Left-wing ‘One Nation’ Rally Organizer Has Long History of Highly Offensive Statements – Will Media Report?

In the runup to Glenn Beck’s “Restoring Honor” rally on the National Mall last month, a number of prominent media ouetlets hyped accusations of racism targeting a small-time blogger who advised visitors to steer clear of some of the more dangerous neighborhoods in Washington. Now it has come to light that a prominent NAACP employee, Curtis Gatewood, also a “field director” for the upcoming One Nation march – organized by the NAACP and various labor unions, including the AFL-CIO and the SEIU – has made numerous anti-American and anti-Semitic statements in the past. Will the media call One Nation out for this one individual’s statements as they did the Restoring Honor rally? Will they paint this employee as representative of the rally’s attendants, also as they did with Beck’s event? Or will they ignore or downplay these statements, despite their dramatically more egregious nature? David Stein, who blogs at Yes, But, However, compiled an exhaustive list of offensive and inflammatory statements made by Gatewood, who identifies himself on his Facebook page as the Second Vice President of the North Carolina NAACP State Conference. Gatewood is also, according to this flyer , a North Carolina “field director” for the One Nation event. Among Gatewood’s more offensive remarks was this one, from a July 4 post on his Facebook page: “TO AMERICA – HAPPY 4TH OF YOU-LIE! ‘THE HOME OF THE BRAVE [or did you mean to say …OF THE ‘SLAVE?’]’; ‘THE LAND OF THE FREE [or did you mean to say .. OF THE ‘TREE’ where my ancestors were hung for recreation?]’; ‘SWEET LAND OF LIBERY’ (sic) [or did you mean to say ‘CHEATED LAND FROM BIGOTRY’? THERE WILL BE NO ‘INDEPENPENCE (sic) DAY’ until the ‘TRUTH .. MAKE YOU FREE’! MEANWHILE HAPPY YOU-LIE.” Gatewood also made numerous offensive statements about black Republicans, including calling RNC Chairman Michael Steele “HNC – Head Negro in Chains.” He also wrote the following in a letter to the editor of a local newspaper: Negroes are being rented throughout our state and country. In my opinion, the best national example of a ‘rented Negro’ is former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell. This Negro was rented for the sole purpose of helping the incompetent and distrustful President Bush sell the world an illegal intent to violently remove Saddam Hussein from the office of Iraqi president and wrongfully invade/occupy Iraq. Now that the war is on and Colin Powell’s Negro-lease has been terminated, if Powell is seen near the White House he might be arrested. But even worst than ‘rented Negroes,’ are those Negroes such as U.S. Secretary of State Condi Rice, U.S. Supreme Court Judge Clarence (‘Uncle’) Thomas, and several thousands of other certain so-called ‘educated’ Negroes throughout the state and nation who have been bought and paid for! Even as the Supreme Court recently and rightfully ruled that the U.S. run concentration camps in Guantanamo Bay are illegal, Bush could count on his bought-and-paid-for Negroes to ‘stay the course.’ Gatewood also has a penchant for blaming catastrophic events on political decisions, policies, or individuals he does not agree with. He claimed that God “woke Americans up on 9/11” and claimed that Hurrican Katrina was “God’s scolding rebuke” for “radical Bush appointments and more disastrous/illegal policies.” Those sorts of comments usually garner heated criticism when uttered in conservative corners. Indeed, plenty of Gatewood’s comments appear to be highly offensive to left-wing sensibilities. For instance, Gatewood suggested on a North Carolina radio show that a “driving force” behind immigration to the Untied States is a desire to sell drugs to black people. Gatewood claimed that “Jews” and the Fox News Channel are trying to get Obama killed. He also channeled more run-of-the-mill left wing criticism, claiming that the Tea Party movement is “driven by the same philosophy as the KKK – ignorance and racial hatred.” At least Keith Olbermann agrees with him on that last one . In sum, Gatewood has made some astoundingly ignorant and offensive claims. I emailed him asking for comment. He replied thusly: Other than the good news of a train that is headed to Washington being driven by the engine of love, hope, equal opportunity, jobs, education and peace, I have no comment. This country no longer has the time for the divide and conquer strategies which are being desperately played by those who seek to stop the change Americans voted for. I am happily inspired by the spirit and vision of “One Nation”! Again I ask, any man, woman, or child, who seeks to “work together” in the pursuit of meaningful jobs, quality education for all children, afordable housing, love, peace, and justice for all, should seize this moment to join me and tens of thousands of others. It is time for us to let our LOVE do the talking. Enough of the debates about who is or who is not a “racist”. Let’s let our LOVE do the talking. When I asked about the vast chasm between these comments and his numerous hateful, divisive, and offensive (and occasionally racist) statements as documented on YBH, he replied simply: “Have a nice day Mr. Markay. Good try. 🙂 Thanks!” Neither the NAACP nor One Nation returned requests for comment. So will the media even mention these unbelievable statements from an official organizer of the One Nation event? Remember, many reporters seized on the seemingly innocuous advice of blogger Bruce Majors to steer clear of areas of Washington with, historically, higher crime rates. “Racism accusations fly on eve of Glenn Beck rally” blared an Associated Press headline about the reaction to Majors’s blog post. “Tea Party Blogger Accused of Racism in Beck Post” read another AP headline . Chris Matthews and Rachel Maddow pushed the meme on their respective MSNBC shows. Washington Post columnist Eugene Robinson said the post was intended to “scare white people.” And of course, lefty blogs, including the Huffington Post, Think Progress, and Talking Points Memo, were quick to paint Majors as a racist, and as representative of the larger crowd of Beck fans attending the rally. Of course we can argue all day about whether Majors’s map was rational or reasonable (I happen to live well within the area he advised visitors to steer clear of), but it should be perfectly clear that his post was comedy compared with the venomous statements made by Gatewood in recent years. And while Majors had absolutely no affiliation with Beck or his event, Gatewood is a field director for One Nation, and the vice president of the NAACP’s North Carolina conference. In other words, his views have a far greater bearing on the One Nation event than Majors’s did on the Restoring Honor rally. If One Nation comes and goes without any media chatter about Gatewood or his comments, it will demonstrate yet another double standard of which conservatives bear the brunt.

