Must Be Nice: Education Department To Wipe Away $150 Million in Student Loan Debt

Source: Nigel Carse / Getty $150 Million In Student Loan Debt To Be Wiped Away The Education Department is wiping a whopping $150 million in federal student loans off the books, and has already begun the process of informing thousands of borrowers that they no longer owe the government money because the schools they attended shut their doors. The loan forgiveness, which was  announced earlier this week , applies to about 15,000 borrowers as federal education officials begin to carry out new rules that they fought in court for more than a year over. The department said it began notifying some of the borrowers by email on Friday that their loans would be discharged within the next few months. Any payments that the borrowers made toward a loan will also be refunded, it said. About half the borrowers attended Corinthian Colleges, a large for-profit chain that went bankrupt in 2015 after a deluge of lawsuits accusing it of predatory recruiting practices and false marketing. The rest attended one of the more than 1,000 other schools that shut down between November 2013, the start date for the automatic-discharge rules, and November 2015. The new rules require the department to automatically forgive the loans of eligible borrowers three years after their school closed, but students can apply before then. Under the Education Department’s closed school forgiveness program, federal student loan borrowers can apply to have their loans wiped away if they attended a school that closed while they were enrolled, or soon after, and they do not transfer their credits elsewhere. The program is based on the principle that lenders bear responsibility for ensuring that a loan is sound, and that borrowers shouldn’t be responsible for loans taken out for an education that turned out to be worthless. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos has said that she intends to rewrite the rules for some of the agency’s debt-forgiveness programs; The soonest those changes could take effect is July 2020. “The federal government must become a more responsible lender,” Ms. DeVos said, adding that students “need to understand the implications of their decisions.”

Incarcerated Scarfaces: Locked Up Goon Brags About His Lavish Life Behind Bars On Facebook [Video]

Come on! Murder suspect Brooklyn Traylor’s Facebook timeline boasts photos of him and at least one other inmate while they’re locked up in the Alcorn County Jail. “It’s one thing to have to hear from the DA that it’s going to be 2 or 3 years if it goes to trial, but it’s another thing when you see that her killer is actively on Facebook,” said Aaron Crum, the victim’s brother. Traylor was charged with killing Crum’s sister, Kris Ann Ledlow. Investigators said Taylor shot her in February during an attempted robbery at the convenience store where she worked. Locked up behind bars, Traylor brags on Facebook he’s making more money in jail than on the streets. “The impression I got from the post and the pictures is that he’s just living it up and having a good time,” said Crum. Crum was upset Traylor could even access Facebook and a cell phone. He said the family’s complaints to the DA and the jail have gone unanswered. WREG sat down with Alcorn County Sheriff Ben Caldwell to find out how this is happening. He denied his inmates are having one big party in jail. “I can assure you we don’t allow them to have parties in our jail, and again I understand the families concern. It’s my concern as well,” said Caldwell. The sheriff said there’s no way to prove Traylor is posting from jail. He said inmates sometimes give passwords to friends on the outside to post on their behalf, but he told WREG Traylor did have access to a cell phone at one point. Sheriff Caldwell said, “When that took place, he was placed in segregation. His visitation was taken away from him and some of his other privileges such as commissary access to television.” WREG exposed a history of problems at the Alcorn County correctional facilities three years ago. Last year the state of Mississippi removed bus loads of prisoners housed there because some inmates had their own keys to the jail while others could access drugs and cell phones. When Caldwell took over, he promised changes. The sheriff said keeping contraband out of the jail is one of his big challenges. Since March, he’s arrested two of his own jailers. He said he’s conducting more shakedowns and added more cameras inside and outside the jail. Caldwell showed WREG a picture of the evidence seized from a car caught circling a back fence near the rec yard at night. It’s an indication of what his officers are up against. The photo showed a dozen cellphones and chargers, ear buds, bags of what looks like marijuana, rolling papers, cigars, handheld video games, iPods and plastic bottles filled with liquor. Caldwell believed the suspects wanted to throw the items over a fence for some inmates to retrieve later. “They have nothing to do but sit back in our jail and think of ways to get things into our facility. We’re constantly fighting to keep that from happening,” the sheriff said. Caldwell said smuggling contraband into jails and prisons is a problem nationwide. He’s promised to stop it whenever possible because he knows the implications. “It just looks like one big joke to him. He’s talking about going from like pistol whipping to money making,” said the brother of the murder victim. The Crums said it hurts to see the teen arrested for killing this sister, daughter and mother of two girls, bragging on social media from jail while they grieve their tragic loss. “It’s a slap in our face. Kris isn’t here. She can’t defend herself anymore, so somebody has to and that’s why I’m here,” said Crum. Continue reading

Amanda Zuckerman: Big Brother Contestant Under Fire For Racist Comments

Yes, someone else was racist on Big Brother . The dishonor this time belongs to Amanda Zuckerman, who showed her true colors (so to speak) after an altercation with competitor Candice Stewart. Big Brother: Amanda Zuckerman Racist Comments Amanda, one of the most powerful people in the Big Brother house (and with the ego to go with it), had it out with Candice, one of the least powerful. Their argument was built on a foundation of ongoing drama, but culminated in Amanda yelling at Candice: “That’s the Shaniqua coming out of you, I guess!” As if the implications of that comment weren’t obvious, or in case you thought she didn’t care, Amanda followed that up with: “Am I racist now? I’m racist now.” Who would have guessed Spencer Clawson joking about child porn would have competition for most cringe-worthy moment of the week on Big Brother?

