Lorde to Kanye West: You Ganked My Stage Ideas, Bruh!!

Last week, Kanye West was forced to flee as shots were fired on set . Also, everywhere near his primary residence is on fire. Now, he’s facing accuastions from Lorde that he totally ripped off her stage designs for his shows. And she has the photo comparisons to back up her claim. Kanye West and Kid Cudi’s “Kids See Ghosts” Tour has attracted the wrong kind of attention. Lorde, the absolute legend who won a Grammy before graduating high school, took to her Instagram Stories. There, she shared a series of images noting what she found to be a suspicious similarity between her tour’s stage design and Kanye’s. The suspended box design, creating a second floor to the stage without taking up any stage space, is pretty difficult to miss. Did Kanye really steal the work? Lorde suggests so with a few words. “I’m proud of the work I do,” Lorde wrote in reflection. “And it’s flattering when other artists feel inspired by it,” she continued. Lorde clarified about that flattered feeling: “to the extent that they choose to try it on themselves.” “But don’t steal,” she insists. “Not from women or anyone else,” Lorde writes. “Not in 2018 or ever.” Es Devlin is a designer who has worked closely with Lorde. “It’s hard to come up with stuff that feels new,” Lorde shared in 2017. “And with the tank it felt weird and interesting and quite specific to me,” Lorde shared. She spoke of her collaboration with Devlin: “The two of us just built it from the ground up, bouncing ideas back and forth.” Devlin has also very notably worked with Kanye for many, many years. In an apparent response to Lorde’s post, Devlin made a post on Instagram showing a similar “box” in the opera, Carmen , by Georges Bizet. Interestingly, this isn’t the first time that someone has noticed that Kanye’s stage design seems similar to another. Last time, it was this image (above) of hanging lights. Kim Kardashian herself took aim at Saint Laurent, suggesting that Kanye’s set design had been ripped off. (One could argue that no one gets to lay claim to the concept of hanging lights, but it really doesn’t matter) That makes defending Kanye against Lorde a little complicated. That is, assuming that Ye has any defenders left who aren’t in his bed or on his payroll. Some could cynically suggest that Lorde is being opportunistic. Lorde is famously friends with Taylor Swift. Even more famously, Taylor and Kanye have a serious beef. In 2016, Kim orchestrated Taylor’s temporary downfall. Now, however, Taylor is back. Meanwhile, Kanye chose 2018 as the year to purge himself of any lingering goodwill that the public may have for him. Is Lorde just kicking Kanye while he’s down by attacking his art? So, did Lorde jump the gun by indirectly accusing Kanye of ripping off her work? Did Kanye and Lorde just come up with similar ideas? (Great trains run along the same tracks, if Kanye is still considered to be “great”) Or did Es Devlin rip off a design from an opera and then pass it off to both artists? We would suggest that it’s more likely (and also kinder) to suggest that no one is stealing from anyone. Stages only have so many possible designs, folks. That said, we can understand why Lorde might be sensitive on the topic. There is a widespread phenomenon, from business meetings to the art world, of men duplicating a woman’s ideas and receiving credit for it. It’s good to be on guard for that — even if you might, occassionally, be mistaken. View Slideshow: 21 Celebrity Feuds We Never Saw Coming

5 American (Or Canadian) Pop Stars Who Have Showed Off Their Spanish Chops With Latin Collaborations

Go here to see the original:

Source: George Pimentel / Getty Drake has been the talk of the town all day since releasing a brand new track titled “Mia” with Bad Bunny . The up-tempo record features Aubrey singing in Spanish, as Bunny follows up with a long verse of his own. The visual, released simultaneously, sees both stars enjoying an evening block party, equipped with dancing, hookahs, and a game of dominoes. Bad Bunny feat Drake – “Mia” But 2018 is far from Drake’s first time teaming up with a Latin-American superstar. Back in 2013, Drizzy teamed up with former Aventura lead singer  Romeo Santos for “Odio,” in which the Canadian also showcased his Spanish singing skills. This initial collaboration was especially fitting following the lyrics from Drake’s 2011 smash hit “The Motto,” where he rapped, “Spanish girls love me like I’m Aventura.” What foreshadowing. Romeo Santos feat Drake – “Odio” Though Drake is known for his ability to “adapt” into other cultures like they’re his own, he’s not the first–and won’t be the last–to experiment with some bi-lingual singing skills. Let’s take a look at other huge stars who have crossed over into collaborations with Latin sensations. Before Romeo and Drake came Romeo and Usher .  Mr. Raymond doesn’t actually show off any bi-lingual chops on his track “Promise” from Romeo Santos’ 2011 album  Fórmula, Vol. 1 , but the collaboration was a big deal for both artists, nonetheless. Romeo Santos feat Usher – “Promise” We can’t talk about North American pop-stars crossing over without talking about Justin Bieber . The Canadian heartthrob hopping on the remix to Daddy Yankee  &  Luis Fonsi’s “Despacito” is probably the most successful Spanish crossover of all-time–and with the original video boasting 5.5 billion views on Youtube, it’s one of the most successful singles ever, in general. Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee feat Justin Bieber – “Despacito (Remix)” Keeping it in the family, Luis Fonsi’s brother  Jean Rodriguez is actually the one who coached Beyoncé  on her Spanish chops before she hopped on J Balvin’s “Mi Gente.” Though the release of this song (and Bey’s involvement in it) had everybody freaking out, this wasn’t Mrs. Carter’s first time around the block. The superstar has made her fair share of Spanish remixes to her very own songs including “Si Yo Fuera Un Chico (If I Were a Boy),” “Oye (Listen),” and “Irreemplazable (Irreplaceable).” J Balvin & Willy William feat Beyoncé- “Mi Gente” Though it wasn’t a collaboration with a Latin musician, Kendrick Lamar paid tribute to his Los Angeles roots by rapping his a$$ off en Español for his feature on labelmate Schoolboy Q ‘s track “Collard Greens.” Schoolboy Q feat Kendrick Lamar – “Collard Greens” Those five aren’t the only North American artists to dabble in some Spanish, check out these honorable mentions to get well-versed in the bi-lingual world of American music. Barry’s Back: Barack Obama Slams President Trump, GOP In Epic Speech

Source: Scott Olson / Getty Barack Obama can no longer hold the highest office in the land, but he still has the ability to inspire the nation as evidenced by a rousing speech he gave earlier Friday. While at the University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign, the former commander-in-chief slammed President Donald Trump and the Republican Party in the most eloquent way possible. Politico reports : Laying out a brief history of America — starting with George Washington’s decision to step out of public life after leaving the presidency — Obama framed the 2018 elections as more significant than ever before. And for the first time since leaving office, he said Trump’s name. Obama unfurled a paragraph-by-paragraph condemnation of Trump, his presidency and what he has uncorked in American politics. “It did not start with Donald Trump. He is a symptom, not the cause,” Obama said to applause. “He’s just capitalizing on resentments that politicians have been fanning for years.” It’s not just about Trump, Obama said. It’s about Republicans “who know better in Congress … bending over backwards to shield” Trump. They’re hypocrites, he said, and they’re just as dangerous to America. At times mocking them and at times laying into them, Obama said they’ve abandoned all that they’re supposed to stand for as Republicans, and as citizens of this country. The entire speech can be watched below courtesy of NBC News — Photo: Getty

For The Culture: Dapper Dan Wins Lifetime Maverick Award

Source: Nicholas Hunt / Getty Dapper Dan’s glow up seems to have no end in sight. He was recently recognized for his 20 plus years of style contribution. On Tuesday, September 4 the tailor was honored at the Harlem’s Fashion Row gala hosted at Capitale New York. Mr. Day was presented with the Lifetime Maverick Award. Wearing a black tuxedo with a sequin like bow tie, that matched his signature over sized Gucci sunglasses, the famed outfitter was grateful for the distinction and the opportunity to further open doors for minority designers. “It’s something I never expected, and that’s pretty obvious by the fact I never tried to penetrate the fashion industry,” he explained to Page Six.  “I had absolutely no connection to the structure of fashion, so it was something that I never expected. But I feel great about it now — more so for what it does to people of color, for people behind me.” NBA great LaBron James also had a big night as he formally unveiled HFX x Lebron 16. It is a Nike first; a basketball shoe for women designed by women. Three African American designers crafted the shoe under James’ direction that it be themed after strong Black women. On stage the LA Laker’s speech furthered his sentiments behind the release. “I believe that African American women are the most powerful women in the world” he said. ‘Bron also cited his mother as a huge inspiration for the collaboration. “Because of you, Gloria James, I am able to give back — her sense of pride and sense of strength.” Harlem’s Fashion Row is a social company that provides a voice for multicultural designers; through a creative platform that enables these designers to sell and present their collections to key leaders within the fashion industry. Ty Dolla previously announced on his Twitter page the project would be released today (Aug. 24); however, that message has since been deleted–so we probably shouldn’t hold our breath. MihTy  will also include the previously released single “The Light,” and feature some of the biggest and hottest names in the game today. This includes people like French Montana, Wiz Khalifa, and Kehlani. Just ask HitMaka, who is probably producing a good portion of the joints on the project. For all the ladies, for all the fellas to ride to. This a little mixture of everything if you ask me. It’s R&B and hip-hop vibe.” Hopefully we’ll get some more info about MihTy’s release date soon, but until then, we’ve got “New Level” to vibe to.
