Doctor Opens First Black Woman-Owned Veterinary Clinic In Cleveland

Excerpt from:

B lack women are making historic moves in the realm of entrepreneurship. According to Atlanta Black Star , Dr. Venaya Jones recently opened the first veterinary clinic in Cleveland to be owned and operated by an African American woman. The facility offers a wide spectrum of services including diagnostic exams, dermatology, wellness visits, and hospice care. Dr. Jones—who discovered her passion for helping animals at a young age—says she wants to utilize the Cleveland Veterinary Clinic as an avenue to push animal health care forward and establish the clinic as a go-to veterinary facility in Cleveland. “I feel like it’s a great opportunity here in Cleveland, especially there being no other vet hospitals here,” she said in a statement. “There are tons of people with pets, we’re in the health tech corridor. I mean, this is where quality medicine is discovered and done, and I want to be a part of that.” For the Western University College of Veterinary Medicine graduate, opening up the Cleveland Veterinary Clinic was about more than her passion for animal health care; its about representation. Dr. Jones hopes her journey will inspire Black youth to pursue careers in veterinary medicine. She mentors youth and other women of color who are interested in stepping into the field. “I’m hoping to uplift the community both physically and emotionally, health wise by taking care of their pets, but … also bringing a sense of pride and a sense of accomplishment,” she said. “I want to be able to show other [young minorities] that they can do it, anything that they dream of, because here is a Black woman that’s come into this community and made it happen.” Black entrepreneurs are breaking barriers in the medical field. Earlier this year a group of African American medical professionals joined forces to open up Chicago’s only Black-owned urgent care facility . Matt Roloff Breaks Silence on Ex-Wife’s Engagement

Let no one ever say that divorce has to be messy. Or ugly. Or really disagreeable at all. Don’t believe us? Just ask Amy Roloff and Matt Roloff. Not only did these two split after nearly 27 years of marriage and four kids, but they continued to work together on the TLC reality show Little People, Big World. Moreover, they actually continued to live on the same property until very recently, residing just 100 yards or so away from each other on their mutually-owned farm in Oregon. Just how well do these exes get along? Consider the following: Amy just got engaged last week to boyfriend Chris Marek — and Matt has now become the first family member to congratulate her in public! The Roloff patriarch did so in sort of a subtle way, but he definitely did so nonethless. “My buddy Ty and I got together for our regular Saturday morning breakfast today,” Matt as a caption to a photo he shared of himself and his friend over the weekend, adding simply: “He doesn’t do social media … so I filled him in on Amy’s exciting engagement news. Congratulations to Amy and Chris!!” There you have it, folks. We have no doubt that Amy’s kids, all of whom welcomed Marek into their lives years ago, are thrilled for their mother. But, as far as we know, none of them have said anything about the engagement on social media just yet. Marek popped the question a few days ago, shortly after Amy turned 55 years old. “I’m excited, I’m so surprised, I’m thrilled!” Amy told People Magazine of the engagement, adding to the publication: “I never in a million years thought I’d be getting married again, but I also hoped for it! Now that it’s happening, I couldn’t be happier or more excited.” She and Chris have been dating for almost three years and fans around the globe had been hoping/anticipating an engagement announcement could be forthcoming. Even Marek, who has rarely spoken to the press during his courtship of Roloff, commented on the major development after Amy agreed to marry him. “I was very nervous! It had to be a heart shaped diamond because I knew that’s what Amy wanted,” he said. Amy has since shown off her engagement ring ( it’s gorgeous!!!!! ) on Instagram and included with the snapshot a caption that reads: I was so surprised when Chris asked me to marry him. I said YES. I couldn’t be happier and so looking forward to this new part of our life journey together. I’m blessed. Love you Chris. I love us. No word yet on a wedding date or location or anything. But the couple has plenty of time. As for Amy and Matt? They’ve been nothing but respectful of each other over the years, with the notable exception of Amy having come out with a very personal memoir this summer. In one section, she writes in detail about her split from Matt and states firmly that he cheated on her back in the day with his current girlfriend, Caryn Chandler. In an emotional sense, at the very least. “We had someone that worked for us for a very long time, on our farm,” Amy writes of Chandler in the book, adding: “And I believe – this is all from my perspective – that there was more than just friends going on. And I think that evolved to a point where that got in the way of our marriage as well.” Yikes . And yet: isn’t it nice to see Matt send Amy his best wishes, even in the wake of this controversial release and revelation? View Slideshow: Matt Roloff Fires Back at Amy: I’m Better Than You Are!