Tribune’s Matea Gold: Jon Stewart Rally ‘Could Draw Tens of Thousands’

Just two days before Glenn Beck’s August 28 “Restoring Honor” rally, the Washington Post published an article about how the rally would “be a measure of the tea party’s strength.” “When Fox News and talk radio host Glenn Beck comes to Washington this weekend to headline a rally intended to ‘restore honor’ to America, he will test the strength – and potentially expose the weaknesses – of a conservative grass-roots movement that remains an unpredictable force in the country’s politics,” staffer Amy Gardner argued in the opening paragraph of her August 26 story. Gardner’s article is but one example of the media’s skeptical attitude prior to the Beck rally. Yet just days after two Comedy Central hosts announced mock rallies for October 30 on the Mall, the liberal media are expecting that Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert can easily draw a large crowd.  I noted the breathless anticipation of Newsweek’s Daniel Stone last Friday . Now it seems that Matea Gold of the Washington bureau of the Tribune Company is also decidedly optimistic. In her 13-paragraph article, accessible at LATimes.com , Gold quoted a few folks who plan on attending and took the Facebook RSVPs on face value as a signal about potential attendance: As of Wednesday afternoon, more than 132,000 people planned to attend, according to the event’s Facebook page, while satellite rallies were being organized in Chicago, Seattle, Austin and other cities. Nowhere in her article did Gold give ink to any skeptic who would rain on the Comedy Central parade by suggesting the initial “hey, that sounds cool” interest by Stewart/Colbert fans would fail to flesh out into actual attendance after they consider the cost and hassle of attending the event.

