The Marin County Sheriff’s Office reports that authorities responded to a 911 call just before noon today and found the star’s unresponsive body on the scene; a coroner suspects suicide due to asphyxia. Williams went back to rehab last month to focus on sobriety and insiders confirm alcohol remained an issue for him up to the very end. He struggled with cocaine and alcohol abuse in the early 1980s, but had been sober for over two decades until recently. Williams was best known for his starring roles in classic films such Dead Poets Society, Mrs. Doubtfire and Jumanji. He won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Dr. Sean Maguire in Good Will Hunting and had just starred last TV season in the fall sitcom The Crazy Ones. Former White House press secretary and outspoken gun control advocate James Brady has died at the age of 73, his family said in a statement Monday. The family cited “a series of health issues” for the long-time political spokesman and figure who was paralyzed during a shooting 33 years ago. “Over the years, Jim inspired so many people as he turned adversity into accomplishment,” the family said in the statement, referencing the attack. That attack was the 1981 assassination attempt on his boss, President Ronald Reagan. Brady went on to lead a gun control campaign that bears his name. The federal law that requires background checks be conducted on handgun buyers, The Brady Bill, passed in the ensuing years, to James’ great pride. “Few Americans in history as directly responsible for saving as many lives as Jim,” said Dan Gross, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. On March 30, 1981, Brady accompanied Reagan to a speech in Washington, D.C. John Hinckley Jr. opened fire on the presidential party, nearly killing the president. Reagan sustained a bullet wound in one lung, and eventually recovered; Brady sustained a wound in the head that paralyzed the left side of his body. Through therapy and a series of brain operations, Brady suffered constant pain as well as some slurred speech and partial brain damage, but he survived. Brady retained the title of press secretary for the remainder of Ronald Reagan’s presidency, even as others performed the duties of the office. Current White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said Brady “really revolutionized this job” and set a standard that successors should aspire to. Brady “showed his patriotism and commitment to the country by being very outspoken on an issue that was important to him and that he felt very strongly about.” Celebrities We Lost in 2014 1. Iconic blues guitarist Johnny Winter died last night at age 70. His body was discovered in a Zurich hotel room, and no cause of death has been reported. A god among guitarists, Winter first hit it big in 1968 when Rolling Stone dubbed him one of the most skilled musicians of his time. In 2003, the magazine listed Winter as number 63 on its list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. Though he spent much of his career as a successful solo artist, Johnny is perhaps best known for his collaborations with his younger brother Edgar Winter, as well for his work with blues/rock group Johnny Winter And. The latter group is remembered for the popular 1970 single “Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo,” which later became a Top 40 hit for the band’s guitarist, RIck Derringer: Johnny Winter: Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo Winter struggled with heroin addiction early in his career and recorded the song “Still Alive and Well” to celebrate kicking the habit in 1973. Louis Zamperini, a World War II hero about whom Angelina Jolie recently made a movie, died last night at his home in Hollywood. He was 97 years old. A statement released by Universal Pictures on Thursday morning included a message from Zamperini’s family. It reads: “Having overcome insurmountable odds at every turn in his life, Olympic runner and World War II hero Louis Zamperini has never broken down from a challenge. He recently faced the greatest challenge of his life with a life-threatening case of pneumonia. “After a 40-day long battle for his life, he peacefully passed away in the presence of his entire family, leaving behind a legacy that has touched so many lives. His indomitable courage and fighting spirit were never more apparent than in these last days.” Zamperini was a member of the U.S. Olympic track team in 1936. He then enlisted in the Army five years later and survived without food and water for 47 days after his plane crashed in the Pacific. He washed ashore in Japan and was subsequently held captive as a prisoner of war for two years. Jolie, whose Christmas Day release is based on the best-selling book Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand, said in a statement of her own: “It is a loss impossible to describe. File this one under unexpectedly harsh criticism from a Nickelodeon star: Earlier this month, Jennette McCurdy dissed Ariana Grande in an effort to get out from under her ex-co-star’s shadow. Now she’s turned her (negative) attention to an anonymous (and apparently fugly) ex-boyfriend: “Sometimes I look at old photographs of my ex and I want to cry because he was so ugly,” McCurdy tweeted. McCurdy dated Andre Drummond of the Detroit Pistons last year, and given the contentious nature of their breakup, many have wondered if McCurdy’s comments are directed at him. It wouldn’t be the first time that McCurdy has publicly dissed Drummond, and some have even suggested that Drummond leaked the McCurdy lingerie selfies that hit the Internet back in March. Of course, it’s possible that Jennette didn’t have Drummond in mind when she posted the tweet. Sadly, we’ll never know for sure which one of her exes McCurdy was targeting. In fact, it may have just been a joke meant for no one in particular (we doubt it). In any event, the whole “ugly” affair gives us an excuse to ogle Jennette’s racy pics again, and in the end isn’t that all that really matters? The answer is yes. Yes, it is: Jennette McCurdy Lingerie Photos 1. Jennette McCurdy Underwear Pic This appears to be a photo of Jennette McCurdy in her underwear. The only question: Who leaked it?