Hailey Baldwin Just Liked A Pic Of Selena Gomez On Instagram & We’re Shook!

Hailey Baldwin, we see you girl! The 22-year-old model quietly “liked” a photo of Selena Gomez last night on Instagram, out of nowhere, and fans don’t know what to think. Although the two are not exactly BFFs , because, well, Hailey married Selena’s on-and-off ex-boyfriend last year, it looks like time may have finally healed all wounds? Ok, it’s hard to know what’s really going on here with just the smallest amount of Instagram activity, but anything is possible!  And when you look further into the details of this story, it seems as though Hailey is totally offering up an olive branch.  Besides Justin Bieber, who the girls both um, have in common, they also share best friend Raquelle Stevens. Raquelle posted a cute photo on September 23 to celebrate the launch of her new Vodcast, Giving Back Generation , which featured friends Courtney Lopez, Ashley Cook, and yep, Selena.  The three women were Raquelle’s guests for her very first episode, and after the taping, she took to IG to promote the release.  “On this episode we talk about what giving looks like through friendship,” Raquelle’s caption read.  “This episode is particularly special to me as Courtney, Sel, and Ashley have been my friends all through my 20’s. We talk about what it means to support each other, forgive, and grow together.”  “Look forward to hearing your feedback & hope it leaves you encouraged,” she wrote.  Hailey liked the pic to support her friend, but Selena fans couldn’t help but notice the gesture.  In the show, Stevens emphasized the importance of women not competing with one another and supporting each other instead.  “When you’re in your lane, no one else is you,” Stevens said. SO basically, Hailey showed her support on the most appropriate of photos, making it very clear that she is here for that friendship message. And we’re crying it’s fine.  Ok, I know that these two will probably never hang out and eat ice cream together, but still, the gesture is inspiring.  And even better, it was intentional. Hailey’s “like” is still present on the post, so we’re pretty sure that this time she actually meant to leave it, unlike her last run-in with Gomez on social media. Remember last year when she accidentally followed a Selena Gomez fan account?  And then she DM’d the owner saying she was sorry for accidentally following the account? … yeah, it was very uncomfy. But years before any of this love triangle drama went down, Hailey was actually a huge Selenator.  Oh No They Didn’t  dug up some old tweets made by Baldwin where she gushed about Gomez (and yes, even her relationship with Justin Biber, believe it or not.)  In one tweet Baldwin said, “I’m for sure 100% team #Jelena.” Boy, how times have changed. Now, Hailey and Justin are happily married and well, life goes on.  Who knows, maybe Selena will return the love to Hailey one day?   “Never Say Never” ,  but I wouldn’t hold your breath.  View Slideshow: Justin Bieber: A Chronological List of 31 Women Who Slept With Him For Some Reason

Mike Johnson: I Was in Secret Talks to Be The Bachelor, and I Wanted it BAD, But …