Joe Scarborough Hints He Would Like to See Bill Clinton Run Again for President – If Only It Were Constitutional

MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough – who when a Republican congressman voted to impeach President Clinton – seems to believe that a former President should be able to legally  run for office again after taking “a term or two off.” His comments followed a gushing slew of praise for former President Bill Clinton, and he noted that many viewers “are just sitting there thinking ‘Why can’t [Clinton] run for President in a couple of years?'” “It seems so short-sighted, just because the Republicans were upset that FDR was President for four terms,” Scarborough complained of the 22nd Amendment, ratified during Truman’s second term but passed out of Congress four years earlier in March 1947. Republicans did control both houses of Congress then, but the amendment would have excluded then-President Harry Truman and was supported by some Democrats. Co-hosts of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski conducted a glowing  interview of the former president at the Clinton Global Initiative in New York City. Topics ranged from Clinton’s charitable work around the world to the 2010 elections to Newt Gingrich. Scarborough worked in some sharp criticism of his former GOP colleague and former Speaker Gingrich, due to his recent comments about the New York City mosque. Yet Scarborough had nothing but praise reserved for Clinton.”Listening to you talk right now, you’ve always been known as the brightest, the first-class, however you want to put it – but you’ve had the ability the past decade to go all around the world, start this initiative, understand issues – you’ve understood issues better than anyone in Washington, when you were President.” Scarborough, treading carefully, asked the former president why it wouldn’t make sense for someone to run again for President. “I’m just wondering, not for you, but doesn’t it make sense for this country to say, ‘Okay, let a guy serve, or a woman serve for eight years, then they can take a term or two off – but then if they have something to give back to America in the terms of leadership, give them that opportunity’?” President Clinton agreed with Scarborough, but added that an amendment shouldn’t apply to him, but to future candidates for the Presidency. “If we change the Constitution, it shouldn’t apply to me. That is, it shouldn’t apply to anybody that served, it should all be forward-looking, so no one would think it was personal.” The interview about Clinton’s organization became a slobbering love-fest for the Democratic president, conducted by the former Republican congressman. Scarborough, in describing the conflict resolution between the GOP Congress and Clinton’s Presidency in the 90’s, asked Clinton this gem: “Could you explain to Washington, DC, on both sides – how did you do that? How did you rise above it? How did everybody learn to work together, even if they fought each other like hell? A transcript of this segment, which aired on September 23 at 8:17 a.m. EDT, is as follows: JOE SCARBOROUGH: You know, it’s a unifying concept, too. Because you speak to the small-government conservative in me, because conservatives always complained that government can’t do everything, that government can’t – it’s actually Kennedy-esque, “Ask not what your country can do for you.” You’re saying “We’re minding the gap. We’re not expecting the federal government to do everything. We’re expecting you to help.” (…) MIKA BRZEZINSKI: Well I actually think the formula that you just described – not left/right, not right/wrong, and bringing people together from both sides – could apply beyond the Clinton Global Initiative. It could apply in Washington. BILL CLINTON: I think so, too. I think that what we ought to talk about – I urged my fellow Democrats to tell the American people that the country wasn’t back to work, nobody was happy, but according to all the numbers, the recession bottomed out and it was job-time, showtime. So the only real issue in this election should be what is each party going to offer to get the country moving again, which idea is most likely to work. I think that ought to be the debate. What are we going to do, who’s more likely to do it? And I think – I believe they should say “Give us two more years to do this. If it doesn’t work, you can throw us all out. We’ve got another election in two years, throw us all out. We’re in a deep hole, couldn’t get going in time.” That’s what I – I think we ought to all be willing to be judged by what ___ does not empower other people. SCARBOROUGH: I’ve talked to you about this before. We go out and give speeches all across the country, and sometimes to progressive crowds, and I always start with when I ran in ’94, I couldn’t stand Bill Clinton’s image on TV! And they’ll all rustle out there. I’ll say “I came up to Washington, DC,” and I’ll go through this, and as I explain the story away, well he didn’t really like us that much, either. But look what we accomplished together. Look what we – we learned. I learned so much from those five years, and they were tough, tough years for you, and for Hillary, and for a lot of people. Balance – Terry was talking about this. We balanced the budget four years – for four years, the first time that happened since the 1920’s, reformed welfare, created 22 million new jobs. And those were two sides that didn’t exactly love each other. Could you explain to Washington, DC, on both sides – how did you do that? How did you rise above it? How did everybody learn to work together, even if they fought each other like hell? BILL CLINTON: Well first of all, you’ve got to know the difference between something that’s real and something that’s show. I remember one day, Senator Lott – who was a Republican senator – was on one of these Sunday morning shows. And he called me a “spoiled brat,” or something like that. And one of our guys in the staff called and said “You know what Trent Lott said?” I said, “Don’t worry about that.” He said, “How could you say that?” I said, “Let me tell you what happened. Trent Lott agreed to be on a Sunday morning show, before he thought about it. He was exhausted all weekend, because we had been working long hours. He got up early in a bad mood, and somebody goaded him, and he took the bait.” That’s all. And I called Lott, and he said ‘Oh, my God you’re calling me.’ I said, “No, I’m calling to tell you I’ve already forgotten about this.” He said, “Why?” I said, “Because you shouldn’t have done this show, you were too tired. And you woke up exhausted, you were mad you did this show, somebody goaded you, and you took the bait.” He said “That’s exactly what happened.” That’s what happens when you know somebody as a person, as well as a political opponent. When you cut people a little slack, and you realize that doesn’t have anything to do with the job, and you just work on getting the job done. When we hung Lott’s portrait in the Capitol, Newt Gingrich and I spoke for him. And we talked about the fights, but then we talked about what we achieved. That’s what I think we have to do. We’ve got to get back into “We’re all hired hands here.” And we’ve got to – it’s a good think to have a philosophy. I could give you – if you look at the stuff we’re debating here, I could give you a more conservative and a more liberal position about how to deliver health care in Haiti, or re-set-up the schools, or promote economic growth. But in the end, what matters is half the kids have never been to school – do they go to school or not? They’ve never had a health care system at all – will they have one? They’ve never had a government that functions, 17 percent of the government was killed on earthquake day – are they going to have one? And that’s – somehow we need to drive our political debate toward that. SCARBOROUGH: But we seem to be losing ground. You brought up Newt Gingrich. I talked to your wife and you and others about what I learned – that you can disagree without being disagreeable – I made a lot of mistakes in the 1990’s, I think a lot of people did. But you brought up Newt Gingrich. Here’s a guy that should know better. And yet he’s going out there comparing one of the great religions of the world to Nazism, Kathleen Sebelius to Stalin – it’s really disappointing that in some ways we seem to be losing ground. CLINTON: Well, but I think part of that is – you saw what happened in these Republican primaries, he might want to run for President, and frankly, it’s a version of what he did in ’94, as opposed to what he later came to do after we had the huge fight over the government shutting down and then we all calmed down and went to work. And I think, at least I know he knows better. And that’s not a good thing. SCARBOROUGH: Doesn’t that make it worse? MIKA BRZEZINSKI: I think that does make it worse. SCARBOROUGH: I think that’s what depresses me about it is, he’s such a bright guy, and he’s got so many gifts – CLINTON: But he sees all these other people being rewarded for it, and so I think that’s what – BRZEZINSKI: He sees the payoff. CLINTON: Hm-hmm. (…) SCARBOROUGH: Let me ask you a Constitutional question. Because sitting here listening to you talk – I know there are a lot of people that are opinion leaders and shapers that watch this show, that are just sitting there thinking “Why can’t he run for President in a couple of years?” CLINTON: There’s a little Constitutional – SCARBOROUGH: I know. I was just going to say, does it make sense – because listening to you talk right now, you’ve always been known as the brightest, the first-class, however you want to put it – but you’ve had the ability the past decade to go all around the world, start this initiative, understand issues – you’ve understood issues better than anyone in Washington, when you were President. But to go around the world for a decade, all of this knowledge – and I’m just wondering, not for you, but doesn’t it make sense for this country to say, “Okay, let a guy serve, or a woman serve for eight years, then they can take a term or two off. But then if they have something to give back to America in the terms of leadership, give them that opportunity. It seems so short-sighted, just because the Republicans were upset that FDR was President for four terms. CLINTON: Well, that’s what I believe the rules should be. But it isn’t what it is. I think if I were writing – there’s a very strong argument for telling – for saying you shouldn’t serve three terms in a row. Because by the time you’ve appointed everybody, there’s just – people get relaxed, there’s too much opportunity for people, even if not for corruption, just for bad things happening for the taxpayers. (Unintelligible) But with life expectancy being so long, and people being alert until they’re in their seventies, and sometimes in their eighties – look at Paul Volcker – he’s mid-eighties, you know, he might as well be 40 years old, in some ways. I think there’s an argument for that. But if we change the Constitution, it shouldn’t apply to me. That is, it shouldn’t apply to anybody that served, it should all be forward-looking, so no one would think it was personal. But, you know, that’s kind of what I think it should be.   SCARBOROUGH: It makes so much sense.

