And a look at the Specialty offerings coming out this weekend. Clint Eastwood Owns The Chair Thing at Premiere The 82 year-old Oscar winner has taken some heat for his empty chair speech at the Republican National Convention, but at his premier for Trouble With the Curve he chatted with a press contingent that – somehow – noticed there were 16 empty chairs nearby – “Oh my god yes,” he said with a laugh. He added that he worked with people on the film that fall across the political spectrum, but his latest is not a political film. And he will continue to stomp for Romney, A.P. reports . John Travolta Eyes Vince Lombardi Biopic At the Zurich Film Festival, Travolta said he’s considering a remake of the John Woo film, The Killer as well as starring in a biopic of legendary football star Vince Lombardi. Riots Continue as Judge Denies Actress’ Move to Shut Down Innocence of Muslims Western embassies closed in anticipation of Friday prayers as protesters fought police in Pakistan. The government there ran ads on television showing U.S. President Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton condemning the video made by a U.S. resident that prompted the furor. A judge in California did not agree with an Innocence of Muslims actress that the film should be taken down, Deadline reports . Wallflower , Diana Vreeland , Head Games , How To Survive a Plague A run down of this weekend’s specialty openers, with a spotlight on some documentaries about a fashionista extraordinaire, sports risks and pioneers who faced down AIDS. Also check out a coming-of-age feature that has been all the rage on MTV (and it’s even good). Deadline reports .

TRAILER: Jesse Eisenberg Gets Kidnapped By Mom’s Drug Dealer in Why Stop Now

Jesse Eisenberg landed an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network and most recently, he is a love-sick architect opposite Alec Baldwin in Woody Allen’s To Rome with Love . Next up, the young star plays a piano prodigy who tries to check his mother (played by Oscar-winner Melissa Leo) into rehab. Things, however, go awry when he is taken hostage by her drug dealer (hate when that happens) and he is suddenly off on a wild adventure. The film was formerly titled Predisposed when it debuted at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. Despite the obvious that’s revealed in the trailer – namely the aforementioned mother who is hooked on drugs and a kidnapping by a drug dealer, the film appears to have some laughs. Phil Dorling and Ron Nyswanner co-direct the film and wrote the screenplay. IFC Films will release the film August 17th.

‘Newsroom’: Five Reasons To Watch

New HBO series stars Jeff Daniels and is penned by ‘Social Network’ and ‘West Wing’ writer Aaron Sorkin. By Kara Warner Jeff Daniels in “The Newsroom” Photo: HBO is on quite a roll with its Sunday night programming. In the wake of TV series success stories like “The Sopranos,” “True Blood,” “Game of Thrones,” “Veep” and “Girls,” the award-winning cable network has developed and debuted yet another buzzworthy show, “Newsroom.” Why is it buzzworthy? Because it’s written and created by Oscar, Golden Globe and Emmy winner Aaron Sorkin and it’s a television show about television, specifically the behind-the-scenes drama involved in the production of a nightly news show. The major characters include a hotheaded and egocentric anchor ( Jeff Daniels ), his strong-willed-yet-soothing executive producer and ex-girlfriend (Emily Mortimer), their jovial and bourbon-loving boss (Sam Waterston), and the idealistic newbie (Alison Pill) who’s dating a senior producer. There’s much to love and hate judging from the mixed reviews from critics, but we’re totally hooked. Here are five things to love about “Newsroom.” Sorkin Speak Aaron Sorkin didn’t win a Best Screenplay Oscar for “The Social Network” or Emmys galore for “The West Wing” for nothing. The man can write the heck out of dialogue. Say what you will about the pretentiousness, preaching and politics involved in an action-packed pilot that calls out America (and the mainstream media) for not being as good as it can be, but Sorkin moves things along at a crackling clip complete with pop-culture references from sources ranging from Twitter to Don Quixote. Going Back to the Future “Newsroom” is set in 2010 and the first episode revolves around the news of the BP oil spill. The show’s unique setting allows Sorkin to write around, and in some ways re-write, history, giving the “News Night” team the fictionalized plotline of being the only major news program to dedicate considerable airtime to early reports. Each episode will deal with fictionalized perspectives on memorable real-life news events and how they were reported. Inside Baseball Sorkin loves his behind-the-scenes-style stories — see his previous shows “Sports Night,” “The West Wing” and “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip.” In setting a show around something with which we’re all familiar (TV news, the White House) on a superficial level and then adding a healthy dose of interpersonal drama that everyone goes through at their respective places of work, Sorkin piques interest quite effectively. With “Newsroom,” the majority of the population can relate to watching TV news at some point in their lives, and Sorkin is using that to his advantage to draw in the audience as well as challenge them to think more critically about what they watch. We shouldn’t have to point out that it’s all a highly romanticized version of the real story, but there you have it. Jeff Daniels Although his comedic brilliance in “Dumb and Dumber” will live on forever, Daniels’ equally special skills as a dramatic actor are on full display in playing “News Night” anchor Will McAvoy. He is arrogant and self-obsessed, moody and unpredictable, which might all come off as a bland stereotype were the role in less adept hands than Daniels’. In short, McAvoy isn’t all bark and bite and blowhard. There are finely flawed layers to slowly peel away as we greet new sides of his character in each episode. Sam Waterston (and Other Support Cast) It would be a disservice to lump all of the other castmembers into one brief blurb, so this week’s “Newsroom” MVP award goes to Sam Waterston for bringing wit and lasting charm to the character of OG newsman Charlie Skinner. There’s a lot to like about Skinner since he’s the big bad boss making sure “News Night” continues to exist, in the process not firing the overly opinionated anchor, and re-hiring said anchor’s former flame. He clearly has a backbone, integrity and an eye for talent, even if that eye is frequently blurry from day drinking.