Time and time again, interviews with Mike Johnson showed the charmter Bachelorette alum gently set aside rumors that he was in talks with ABC. He was — and is — a fan-favorite to be the next leading man, even though Peter Weber is the Bachelor . Now, Mike reveals that he was in talks, that he did want the role, and shares the extremely noble reason why he was hyped for it. Mike Johnson had already weighed in a little on Peter’s selection — he’s a big fan! But on The Bachelor Happy Hour with Rachel & Ali  podcast, he elaborates upon how much he would have liked it to have been him. “I was 100% in talks to be the next Bachelor,” Mike reveals for the first time, having previously claimed to have not been in talks. He admits that, because of this deception, “People probably didn’t think I was considered to be the Bachelor.” Mike explains that he denied being in talks “because I was trying to be so respectful of the crew at Bachelor world.” “And,” he reasons. “I didn’t want to speak about it.” “Even when I went on TV. I thought that was being extremely respectful and a gentlemen of me to the Bachelor world,” Mike says. Oh, he absolutely was. “And Peter didn’t do those interviews,” he acknowledges. “So he didn’t have to go through that.” “I 100% wanted to be the Bachelor,” Mike emphasizes. And he tells th eworld exactly why. He explains: “Reasons being: One, I do want to find a wife.” Mike then adds: “Two, it was bigger than me and I wanted to represent for all people of color.” “Talking about people of color,” Mike continues, pointing out that the black community is not the only minority underrepresented on the show.  Having more than twenty seasons but zero black men isn’t a coincidence, but there’s more to it than anti-blackness. “They need to have an Asian Bachelor, they need to have an Indian Bachelor,” he correctly expressed. Mike added: “They need to have other people outside of just black and white.” He also goes into detail about how far along, how prepared, he was. “I had a list of — a Word document — of the type of woman I wanted, what I was scared of, what I wasn’t scared of,” Mike reveals. Mike makes it clear that, as important as representation is, he’s not bitter. “They chose the right person for what they want,” Mike expresses. “And there’s nothing wrong with that at all,” he emphasizes. Mike admits: “When I first found out, I’m not gonna lie, I was sad. I was annoyed when I very first found out.” “But then by the end of the night, I wasn’t annoyed no more,” he shares. Mike explains: “because I was appreciative and thankful that they told me ‘no’ right then and there, because now I could focus on myself.” We can understand why he would have felt annoyed. Not only did ABC and producers skip over yet another black candidate for leading man, but Mike must have felt strung along. Hopefully, his date with Demi Lovato soothed some of that hurt. Unfortunately, as long as a chunk of Bachelor fans decide to tune out when the lead is black — as they did in Rachel’s season — producers may still make the same choices. App Focused On Black Maternal Health Receives $200K Grant

The rest is here:

T he maternal mortality crisis continues to disproportionately affect Black women. According to new research released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention , for women over the age of 30, Black women are four to five times more likely to die in pregnancy and childbirth. Entrepreneur Kimberly Seals Allers is aiming to reverse this alarming trend through her app Irth and she recently received $200,000 in funding to push her efforts forward, Black News reported. New App to Help Save Pregnant Black Women and Their Babies Gets $200K in Funding https://t.co/FCktPt7ZjJ pic.twitter.com/d3EUFpR0sw — Black News (@BlackNews) September 5, 2019 The app was designed to combat racial bias in the healthcare space; especially for Black moms who are expecting. The digital platform features reviews and ratings of health facilities and healthcare providers so that individuals can make informed decisions when it comes to seeking the best care during their pregnancy journey. The grant was donated by the Tara Health Foundation which focuses on the well-being of women and girls. Seals Allers—a notable author and journalist—says that her personal experiences inspired her to create Irth. After enduring racial bias at the hospital where she delivered her child—a facility that her white friends praised—she saw first-hand how Black mothers are often mistreated. “At that time of my life, I was on student insurance and I was not yet married. Despite my career and academic accomplishments, I was treated like an unwed black woman with basic insurance. I lived that. It was clear to me that not all people experience the same place the same way,” Seals Allers said in a statement. Several individuals and organizations have stepped up to back platforms that are focused on addressing issues surrounding maternal health. Tennis star Serena Williams recently invested in the maternal healthcare startup Mahmee which provides expecting parents with a comprehensive dashboard that tracks the health of the mother and child. Parents can also utilize the platform for educational resources. Black Women Entrepreneurs Pay Off Debt For 30 Students At Clark Atlanta University

Follow this link:

T wo Black women entrepreneurs paid it forward by giving back to students in need at their alma mater. Pinky Cole , the creator of the plant-based burger restaurant Slutty Vegan, and Harlem Hops owner Stacey Lee —both alums of Clark Atlanta University—helped 30 seniors who attend the historically Black college pay off their debt, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. These two women went back to their alma mater and asked for a list of seniors who wouldn’t be able to graduate due to outstanding balances. Then they partnered to clear them. https://t.co/UmdvX9MfAp — #becauseofthemwecan (@Becauseofthem) September 12, 2019 Lee, who founded Harlem’s first-ever Black-owned beer bar, was determined to find a way to assist students who are struggling with the cost of tuition. She contacted Cole to explore ways they could join forces and eliminate financial burdens for students so they’d be able to walk across the graduation stage. Cognizant of how the student debt crisis has hit HBCUs the hardest, the women were motivated to utilize their resources to make a difference in the lives of students of color. Cole and Lee—who are members of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated—connected with the school and asked for a list of seniors who needed to pay off debt so they would be able to graduate. They randomly chose 30 students to help and surprised them on campus to let them know that their outstanding balances have been handled. “God has been so good to us both. It just felt right,” Cold told Because of Them We Can . “Growing up in a single-family household, and being the first to go to college, I know what it feels like to not know where the money is coming from. But there were people who believed in me despite my circumstances and I wanted to be that person for someone else.” Since the inception of her fast-growing business, which has evolved into a staple in Atlanta, she has donated over $100,000 towards the education of college students in need. Entrepreneurs are stepping up to help students of different ages tackle their debt. In June, a Black-owned barbershop in North Carolina raised money to help high school seniors pay off their debt so they would be able to graduate. Javi Marroquin & Lauren Comeau: We’re Officially Back Together!

