Arab TV Director: ‘Muslim Anger’ Over Ground Zero Mosque Protests is ‘Fabricated’

The director of the popular Arab-language TV station Al Arabiya says that the Muslim world is not angry over increasing American opposition to a proposed mosque at Ground Zero, and that any claims to the contrary are attempts to “fabricate a conflict.” “The lack of a unified stance throughout the Islamic world should be seen as response to the current attempt by some to ‘fabricate’ a conflict, claiming that Muslims are angry with the refusal to build a mosque in such a controversial setting,” wrote director Abd Al-Rahman Al-Rashid in an Aug. 29 column in a London daily. The column was translated and posted on the website for the Middle East Media Research Institute. Some news outlets have claimed that opposition to the Ground Zero mosque may “fuel Islamic extremism” in the Muslim world. “Opposition to the center by prominent politicians and other public figures in the United States has been covered extensively by the news media in Muslim countries,” reported a New York Times article on Aug. 20. “At a time of concern about radicalization of young Muslims in the West, it risks adding new fuel to Al Qaeda ‘s claim that Islam is under attack by the West and must be defended with violence, some specialists on Islamic militancy say.” And the NPR reported on Aug. 24 that “Experts worry the controversy surrounding an Islamic center near ground zero in Lower Manhattan is playing right into the hands of radical extremists.” But the director of Al-Arabiya TV – a competitor of Al Jazeera – said that the idea that the mosque controversy is inflaming anger across Muslim countries is nonsense. Director Al-Rashid argued that opposition to the Ground Zero mosque has not caused “a public reaction similar to what has been witnessed in dozens of previous cases that have provoked Muslims” – such as the 2006 publication of a cartoon mocking the Islamic prophet in a Danish newspaper, which set off violent protests across the Muslim world. The TV director noted that there have not been demonstrations related to the mosque in Arab countries, that imams have not addressed the controversy during their sermons and that the issue has not been taken up by Islamic religious and intellectual institutions. He also said that many Muslims don’t want the mosque to be built, and understand why the project may be insensitive. “[F]or many Muslims, building a mosque near the same land upon which three thousand people were killed by Muslims is not a necessity. Most comments from readers rejected the idea of building the mosque for fear of it turning into a symbol of hatred against Muslims,” wrote Al-Rashid. And while the TV director said that the organizers of the mosque have “good intentions,” he also added that they have acted “without taking into account the serious nature of [constructing] a mosque at such a particularly sensitive time and place.” This is not the first time Al-Rashid has spoken out over the Ground Zero mosque controversy. On Aug. 16 he wrote in another column that “Muslims never asked for” the proposed mosque at Ground Zero, and “do not care about its construction.” “I can’t imagine that Muslims [actually] want a mosque at this particular location, because it will become an arena for the promoters of hatred, and a monument to those who committed the crime,” he wrote. “Moreover, there are no practicing Muslims in the area who need a place to worship, because it is a commercial district. Is there anyone who is [really] eager [to build] this mosque?”

