Justin Bieber MTV Special Will Be A ‘TRL’ Throwback!

‘We have some surprises,’ manager Scooter Braun teases about ‘Bieber Live’ airing tonight at 7:30 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: Peter Wafzig/ Getty Images If you’re wondering what to expect from Tuesday night’s (June 19) MTV special, “Bieber Live,” you need only think back to the days of “Total Request Live.” Justin Bieber ‘s manager, Scooter Braun, has fond memories of the biggest stars visiting “TRL” to promote their latest record or movie back in the late 1990s and early 2000s, and he wanted to capture some of that flavor tonight’s show, airing at 7:30 p.m. ET/PT on MTV. Bieber is set to sit down with host Sway Calloway and some of his most devoted Beliebers as they celebrate the release of his brand-new album, Believe. And if Bieber talking about his latest LP isn’t enough, know that he’ll also be performing! Braun is keeping the details about the special top secret, but did have a little tease for fans. “So, he’s gonna come in, he’s gonna do ‘Boyfriend’ and he’s probably gonna do something broken-down acoustic — a new version of one of the songs — and we have some surprises,” Scooter told us. “And we’re gonna have some fun. We want to bring it back to the old ‘TRL’ [days]. When we caught up with him last Friday, Braun also opened up about the conversations he had with Bieber as the teen star began recording tracks for his highly anticipated release. He noted that the album’s sound reflects more than just a transition: It shows the 18-year-old’s evolution. “I think a lot of times with big superstars they don’t always deliver on that big album,” he said. “They don’t meet the expectation … sometimes it’s because they’re [already] superstars. Maybe they think they know it all and they don’t want to listen to anyone else’s input, and sometimes that works and sometimes that doesn’t. “He’s growing and so is his music,” Braun later added . “And I don’t think he’s transitioning and losing any fans. I think he’s just growing. We always study Michael Jackson, and the thing I loved about his career is he never lost that 2-year-old that bounced to his music. But at the same time, you’d go to a club and there were adults bouncing also. And I think that’s what we want to do with Justin.” Don’t miss “Bieber Live” tonight at 7:30 p.m. ET/PT on MTV! John Edwards: In Love With Rielle Hunter?

John Edwards has never spoken publicly about his feelings for Rielle Hunter , but thanks to his federal corruption trial, plenty of other people are. His former speechwriter, Wendy Button, testified Tuesday. She said Edwards admitted he loved Hunter, though the relationship was “complicated.” Edwards spoke about Hunter when answering mock questions as he practiced what he would say when admitting he fathered Rielle’s love child. “Do you love Rielle?” Button testified she asked Edwards. With Button playing the role of a reporter, the two-time presidential hopeful said, “Yes, it’s complicated.” This was July 2009, according to Button. “Do you still see her?” Button also asked. “‘Yes, she’s the mother of my child,'” Button says John replied. “Is the affair still going on?” she asked. “You’re not entitled to all the details,” Edwards answered . Those questions are ones Edwards, 58, could be asked again if he takes the stand at his trial. The former U.S. Senator is charged with covering up the affair and love child with the help of illegal campaign contributions from wealthy donors. The packed courtroom was riveted as Button took the stand about her conversations with Edwards in July of 2009, when she offered to help him draft a statement admitting he fathered Hunter’s daughter, Frances Quinn, now 4. Last month, Edwards’ former aide Andrew Young said when the politician learned Hunter was pregnant, he reacted by saying “She’s a ‘ crazy slut .'” Young testified that Edwards said, “There’s a one-in-three chance [the child] was his.” John, who was married to the terminally ill Elizabeth Edwards at the time, vehemently denied, but later confirmed his paternity of the child. His adult daughter, Cate Edwards , was so upset by some of the revelations at his trial that she walked out in tears at one point last week.

