Matt Rutler Cleared in DUI Case

How nice, and rare, to see celebrity scandals end well for a change. Turns out Christina Aguilera’s boyfriend Matt Rutler was NOT too drunk to drive after all. Rutler got popped for DUI back in March, but citing insufficient evidence to prosecute, the L.A. District Attorney determined he won’t be charged with a crime. That’s because his blood alcohol content was ultimately determined to be .06, or under California’s legal limit to operate a vehicle, .08. So why was he busted? Matt has even more to smile about now that he’s in the clear! Aguilera, a passenger in the car at the time, was busted for public drunkenness when officers determined she was too plowed to take care of herself . Matt Rutler was likely arrested on suspicion of DUI by association. Hours after the arrest, officials decided they would not pursue any charges against the singer. Now they’ve exonerated her man, as well. Good for them. Well, except for the whole downward spiral thing.

Gulf Spill Well is Officially "Dead", Obama Admin Says

Photo via Physorg And it’s about time. Over the weekend, the federal government finally deemed the Macondo 252 well, which had erupted after an explosion on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig , to be “effectively dead”. Thad Allen, the ex-Coast Guard Rear Admiral who had overseen the spill response during the disaster, made the official statement yesterday. He said that the well now poses “no continuing threat to the Gulf of Mexico,” according to the New York Times. Can that be true?… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Drive-In Theater Playing The Last Exorcism Erupts In Flames

Tulsa, OK drive-in theater, the Admiral Twin, burnt to a crisp yesterday while featuring a double-bill of The Last Exorcism and Predators . Fire officials have no leads yet as to what caused the renowned landmark, built in 1951, to razed by the damnable fires of perdition, but some think that dark forces may be at work. Which I don’t think is possible because not eight miles away, a theater playing Eat, Pray, Love is still recounting its unholy tale. More of the cindery remains of the Admiral after the break.

Blast from Past: Dick Cavett ‘Genuinely Ashamed’ of Americans for Opposing the Mosque

In Monday’s “Best of the Web Today” compilation , the Wall Street Journal’s James Taranto highlighted a New York Times online column posted Friday, from “superannuated erstwhile TV host Dick Cavett,” who “reports that the mosque controversy brought back childhood memories.” Cavett recalled World War II when he “heard an uncle of mine endorse a sentiment attributed to our Admiral ‘Bull’ Halsey: ‘If I met a pregnant Japanese woman, I’d kick her in the belly.’”          In the post provocatively titled “ Real Americans, Please Stand Up ,” as if those who disagree with him are not “real” Americans – at least they aren’t to the New York Times editors — Cavett then equated feticide with peaceful opposition to the mosque near Ground Zero: These are not proud moments in my heritage. But now, I’m genuinely ashamed of us. How sad this whole mosque business is. It doesn’t take much, it seems, to lift the lid and let our home-grown racism and bigotry overflow. We have collectively taken a pratfall on a moral whoopee cushion. Later he denigrated mosque critics as he derided “airborne sludge” from Rush Limbaugh: A heyday is being had by a posse of the cheesiest Republican politicos (Lazio, Palin, quick-change artist  John McCain and, of course, the self-anointed St. Joan of 9/11, R. Giuliani). Balanced, of course by plenty of cheesy Democrats. And of course Rush L. dependably pollutes the atmosphere with his particular brand of airborne sludge.