Well, that didn’t take long. Just weeks after she caught Javi Marroquin cheating on her in her own home, Lauren Comeau seems ready to forgive and forget. Earlier this month, we reported that Lauren had moved back in with Javi . (Understandably, she retreated to her home state of Maine after catching her fiance banging one of his CrossFit students in their bathroom.) Now, the couple has taken another step toward reconciliation by making their relationship Instagram official. Javi posted the pic below on Instagram this week. At first glance, it may seem to be nothing more than a precious moment featuring his 1-year-old son witn Lauren. But on closer inspection, you’ll notice that those are Lauren’s hands helping little Eli with his first steps. Javi captioned the pic, “Cherish these moments.” Clearly, he believes there are some moments in life during which relationship strife and other stressors must be set aside so that one can be fully present in the moment. Javi probably takes a similar view of illicit bathroom assignations, but that’s a conversation for another time. Anyway, as much as Teen Mom 2 fans might have preferred that Javi finally be held accountable for his actions, it seems he’s been let off the hook yet again. “Lauren is back home,” a source confirmed to Radar. “They are trying to work on things.” Judging by her Instrgam page, it seems that Lauren has been back in Dover for at least two weeks, meaning she was very quick to give Javi a second chance. However, many fans have pointed out that she’s still not wearing her engagement ring, as evidenced by the photo above. Obviously, this is not the first time that Marroquin has been unfaithful. He allegedly cheated on Kailyn Lowry numerous times during their brief marriage. And yet, the father of two keeps worming his way back into the good graces of the women in his life. How is this possible? Well, it seems the phenomenon is at least partially due to the fact that Javi has mastered the art of the schmaltzy, melodramatic apology. “Lauren, I’m sorry for my mistakes, I’m sorry I broke your heart, I’m sorry I disrespected you,” he wrote in an open letter posted to his Instagram page shortly after his latest cheating scandal went public. “I’m sorry I took you for granted. I could say sorry for a million other things but I’m sorry will never be enough,” Marroquin continued. “I will do everything in my power to become a better man and hopefully one day you can forgive me,” he added. “I’ll do anything to have you home.” Some would argue that he should have worked on that “becoming a better man” business after the last time he got caught cheating, but we digress. Elsewhere in the letter, Javi turned his attention to his two young sons: “I failed you as a father and failed at my attempt to show you both what it is to be a man,” he wrote. “I promise you both my actions will not reflect on how you will treat women, let alone the one you love.” It may not seem like Javi has been the greatest role model to his sons, but he may be useful as an example of what not to do: Don’t cheat on your fiance; don’t make private matters public, and — most importantly — never get into CrossFit. It’s basically Scientology for fitness bros.

