund, Fortress Investment Group, spotted a fresh money-making opportunity – collecting the tax debts of tens of thousands of people like Walker. The bank and hedge fund can add interest charges and fees, and they bundled the debts as securities for investors. In late May and early June, proxies for the two institutions quietly bought hundreds of millions of dollars in homeowners’ property tax debts in Florida by bidding at a series of online auctions held by county tax collectors. They didn’t use their names but donned multiple other identities, dominating the auctions and repeatedly bidding on the same parcels – in the case of Walker’s small home, more than 8,000 times. Then, in September, Bank of America’s securities division packaged $301 million worth of the tax liens it and Fortress had acquired into bonds pitched privately to major investors. The anticipated return – estimated at between 7 to 10 percent – is possible because buyers of tax debts can assess a panoply of interest charges and other fees. When the debt goes unpaid long enough, the liens buyer can seize properties through foreclosure. Because the bonds were sold privately, there’s no public record indicating who purchased them, the prices paid, or the anticipated return. Moody Investment Services spokesman Tom Lemmon said the type of offering, known as a tax lien securitization trust, is fairly uncommon. Bank of America, he added, may make additional offerings in future years. A Bank of America spokesman, while otherwise declining comment, said that the bank and Fortress had not acted together in bidding in the auctions. Bank of America spokesman William Halldin said by email: “Our bids were made independent of any other organization. Any suggestion that they weren’t independent is simply incorrect.” Fortress, which is headed by former Fannie Mae chief Daniel Mudd, had no comment. The Florida securities deal illustrates how financial institutions, including some beneficiaries of federal bailout dollars, are actively creating new ways to profit from the financial distress of homeowners. Acting as surrogate tax collectors, they can help local governments quickly and efficiently bolster their budgets by tens of millions of dollars and in some cases find new owners for dilapidated property. Miami-Dade County, for instance, took in more than $374 million in June 2009 from the sale of about 60,000 property tax liens. added by: toyotabedzrock

Elizabeth Edwards Laid to Rest in N.C. Funeral

For 75 minutes yesterday, Elizabeth Edwards, who died this week at age 61, was eulogized as smart, funny, authentic, outspoken and always optimistic. Above all, she was passionate and a fierce lover of her family. “She would do anything in the world to protect all of us, no matter the personal cost was to her,” said her daughter Cate Edwards , eulogizing Elizabeth. The late Elizabeth Edwards (1949-2010) . “She has been a light house to all of us. She’s always been that source of light to us. Every lesson she has taught us has become part of our ethic.” Her estranged husband, former Sen. John Edwards, joined more than 1,200 mourners at Edenton Street United Methodist Church in Edenton, N.C. The political wife, lawyer and author’s close friend Hargrave McElroy and former UNC Law School classmate Glenn Bergenfield also spoke Saturday. Unfortunately, the public memorial was not without controversy. A small group of protesters from the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kan., known for picketing military funerals, demonstrated near the church. On the other side of the street, reports The News Observer , stood a much larger group, holding signs with the optimistic words “hero” and “hope.” The wife of the two-time Democratic presidential candidate died at her Chapel Hill home Tuesday after battling cancer for the last six years. “Today we have lost the comfort of Elizabeth’s presence, but she remains the heart of this family,” the Edwards family said in a statement. Elizabeth separated from John in January after he acknowledged he fathered a child with Rielle Hunter , a videographer and campaign aide. May Elizabeth rest in peace.

Nicole Richie and Joel Madden: Married!

Joel Madden and Nicole Richie have made it official. The longtime partners and parents of two tied the knot Saturday in a lavish yet private ceremony at the Beverly Hills home of her father, Lionel Richie. While the details are being kept under wraps, we do know there was an elephant in the room … or at least outside of Lionel’s estate. Really, there was . Congratulations to the newlyweds! Nicole Richie walked down the aisle in a Marchesa gown that was custom made in NYC, with celebrity hairstyle guru Byron Williams doing his thing. Joel’s twin brother Benji Madden took care of best man duties, while Samantha Ronson served as a bridesmaid in the musically inclined wedding party. Her best friend Masha Gordon was the maid of honor, with the wedding party also including Joel and Nicole’s adorable children Harlow and Sparrow. Nicole’s former BFF / Simple Life mate Paris Hilton was not in attendance, however. Benji was probably grateful to miss out on that awkward reunion. Delivery trucks and other personnel swarmed Lionel’s house all week and security was super tight, with the street around the estate closed to traffic. As such, there’s a surprising lack of photos of the guests – Gwen Stefani, Gavin Rossdale, Kris Jenner and others among them – making appearances. Good for them, keeping it so private. Congratulations on pulling off that feat … and on the momentous occasion itself! Nice job Joel and Nicole !

Hundreds at Elizabeth Edwards’ funeral protest Westboro presence

Members of the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kan., known for picketing outside military funerals, brought a small group to picket near the funeral service for Elizabeth Edwards Saturday, but they were far outnumbered by a group that organized a counterprotest in support of “promoting proper respect for funerals.” As the Edwards funeral began, three adults and two children from the Westboro church were on one side of Edenton Street, holding signs denigrating Edwards. On the other side of the street, in front of the Justice Department building, several hundred counterprotesters gathered in the drizzle. Signs in the crowd said, “God loves Elizabeth Edwards,” and others, in pink, said simply, “Hope” and “Hero.” The crowd supporting Edwards sang Christmas carols, the National Anthem and “Lean on Me,” the Bill Withers classic. Other supporters circled the block in cars, playing country music as the crowd cheered. Some supporters brought American flag umbrellas to pass out to the crowd, and one man brought a poster-making kit. Among the Edwards supporters was Bob Krasnicka, who came from Wake Forest to help. “I'm sick of hearing about these people going to funerals and spreading their hate,” said Krasnicka, 48, referring to the Westboro protesters. Of Edwards, he said, “I know she has young children who don't need to be seeing this kind of hate.” Read more: http://www.mcclatchydc.com/2010/12/11/105139/hundreds-rally-at-elizabeth-edwards… added by: JanforGore