He’s Bringing’ Sessy Back: Justin Timberlake Gets His Hula Swag On And Gets Lei’d At Walmart Shareholders’ Meeting

JT is lucky he’s chopped down so many bad broads because we’d swear… Justin Timberlake Attends Wal-Mart Shareholders’ Meeting In Hula Skirt Justin Timberlake jetted to Fayetteville, Arkansas this week for an extra-special gig at the town’s Bud Walton Arena — hosting the Walmart Corporation’s Annual Shareholders’ meeting. Early Friday morning, the crooner, 31, donned a grass skirt and tied a lei around his head in an effort to get a rise out of the crowd. “It’s 7:20 a.m. That’s how Walmart does it? I need to work on my schedule,” Timberlake joked, leading the audience in the company’s “Walmart Cheer.” The Social Network star’s Fayetteville appearance comes on the heels of a sweet, PDA-packed May 26 engagement celebration with fiancee Jessica Biel–and 100-plus friends and family. “He and Jessica danced very closely,” when the DJ played his hit, “SexyBack,” a partygoer tells Us Weekly. “It looked like neither wanted the night to end.” Justin Timberlake, the consummate professional… Image via Flickr Source

Russell Brand on Katy Perry: Nothing But Love!

Russell Brand and Katy Perry might as well be teaching Celebrity Breakups 101. Proving that a split doesn’t have to be bitter or contentious just because it’s painful, the comedian opened up to Ellen DeGeneres about his recent divorce and had only positive things to say about former wife Katy Perry. “I still love her as a human being,” he said. “But, sometimes when you’re in a relationship I suppose it doesn’t work out, does it? You can’t absolutely make everything the way you want it to be in life. But that doesn’t mean I regret it or anything.” Russell Brand on Katy Perry (Ellen Interview) “Sometimes things are just different and then you move with that and try and remain in contact with what is beautiful about yourself and each other.” “I was very happy to be married with her,” Brand continued. “She’s such a beautiful human being and I just have only love and positivity for her.” Perry has since rebounded with Florence + The Machine guitarist Robert Ackroyd , with whom she was spotted packing on the PDA at Coachella. Still, it’s time to move on. Last week, Brand finally unfollowed her on Twitter. Also on Ellen , Brand weighed in on various newsworthy items of the day, including the Time Magazine breastfeeding cover . You gotta watch.

Eduardo Saverin, Facebook Co-Founder, Renounces U.S. Citizenship in Advance of IPO

Eduardo Saverin, the billionaire Facebook co-founder portrayed by Andrew Garfield in The Social Network , is no longer an American citizen. Saverin, 30, renounced the U.S. citizenship he gained as a teenager in advance of the company’s impending IPO, a move met with criticism. He’s accused of trying to skip out on taxes with the move, though the Brazilian-born resident of Singapore has done nothing illegal at any point. Eduardo Saverin co-founded Facebook at age 21, was forced out two years later, sued CEO Mark Zuckerberg and ultimately settled out of court. He was given a share of the company that left him phenomenally wealthy. His stake, 4 percent of the company, will most likely be worth more than $3 billion when Facebook goes public Friday. Hence his exit now. Saverin joins a growing number of people giving up U.S. citizenship , a move that can trim their tax liabilities when residing in lower-tax nations. Said Tom Goodman, a spokesman for Saverin, in an e-mailed statement: “Eduardo recently found it more practical to become a resident of Singapore since he plans to live there for an indefinite period of time.” He professes ignorance about his taxes and refuses to discuss his finances. “This had nothing to do with taxes,” he insisted. “I was born in Brazil, I was a U.S. citizen for about 10 years. I thought of myself as a global citizen.” Saverin renounced U.S. citizenship “around September”, according to his spokesman. Singapore doesn’t have a capital gains tax. It does tax income earned in that nation, as well as “certain foreign- sourced income,” according to reports. Saverin won’t escape all U.S. taxes. Americans who give up their citizenship owe what is effectively an exit tax on the capital gains from stock holdings. Renouncing your citizenship in advance of an IPO is “a very smart idea,” said one expert, “Once it’s public you can’t fool around with the value.” Saverin’s decision to leave could have been a wager that the cost of an exit tax now – 15 percent of whatever valuation he could get the IRS to agree to – would be far less than the 35 percent or more in estate tax his heirs would face.