Women’s March Did Not Cut Ties With Tamika Mallory. Here’s The Real Story

Source: Earl Gibson III / Getty On Monday, The Washington Post reported that the Women’s March cut ties with three of its founding members —  Tamika Mallory, Bob Bland,  and  Linda Sarsour — and replaced them by electing three new members of the board as directors. That information, however, was not accurate. NewsOne recently obtained the Women’s March by-laws and they show that Bland, Mallory and Sarsour were serving two-year terms as directors. Those terms have expired, which means, by rule, at least three new directors had to be elected. However, according to the by-laws, one of those directors must be one of the co-chairs of the 2017 Women’s March on Washington and the “director shall be nominated by the Founding Co-Chairs Committee.” This is why Carmen Perez , the fourth founding member who is also on the new board, maintains her position since she was one of the co-chairs of the 2017 march. According to the by-laws, “Any director may resign at any time by giving written notice to a Co-President or Secretary of the Corporation.” The by-laws also state that “Any director may be removed, with cause, by a vote of a majority of the members or by a vote of a majority of the entire Board.” Contrary to mainstream reporting , Mallory, Bland and Sarsour did not step down or cut ties with the Women’s March because of past controversy such as the anti-Semitism accusations aimed at the group. Instead their terms as directors merely expired and they are liable to return to official positions in the future. Though past controversies could have been brought up when discussing transitions, there is no proof so far that this is the case. According to the by-laws, “the directors shall be elected every two years at a meeting of members, and each shall continue in office until her or his successor shall have been duly elected and qualified, or until her or his death, resignation or removal.” Meanwhile, the new 17-member board is made up of diverse activists, including a former legislator, a transgender organizer, two religious leaders and a member of the Oglala tribe of the Lakota nation. The founding board members spent a little over two years finding new members who can serve on the board for the next two years. They recruited a committee to help select the applications after an open call was announced in March. Women’s March wrote in a tweet on Monday, “We couldn’t be more excited to announce our new board who will continue moving Women’s March forward.” We’ve cultivated the leadership of grassroots organizers across the country to make Women’s March a leaderful movement, and now we’re growing. We couldn’t be more excited to announce our new board who will continue moving Women’s March forward. https://t.co/WYvXyqBUhT pic.twitter.com/6yDFK5anuj — Women's March (@womensmarch) September 16, 2019

Andre 3000 May Be Releasing New Music Soon?

Outkast fans, rejoice! It appears that legendary lyricist and original ATLien Andre 3000 may be finally releasing a new album. In an interview on Friday (Sept. 13) with  Home Grown Radio  on Real 92.3, rhyme-spitter Thurz discussed his upcoming project and how he began working with Dr. Dre in the studio. During the conversation, when asked if there’s been an artist that made him star-struck while making music in the studio, Thurz mentioned Andre 3000—before revealing that Three Stacks has not only been recording music but has enough material to release a full album. “Is he doing music?” asked the show’s co-host DJ HED. “He’s got an album,” Thurz replied. After realizing he may have leaked confidential information, Thurz quickly tries to back peddle stating that he doesn’t know if what he heard was a full album, before admitting the music sounded too great not to be. “He played a lot of ideas that sound like an album to me so I’m just jumping to conclusions,” Thurz continued. “He played a lot of cool ideas…yeah, he’s making music. In other Outkast news, the duo was recently trending after on air personality Yes Julz compared Dreamville’s EarthGang to the legends , by seemingly singling out Andre 3000 over Big Boi when she tweeted, “Earthgang is like the OutKast of this generation only with two Andre’s. I love OutKast. I love bigboi. I grew up on them. I love Earthgang. I simply feel that they both favor Andre a bit more stylistically. I was simply giving a complement. Twenty-five years. We won everything and done everything in music.” Check out Thurz’s full interview below.

Issa Rae Is Reportedly Producing a ‘Set It Off’ Remake

Source: Aaron J. Thornton / Getty I ssa Rae has started the early stages of a remake for the 1996 classic film Set It Off. According to Variety , Issa will be producing the movie. She may even have a role in the film. Set It Off tells the story of four friends who end up robbing a series of different banks amid frustration over their low paying jobs. This was the film that would serve as the launching pad for director F. Gary Gray’s now illustrious career. Set It Off followed the hit movie Friday , which also was very well received at the time of its’ release. The four women who played in Set It Off — Jada Pinkett Smith, Queen Latifah, Vivica A. Fox, and Kimberly Elise — were essentially the first women in film to play a character that exhibited as much depth as male stars in similar films. Issa Rae, who served as co-creator and executive producer for Insecure , has familiarity acting in a role where a group of friends are required to navigate through the hardships of life. Positioned to make her presence felt on the big screen, HBO programming chief Casey Bloys tried to make it happen for Issa. “Issa became a big movie star,” Bloys explained. “We’re not the first place to deal with this, but when you’re in business with very creative and talented people, there’s a lot more opportunities for people to do things.”
