Did Water Balloon-Tossing Justin Bieber Take His CSI Role One Step Too Far?

Viral marketing gone haywire or simply a case of an actor losing himself inside the skin of a character? Yesterday, CBS offered the first living proof of Justin Bieber’s acting prowess as a bombing suspect in their all-too-brief promo for the season premiere of CSI . Today, though, comes word that maybe the music superstar took his role as a police-attacking rogue (“I was just gonna scare the cops… not blow them up!”) a bit too far.

Joaquin Phoenix Still Here, Attached to Non-Financed Foot Fetishist Project

With the unsettling I’m Still Here hitting theaters today, it’s time to remember that Joaquin Phoenix is actually an actor. Or something. Perfectly pegged to his return to the spotlight — funny how these things work, right? — THR has published a rundown of all the near misses Phoenix has had over the course of the last year. Apparently his retirement from acting was also fake. Try to feign your surprise.

Everyone Welcome Back Manohla Dargis!

After a nearly two-and-a-half month hiatus, the gifted and beloved NY Times critic Manohla Dargis returns today with a pair of reviews, including a steadfastly tolerant glimpse at Joaquin Phoenix’s otherwise intolerable I’m Still Here : “Much of the movie involves Mr. Phoenix’s having, or more likely pantomiming, a meltdown, for which he puts on a really good show,” she notes, describing the star’s rejection of celebrity and rebirth as a rapper. “But the programmatic nature of his antics strongly suggests that he is self-consciously playing a role in a narrative, one that isn’t simply about him.” This calls for a toast! Coffee mugs up… [ NYT ]

Gwyneth Paltrow gets Country Strong in New Trailer

Studios still think audiences want to know the entire story of a movie before they see it. For evidence, just see the trailer for Country Strong , which stars Gwyneth Paltrow as an unstable country star who embarks on a comeback tour organized by her husband/manager (Tim McGraw). Said tour also features a young singer-songwriter (Garrett Hedlund) who Paltrow gets involved with, and a former beauty queen (Leighton Meester) who wants to be taken seriously as an artist.

Did Tony Blair Swipe Dialogue from His Character in The Queen?

Adam Brody on The Romantics, the Agony of Jennifer’s Body and the Ecstasy of Scream 4

Adam Brody showed up for our interview toting an old-model Nikon camera and some heady memories of his time on the set of The Romantics , a sprawling ensemble dramedy about marriage, unmarriage, post-college malaise and the families we make of our friends. Starring as Jake, the engaged would-be novelist who may or may not catch the cold-feet bug going around his pal Tom’s (Josh Duhamel) wedding (time alone in an attic with Malin Åkerman would do that to anyone, let’s be honest), Brody brings his customary wry deadpan to the subject of fading ambition. He elaborated on this and other topics — including the “surreal” qualities of Scream 4 and the failure of last year’s Jennifer’s Body — this week in New York.

Unmaking the Sausage: Hansel And Gretel: Witch Hunters is Supposed to Be a Joke, Right?

Haha, Hollywood… you guys . Always with the fake-franchise speculation, hype and innuendo, the inflation of a screenwriter’s pitch to a full-blown screenplay, the complete and total fabrication of cast and director negotiations, attachments and commitments… too funny. Especially Paramount’s Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters , starring Jeremy Renner and Noomi Rapace and co-produced by Adam McKay. Hilarious. Wait, what?
