Blige hand out fades to some superhuman cats in Netflix’s upcoming series The Umbrella Academy and while it’s first trailer was a cool introduction to the cast and villains, it’s second trailer will certainly heighten anticipation for the show’s premiere next month. Based on the Dark Horse comic book series created by Gerald Way, the plot to The Umbrella Academy is certainly easy enough to follow for anyone not familiar with the story. On the same day in 1989, forty-three infants are inexplicably born to random, unconnected women who showed no signs of pregnancy the day before. Seven are adopted by a billionaire who creates The Umbrella Academy and prepares his “children” to save the world. Now, the six surviving members reunite upon the news of their father’s passing and must work together to solve a mystery surrounding his death. But the estranged family begins to come apart due to their divergent personalities and abilities, not to mention the imminent threat of a global apocalypse. What the synopsis doesn’t tell you is that the Queen of Hip-Hop soul is one half of an assassin duo that are hellbent on keeping the apocalypse date on schedule, and if that means bodying a superhuman or two, so be it. Bernstein / Getty Rudy Giuliani’s current turn as the attorney for President Donald Trump already has a number of bloops and blunders but his most recent one could have far-reaching repercussions. The former New York City mayor essentially said that the Trump campaign colluded with Russia, but continued to absolve the president of any wrongdoing. The Hill reports : “I never said there was no collusion between the campaign. Or between people in the campaign,” Giuliani said on CNN’s “Cuomo Prime Time,” after host Chris Cuomo said it was false to suggest there was no collusion between Trump’s presidential campaign and the Kremlin. Giuliani added that he has only said Trump, rather than his campaign, did not collude with the Russians. “There is not a single bit of evidence the president of the United States committed the only crime you could commit here, conspiring with the Russians to hack the [Democratic National Committee],” Giuliani said. Giuliani’s statement comes just as special counsel Robert Mueller concludes his investigation into possible collusion, and has already connected five persons formerly aligned with Trump and 20 Russians to the probe. It will be interesting to see how Giuliani wiggles out of this one considering he barely clarified his point, resorting to bluster to out talk Cuomo. “I never said there was no collusion between the campaign or between people in the campaign… I have not. Source: Lorenzo Ciniglio / Getty Aretha Franklin’s Estate Believes Property Was Stolen After She Passed Away According to The Blast , the late Aretha Franklin is reportedly missing some valuable property, and the estate believes a crime may have been committed. The estate of the late-great Aretha Franklin released a statement staking that there is an ongoing investigation being conducted by the Bloomfield Township Police Department in Michigan, where Franklin previously lived. Reports of the investigation came about because the estate is locked in a nasty battle with Franklin’s son, Edward. Edward has been trying to get a court order to force the estate to produce monthly financial documents to Franklin’s heirs. But the estate is very hesitant to turn over the documents so easily, because they claim it may negatively impact the criminal investigation by police into the missing assets. There is also an ongoing dispute between Franklin’s estate and one of her ex-husbands regarding the payment of music royalties. The estate says the records that were requested “may jeopardize these matters and should not be disclosed.” The estate is demanding the court shut down Edward’s attempt to get the records so that the police can continue their investigation, as The Blast reports.
Source: Mary Knox Merrill / Getty She Really Tried It A 32-year-old woman was clearly up to no good when she pretended to be a homeless teen so she could enroll in high school classes. According to WNYT.com , Michaelann Goodrich told the Cairo-Durham School District in New York that she was a 15-year-old named Riley Madison. She reportedly attended one day of high school classes and even rode the bus to and from school on December 20th. She was absent on the 21st and then the holiday break began the next week. Authorities arrested Goodrich on the 28th and charged her with offering a false instrument for filing, falsifying business records and criminal trespassing. Investigators are still unsure of how Goodrich was able to enroll in classes in the first place. District Superintendent Anthony Taibi said administrators immediately felt something wasn’t right. “She could’ve gone in numerous different ways to obtain a degree and we actually found out through the investigation and that she has a high school diploma,” he said. “So that just leads to our investigation to try to figure out what exactly her motive was for attending school.” According to Taibi, the district had to admit Goodrich into the school immediately under the McKinney-Vento Act because she was homeless. Parents in the neighborhood were obviously distraught when they found out about the over-aged high school attendee. “It was kind of unnerving, it could’ve been anybody you know you hear about school shootings all that, could’ve been anybody coming in here trying to get plans of the school,” said Joshua Mack, who has a daughter in middle school. “I mean obviously that wasn’t the case but it could’ve been.” Taibi said that the McKinney-Vento Act should probably be re-assessed after a situation where non-teens can slip through the cracks. Mack agreed with the sentiment. “I don’t know maybe they need to look into the act a little better maybe find out–not throw her in school right away, find out where she came from, find out what’s going on with the family and everything,” Mack said. The case surrounding Goodrich is still active and investigators are asking anyone who may have had contact with Goodrich to contact the Greene County Sheriff’s Office.