China is #1 in Fish Catch and Consumption, With Room to Grow

Photo: Flickr , CC Can Our Oceans Handle It? China is number one in a lot of things, good and bad. One of these is the quantity of fish consumed, and the quantity of fish caught (which isn’t always the same, as some countries import or export a lot of fish). But, sadly for our oceans, China has reached number 1 without even being a particularly fish-hungry country per capita (unlike Japan), so there is still a lot of room for it to grow in that regard. Will our oceans be able to handle it?… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Lady Gaga’s Meat Dress: Celebs Weigh In

‘She’s a courageous chick,’ Mary J. Blige said at New York fashion event. By Amy Wilkinson Lady Gaga on stage at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards Tongues are still wagging over Lady Gaga’s BBQ-defying meat dress from Sunday’s Video Music Awards , and it seems everyone has an opinion on the flesh frock. So who better to weigh in on Lady Gaga’s look than the honorees at US Weekly ‘s 25 Most Stylish New Yorkers event in New York City? While many stars lauded the “Bad Romance” singer for her sartorial bravery, most added that they’d never actually don such a rare outfit. “I thought: courageous,” host Mary J. Blige said with a laugh when asked her opinion of Lady Gaga’s meat dress. “She’s a courageous chick.” Actress and frequent “Glee” guest star Kristin Chenoweth couldn’t have agreed more. “I thought it was incredible,” she said. “Actually it was an incredible design. I wouldn’t be caught dead in it, but go girl!” One lucky celeb got to see — and smell — Franc Fernandez’s design up close and personal. “I was sitting right behind her [at the VMAs],” record producer Sean Garrett said. “That’s probably the best-smelling meat [I’ve ever smelled].” One person not coveting Garrett’s prime seat was talk-show host Wendy Williams. “I wouldn’t have been the one wanting to sit next to her,” she said. “With the hot lights and the hot skin, she was actually sizzling right there, and I understand she has a line of perfume coming out, and that would smell like A1 Sauce.” Though most celebrities found Gaga’s get-up humorous, “The City” star and People’s Revolution owner Kelly Cutrone was introspective, saying she found the frock frivolous in light of global hunger issues. “I personally think it’s not a good idea when people are starving in the world,” she said about food as fashion. “One person’s dress is another person’s dinner.” What do you think about Lady Gaga’s meat dress? The Moonmen have all been handed out and the stars have gone home, but there’s plenty of 2010 MTV Video Music Awards news, interviews, behind-the-scenes scoop, party reports and more still to come, so keep it locked on MTVNews.com. Michelle Obama’s Burden and the Obamas’ Hard Hearts

