NBC Chief Jeff Zucker Open to Political Run, Bringing Couric Back to Network

We’ve heard the knocks on NBC and the institutional bias that exists in its network – from the subtle spin in its flagship network’s news coverage at NBC to the over-the-top bias at its cable news channel MSNBC. So maybe the man behind the curtains at NBC Universal would like to be more overt with his opinions – as a politician? On MSNBC’s Aug. 25 “Morning Joe,” Jeff Zucker, president and CEO of NBC Universal, addressed both his possible political aspirations and bringing back one of the network’s former star personalities. Host Joe Scarborough asked Zucker where his political interests were at this stage. “You know Joe – look, politics is something I’ve always had an interest in,” Zucker said. “It is something I’ve always thought about. It is not something that is on my current radar. It’s not something I’m thinking about in the next few years, but it is something that I would always consider. I think – I love politics. I would love to give back. I would love to serve. I would love to do something, but it is not imminent. It’s nothing now.”  That set Zucker up for a question from Scarborough – if he was holding out to bring Couric back to the peacock network where she was a fixture at NBC’s “Today” from 1991 until 2006. “You are going to wait until you get Katie Couric back at NBC then you’re going to get into politics?” Scarborough asked.  It’s been no secret the Katie Couric project at the “CBS Evening News” has not produced the results that were anticipated. Couric’s broadcast just tied its all-time low in total viewers with an average of 4.89 million tuning in during the five days. Zucker dodged Scarborough’s inquiry, but Scarborough continued to press him on the topic.  ZUCKER: I think those are two separate issues there. SCARBOROUGH: Is Katie coming back to NBC? ZUCKER: Well I think she is fully ensconced in a job today and she’s happy where she is. SCARBOROUGH: No, she’s not. Come on. You’re talking like a politician. She hates it over there. ZUCKER: Oh, I don’t know that’s the case. SCARBOROUGH: No, it’s the case. MIKA BRZEZINSKI: That’s not politically correct. SCARBOROUGH: Since she doesn’t like it where she is — ZUCKER: I thought we were talking politics here for a second. BRZEZINSKI: I was going to ask you about the mosque. SCARBOROUGH: This is your first press conference here buddy. So since she doesn’t like where she is, since you have a great relationship with Katie, would you like Katie Couric back at NBC? Zucker relented, saying he would be open to the possibility of Couric returning to NBC in some capacity. “I always said that, look Katie would be a great addition wherever she is,” Zucker said. “If the time were right, I think that’s something we would look at. But she’s under contract now, and I think she’s happy where she is, whether you believe it or not, so I’m not going to wade into that controversy.”

NBC’s Todd Frets Obama’s Effort to ‘Tackle’ Nation’s Problems Allowed Enemies to Defame Him as Muslim

NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams cited a “stunning number” from “a reputable pollster” (Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life and the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press) – which discovered “just under 20 percent of the American people believe the President is a Muslim” when “he is not” – to justify a full explanation from Chuck Todd on the mischaracterization of Barack Obama. “Look, let’s be clear,” NBC’s chief White House correspondent declared, “President Barack Obama was born in the United States and he is a Christian.” Without pointing out how confusion and ignorance about Obama’s religious affiliation extends beyond just Republicans and conservatives (41 percent of Democrats and 31 percent of liberals “don’t know” Obama’s religion), Todd fretted: “Ever since Mr. Obama became a national political figure, some of his political enemies have fanned the flames of religious prejudice by trying to make people believe the President is a Muslim.” Todd despaired that Obama’s focus on his job had left him vulnerable to abuse: During the campaign, Team Obama repeatedly refuted these charges with a special Web site they created called FightTheSmears. Well, when he took office, the anti-Obama campaign continued, but the White House tackled a slew of other issues, and efforts to refute those other attacks took a backseat. Completing his delivery of White House talking points, Todd asserted: “Ironically, Brian, during the campaign, some of the President’s political enemies attacked him for the way he practiced Christianity in Chicago where his minister – the Reverend Jeremiah Wright – was a controversial figure.” Over on FNC, however, Major Garrett noted that “while Mr. Obama’s political opponents are more likely to believe he’s a Muslim, uncertainty has seeped in the President’s political base.” In his piece for Special Report with Bret Baier, Garrett featured a soundbite from Alan Cooperman, the Associate Director of the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life, who also appeared in Todd’s story. In the clip run on FNC, Cooperman observed: Less than half of Democrats say the President is a Christian [46%]. Less than half of African-Americans say the President is a Christian [43%]. Less than half of people who give Obama positive job approval ratings say he’s a Christian. Indeed, Pew’s report, “Growing Number of Americans Say Obama is a Muslim” ( Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life version; Pew Research Center for the People & the Press version) found: A new national survey by the Pew Research Center finds that nearly one-in-five Americans (18%) now say Obama is a Muslim, up from 11% in March 2009. Only about one-third of adults (34%) say Obama is a Christian, down sharply from 48% in 2009. Fully 43% say they do not know what Obama’s religion is…. Among Democrats, for instance, 46% say Obama is a Christian, down from 55% in March 2009. The belief that Obama is a Muslim has increased most sharply among Republicans (up 14 points since 2009), especially conservative Republicans (up 16 points). But the number of independents who say Obama is a Muslim has also increased significantly (up eight points). There has been little change in the number of Democrats who say Obama is a Muslim, but fewer Democrats today say he is a Christian (down nine points since 2009)…. But even among Democrats, fewer than half (46%) now identify his religion as Christian, down from 55% last year. On Thursday night, ABC’s World News skipped the poll numbers, but the CBS Evening News squeezed in a short item from Harry Smith in a newscast devoted almost entirely to Katie Couric in Afghanistan: The White House said today President Obama is a Christian and prays every day. A spokesman felt is necessary to make that clear after a poll came out showing a significant number of Americans believe the President is Muslim. 18 percent think so. That’s up from 11 percent last year. From the Thursday, August 19 NBC Nightly News: BRIAN WILLIAMS: A new opinion poll from a reputable pollster in this country just out today is getting a lot of attention tonight because it contains a stunning number. Just under 20 percent of the American people believe the President is a Muslim – he is not – on top of a growing number of people who believe he’s foreign-born – and he is not. We go behind these numbers tonight with our chief White House correspondent Chuck Todd who’s in our Washington newsroom. Chuck, good evening. CHUCK TODD: Good evening, Brian. Look, let’s be clear. President Barack Obama was born in the United States and he is a Christian. But ever since Mr. Obama became a national political figure, some of his political enemies have fanned the flames of religious prejudice by trying to make people believe the President is a Muslim. In fact, with some of these same political enemies who helped ignite another phony claim that the President wasn’t born in the United States. Well, during the campaign, Team Obama repeatedly refuted these charges with a special Web site they created called FightTheSmears. Well, when he took office, the anti-Obama campaign continued, but the White House tackled a slew of other issues, and efforts to refute those other attacks took a backseat. In March 2009, according to Pew Research, about half the country – 48 percent – correctly identified the President as a Christian, 11 percent believed he was a Muslim, and about a third – 34 percent – had no idea of his faith. Now these results are even more striking. Only 34 percent correctly told Pew pollsters that Mr. Obama is a Christian, while a whopping 18 percent – or nearly one in five Americans – say he is a Muslim, and 43 percent have no idea of his faith at all. Well, earlier today, I asked Alan Cooperman at Pew Research to explain why, in the face of clear evidence that the President is not a Muslim, that a growing number of Americans believe he is. ALAN COOPERMAN, PEW FORUM ON RELIGION AND PUBLIC LIFE: In the absence of information from the White House and from the President himself about his faith, about his faith life, about him going to church, messages from others – innuendo and rumor included – are able to maybe gain currency. TODD: Ironically, Brian, during the campaign, some of the President’s political enemies attacked him for the way he practiced Christianity in Chicago where his minister – the Reverend Jeremiah Wright – was a controversial figure. Now, today the White House said the President is a, quote,  “committed Christian,” and prays every day. But aides said they were not surprised by the poll findings because, as one put it, quote, “The President doesn’t wear his religion on his sleeve,” Brian.