BP Gulf Oil Spill Static Kill Has Failed – Well Now Harder To Seal

(Video from July 30, but Cavnar is always ahead of the game) Drilling Experts Say BP Well Is Not Dead, Static Kill has Failed, and BP Needs To Answer Questions About Clouds Coming From Sea Floor. (Original post has great links) Oil Industry Expert Bob Cavnar has posted a series of blog posts over the last few days http://dailyhurricane.com/author/eljefebob/ that have escalated in charges that BP and the Federal Government BP and the Federal Government are deliberately providing the public with misinformation to cover up the fact that the static kill has backfired and made the BP Gulf Oil Spill well much harder to kill. In a few of those posts Bob Cavnar says BP needs to explain the huge clouds coming from the sea floor that I have pointed out here, here, here, here, and here. In his post BP: “Well is Static” US: “Oil is Gone” Nothing to See Here. Move Along he writes the following. At 1 am today, we got the “everything is fine” press release from BP proclaiming that the well, after the “textbook” static kill, is static. They studiously avoided the words “dead” or “killed”. Per usual, they also provided no further information. I was watching the feeds of the worsening leak coming from the lower flex joint flange at the moment I got the press release. Odd. If the well is static, then why is the wellhead leaking? Also, the leaking fluid is rising, indicating hydrocarbons, and continues even at this moment. This whole operation has given me the willies. … BP has violated this principle in spades by doing what they are doing. Now that they’ve proclaimed the well is “static”, they’ve also gone radio silent with no press conferences or technical McBriefings scheduled for today. Admiral Allen is doing a victory lap at this moment during the White House briefing, also not giving any data, besides just saying that it’s static with seawater. Again, if that was true, why is the wellhead leaking? To be clear, dead means dead. If it’s leaking oil, that means it’s not dead. … I’m sitting here watching oil leaking from a well that is supposedly dead. I’m listening to Admiral Allen saying the well is dead and to Jane Lubchenco and Carol Browner seriously contending that almost 4 million barrels of oil have disappeared. Is it just me, or are we watching the Matrix in real life? That post was followed up by Questions BP Needs to Answer in which he again alludes to the fact the BP and Government are not being transparent about the the success of the static kill and pointing out once again that oil is still leaking from the well and that there are the huge clouds coming from the sea floor. Since announcing success (sort of) of the static kill, MSM attention has dropped to virtually zero, though the well is obviously far from static, judging from the huge clouds in the water around the wellhead and manifold, as well as numerous ROVs surrounding the wellhead, providing no feeds to the public. The media has payed virtually no attention to these feeds and has asked no questions of Adm Allen or BP. BP has stopped briefing the public daily. The problem is that there are lots of questions that remain unanswered. Here’s what I want to know: * Is the well dead? * What is the pressure on the well? Now? * If the well is open to the surface, what is that pressure? * … * How do you know all the cement went down the casing? * … * Why is the flex joint flange leaking? * Why are the ROV feeds no longer provided in a decipherable resolution? * Why are some ROV feeds not being provided? * … * Why are clouds of debris continuing to obscure the view several days after the well was supposedly “static”? Until these questions are answered by BP, we have no real information to tell us that the well is dead, or even safe. As long as they continue to stonewall critical data, I’ll only continue to believe that the well is not “static” or safe. Not only are the ROV feeds high pixelated to the point the screens can not be read BP has still not shown the BOP where a methane leak was discovered just inches from the well head and BP is playing with the lighting to hide huge clouds shooting out of the sea floor and has even been caught applying filters in real time on the feeds to remove hydrates shooting out of the sea bed from the video feeds. Florida Gulf Oil Spill: Plans to Evacuate Tampa Bay Area Are In Place : Veterans Today

Hernando County Political Buzz Examiner By Maryann Tobin Note to readers: This reprint of Maryann Tobin’s news story has over 14,700 reads as of June 24th. UPDATED: June 14, 2010 Gulf Oil Spill 2010: Plans to evacuate Tampa Bay area are in place. As FEMA and other government agencies prepare for what is now being called the worst oil spill disaster in history, plans to evacuate the Tampa Bay area are in place. The plans would be announed in the event of a controlled burn of surface oil in the Gulf of Mexico, or if wind or other conditions are expected to take toxic fumes through Tampa Bay. This practice has been used by the US Forestry service, when fire and smoke threaten the health and well being of people. The elderly and those with respiratory problems would be more susceptible to health risks, in the event of a controlled burn. Estimates of the rate of BP’s Deepwater Horizon oil spill have varied. Independent scientists now suggest that the true spill rate, before the riser pipe was cut off in June, was between 20,000 and 50,000 barrels a day. Since the April 20th explosion, which resulted in the sinking of the Deepwater Horizon rig, there have been more than a million gallons of chemicals poured into the Gulf of Mexico in efforts to break up the spill. The chemicals have come under scrutiny because of their own toxic nature. It is not certain if the massive slick will have to be set on fire near Tampa Bay, but the possibility has not been ruled out. BP has been using controlled burnes as a way to contain the oil spill since the crisis began. Plans to do additional controlled burns around the well site were announced by Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen at a briefing in early June added by: Monkey_Films