Lindsay Lohan Busted Again − Is She Beyond Help?

If Lindsay Lohan doesn’t go back to jail as a result of today’s news, I have an idea for a film project for her:  It’s a remake of Groundhog Day in which LiLo plays the Bill Murray role and wakes up every day to new criminal charges until she gets her act together.  Since Tina Fey is the last person to get a memorable performance out of Lohan, she should write and direct. Harold Ramis , who wrote and directed the original Groundhog Day , could have a cameo as the wise prison warden, and…Jesus, why am I even bothering? I used to actually believe that Lohan had it in her to carve out a great second act in her life and career by stopping the nightclubbing, cutting off her embarrassing parents and devoting herself to work. But after five trips to rehab,  the latest critical savaging she received for her performance in Liz & Dick and reports of her arrest Thursday morning and new criminal charges that are about to be filed against her,  I think it may finally be time to declare Lohan a lost cause. As you probably know, Lohan was busted around 4 a.m. on Thursday morning after she allegedly punched woman at a Manhattan nightclub.  Earlier that night, she’d caught Justin Bieber’s concert at Madison Square Garden, but apparently the good vibrations didn’t carry LiLo through the night. The NY Daily News reports that after exchanging words with 28-year-old Tiffany Eve Mitchell at the Chelsea nightclub Avenue,  Lohan slugged the alleged victim in the face. TMZ reported that Lohan, 26, was arrested  as she attempted to flee the scene in a friend’s car. “Are you kidding? Oh my God, are you kidding?” Lohan can be heard saying on the video of her arrest that the celebrity site posted.  (I’ve embedded it below.) Lohan was issued a desk appearance ticket for misdemeanor assault and faces a Jan. 11 court date, but that’s just the beginning of her troubles. As TMZ reports, “she’ll face a total of four new criminal charges on the same day on different coasts.” In addition to the above charge, law enforcement sources told the website that the Santa Monica City Attorney will also hit Lohan with three criminal charges stemming from her car accident there last June on the Pacific Coast Highway. Lohan’s Porsche slammed into the rear of an 18-wheeler and though she told police she was a passenger in the car, it turned out she had been driving. The charges: Giving false information to a peace officer, obstructing or resisting a police officer in the performance of his duty, and reckless driving. (Meanwhile, Lifetime reportedly may sue Lohan for breach of contract because this incident happened during the shooting of Liz & Dick and the cable network’s insurance policy on the actress forbid her from driving.) Lohan is still on probation for felony jewel theft and TMZ notes that when the actress is arraigned on these charges, probably next week, the judge will revoke her probation and set a hearing to “determine if she will go to jail for a long period of time.” I can already see a tearful Lohan pleading for leniency, but will the judge, or anybody, be moved?  At this point, it’s hard to feel any empathy — or even pity — for a 26-year-old actress who has squandered what should have been the most productive and exhilarating years of her career. Lohan could have been wowing us with her acting talent, but instead she chose to amuse and, ultimately, bore us with her bad behavior. What Does Nolan’s Final Word On ‘TDKR’ Mean For Those Joseph Gordon-Levitt Batman Rumors?

Christopher Nolan may have left the door wide open for speculation at the end of The Dark Knight Rises where Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Gotham cop John Blake is concerned, and he is producer/co-writer on Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel , which the rumor mill suggests could see a Very Special Gordon-Levitt cameo . But in a chat with Film Comment about his entire Batman trilogy, Nolan was asked if he was completely done with his Dark Knight universe. So what are the implications for those JG-L rumors? (Spoilers, if you haven’t seen TDKR …) “For me, The Dark Knight Rises is specifically and definitely the end of the Batman story as I wanted to tell it,” Nolan said, “and the open-ended nature of the film is simply a very important thematic idea that we wanted to get into the movie, which is that Batman is a symbol. He can be anybody, and that was very important to us.” I know, I know. Nolan keeps using phrases like ” specifically and definitely the end ” but it’s just so hard to let go of the hope that he’s just messing with us. ” Nah, J/K you guys — Joe’s totes the new Batman! ” the geekosphere desperately waits for him to say. Well, good luck getting anything concrete out of Nolan. I believe him when he says his run with the Batman universe is over, although that doesn’t mean it’s not possible that Gordon-Levitt might pop up at the end of Man of Stee l in a bat-cowl to give Superman a Justice League fist bump. Warner Bros. may love Nolan for giving them a super respectable, arguably Oscar-worthy Batman series, but they’re not dumb. WB will squeeze every drop of Bat-juice out of the character, regardless of how Nolan retains the integrity of his fully explored, definitely closed chapter of Bat-lore. “Not every Batman fan will necessarily agree with that interpretation of the philosophy of the character,” Nolan said, “but for me it all comes back to the scene between Bruce Wayne and Alfred in the private jet in Batman Begins , where the only way that I could find to make a credible characterization of a guy transforming himself into Batman is if it was as a necessary symbol, and he saw himself as a catalyst for change and therefore it was a temporary process, maybe a five-year plan that would be enforced for symbolically encouraging the good of Gotham to take back their city.” “To me, for that mission to succeed, it has to end, so this is the ending for me,” he continued. “And as I say, the open-ended elements are all to do with the thematic idea that Batman was not important as a man, he’s more than that. He’s a symbol, and the symbol lives on.” Symbol, protege, replacement, reboot — what do you make of the Gordon-Levitt rumors in light of Nolan’s comments? Kush Chronic-les: Mary Jane Dealer Donates Proceeds To Hurricane Sandy Victims