Only CBS Reports on Salary Gap Between Public and Private Employees

While ABC and NBC ignored a Monday USA Today report that found a significant gap in compensation between public and private sector employees, on Tuesday’s CBS Evening News, correspondent Sharyl Attkisson provided a full story: “While many Americans have suffered pay cuts or job losses, one group is bucking the trend – federal workers.” Attkisson described how the “analysis finds that federal employees have gotten bigger pay and benefit increases than private employees for nine years straight.” She cited numbers from the report: “Federal salaries have grown 33% faster than inflation. Their pay and benefits average $123,000, up 37% since 2000. Private workers average $61,000, up just 8.8% over the same time.” In addition, Attkisson included a sound bite from Cato Institute budget analyst Tad Dehaven: “So you have Wall Street, you have big oil, and now you have federal civilians.” She went to note: “And the bonuses are flowing. CBS News has learned your tax dollars funded $95.8 million in airport security TSA bonuses last year. A $35,000 bonus to the head of the agency.” In concluding her report, Attkisson gave the public sector perspective: “Defenders of federal salaries say they reflect the higher skills and education often required for their jobs and many are paid more because they’ve stuck with their jobs so long.” She added: “President Obama has ordered a freeze on bonuses for 3,000 political appointees and is asking for the smallest pay hike in more than a decade for 2 million other federal workers, 1.4%.” Given that the poor economy, government spending, and the deficit are key issues in the midterm elections, it’s interesting that neither ABC or NBC deemed a story about overpaid government workers to be worthy of coverage. Here is a full transcript of Attkisson’s August 10 report: 6:39PM ET KATIE COURIC: For those fortunate enough to have a job in this tough economy, there’s a growing gap in salary between government employees and those who work in the private sector. More on that now from Sharyl Attkisson. SHARYL ATTKISSON: While many Americans have suffered pay cuts or job losses, one group is bucking the trend – federal workers. A USA Today analysis finds that federal employees have gotten bigger pay and benefit increases than private employees for nine years straight. UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: It made me think, man, I should be a federal employee. ATTKISSON: Federal salaries have grown 33% faster than inflation. Their pay and benefits average $123,000, up 37% since 2000. Private workers average $61,000, up just 8.8% over the same time. TAD DEHAVEN [BUDGET ANALYST, CATO INSTITUTE]: So you have Wall Street, you have big oil, and now you have federal civilians. ATTKISSON: And the bonuses are flowing. CBS News has learned your tax dollars funded $95.8 million in airport security TSA bonuses last year. A $35,000 bonus to the head of the agency. UNIDENTIFIED MALE: They’re really overpaid. UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Right now everything should be – should be a freeze across the board until we really get the economy back up and running. ATTKISSON: Federal employees see things differently. UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I definitely don’t think I’m being paid too much. UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I think I’m paid a fair wage, definitely. ATTKISSON: Defenders of federal salaries say they reflect the higher skills and education often required for their jobs and many are paid more because they’ve stuck with their jobs so long. UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I’ve been working for the government 21 years. ATTKISSON: President Obama has ordered a freeze on bonuses for 3,000 political appointees and is asking for the smallest pay hike in more than a decade for 2 million other federal workers, 1.4%. Katie? COURIC: Sharyl Attkisson. Sharyl, thank you very much.

Networks Ignore Missouri Voters’ Rejection of ObamaCare, Instead Celebrate Obama’s Birthday

