Disconnecting Your Brain from Tech Can Reconnect It to Reality (Video)

Photo by Samuel Mann How do our brains physically react when we’re yanked away from all things techy that currently run our lives? A group of five neurologists took a trip to Glenn Canyon National Recreation Area to find out what actually happens to our brains when we remove email, cell phones, text messages, televisions — even watches — from our field of vision and daily tasks. During the week-long experiment (that sounds like one of the world’s best experiments to be a participant in) the neurologists rafted down the San Juan River, camping along… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Prop 8 Breaking News: Federal Appeals Court Puts California Same-Sex Marriages On Hold Indefinitely

Federal Appeals Court Puts Same-Sex Marriages On Hold Indefinitely http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_KrNl-GdSDb4/SF_T82PjUSI/AAAAAAAAAcY/fecu5sd8RO4/s400/s… Breaking: Ninth Circuit Stays Prop. 8 Decision _____ http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2010/08/federal-appeals-court-blocks-enfor… Los Angeles Times Southern California — this just in No gay marriages in California before December, court rules August 16, 2010 | 3:58 pm The U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals on Monday agreed to keep same-sex marriages on hold until at least December. In a brief order, a three-judge panel agreed to an expedited review of U.S. District Judge Vaughn R. Walker's Aug. 4 ruling that overturned Proposition 8 as a violation of the federal Constitution. The panel agreed to hold a hearing on the case during the week of Dec. 6 and ordered both sides to present arguments on whether the campaign for Proposition 8 has legal authority to appeal Walker's order. Walker had declared Proposition 8's ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional, saying it violates gay men's and lesbians' rights to equal protection and due process. The defendants in that case were Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Atty. Gen. Jerry Brown, but they declined to defend the law. As the losing parties, they have the authority to appeal Walker's ruling. But they hailed Walker's decision and said they would not appeal. A private group that opposes same-sex marriage, ProtectMarriage.com, defended Proposition 8 during the trial Walker held earlier this year. The group wants to appeal his ruling but may lack legal standing to do so. — Maura Dolan in San Francisco added by: EthicalVegan

Jessica Biel on Justin Timberlake, Fashion and Mount Kilimanjaro

She often sits stop near the top of publication’s list of Most Beautiful Women. She’s often photographed by the paparazzi. She stars in a lot of movies and she’s dating one of the world’s most beloved singers. Do we actually know much about Jessica Biel, though? The actress is a rather unknown entity in this celebrity gossip age. But perhaps we’ll learn more about her in this month’s Glamour , as she touches on the following subjects in the magazine… On keeping in shape : I like to do a couple of yoga classes during the week, mixed in with weight training sessions for strength. And yoga for me is more of an elongating thing. I hike and walk my dogs a lot. It keeps me very clear-headed. On competing with the world of Justin Timberlake : I guess I would say my thing is just as wonderful. And that’s the only way: when you each have your own world and it’s just as great. On making fashion choices : I’m not someone who has this amazing instinct about fashion. Sometimes I cannot be bothered…I just thrown on whatever is comfortable… I literally spent most of my teenage years in Umbro shorts and No Fear T-shirts. On climbing Mount Kilimanjaro : I’ve learned that I can push forward, which was exciting for me. When you get out into the wilderness and strip [away] all of the stuff in your everyday life, you really gain a great respect for your own life, simply as it is. Well said, Jess. Guess you can do more than just pose beautifully. Really, really, really beautifully .

Reid open to public option reconciliation vote

WASHINGTON — As supporters of the public option mount a comeback, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) signaled his willingness to pass it through reconciliation Friday. “If a decision is made to use reconciliation to advance health care, Senator Reid will work with the White House, the House, and members of his caucus in an effort to craft a public option that can overcome procedural obstacles and secure enough votes,” Reid's spokesman Rodell Mollineau told The Plum Line's Greg Sargent. “Senator Reid has always and continues to support the public option as a way to drive down costs and create competition. That is why he included the measure in his original health care proposal.” During the week, more and more senators signed on to a letter authored by Sen. Michael Bennett (D-CO) calling for a vote on the public option through the budget reconciliation procedure, which would allow it to pass with a simple 51-vote majority. By Friday, 18 senators were on board. More… http://rawstory.com/2010/02/reid-public-option-white-house-hedges/ added by: SleepDirt