Source: Toshi Sasaki / Getty Two Lawsuits Call Out Staff Members By Name Some horrible and shady things seem to be coming to light for a juvenile detention center in New York. According to New York Daily New s , supervisors and staff at the Horizon Juvenile Center were accused in a lawsuit of coercing teens to perform sex acts with them. The suit was filed on behalf of Franklyn Malonado, a teen who spent 2010 through 2014 in and out of Horizon. At the detention center, which holds 10 to 15-year-olds in Mott Haven, supervisors allegedly participated in “grooming” teen boys and girls to have sex with Horizon employees in exchange for things like smuggled booze, cigarettes and food. Former administrative director of residential child care, Tahia Dennis, was one of the supervisor named in the suit. Weeks after being named, Dennis ordered the shredding of internal documents. The content of the documents is unknown, but they could possibly link staff to the alleged abuse. Fortunately, the documents didn’t get destroyed and according to City Administration for Children’s Services (ACS), they were seized by management and sent to a locked warehouse. The situation was then referred to the city Department of Investigation. The lawsuit described graphic details of the alleged abuse. In one instance, a female counselor was found naked on top of a teenager in his cell. Malonado says that same counselor told him she would make sure he didn’t face disciplinary actions if he “took care of her needs.” Initially, Malonado’s suit was filed in August of 2017 and it didn’t include names. However, in September of that year, Maldonado’s lawyer, Vik Pawar, filed an updated lawsuit that listed the names of supervisors, including Dennis. Twelve days later, Dennis sent out an email to the detention center’s tour commander and overseer of counselors, writing, “Please begin immediately to shred old paperwork and files that you might have since the building opened. Thank You.” A former employee at Horizon said the documents were shredded soon after the email was sent out, however a spokeswoman for the ACS, Chanel Caraway, told Daily News that none of the records were shredded. “This was part of a routine shredding of duplicate documents, but these documents were never actually shredded and have been stored in a secure location the entire time,” Caraway said. “However, the matter was referred to DOI upon learning of it.” A second lawsuit was filed in May of 2018 accusing certain Horizon staff members of sexual abuse. Miguel Smith, a teen who was at Horizon between 2013 and 2015, said that Dennis and another supervisor would “stand guard” while a female counselor had sex with him. Pawar is representing Smith as well, and he questions the claim that the email shredding order was apart of a routine task. “It says ‘from the beginning’ so they’ll be hard-pressed to explain that they’ve been doing this (shredding) going back,” Pawar said. “I think they’re hiding stuff. I think they got caught with their pants down and they were destroying evidence.” A new ACS commissioner had been appointed since all the alleged abused took place and he said he “ordered a top-to-bottom overhaul of leadership and practices at Horizon.” Meanwhile, the investigation of the staff in the lawsuits continues.
T he cloud of corruption finally lifted from Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum with the release on Wednesday of an FBI report on its probe of city officials. It confirmed Gillum’s denial of wrongdoing and showed that his Republican rival for Florida governor Ron DeSantis exploited the investigation to win the election. DeSantis led a racist campaign that poured millions of dollars into painting Gillum, who was running to become the state’s first African-American governor, as corrupt—even though Gillum had always said he was not a target of the probe. Republicans spent at least $7 million on TV ads to connect Gillum to the investigation. It paid off, with DeSantis winning a narrow victory. “If the FBI had something on Gillum, they would have brought it by now or it would be in this indictment. They got nothing on Gillum. He got screwed,” said Steven R. Andrews , a Republican strategist who is also a criminal defense attorney representing one of the defendants in the case. Corey had reportedly set up meetings between undercover FBI agents, posing as land developers, and Tallahassee officials—including Gillum. The FBI investigation was just one of the tools in DeSantis’ arsenal that included racist attacks. DeSantis has a long history of associating with white nationalists. Less than 24 hours after winning the GOP nomination in August, DeSantis blew a racist dog whistle when he warned Florida voters not to “monkey this up” by voting for Gillum. Soon after, white supremacists answered the whistle by sending out racist robocalls. Another series of robocalls attacking Gillum went out during their first debate. Gillum decidedly out-dueled DeSantis in the first debate through his mastery of the issues. But the Trump-backed candidate often used allegations of corruption to score points against Gillum. Now that the FBI investigation is in the rearview mirror, Gillum can focus on his political future. There were reports that he met recently with former President Barack Obama . When they got there, they found 25-year-old Lauren Gelinas under the influence. Police say she told them she was babysitting two kids on that street (ages 2 & 4), and police found two small kids, under the age of five, in distress and in unsafe conditions. The Department of Health & Human resources was immediately notified, and Gelinas was charged with endangering the welfare of a child. After pleading not guilty on Wednesday, she’s being held on 500 dollars cash bail and will be back in court in December.