In the first voter referendum on ObamaCare, Missourians on Tuesday overwhelmingly (by 71 to 29 percent) backed Proposition C which called upon the state to enact a statute to “deny the government authority to penalize citizens for refusing to purchase private health insurance,” an outcome the St. Louis Post-Dispatch described as “rebuking President Barack Obama’s administration.” On Wednesday night, however, the ABC, CBS and NBC evening newscasts skipped the bad news for President Obama – yet all found time to celebrate his 49th birthday.   (The Missouri repudiation of a central tenet of ObamaCare came a day after another setback for ObamaCare which the newscasts also ignored: A federal district judge in Richmond rejected the Obama administration’s quest to block Virginia’s lawsuit challenging Congress’ jurisdiction to mandate individuals buy health insurance.) “At the White House today, they sang to the President,” ABC anchor Diane Sawyer touted over a graphic which declared it Obama’s “Big Day.” Viewers were treated to one stanza of “Happy birthday to you!” before Sawyer related: “He says we’ve watched him go gray, and the photographs since the campaign do show a little speckle in that hair.” With his wife and one daughter in Spain and the other daughter at camp, “the President [is] flying solo tonight, heading to Chicago to spend his 49th birthday as a bachelor, with only ‘First Dog’ Bo to keep him company,” NBC’s Savannah Guthrie sulked, though “Mr. Obama did get a serenade from winners of citizen medals he handed out at the White House today.” After reciting Michelle Obama’s extravagant resort destination in Spain, Guthrie ended on a heartwarming note: And we can report tonight that the President got two calls today. Mrs. Obama and Sasha called from Spain, and Malia, who’s on that summer camp sleep-away camp for a few weeks, gets just one call during that time at camp. She saved it for today and called her father to wish him happy birthday. From the Wednesday night, August 4 newscasts: ABC’s Word News: DIANE SAWYER: At the White House today, they sang to the President. VIDEO OF GROUP: Happy birthday to you! SAWYER: It is his birthday. He is now 49. He says we’ve watched him go gray, and the photographs since the campaign do show a little speckle in that hair. He is going to Chicago alone tonight to dine with friends. His oldest daughter is away at summer camp. His wife and youngest daughter Sasha have traveled to a resort in Spain with a group of friends from Chicago, moms and daughters. CBS Evening News: KATIE COURIC: President Obama is spending the night in his own home for a change. He flew to Chicago today to celebrate his 49th birthday, but only first dog Bo went with him. Michelle Obama and daughter Sasha are on vacation in Spain. Malia is away at camp. So the President planned a birthday dinner with friends. NBC Nightly News: LESTER HOLT: President Obama is in his hometown of Chicago tonight. It’s his 49th birthday, but it’s kind of an unusual one. His family is nowhere in sight. NBC News White House correspondent Savannah Guthrie is traveling with the President and joins us from the Windy City tonight. Savannah, good evening. SAVANNAH GUTHRIE: Good evening, Lester. Well, the President is here in Chicago for some Democratic Party fundraising and an event at a Ford plant tomorrow, but he will have a birthday dinner with friends tonight. No family around, though. Daughter Malia is at summer sleep-away camp, and the First Lady and daughter Sasha are on a lavish trip to Spain. The President flying solo tonight, heading to Chicago to spend his 49th birthday as a bachelor, with only “First Dog” Bo to keep him company. Mr. Obama did get a serenade from winners of citizen medals he handed out at the White House today. But the union group he addressed earlier in the day did not let him eat cake. PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA: I’m a little disappointed there wasn’t a cake, though. I’m going to have to talk to the Secret Service about that. RICHARD TRUMKA, AFL-CIO: You got to talk to those guys because they nixed the cake. OBAMA: They’re probably eating it right now. TRUMKA: They are. GUTHRIE: Right now Mrs. Obama and younger daughter Sasha are a world away, on a five-day, mother-daughter vacation with a group of friends in the coastal resort town of Marbella, Spain. The family is staying at the luxury Ritz Carlton retreat Villa Padierna which features five restaurants, a spa and private beach. All the amenities expected of a five-star hotel favored by celebrities, including privacy. KATE MAXWELL, CONDE NAST TRAVELER: So we understand the Obamas have booked 30 rooms. Suites go up to $6500 a night, so they’re looking at a pretty hefty bill at the end of the four days they’re going to spend there. GUTHRIE: The Obamas will pay their own way, but the cost of Mrs. Obama’s traveling staff and security detail will be borne by American taxpayers. And the money she spends will boost the Spanish economy – something the White House declined to get into today. ROBERT GIBBS: She is a private citizen and is the mother of a daughter on a private trip. GUTHRIE: A European vacation for a First Lady is not unprecedented, nor is sniping about it. MYRA GUTIN, FIRST LADY HISTORIAN: Jacqueline Kennedy was criticized for going to Greece and to Italy, so certainly Michelle Obama, the criticism of Michelle Obama would not be a first. GUTHRIE: Well, the First Family also plans to spend a weekend in the Gulf Coast this month as well as spend 10 days on Martha’s Vineyard. And we can report tonight that the President got two calls today. Mrs. Obama and Sasha called from Spain, and Malia, who’s on that summer camp sleep-away camp for a few weeks, gets just one call during that time at camp. She saved it for today and called her father to wish him happy birthday, Lester.