Mark Zuckerberg Targets Facebook Mobile Growth

Controversy over Mark Zuckerberg’s hoodie abated Friday as he turned investors’ attention to more important matters at a presentation in Palo Alto, Calif. Chief among them? Improving Facebook’s mobile application . About 200 investors showed up at an IPO presentation to quiz Zuckerberg about generating revenue from mobile users, crucial for long-term fiscal growth. Zuckerberg and Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook’s COO, said overall advertising is gaining steam, with most marketers increasing their spending with Facebook. The executives, who appeared on stage alongside CFO David Ebersman, highlighted social ads as an important tool for Facebook to tackle mobile challenges. The ads, incorporating information about Facebook users’ friends who “like” certain products, are better-suited to the smaller screens of smartphones. More than half of Facebook’s users currently use it from phones. As Facebook collects more information about its users, such as location data, Facebook will be able to offer more relevant mobile ads, executives said. Facebook aims to raise about $10.6 billion via its initial public offering, dwarfing Google’s recent IPO and giving it a market value around $96 billion. The Facebook IPO marks a watershed moment for the new generation of startups that are challenging established players such as Google and Yahoo. Consumers’ online time – and advertising dollars – are very much the future. With 900 million users, Facebook is the world’s dominant social network. Zuckerberg, the 28-year-old CEO, was Time Magazine ‘s Person of the Year in 2010 and was depicted in the fictionalized 2010 movie The Social Network .

Happy 18th Birthday, Justin Bieber! Let’s Predict His Acting Future

Usually we celebrate birthdays ’round these parts with a look at someone’s best screen work. But pop icon Justin Bieber has only a guest turn on CSI and his hit concert doc Justin Bieber: Never Say Never under his newly notched cinematic belt — so far. Still, he’s got plans to break into acting with a handful of projects on the horizon, so in honor of the Biebster’s 18th birthday, let’s predict what the future may hold for the doe-eyed Canadian crooner as he adds “actor” to his resume in earnest. As far as musicians-turned-actors go, the transition certainly can be made, and well; just look at examples from recent generations of teen idols-turned-thespians like Justin Timberlake , Ryan Gosling , and Mark (-y Mark) Wahlberg . After getting their respective starts by singing and dancing their way into the hearts of their fans (or, in the case of Wahlberg, rapping and dancing his way out of his pants for Calvin Klein), each took a different route to gain full-fledged respect as an actor. Timberlake enjoyed early fame as the youngest member of boy band ‘N SYNC before testing the waters of acting with the 2000 ABC telefilm Model Behavior , which any good ‘N SYNC fan watched because it was Justin Timberlake Acting. Eventually he graduated to bolder choices in projects like Alpha Dog and Black Snake Moan , which declared his more serious acting aspirations, and thank goodness; he’s much more interesting to watch these days even if every Social Network is balanced out by a Yogi Bear , In Time , Bad Teacher , or Friends with Benefits . Gosling spent his youth alongside (and in the shadow of) Timberlake on The Mickey Mouse Club , a mop-topped Canadian R&B enthusiast who didn’t quite go on to achieve the pop glory of the more successful of his peers. So he earned his stripes the old-fashioned way: At first on television in Young Hercules , then by going for braver roles in films like The Believer , which established Gosling’s more indie-leaning tastes. Wahlberg, meanwhile, shed his “Marky Mark” moniker as he pursued a serious acting career in the early-to-mid ’90s. After appearing in supporting roles that tapped into his natural charisma in Renaissance Man and The Basketball Diaries , he dared to play bad in Fear and established himself by playing porn star Dirk Diggler in Boogie Nights . So Bieber has no shortage of role models to mold his burgeoning acting career after; he’s already got a starring feature project cooking with Wahlberg and may team up with Ashton Kutcher for a comedy. He’s already too famous to follow in Gosling’s footsteps — the Drive star’s trajectory was borne of necessity rather than celebrity — but he could certainly take a cue from Gosling’s choices. Then again, Bieber’s got his brand and his fans to consider; how best can he transition into an acting career (not to mention young adulthood) while the world watches, and while he’s still making more records that need selling? That’s not to say anyone’s ready to see angel-faced Bieber playing thugs, evil boyfriends, neo-Nazis, or porn stars. (Just yet.) But I’d like to think he’d like to, one day. His stint on CSI playing a doomed serial bomber hinted at a desire to play against his pop persona. Show us more darkness, oh cherubic one! Use that magic hair for evil! I’m hoping the day comes when I can watch Bieber act and forget he’s Bieber — that he can make us Belieb, for real.