Obama’s Leadership Deficit

Editor’s Note : The following originally appeared at Andrew Breitbart’s Big Hollywood . Appearing on CNN with Anderson Cooper, film director Spike Lee implored President Obama to infuse his handling of the Gulf oil spill with more emotion. Demonstrating the astute analysis we have come to expect from the director, Lee implored Obama to “one time, go off.” Perhaps he is of the same mind as Bill Maher, that the authentic black man is one who is always armed and resorts to violence and loud-talking when things do not go his way. (Note to self: On the way home from the liquor store, I must pick up my Glock from the gun shop.) Both Lee and Maher seem to share the opinion of a great many progressives that emotion is the same as leadership and that problems are most easily solved by decree. It is no mistake that following criticism by Lee and others, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs was declaring to the media that he had “seen rage from him [President Obama].” Apparently, when Obama gets angry, he clinches his jaw. Soon after the Gibbs press conference, the President showed up in Louisiana, walked the beach in shirt sleeves and then, with clenched jaw, he spoke of growing up in a culture where the water was sacred. The administration meant this to be a demonstration of leadership. However, in some quarters, this is also known as street theatre. Still seeking to enhance his “street cred,” the president then appeared on morning television, lowered his pants down below his buttocks, flashed his gold teeth, and announced that he was looking for some tail to kick. In the meantime, the oil continues to gush from the well and the resulting slick is now the size of a small state. As it turns out, sending the attorney general to Louisiana and ordering BP to “plug the damn hole” and then “going off” on national television didn’t solve the problem. If the poll numbers are to be believed, it would also appear that Americans are not impressed with how much booty a president can kick, especially if it is not accompanied by decisive action, which actually addresses the problem. Over the course of the last two months, the president has had several opportunities to take bold and determined action–to be a leader. He has dithered instead. A few of the missed opportunities: Fire-booms that were supposed to be a part of any oil-spill response were missing in action. When they were finally located there were too few to do much good. In the event of a major spill, federal responders had pre-approval to begin burning oil. They waited more than a week before doing a test-burn and then stopped. Experts have suggested that had the burning begun right away, 90% of the oil could have been burned away before it spread. Thirteen countries have offered the United States the advantage of their technical skills. To date, the Obama administration has declined to take advantage of all of this experience and expertise. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers delayed the building of protective sand-berms until they could study the issue. The administration finally approved six berms, but only agreed to pay for one of them. Government officials say they want to first see if they work. Of course, by that time building more berms won’t do any good. Two months into the crisis, Admiral Thad Allen, the U.S. official in charge of the Gulf of Mexico crisis, (or is he?), is still talking about asking Congress for a waiver of the Jones Act, which would allow foreign vessels involved in the crisis to operate in American waters. However, that may not do much good. Louisiana boat owners who have volunteered to aid in clean-up efforts are complaining that bureaucratic red-tape is keeping them out of the water. On a positive note, the president did create another government commission. Leadership of the statesman variety–as opposed to the shirtsleeves and furrowed-brow-look-of-concern variety–would have the president with a large pair of scissors cutting through the red tape. A leader scours the private sector for the most knowledgeable folks he can find and asks for their help. He gets on the phone with our allies and says, “Yes! Please send me your experts!” He says to the governors of the Gulf States, “Tell me what you need.” Leadership is putting aside political agendas and mobilizing the power of the executive office in order to solve an immediate crisis. Leadership doesn’t always need big speeches or street corner bravado. Leadership can be quiet; it can be cool and determined. But if it isn’t focused and it isn’t active, it ain’t worth the price of admission to a “Spike Lee Joint.”
