View post:

Long-time Republican senator John McCain has died, a source has confirmed to the Associated Press. McCain, who had been battling brain cancer for a number of years, passed away in Arizona. He was 81. McCain, the former Presidential nominee, leaves behind his wife of 37 years Cindy; seven children, including three from his first marriage, to Carol Shepp; and his 106-year-old mother, Roberta McCain. McCain was four days shy of his 82nd birthday. McCain over the years became known as the “Maverick” of Congress and America’s most famous prisoner of war during the Vietnam War. The former Navy pilot with a famous admiral father was shot down over Vietnam and spent 5 1/2 years as a POW in the north, most of that time in a prison sarcastically termed the Hanoi Hilton for the way inmates were treated. He clashed ofter with Donald Trump and ran for President twice, first in 2000 and in 2008, when he won the Republican Nomination, ultimately losing to Barack Obama . Obama released a statement on the passing of McCain, saying, “Few of us have been tested in the ways John once was, or required to show the kind of courage that he did. But all of us can aspire to the courage to put the greater good above our own. At John’s best, he showed us what that means.” OBAMA statement on McCain pic.twitter.com/1uIj7zGraG — Zeke Miller (@ZekeJMiller) August 26, 2018 Join Our Text Club To Get The Latest Music, Entertainment, Contests And Breaking News On Your Phone

Senator McCain Slams ‘Zero Dark Thirty’ Torture Scenes

A front-runner in the Oscar race, Zero Dark Thirty received some harsh words from an unlikely source – Senator John McCain. The Arizona legislator who was a P.O.W. and endured torture during Vietnam watched the film by Kathryn Bigelow Monday night and said it left him sick and called it, “wrong.” McCain said that the controversial technique, known as water boarding, which simulates drowning, did not yield useful information from al Qaeda’s number three leader, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, who has been in U.S. custody since 2003. The film suggests that the technique resulted in useful information that lead the CIA to al Qaeda mastermind Osama Bin Laden’s courier, Abu Ahmed. “The filmmakers fell for it hook, line and sinker,” the Republican senator is quoted as saying by A.P. Last year, McCain, who spent 5 1/2 years in captivity by his North Vietnamese captors, asked then-CIA director Leon Panetta whether the hunt for Bin Laden came from information provided from Mohammed. The lead to the courier, however, came from a detainee held in a separate country. “Not only did the use of enhanced interrogation techniques on Khalid Sheikh Mohammed not provide us with key leads on bin Laden’s courier, Abu Ahmed, it actually produced false and misleading information,” McCain said in a speech in the U.S. Senate. California Senator Dianne Feinstein, who is chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee concurred that water boarding did not lead to the tip that eventually saw U.S. special forces raid a compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. McCain said that water boarding is dangerous because it damages the U.S.’s reputation and character and might be used against Americans. “I do not believe they are necessary to our success in our war against terrorists, as the advocates of these techniques claim they are,” he said. John Edwards Mug Shot: Always a Politician …

Once a politician, always a politician. Look at that handsome, smiling face. Going by these images, you’d never expect that former U.S. Senator John Edwards knocked up mistress Rielle Hunter while his wife was terminally ill, lied about it repeatedly, then allegedly covered it up with campaign funds. But, here we are. Nice to see John Edwards is still having fun . Edwards pleaded not guilty to conspiracy and campaign law violations. These mug shots were obtained by CNN . Goooo Freedom of Information Act! The plea came after a grand jury indicted him on six counts, including conspiracy, issuing false statements and violating campaign finance laws. The grand jury had been investigating whether money given to support Rielle Hunter by benefactors of Edwards’ 2008 run for the presidency. Their conclusion was that there was enough evidence to charge Edwards, who insists that despite his personal failings, he did not break the law . A plea deal between Edwards and the U.S. Justice Department fell apart over the the DOJ’s requirement that Edwards go to jail. He declined. Guess he’ll roll the dice at trial, where his chances of beating the rap are iffy. In the court of opinion, however, he’s long since been convicted.

By Aly Semigran Julianne Moore Photo: Dave Hogan/ Getty Images Television audiences are no strangers to seeing former vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin. From Tina Fey’s dead-on impression on “Saturday Night Live” to the TLC reality show “Sarah Palin’s Alaska” to becoming a pundit on Fox News, Palin (and her family, including daughter Bristol Palin who was a “Dancing With the Stars” contestant) has been nothing short of a mainstay in TV entertainment over the past few years. Now, Oscar-nominated actress Julianne Moore (“Children of Men,” “Boogie Nights”) will be the next to take on the former Alaskan governor. People magazine confirms that “The Kids Are All Right” star will play Palin in HBO’s upcoming movie “Game Change.” The movie is based on John Heilemann and Mark Halperin’s best-selling book of the same name, which was a scathing expos

Lisa Murkowski: Sarah Palin Lacks "Intellectual Curiosity" to be President

Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowki told CBS News' Katie Couric today that she would not support Sarah Palin for president because Palin lacks the “leadership qualities” and “intellectual curiosity” to craft great policy. “You know, she was my governor for two years, for just about two years there, and I don't think that she enjoyed governing,” Murkowski said. “I don't think she liked to get down into the policy.” The Alaska senator added that she prefers a candidate who “goes to bed at night and wakes up in the morning thinking about how we're going to deal with” important issues. Palin endorsed Murkowski's opponent Joe Miller in the Republican Senate primary, an endorsement that helped Miller to an upset victory. Murkowski then embarked on a general election write-in bid that may have been successful: More write in votes were cast than votes for Miller, and the vast majority went to Murkowski. According to the Alaska Division of Elections, Miller won 87,517 votes, and there were 98,565 total write in votes. Of the 88,076 write-in votes counted so far, 78,697 have gone to Murkowski; another 7,059 have been counted for Murkowski but challenged by Miller. Counting is expected to continue through Wednesday. added by: TimALoftis