Do you think this guy’s a good doer ?? According to The Huffington Post , he donated half of the proceeds made in two days to Hurricane Sandy victims: The dealer said he didn’t care about the implications of turning drug money into supplies for victims in the Rockaways, N.Y., some of whom are still without power. He just wanted to help out, and raised $700 for the cause. “Look, there are probably some people down there [in the Rockaways] who want some marijuana — but that’s not going to clothe and feed them,” he said. “So in order for me to help, I needed to turn what I do into something concrete that I could give to them.” The college-educated weed dealer said he saw the devastation in Breezy Point — where some 80 homes flooded and burned to the ground — and decided it was time to make some green for the victims. He alerted his clientele last Monday that he would be donating, and the calls started coming in. He’s no Pablo Escobar, but the dealer claims he did make $1,400 in those two days, amounting to $700 that will go toward hot meals, diapers, formula, clean water and other supplies that people on the Rockaway Peninsula still desperately need. HuffPost crime confirmed that he bought 50 wool blankets that will likely go to residents who are still without power. “Yes, I made a little extra money for myself those two days,” he told HuffPost Crime. “But [my clients] are getting something they’d already get anyway. I was going to work regardless, and now I felt like I was doing it with purpose … I’m not doing what I do in order to get rich or create some super marijuana empire. I’m trying to help, and this is my job.” Love or hate his source of revenue, you’ve got to give him credit for giving part of his ‘salary’ to charity. It’s a lot more than most have done! ‘Spider-Man’ Star Andrew Garfield Reveals Spidey ‘Shrine’

‘I did try to look at every single thing that exists,’ he tells MTV News of his research for the role. By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Andrew Garfield Photo: MTV News Most Spider-Man fans would agree that the man who plays the iconic hero should be a fan. In that respect, Andrew Garfield fits the bill perfectly. When Garfield spoke with MTV News’ Josh Horowitz before a screening event for fans , he explained his process of tackling the role for “The Amazing Spider-Man,” and it involved lots and lots of comic books. “I did try to look at every single thing that exists. That is impossible, I discovered, but I did my best,” he said. But naturally, as a fan, there would be certain incarnations of the web-slinger that resonated with Garfield and helped him conceive his take on Spider-Man. For Garfield, those insights came from many different comic book sources. “There were certain things that I loved for his physicality. There were certain things that I loved for his wit. There were certain incarnations that I loved for his body type,” Garfield said. “The Ultimates, I love the body type in the Ultimates and his physicality in the Ultimates, but I also love the artwork in the ‘Torment’ series, the [Todd] McFarlane series.” Once those pieces were found, it was a matter of stringing them all together into an in-depth conception of the superhero. Garfield and his stunt team attempted to go through every level of Peter Parker’s life and think of the implications of his powers. “Me and the stunt boys, we created a room where we just had a shrine to everything Spidey and to everything Peter Parker, because we wanted to make sure the physical language wasn’t just a guy in a suit being a guy in a suit and throwing punches and throwing kicks,” he said. “We didn’t want it to be Jason Statham in a suit. We wanted it to be a half-spider, half-boy, who has spider DNA running around his blood system.” To realistically pull this off, the team went step-by-step to imagine how Spider-Man would realistically act, something necessary for bringing him to the big screen. “We wanted to understand deeply what that meant in terms of how he moves, in terms of skin sensitivity, in terms of his abilities of awareness. Imagine if he had six eyes. Imagine if he had more legs and what that means, not just within the suit but in day-to-day life,” Garfield said. “He can eat Chinese takeout with his feet, while he’s also writing a note, while texting with his shoulder. What does that mean? We tried to approach it from as organic a place as possible.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Amazing Spider-Man.” For breaking news and previews of the latest comic book movies — updated around the clock — visit SplashPage.MTV.com .