CBS ‘Evening News’ Bemoans Lack of Diversity in FDNY

On Monday’s CBS Evening News, anchor Katie Couric praised the heroism of the New York City Fire Department but fretted: “…a federal judge says something is missing in their ranks: Diversity.” Correspondent Jim Axelrod began a report on the topic by noting: “Fire Captain Paul Washington has a big problem with his department.” Washington declared the FDNY to be “all-white, lily white.” Axelrod described how “Eight years ago, the fire department was 92 percent white and only 2.8 percent black, in a city that was 24 percent black. A disparity that remains largely unchanged.” A sound bite was featured from Columbia Law School Professor Suzanne Goldberg, who like Couric, noted the department’s heroism, but went on to describe the lack of diversity as a “singular embarrassment.” Touting how “a federal judge agreed” with Goldberg, Axelrod explained: “…the hiring test to become one of New York’s bravest was not just discriminatory, but illegal. [The judge] ordered the city to fix it.” As Axelrod mentioned the judge’s ruling, a few sample questions from the supposedly discriminatory test appeared on screen. One set of questions asked applicants to respond to a particular firefighting scenario: “What would be the most direct entrance for firefighters to take to save the children?…The probable cause of the fire was?…How many ways can firefighters enter the house?” Axelrod never cited any specific criticisms of the entrance exam. Even so, a clip was played of Washington claiming: “Blacks don’t fare as well as whites on this test, probably due to the disparity in education.” Axelrod added: “Now the judge says the city has been dragging its feet and tightened the screws, appointing a special master to ensure New York does what big cities like Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Boston, and Miami did long ago when they were sued.” Acknowledging opposition to the judge’s ruling, Axelrod mentioned: “FDNY Deputy Chief Paul Mannix doesn’t think New York needs to follow their example.” In an exchange with Mannix, Axelrod pressed: “Look at Los Angeles. Look at Philadelphia. Look at Boston.” Mannix replied: “Quotas. Quotas. Quotas.” Axelrod insisted: “Whatever your method, they corrected racial imbalance.” Mannix responded: “By using quotas, and we are against quotas.” Axelrod continued: “Mannix believes the current FDNY test focuses too much on producing a racially diverse department and not enough on identifying the strongest candidates regardless of race.” Mannix explained: “You’re asking me to make my job more dangerous to – to satisfy a social engineering experiment.” Axelrod’s report concluded with another sound bite from Goldberg: “I find it shocking that the fire department looks like it does today. And the city is fighting the decision and threatening appeal rather than going ahead and giving the city the fire department that it deserves.” A final sound bite of Washington was also played: “I want to see black New Yorkers share in this job, because, as I say, it’s not a good job, it’s a great job.” Axelrod proclaimed: “The only thing Paul Washington wants to change about this great job is the way New York City decides who gets it.” Here is a full transcript of the segment: 6:44PM KATIE COURIC: The fire department here in New York City is one of the most respected in the world and second only to Tokyo in size. The FDNY has well over 11,000 firefighters and officers, and their heroism on 9/11 and on many other occasions is legendary. But as Jim Axelrod reports, a federal judge says something is missing in their ranks: Diversity. JIM AXELROD: New York City Fire Captain Paul Washington has a big problem with his department. PAUL WASHINGTON: This fire department has been all-white, lily white, for almost 150 years now. And I mean, it has to end. AXELROD: Eight years ago, the fire department was 92 percent white and only 2.8 percent black, in a city that was 24 percent black. A disparity that remains largely unchanged. A group of African-American firefighters sued. SUZANNE GOLDBERG [COLUMBIA LAW SCHOOL]: The fire department in New York on the one hand is tremendously heroic, and the whole world knows about its heroism. And on the other hand, we have this kind of singular embarrassment. AXELROD: Last January, a federal judge agreed, ruling the hiring test to become one of New York’s bravest was not just discriminatory, but illegal. He ordered the city to fix it. WASHINGTON: Blacks don’t fare as well as whites on this test, probably due to the disparity in education. AXELROD: Now the judge says the city has been dragging its feet and tightened the screws, appointing a special master to ensure New York does what big cities like Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Boston, and Miami did long ago when they were sued. They now have much greater diversity, but FDNY Deputy Chief Paul Mannix doesn’t think New York needs to follow their example. Look at Los Angeles. Look at Philadelphia. Look at Boston. PAUL MANNIX: Quotas. Quotas. Quotas. AXELROD: Whatever your method, they corrected racial imbalance. MANNIX: By using quotas, and we are against quotas. AXELROD: Miami, in particular, expanded recruitment by targeting young minorities still in public schools with high school EMT training classes. Today they have firefighters like Maurice Kemp to show for it. That’s Chief Maurice Kemp, the department’s first African-American in charge. MAURICE KEMP: Like all other major city departments, it doesn’t come without a struggle. I mean, we have to be conscious of the fact that we need to be diverse. AXELROD: Mannix believes the current FDNY test focuses too much on producing a racially diverse department and not enough on identifying the strongest candidates regardless of race. MANNIX: You’re asking me to make my job more dangerous to – to satisfy a social engineering experiment. AXELROD: Mannix doesn’t officially speak for the city, but both the fire department and the mayor declined our request for an interview. In a statement, the city said that it disagrees with the court’s findings that these tests were discriminatory and intends to appeal. The city says next time it hires, the incoming class will be one-third minority. But no new firefighters have been hired in the last two years and no one knows when the city will hire again. GOLDBERG: I find it shocking that the fire department looks like it does today. And the city is fighting the decision and threatening appeal rather than going ahead and giving the city the fire department that it deserves. WASHINGTON: I want to see black New Yorkers share in this job, because, as I say, it’s not a good job, it’s a great job. AXELROD: The only thing Paul Washington wants to change about this great job is the way New York City decides who gets it. Jim Axelrod, CBS News, New York.