Bullhead or Bust: How Drafthouse Films Went From From 0 to Oscar in 2 Years Flat

New to the distribution arena, Alamo Drafthouse co-founder Tim League became enamored of a small Belgian crime drama called Bullhead at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival. Less than a year later, he and his Drafthouse Films operation have an Oscar contender on their hands. Not too shabby for a company younger than the Obama administration. Bullhead , from first-time feature director Michaël R. Roskam, centers on a contemptuous, troubled cattle farmer who is dragged into Belgium’s bovine hormone mafia underworld. Lead actor Matthias Schoenaerts (pictured above) packed on 60 pounds of muscle for the complex, acclaimed role. The film made such an impression at Cannes that League lobbied “fiercely” to include it in the lineup for his venue’s annual Fantastic Fest, despite its wide perception among viewers and industry alike as a sci-fi/horror/Asian genre showcase. “We had to really convince them to show it at the festival,” League told Movieline in a recent interview. “And it was after the festival and the great response that it had from our audience that we decided we wanted to make an offer on it for the label.” “The label,” of course, is Drafthouse Films, a venture that grew out of the festival, which itself had been an evolution from programming the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema — the Austin-based theater chain that League co-founded with his wife, Karrie, in 1997. The impresario saw distribution as a natural next step, commencing in 2010 with director Chris Morris’s suicide-bomber satire Four Lions . “We realized that a lot of these films really didn’t have an opportunity to find a great home for U.S. distribution,” League said. “So we thought we were building an audience with the festival and we might as well build a label to walk alongside it with the same sensibilities.” (Incidentally, Four Lions had closed Austin’s flagship film fest, South by Southwest, six months earlier.) For its second release, the distributor gave Bullhead a U.S. home and entered the Foreign-Language Oscar race in one fell swoop. “We really loved Bullhead , and there was just a strange set of circumstances that fell into place where we expressed our interest, and before we had the contract done it was Belgium’s official entry to the Academy Awards, which kick-started the process,” League said. “But even still, we knew we were a long shot. It’s been wild to see it fall into place.” The Drafthouse team was at Sundance last month when the good news came through. “We were watching the announcement live on television,” League said. “And we got the nomination, and we celebrated and had a glass of champagne, then everybody just hunkered down at their computers for about five hours and set a lot of wheels in motion. We had to put the trailer together, the poster together, the ad campaign. We had to hire a bunch of folks to help us out with the process.” Those hires were made from preparations the team had already done for the film’s distribution, but the nomination sped up the process. Drafthouse Films plans to release six films a year theatrically and on VOD, but it isn’t following a set model each time. It has three films planned for this year so far: Bullhead , the subversive comedy Clown and SXSW favorite The FP . Meanwhile, League admits Bullhead is an underdog at the Oscars — particularly against A Separation , the Golden Globe-winning Iranian film that’s also up for best screenplay. Nevertheless, he says, it’s a category that has seen upsets and surprises. The Drafthouse team will be in Los Angeles to support the film on Feb. 26, throwing a Bullhead party on Oscar night. “Win or lose, we’re super happy to be a part of it,” League said. Bullhead will be released in New York, Los Angeles and Austin on Feb. 17, with further expansion to come ahead of the Oscars.

Berlinale Dispatch: What’s Black & White, Nearly Silent, and Dreamy All Over? (Hint: Not What You Think)

Portuguese director Miguel Gomes’s inventive, playful black-and-white Tabu — part drama, part romance, part malaria-induced fever dream — has turned out to be a favorite among critics at the Berlinale this week, alongside Christian Petzold’s Barbara , and it’s not hard to see why. Tabu was one of the few movies here to be heralded by a ripple of excitement — it seemed to be the one competition film everyone was curious to see. In the movie’s first section — despite an intriguing reference to a “sad and melancholic crocodile” — I feared the buzz would amount to nothing. And what if this crocodile never actually appeared? I wasn’t leaving without my crocodile, I decided, and luckily, I wasn’t disappointed. Gomes — who previously directed The Portuguese Nun and Our Beloved Month of August — used to be a film critic, and you know how those people are: They love their movie references, and Gomes uses plenty. (The film’s title itself is a nod to F.W. Murnau’s movie of the same name.) But he manages to avoid coming off as either a show-off or know-it-all, particularly in the movie’s second section. The first chapter deals with a mysterious elderly Portuguese woman named Aurora (Laura Soveral), whose mind appears to be disintegrating and who is convinced her housekeeper (Isabel Cardoso) is working black magic on her. She begs her neighbor, Pilar (Teresa Madruga), for help. It’s only after Aurora dies, and Pilar seeks out the man who used to be her lover, that the movie truly springs to life: The opening section is clearly intended to be an extended prologue, a means of whetting our appetite for what’s to come. In part two, we meet the young Aurora (played by Ana Moreira), a big-game hunter who, like good old Isak Dinesen before her, has a farm in Africa. Aurora is beautiful, headstrong, possibly emotionally unstable. She’s also a crackerjack markswoman who always gets her prey, sacking big game right and left. That includes menfolk: She’s married to a staid, successful businessman who doesn’t give her the attention she needs. It’s no surprise when she falls into the arms of Ventura (Carloto Cotta), a John Gilbert lookalike who plays in a local band — it specializes in hyper-romantic Phil Spector covers — and who also has some romantic complications of his own, in the form of a lover named Mario (Manuel Mesquita). The second half of Tabu is mostly silent. There’s sound, in the form of birds or crickets or rustling leaves, but all the dialogue of the story remains unheard and implied: The actors move their lips, but no words come out, and the effect is surprisingly intimate, like being keyed in to a secret language between lovers. We know what’s happening, and what’s going on in the characters’ heads, thanks to a voiceover narration provided by the old-man version of Ventura (Henrique Espirito Santo), as he reflects on his obsessive and marvelously melodramatic relationship with the young Aurora. Did I mention that by the time she and Ventura get together, she’s already pregnant with her husband’s child? Gomes piles one complication on top of another, but the effect is poetic rather than jumbled. I’ve been hearing people comparing Tabu to The Artist , couching it as a more art-housey version of that picture. There are similarities, but each film exists in its own distinct and imaginatively realized world. Gomes’s is dreamier, more impressionistic — at times, in the first section, the conversations between the characters spin out in oblique, off-kilter loops, as if they’d been invented by a less-flamboyant, less-kooky Almodovar. Gomes’s style here is winsome and affectionate; at times, it’s a little too arch and self-aware. But the picture’s satiny imagery, rendered in black, white and every glorious gradation in between, is so lovely that that hardly matters. The two lovers, Aurora and Ventura, lounge by a reflecting pool, glasses of lemonade on a tray between them, as that aforementioned crocodile — at this point, a mere babe — skims through the water like a silent witness to all that’s passing between them. Now we know why he’s sad and melancholic: He’s the croc who knew too much. But at least he’s been lucky enough to swim through this romantic dream of a movie. Grammys Pay ‘Respect’ To Whitney Houston, LL Cool J Says