It’s tough being the wife of the most powerful man in the world, just ask Michelle Obama. Carla Bruni, who seemed to reveal her distaste for the First Lady in previous pictures, reveals Michelle’s whiny comments in her recent book [Aside: why is a sitting world leader’s spouse writing a tell-all? What tawdriness.] Anyway,  here’s what was allegedly said: Michelle Obama thinks being America’s First Lady is ‘hell’, Carla Bruni reveals today in a wildly indiscreet book. Miss Bruni divulges that Mrs Obama replied when asked about her position as the U.S. president’s wife: ‘Don’t ask! It’s hell. I can’t stand it!’ Details of the private conversation, which took place at the White House during an official visit by Nicolas Sarkozy last March, emerged in Carla And The Ambitious, a book written in collaboration with Miss Bruni. Well, of course the job is difficult-prepared meals, jet-setting, specially designed clothes, lecturing the American people on eating apples is exhausting work. Also, it’s awful. Not out-of-a-job awful. Not repo awful. Not foreclosure awful. Not hungry awful. But, yeah, being First Lady is awful. Michelle Obama and that husband of her’s just don’t quite cast an empathetic image, do they? NPR kvetches about this problem : Is President Obama too rational to be likable? Obama comes across as so self-contained that his personality almost seems like a bubble around him – perhaps even more so than the bubble that surrounds any president, thanks to the Secret Service and all the trappings of the White House. “Obama’s analytic style of decision-making and his unwillingness to show emotion makes it hard for people to relate to him,” says Stephen J. Wayne, a government professor at Georgetown University. If a president is in power during hard times, his relative likability won’t matter so much as his overall job performance. But every president gets judged to a greater or lesser degree according to his personality. Perhaps no president would be doing well in the polls with unemployment near double digits throughout his term. But Obama’s inability to connect on an emotional level with many people has been an additional drag on his approval ratings. Oh yes. It’s the President’s cerebral nonchalance that’s making connection so difficult. How about this idea: Michelle and Barack Obama just don’t care. When an entitled person feels perpetually ripped off, they tend to feel less empathy for those they perceive as ripping them off. So, that lack of empathy; that attitude of being put-upon? That’s genuine no matter how the lib press wants to  rationalize  it away. Stories like these, from  the Politico  help nothing: The White House is fighting back against claims its offshore drilling moratorium will cause dramatic job loses along the Gulf Coast with a new report that says most jobs aren’t gone forever. Only 8,000 to 12,000 jobs will be lost along the Gulf Coast , and most will return once deepwater drilling resumes, says the report to be presented to a Senate panel Thursday. That’s right. ONLY 12,000 families will face the desperation of a lost livelihood and face the stress and strain of keeping their homes during this economic crisis. ONLY. Do the Obamas not grasp the gravity of the economic situation in America today? Do they not grasp their enormous educational, cultural and social privilege long before they ever lucked into the presidency? Or, are they so brainwashed by their own imagined persecution complex that they simply cannot see their remarkable lives for what they are: lucky and fortunate. Michelle Obama is not burdened. The woman doesn’t know from burden. And Barack Obama is not mis-perceived by the American people. They are seeing his cold nature for what it is: hard hearted. No amount of fawning press can obscure what is becoming more obvious. UPDATED: Michelle Obama’s office denies Carla Bruni’s revelation .

Today Co-Hosts Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb Endorse New Bloomberg Smoking Ban