CBS Shoehorns Palin ‘Refudiate’ Gaffe Into Story About NYC Mosque

On Tuesday’s CBS Evening News, correspondent Jeff Glor managed to squeeze criticism of a gaffe made by Sarah Palin into a story on a controversial plan to build a mosque just blocks from Ground Zero in New York City: “…on Twitter she called on peaceful Muslims to ‘refudiate’ the plan….Liberal bloggers pounced on the made-up word and Palin retracted her tweet.” While describing the opposing sides in the debate, Glor noted how Palin “upped an already raucous debate” with her comments on Twitter. After showing her tweet on screen, Glor played a clip of her using the word “refudiate” during a television appearance. He noted her response to criticism: “‘Shakespeare liked to coin new words, too.'” Glor then clumsily shifted back to the topic at hand: “Grammatical debates aside, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has come out firmly in support of the plan.” Here is a full transcript of Glor’s July 20 report: 6:45PM KATIE COURIC: There’s a heated debate going on here in New York over a plan to build a mosque and Muslim community center near the World Trade Center site. And as national correspondent Jeff Glor reports, just about everyone is weighing in. UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN: I speak before you as a concerned citizen of New York. JEFF GLOR: Opponents call it a mosque in the worst possible place. UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN: This building, in particular, should be turned into a museum. GLOR: Supporters call it a cultural center in the best spot to encourage understanding. DARISA DARWISH [MOSQUE ADVOCATE]: If a mosque were built, then you guys would know what Islam was about. GLOR: At issue: This building in lower Manhattan, the proposed site of a 13-story community center and Islamic prayer space. UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN: This is the Muslim community’s effort to rebuild lower Manhattan. GLOR: The controversy? It’s only two blocks from Ground Zero. This week, Sarah Palin upped an already raucous debate when on Twitter she called on peaceful Muslims to ‘refudiate’ the plan, calling it ‘a stab in the heart for America.’ SARAH PALIN: They have power in their words. They could refudiate what it is that this group is saying. GLOR: Liberal bloggers pounced on the made-up word and Palin retracted her tweet but not her sentiment, saying ‘Shakespeare liked to coin new words, too.’ Grammatical debates aside, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has come out firmly in support of the plan. MICHAEL BLOOMBERG: Everything the United States stands for and New York stands for is tolerance and openness. What is it you’re hope that this center will do?              UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN: My hope is that this center will attract a lot of people who don’t know about Islam. GLOR: Do you feel like the debate is shifting at all? TIM BROWN: Yeah. It’s on a national stage now. GLOR: But Tim Brown, a former New York City firefighter who lost 93 colleagues on September 11, calls the proposal a slap in the face. Your message today to the developers behind this? BROWN: Stop it. Stop hurting the families. Everyday there’s some stories in the newspaper, they’re hurting the families again. They don’t deserve it. These American families have paid too much. GLOR: Brown and others, including New York gubernatorial candidate Rick Lazio, are calling for an investigation into the financing behind the $4.8 million building purchase. Their concerns spurred in part by comments the center’s imam made to ’60 Minutes’ in 2001, just weeks after the 9/11 attacks. IMAM FEISAL [ABDUL RAUF, PARK ST. PROJECT DEVELOPER]: I wouldn’t say that the United States deserved what happened. But the United States’ policies were an accessory to the crime that happened. UNIDENTIFIED WOMAN: Because that is the point- GLOR: Citing anti-Americanism, opponents are pushing to have the building declared a landmark, which would make it far more difficult for any Muslim center construction to begin. Jeff Glor, CBS News, New York.