Ryan Gosling Calls ‘Blue Valentine’ A ‘Companion Piece’ To ‘The Notebook’

Actor says his new film is about ‘the nitty gritty of trying to stay in love.’ By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Ryan Gosling Photo: MTV News Ryan Gosling is set to appear on the big screen this month in a new film about love. Of course, while he might forever be remembered as the lovelorn Noah in “The Notebook,” he’s certainly weaving a different story about relationships in the darker “Blue Valentine.” So, does Gosling think fans of the sweeping Nicholas Sparks love story will find anything to relate to in this gritty, sexy new flick? “I think that ‘Blue Valentine’ is a nice companion piece to ‘The Notebook,’ because I feel like both are true,” he told MTV News. “That they’re both possible, and the truth is somewhere in the middle. But I feel like ‘Blue Valentine’ kind of picks up where ‘The Notebook’ leaves off.” While “The Notebook” deals with the courtship of two people who are head-over-heels for each other, “Blue Valentine” looks deeper at what happens after two people think they’ve gotten their happy ending. “There’s a huge period of time which isn’t in [‘The Notebook’]: The practical, day-to-day living with one another isn’t dealt with in that film,” he explained. “I would meet people when I did ‘The Notebook’ who would come up to me on the street and say, ‘That happened to me; that’s my parents story,’ because these people are saying that’s not realistic love, doesn’t really happen for people like that. “That’s not true, because I’ve met so many people that told me that that’s their story or their parents’ story,” he continued. “But I’ve also talked to a lot of people now that feel like this film is more about what it’s like the day to day, the nitty gritty of trying to stay in love.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . Republicans Move to Block Ron Paul from Monetary Policy Subcommittee Chair

Ron Paul will not head up the House’s monetary policy subcommittee if John Boehner has anything to say about it. “Five GOP leadership aides, speaking anonymously because a decision isn’t final, say incoming House Speaker John Boehner has discussed ways to prevent Paul from becoming chairman or to keep him on a tight leash if he does,” reports Bloomberg. “If Boehner, who will help determine who gets to chair subcommittees as early as Dec. 8, rejects Paul, he may have to contend with thousands of grassroots supporters and dozens of younger lawmakers who see Paul as a hero.” Boehner and the establishment Republicans rode to victory last month on the shoulders of the Tea Party movement. Prior to the election, Tea Party activists in Maine, Colorado, and Utah focused on abolishing the Federal Reserve. Some predicted that if Republicans were to sweep the House they would become much more confrontational with the Federal Reserve. “The popularity of Tea Party candidates in U.S. elections could spell renewed efforts to curtail the power and independence of the Federal Reserve, which has been cast as an emblem of big government overreach,” Reuters reported in late October. Many establishment Republicans agree with senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina who insists the Tea Party and its vision of less government has no long-term vision or prospects for political viability. Instead of dismantling the Federal Reserve, establishment Republicans have called for reforming the private bankster cartel masquerading as a government agency supposedly answerable to the American people. On Tuesday, Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn. and Rep. Mike Pence, R-Ind. called for Congress to change the Fed’s “dual mandate” now requiring it to promote both price stability and full employment and instead focus on keeping inflation low and not worrying about reducing unemployment. “It is time that we work to clarify the mandate of the Federal Reserve,” said Corker, a member of the Senate Finance Committee, in a statement announcing his support for the change. “Providing our central bank with a clear and explicit focus on keeping inflation low will serve America better than the broader mandate approach we have today,” the National Journalreports. Corker and Pence proffered their milquetoast bill after it was revealed the Fed gave a big chunk of its multi-trillion dollar Wall Street bailout to foreign banksters and transnational corporations. “We now know that the Fed loaned trillions of dollars at zero or near-zero interest rates not only to the largest financial institutions in the country, but also to many of our largest corporations — including GE, McDonalds and Verizon,” said an outraged Bernie Sanders, the socialist senator from Vermont. “Perhaps most surprising is the huge sum that went to bail out foreign private banks and corporations, including two European megabanks — Deutsche Bank and Credit Suisse,” he said. “As a result of this disclosure, other members of Congress and I will be taking a very extensive look at all aspects of how the Federal Reserve functions.” Bernie Sanders and Ron Paul may take a serious look at the Fed. But we shouldn’t expect the rest of Congress to support an effort to cut out the cancer that plagues the economy. In July, Paul’s Federal Reserve Transparency Act that would have eliminated restrictions on GAO audits of the Fed and open its operations to congressional oversight was defeated. “Since its inception, the Federal Reserve has always operated in the shadows, without sufficient scrutiny or oversight, while Congress has kept its hands off and its eyes closed,” Ron Paul wrote after language from his bill failed to make it into a conference report on the so-called financial reform bill (that ultimately gave the Fed more power, not less). “The Federal Reserve has presided over the near-complete destruction of the United States dollar. Since 1913 the dollar has lost over 95% of its purchasing power, aided and abetted by the Federal Reserve’s loose monetary policy. The Federal Reserve Transparency Act would achieve much-needed transparency of the Federal Reserve System.” Now that Republicans are in charge of the House, they join the Democrats and make sure the Federal Reserve continues to operate in the shadows and remains unanswerable to the American people. http://kommoncents.blogspot.com/2010/12/why-does-boehner-not-want-ron-paul-as.ht… added by: Dagum