In the fourth hour of Thursday’s Today show NBC’s Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb took a strong stance against the right to smoke, pretty much everywhere, as both endorsed Mayor Mike Bloomberg’s proposed ban that goes several steps further than just restaurants. During the opening chat session of the hour, Kotbe announced: “So some good news in New York City…Mayor Bloomberg is considering banning smoking in all places like parks, beaches and Times Square.” Gifford also praised the move declaring that ” Second-hand smoke is a bigger killer than asbestos or a lot of other things” but later seemed to contradict herself as she proclaimed: “I’m all for personal rights. I’m becoming more and more of a libertarian the older I get.” The following is the full exchange as it was aired on the September 16 Today show: HODA KOTB: So some good news in New York City if you are against people smoking in public. Mayor Bloomberg is considering banning smoking in all places like parks, beaches and Times Square. [On screen headline: “Butt Out, NYC Mayor Proposes Ban On Smoking At Parks, Beaches”] KATHIE LEE GIFFORD: Outside of public buildings, everywhere? Everywhere? All public places? KOTB: That’s, I’m, I have to say I’m kind of for that. GIFFORD: Well remember the outcry when he first banned it in restaurants? Everybody said, “Nobody is gonna, it’s gonna hurt everybody. Nobody’s gonna go to restaurants any more.” KOTB: Right. GIFFORD: Really? People get hungry. KOTB: Yeah. They still go. GIFFORD: But, but they smoke outside. You know it’s so funny that, that would be announced today. Because yesterday I left our building and some of our best friends, around here, do smoke. And they’ve been battling with it! KOTB: Sure. GIFFORD: They would really love to be able to quit but they can’t so far. KOTB: Yeah. GIFFORD: As I walked out, I mean it was into, and it was a beautiful day yesterday- KOTB: Gorgeous. GIFFORD: -into this, this like, this- KOTB: Cloud. GIFFORD: More than that. Yeah, like a heavy duty- KOTB: Cloud. GIFFORD: And, and, and my, my hair stunk the whole way home. KOTB: Yeah, yeah. GIFFORD: I was gasping for breath because I’m, you know- KOTB: Asthmatic. GIFFORD: -I’m highly allergic to it. So it’s, it’s one thing to do it to yourself, and I’m sorry anybody is addicted because it’s, a terrible, terrible addiction. But second-hand smoke is a bigger killer than asbestos or a lot of other things as well. KOTB: Right and I do, there are some states that do not ban it in restaurants. I think there are 26 that do, around the country. So a lot of them still don’t. GIFFORD: Yeah. KOTB: I think a lot of people are starting to get on the bandwagon. But there is nothing worse than sitting on the beach, like enjoying the- GIFFORD: The fresh air! KOTB: And then there comes this waft of smoke and literally, and you can’t really move away. Because you move and the wind changes or you go somewhere, like you’re gonna be in it, no matter what. GIFFORD: Yeah. KOTB: But I’ll bet you this is gonna have, there will be a lot of outcry over this. GIFFORD: There will be outcry, there will be. Maybe it’ll help some people give it up better. You know they won’t have any option- KOTB: Right. GIFFORD: But the, the other thing is you know, the thing is about a personal right. I’m all for personal rights. I’m becoming more and more of a libertarian the older I get. The more they take away our rights, the more I’m saying, excuse me, wait a minute! But I don’t think any right that we have, should infringe on the rights of other people. KOTB: Right. GIFFORD: And that’s the basic problem with the, with the smoking. KOTB: I agree with that. I agree with that. GIFFORD: Okay.

Laser and Satellite Technology Maps How Much Carbon the Amazon Rainforests Can Hold

Photo via alextorrenegra While we know that deforestation means a loss of carbon storage , it’s difficult to quantify just how much carbon can still be stored in what is left of the Amazon rainforest. Standing in the way is both practicality issues (each tree trunk must be measured to estimate its stored carbon) and the cost of accurate accounting. ‘The Hunger Games’ May Have Its Director

‘Seabiscuit’ director Gary Ross is in talks to helm adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ dystopian young adult novel. By Amy Wilkinson Gary Ross Photo: Todd Williamson/ WireImage The director reaping is nearing an end: Gary Ross is in talks to direct the film adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ critically acclaimed young adult novel “The Hunger Games.” Lionsgate, the studio co-producing the film along with Color Force’s Nina Jacobson, is in early talks with the director, Deadline reports. Over the past few weeks, the studio has been meeting with a who’s who of directors including “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” helmer David Slade, Sam Mendes, Andrew Adamson, Rupert Sanders and Susanna White. Ross is an Oscar-nominated director and writer, known for his work on “Seabiscuit,” “Pleasantville” and the comedy “Dave.” Deadline emphasized that Ross has not been locked in, but that he is the studio’s choice, pending negotiations. “The Hunger Games” is the first installment of a trilogy focusing on 16-year-old Katniss Everdeen.