Author Robert Hoffman, Kate Gosselin’s arch-nemesis, is re-releasing his explosive tell-all book exposing the infamous reality mom he loves to hate. Or just full-on hates. Speaking out in the wake of Gosselin’s TLC special, Kate Plus 8: Sextuplets Turn 10 , Hoffman reveals there are shocking new allegations in the book. Asked why he decided to re-release the book that he had pulled from Amazon amid his legal battle with Kate, he said, “ I don’t like bullies . I don’t think anyone does.” “I don’t think anyone wants to live in a country where the people who can afford the best lawyers should get to automatically control the narrative, whatever that may be.” “I believe people have a right to hear all sides of a story. Not just the side that the people with the most money want to shove down their throats.” “People are smart enough to make their own decisions based on the facts. I think it’s time for all the cards to be put on the table and to let the chips fall where they may.” Kate previously sued Hoffman and Jon Gosselin , her ex-husband, claiming he had a hand in the book, namely hacking into her computer and stealing her identity. Hoffman claims in the book that Kate beat her kids with a wooden spoon and was cruel to the family animals, leaving them in their cages for hours, unfed. “There is much new information in the new book as well as the original horror stories,” Hoffman said. “Things appear to have only gotten worse for the children.” Gosselin adamantly denied all claims, but Hoffman stands by them, saying, “I don’t want to live with a ‘what if’ hanging over my head where children are concerned.” Hoffman’s Kate Gosselin: How She Fooled the World, The Rise and Fall of a Reality TV Queen is available now on Amazon with a print edition coming soon. Beloved radio icon Casey Kasem passed away this morning at the age of 82. His daughter Kerri confirmed the news via Facebook, writing, “Even though we know he is in a better place and no longer suffering, we are heartbroken.” Kasem is best known as the original voice of the American Top 40 countdown, and for millions of Americans, Kasem’s trademark voice is as much a part of the history of pop music as the songs themselves. Sadly, in his final days, a legal battle over Kasem’s care overshadowed the Detroit native’s inestimable contribution to the world of broadcasting. After a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease and dementia, Kasem was removed from life support earlier this week. In addition to his famous hit music countdowns, Kasem lent his voice to a number of famous cartoon characters, including Scooby Doo’s Shaggy – a part he played for over 40 years. In 1985, Kasem was inducted into the National Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame. In 2009 he retired from radio after nearly 60 years behind the mic. As always, he signed off with his signature phrase, “Keep your feet on the ground, and keep reaching for the stars.” Celebrities We Lost in 2014 1. Philip Seymour Hoffman R.I.P. Elena Baltacha, a former member of the Top 50 of the Women’s Tennis Association, died over the weekend after a long battle with liver cancer. She was 30 years old. The WTA confirmed this sad news on its website, writing that the Kiev-born Baltacha died peacefully while surrounded by family and friends. Baltacha represented Great Britain at the 2012 London Olympics and was diagnosed with the diseased in January, two months after retiring from tennis and just weeks after getting married. “We are heartbroken beyond words at the loss of our beautiful, talented and determined Bally,” husband Nino Severino said in a statement. “She was an amazing person and she touched so many people with her inspirational spirit, her warmth and her kindness.” Baltacha dealt with a chronic liver condition throughout her career, receiving medication and regular blood tests. But that didn’t stop her from reaching number-one in England. “Elena’s journey was never an easy one and yet she consistently showed her strength, good humor and indomitable spirit,” WTA chairman Stacey Allaster said. Prior to her passing, Baltacha had organized a tennis charity event in June, “Rally for Bally,” to raise money for a cancer hospital and her tennis academy. It will go ahead in her memory, with those involved including childhood friend Andy Murray, Martina Navratilova and Tim Henman. Celebrities We Lost in 2014 Open Slideshow 1.