CBS Continues to Pressure Congress to Extend Unemployment Benefits

On Saturday’s CBS Evening News, anchor Jeff Glor decided what should be at the top of Congress’s agenda as it returned from the July 4th recess: “Congress returns to Washington next week to face a big backlog of unfinished business, and topping the list is the future of unemployment benefits.” In a report that followed, senior White House correspondent Bill Plante chided elected officials for going on vacation without resolving the issue: “It’s been ten days since senators went home for their July 4th vacation without extending unemployment benefits ….They’ve now run out for more than 1.3 million people and the Labor Department says that number could rise to 3 million by the end of this month.”   Plante then touted Democrats blaming the GOP for the inaction: “As he campaigns for Democrats, the President paints the lack of new benefits as Republican heartlessness ….There were protests this week from labor unions against some Senate Republicans. This one in Lexington, Kentucky directed at the GOP leader Mitch Mcconnell, calling for action when the Senate returns next week.” Plante noted the Republican response to such claims: “But Mcconnell blames Democrats for refusing to cut spending to pay the $34 billion cost of the extension.” Saturday’s broadcast was taking over where CBS had left off prior to the holiday. As Congress adjourned on July 1 , fill-in Evening News anchor Scott Pelley proclaimed: “We have decided to start with the 1.3 million Americans whose unemployment benefits have run out, stopped cold, in the last 30 days. And we’re starting there because the U.S. Senate went on vacation today without solving the problem.” Correspondent Chip Reid then reported: “So who’s fault is that? On the surface, it appears Senate Republicans are to blame. Led by Mitch McConnell, they killed the bill with a filibuster. But McConnell points the finger at Democrats, especially Leader Harry Reid, for refusing to pay for the bill in this age of sky-high deficits.” Unlike the July 1 coverage, Saturday’s Evening News briefly highlighted the debate among economists over whether unemployment benefits even should be extended. Plante explained: “Some economists contend that unemployment benefits did not help that much in earlier recessions.” A clip was played of University of Maryland Professor Peter Morici citing past abuse of such benefits. Plante then noted: “Others believe the time paid for unemployment benefits is when the economy improves. They argue that the extension is needed right now.” A clip of Moody’s Analytics chief economist Mark Zandi was played: “It’s the most effective stimulus that can be provided….They get a check and they spend it and it helps the economy immediately.” Despite that back and forth, Plante concluded his piece by anticipating an extension of benefits: “When the Senate returns next week they will bring the benefit extension to another vote, but not until West Virginia’s governor appoints someone to fill the Senate seat of the late Robert Byrd. That should give the Democrats enough votes to pass the extension.” Also on the economic front, on Tuesday’s Early Show, Plante reported the results of a new CBS News poll , which “shows that the public, when it comes to the economy, has very little confidence in either Congress or the President.” He described how 54% of respondents disapprove of the President’s handling of the economy and that a majority believe the recession will last at least another two years. However, Plante tempered the bad news for the White House by noting: “He’ll [Obama will] blame Republicans for the policies which led up to the recession. And it may be small comfort for Democrats, but the public has just as low an opinion of Republicans in Congress.” Here is a full transcript of Plante’s July 10 Saturday Evening News report: 6:35PM ET JEFF GLOR: Congress returns to Washington next week to face a big backlog of unfinished business, and topping the list is the future of unemployment benefits. Senior White House correspondent Bill Plante has more tonight. BILL PLANTE: It’s been ten days since senators went home for their July 4th vacation without extending unemployment benefits. ROLAND BURRIS [SENATOR, D-ILLINOIS]: The motion is not agreed to.                                  BILL PLANTE: They’ve now run out for more than 1.3 million people and the Labor Department says that number could rise to 3 million by the end of this month. As he campaigns for Democrats, the President paints the lack of new benefits as Republican heartlessness. BARACK OBAMA: They said no to extended unemployment insurance for folks who desperately needed help. PLANTE: There were protests this week from labor unions against some Senate Republicans. This one in Lexington, Kentucky directed at the GOP leader Mitch Mcconnell, calling for action when the Senate returns next week. But Mcconnell blames Democrats for refusing to cut spending to pay the $34 billion cost of the extension. MITCH MCCONNELL: The only reason the unemployment extension hasn’t passed is because our friends on the other side simply refuse to pass a bill that does not add to the debt. PLANTE: Some economists contend that unemployment benefits did not help that much in earlier recessions. PETER MORICI [UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND]: Unemployment was a terribly intractable problem and we had big benefits. And many folks abused those benefits to stay out of the labor force to do other things they were interested in doing. PLANTE: Others believe the time paid for unemployment benefits is when the economy improves. They argue that the extension is needed right now. MARK ZANDI [CHIEF ECONOMIST, MOODY’S ANALYTICS]: It’s the most effective stimulus that can be provided. Many of these people are very hard pressed. They get a check and they spend it and it helps the economy immediately. PLANTE: When the Senate returns next week they will bring the benefit extension to another vote, but not until West Virginia’s governor appoints someone to fill the Senate seat of the late Robert Byrd. That should give the Democrats enough votes to pass the extension. Jeff. GLOR: Bill Plante at the White House tonight. Bill, thank you.