‘It affects the tone overall,’ host tells MTV News on the red carpet. By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Sway Calloway Whitney Houston Photo: FilmMagic Whitney Houston is set to be honored at the 2012 Grammy Awards on Sunday night, when Jennifer Hudson and Chaka Kahn take the stage to pay tribute to the fallen star, who died suddenly and tragically Saturday in Los Angeles. MTV News had the pleasure of speaking to Grammys host LL Cool J on the red carpet , and he shed some light on the conversations that went down before Sunday’s big show as producers scrambled to fit a tribute to the star into the show. “We were up all night, and we just wanted to figure out [and] show Whitney Houston the love, the appreciation, the love, the respect she deserves based on her as a human being and the career that she had and give her that love and make sure that people know we care,” LL explained. “And we are connected to her in that way.” But LL noted that while Houston deserves love at the show, producers also want to make sure that every artist involved with Sunday’s broadcast gets the attention they deserve as well. “At the same time, there are so many other artists here that are nominated. This is a new Grammy experience for some of them, some are back again, and they deserve to have a good time and enjoy themselves and not be weighed down by the burden,” noting that it was “about finding a balance. I think we got it right. We’re gonna find out.” As for his own responsibilities as a host, he explained, “It affects it. It affects how I open. It affects the tone overall. We’re not gonna get here and then change the rules on the artist; we’re gonna celebrate her life… and then give them room so that they can go out there and do what they do.” Speaking about the tribute, Grammy executive producer Ken Ehrlich said in a statement, “It’s too fresh in everyone’s memory to do more at this time, but we would be remiss if we didn’t recognize Whitney’s remarkable contribution to music fans in general, and in particular her close ties with the Grammy telecast and her Grammy wins and nominations over the years.” Stick with MTV News all for all the Grammy red-carpet fashion , Grammy winners and Grammy news until the hangover wears off! Anthony Weiner Turned on by Men, Yearned for Threesome, Ex-Online Mistress Claims

Traci Nobles REALLY wants a publisher to purchase her proposal for a memoir about her interactions with Anthony Weiner. Nobles, a woman who met the disgraced politician on the Internet and is doing all she can to profit from that experience , supposedly gave an excerpt to Radar Online of one of the conversations she shared with Weiner via Twitter. Is Anthony Weiner smiling here at the thought of a threesome with another dude? Probably not. Nobles says Weiner asked her about “3 ways” with him and “another guy” and, when pressed on whether he’s turned on by men, responded : “Well it depends on the guy, but generally yes.” Of course, there’s no proof that this exchange actually took place. It’s just the word of a woman who carried on a Web-based affair with a married man and is now hoping to write a book about it… versus the word of a popular congressman who ended his career in humiliating fashion because he just had to send photos of his body to random females he had never met. Good luck choosing sides, readers! [Photo: WENN.com]

How To Manage Your Friendships

View original post here:

Last night, on a whim, a friend I hadn’t seen in years joined me and a gathering of mutual friends in one of our living rooms. I hadn’t expected this reunion to occur, but it was interesting to talk to her and learn about her life again, especially since things have changed so much since we last saw each other. During this meeting, I discovered, to my shock, that she and her best friend since childhood were no longer speaking. For as long as I could remember, this other woman and her were attached at the hip and it seemed like nothing could break the bond that they shared. It made me wonder how much people can change over the years as relationships evolve and ties that once were strong become strained with the passing of time. Friendships, if not cared for like living entities, can become wilted and slowly disintegrate beneath your grasp, despite your best efforts to act like nothing is wrong. Since life is constantly moving and no relationship can stay the same forever, you have to be aware of what it takes to sustain a close bond and keep feeding it for its continued growth. While social networking sites have become interesting new ways to close the gap of distance,  there is definitely no substitute for human-to-human contact that creates intimacy in relationships. How can you best manage your closest friends and relationships with the rules constantly changing? Can continual care and interest truly override distance and time that threaten to ruin a bond? One of the strongest ways to maintain close ties with someone is to be continually interested in their life. This has to be a genuine feeling on your end, however, or you can come off looking like you are nosing your way into their affairs. In order to stay on friendly terms with someone, giving them a quick call or sending them a simple text message like “How are you doing?” can go a long way in maintaining a relationship with them. Even if the conversations are not particularly detailed, there are always opportunities for you to suggest grabbing a meal or a cup of coffee together. Starting slow with friendly contact is a good way to build up trust and perhaps at some point, you two will be closer than you ever imagined possible! Although showing interest in someone’s life is a good thing, there is definitely a line to be drawn between “consistent” and “annoying.” Leaving space in a relationship is something a lot of people, including myself, are prone to struggling with. How much communication is too much? It’s hard to say, as everyone’s different and one person’s “too much” might be another person’s comfortable area. The best way to judge how often you should be contacting someone is by how often they answer you. Are they the type of person who isn’t good at answering their text messages, but is perfectly fine in person? If their texting skills are above-par, though and they just aren’t quick to answer you, this might be a sign that you are being too eager and should give the messaging a break. Wait for them to come to you. If they aren’t good at returning your calls and you don’t see them often in person, chances are that they don’t view you as close of a friend as you do. Not everyone can be a close confidant, however, so just be selective in your communication and who you want to cultivate. Trial and error eventually brings you who you’re meant to know! Another important thing to keep in mind in relationships is to be a good listening ear when they need a friend. As the old saying goes, to have a friend is to be a friend. A lot of people forget this simple idea of just being there for someone, despite how busy or stressed you may be. If the person you’re talking to thinks you’re not listening, perhaps because you’re tapping away at your smart phone or thinking of other things, then how is that a healthy relationship? You have to be there for the other person and that’s how friendship is strengthened. It does span both directions, however, and if they’re not there for you as much as you’re there for them, there is an imbalance of power that should be ironed out. Friendship is not a one-way street, so never forget – put in your end and they should reciprocate what you have given! The Importance Of Seeking Out Connections With People A nice touch to keep in mind while managing friendships is to show them that you’re thinking of them, even if you’re far away or not in-touch as much as you should be. Remember to send them a birthday gift or write them a short message on their special day to let them know that you were thinking of them! Leaving small tokens of appreciation on their Facebook wall or sending them a text message when you’re reminded of them is a nice touch, as well. Although moderation and balance is the key, showing them that you wish to keep in contact with them is important and necessary to strengthen your bonds, despite distance or busy schedules. While the technological age has made it easier than ever to keep up with people, remember what I said earlier – no form of faceless communication replaces the act of talking to someone in person. Try to be in their life as much as possible and make efforts to meet up with them just to hang out. True friendship is flying across the country to spend a few days with someone you care about, not how much you write on their Facebook wall. The idea of interpersonal relationships and intimacy is something that never grows old, so make sure you’re there for your friends, girls, regardless if they’re old comrades or new acquaintances! Nothing says being there for someone like the balancing effort of friendship between two people who care about each other. I leave you with my favorite friendship quote, one that makes the most sense to me in terms of sincerity and depth. As Robert Southey says: “No distance of place or lapse of time can lessen the friendship of those who are thoroughly persuaded of each other’s worth.” It’s important to remember that when two people are invested in each other, being far away only makes the heart grow fonder. Even if you’re both jumping through hoops to keep in touch, the time you put into maintaining a friendship is what keeps the foundation solid. Never give up on someone that means something to you, as you never know what tomorrow brings and the people you keep close ties with are the ones that truly leave an impression on your life. Why Are Words Of Wisdom So Important?