Saving Us from Ourselves: ‘Evening News’ Justifies Federal Tanning Tax

So you want to crawl under a high-powered lamp and bake your skin so that it has a brownish-orangish glow to it, even though there are potential health consequences. Well, the federal government is here to save you and, according to “CBS Evening News,” that’s not a bad thing. The new federal 10 percent tax on indoor tanning has provoked odd alliances – such as when Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., told “Snooki” from MTV’s “Jersey Shore”   through Twitter   he would “never tax your tanning bed.” But on the June 30 broadcast of “Evening News,” CBS correspondent Michelle Miller made the case why the government should. “Gisselle Colon wanted to be bronze and beautiful. She sunbathed and bought a membership to a tanning salon several years ago. Last month, things turned ugly,” Miller said. “This is her scar. In May, Gisselle was diagnosed with melanoma, one of the deadliest and most preventable forms of cancer.” (h/t @KenShepherd ) And according to Miller, guess what – exposure to large doses of UVA radiation increases the likelihood you’ll wind up with skin problems. “An estimated 30 million Americans use tanning beds every year – 2.3 million are teenagers. It costs about $17 a visit. A 10 percent tax will raise that price by $1.70,” Miller continued. “It’s unclear whether that will be enough to discourage indoor tanners. What is clear, new research finds indoor tanning before the age of 35 increases the risk of melanoma by 75 percent. Why? Tanning booths emit those UVA and UVB radiation. UVA causes the burns, UVB the tan. Booths emit mostly UVA, but it can be at doses 12 times stronger than the sun.” This tax will hurt small business owners, according to the National Federation of Independent Business . The NFIB says approximately 19,000 “mom and pop” small businesses could be affected by this tax and those businesses will likely spend an average of more than $74 an hour to comply with federal tax paperwork burdens. “The first present we get under this new health care law takes effect this week – and that is the tanning tax,” Karen Harned of the NFIB said   at The Heritage Foundation’s Bloggers Briefing   on June 30. But this didn’t stop Miller from making the obligatory case for the tanning salon regulation, or even a ban. “New public service announcements take aim at teen tanning,” she said. “So too, are lawmakers. Thirty-two states now restrict it, for example, by requiring parental permission in person. And New York State is considering banning indoor tanning outright for anyone under 18.”

No Palin Setback Too Small for Couric Who Skips How Palin ‘Acted in Good Faith’

Demonstrating that no setback for Sarah Palin which can be portrayed as a rebuke is too insignificant or relevant for Katie Couric, she made time on Thursday’s CBS Evening News to inform her viewers about a disputable technical violation of arcane law: One little word will cost Sarah Palin a small fortune. Today, state investigators in Alaska said a legal defense fund she set up while she was Governor was illegal. They said the use of the word “official” on the fund’s Web site implied it was endorsed by the office of the Governor. Palin’s lawyer says she will return the fund’s nearly $400,000. Unmentioned by Couric? How Timothy Petumenos, the investigator/counsel for the Alaska Personnel Board which issued the ruling, absolved Palin of blame. “Petumenos found the 2008 GOP vice presidential nominee acted in good faith and relied on the advice of lawyers when setting up the fund,” the Anchorage Daily News reported in an afternoon posting. PDF of the board’s report , which noted: “Governor Palin complied fully with AS 39.52.210(a) by declining to take any proceeds from the Trust once the Complaint was filed pending resolution of this matter.”

ABC Frets Over Pickle McChrystal Has Put Obama Into: Look ‘Petulant’ or ‘Weak’

ABC, CBS and NBC all led Tuesday night with multiple stories on the “firestorm” over disrespectful coments by General Stanley McChrystal and his aides about President Obama and other administration officials, but ABC’s Diane Sawyer and George Stephanopoulos particularly despaired over the position in which McChrystal has put Obama. Sawyer fretted that Obama “now faces a mind-boggling choice,” before Stephanopoulos kvetched “the President has really been put in a real political box” and “a very painful political position,” forcing him to choose between “looking thin-skinned and petulant” or “looking weak.” CBS’s Katie Couric didn’t go that far, but she was disturbed by the burden on Obama: “This controversy is about the last thing the President needed on his plate as he deals with two wars overseas and another against an invasion of oil off the gulf coast.” Sawyer asked chief political correspondent/Good Morning America co-host Stephanopoulos: “What are you hearing, George?” He worried about Obama’s plight: That a debate has been raging inside the administration since this article hit last night, and that the President has really been put in a real political box. If he fires McChrystal after this, he risks looking thin-skinned and petulant. But if he accepts these words, which some consider insubordination, then he risks looking weak. So it’s a very painful political position right now for the President. Sawyer had led the June 22 World News: Good evening. There was a giant explosion heard around the world today, and it had nothing to do with weapons. Everything to do with words. General Stanley McChrystal, the commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, gave an interview to a magazine. And in it, he and his aides took aim at everyone from the President to the Vice President to Senators and diplomats. The General has been summoned to the White House by President Obama, who now faces a mind-boggling choice. Does he fire the man central to the war right before a major battle? Jake Tapper takes us inside a stunned and furious White House.