Washington Whispers: Ted Kennedy an Innocent Chappaquiddick Victim

This is one story that U.S. News & World Report’s Washington Whispers might want to keep to a low whisper or risk even more ridicule than what they are already receiving. Paul Bedard, writing in Washington Whispers, quotes Kennedy’s biographer and former girlfriend who claim that Ted was really an innocent victim of the Chappaquiddick accident. Here is Kennedy biographer Burton Hersh making the case for Kennedy as merely a lousy driver: Now, a year after Kennedy died, his lifelong biographer Burton Hersh, armed with fresh interviews with Kennedy’s mistress at the time, tells Whispers that the whole July 1969 episode  should have been handled as a simple crash, leaving the senator’s legacy untainted. “It was a car accident,” he says. “Ted was a terrible driver. He never paid much attention to where he was going.” “He took a tremendous blow on the head,” says Hersh. In interviews following the crash, Kennedy displayed confusion and amnesia, he says. Wasn’t Ted married to Joan Kennedy at the time of the accident? No matter. Perhaps his biographer figures it is better to show that Kennedy was unfaithful rather then culpable in Mary Jo Kopechne’s death. In any event, loyal lifelong biographer Hersh continues to play a sympathetic note on his violin: “If the thing had been handled properly, the first thing they would have done is put him in a hospital. Then they would have said he was a victim of an auto accident and didn’t know what he was doing and couldn’t be held responsible for anything that happened really after that, which would have been a fair explanation,” says author-journalist Hersh, who knew Kennedy since they were classmates at Harvard. “But instead, he felt terribly guilty about the whole thing … tried to take responsibility and … just confused the issue.” Darn that mighty Ted Kennedy moral compass. That is what got him into so much trouble. Oddly enough, despite his laughable defense of Kennedy, Hersh admits that his type of woman is a…bimbo: As for Kennedy being interested in the straight-laced Kopechne, Hersh says that was highly unlikely. “She wasn’t Ted’s kind of babe. She was a long way from being a bimbo.” Most of the Washington Whispers readers don’t seem to be buying this bizarre rewrite of history judging from their posted remarks : If I had done the same thing I would have gone to jail for 4 years for manslaughter. Trying to rewrite Teddy’s shameful acts won’t cut it.  Read “Senatorial Privilege” published shortly after the accident and inquest. Provides an hour by hour investigatorial record. ‘Nuff said. I wish every reader of this article had a personal army of lackeys like the Kennedy’s do to come up with trash like this to protect them. Yeah, so confused he swims back to his hotel, goes to his room and gets some sleep before reporting the accident. He knew what he had done and what he was doing. Anyone with honor would have admitted his transgressions.  In my neighborhood, and absent political connections, we call this tragic event failure to render aid, driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of a felony accident, and he should have been charged with murder.  And now the bonus comedy punchline from the article to explain away Kennedy’s dissolute activies: He also brushes off tales that Kennedy was a playboy more than a lawmaker. “Kennedy’s central project was accomplishing as much as he could in public life. And all of the things, including the drinking, the women, and the rest, were sort of supportive activities. They were amusements.”  Burton Hersh: historical airbrusher with the special comedic touch.

Freeland: Obama ‘Should Probably Have the Balls’ for Another Stimulus

It’s been a challenging week for President Barack Obama.  His vacation ended.  He was forced to rebuke questioning reporters with a cutting, “We’re buying shrimp, guys.”  And now Reuters global editor-at-large Chrystia Freeland, accurately described recently by Media Research Center president Brent Bozell as “a deeply devoted Obama groupie,” is referencing what Obama-endorsed former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich (D) termed testicular virility. On today’s CNN Newsroom, anchor Ali Velshi suggested a second stimulus might be needed, an idea Chrystia clearly liked: FREELAND: Well, I think you’re absolutely right. I mean, look, he is a Democrat. If you talk to Democratic economists — one of them, for example, Laura Tyson, who was a senior economist in the Clinton White House, came out with a very strong op-ed piece over the weekend saying we need a second stimulus. I think that is the consensus among Democratic thinkers right now. And, yes, I think the president should probably have the balls to say this is what I believe in and push it. It’s true, that would be publicly difficult, but this is not a moment for milquetoast measures. Things are really rough. Things are really tough, despite – or more likely because of – the huge stimulus Obama and his Democratic accomplices shoved through Congress last year.  Yet in Liberal Land, drastically increased government spending is like Jello, there’s always room for more.  Additionally, it takes a manly man to counsel Americans that spending even more is our only way out of economic woes. A man who’s really got that ol’ testicular virility.  Chrystia Freeland courageously shares that blunt advice with The One.  Even if it means turning CNN into PG-rated fare.

Hannity, Bozell Tackle Media Bias Surrounding Ground Zero Mosque Issue

The mainstream media are telling us that “it’s the fringe that’s upset” about the Ground Zero mosque, but polling data show “it’s 70 percent of the American people,” NewsBusters publisher Brent Bozell noted on Friday’s “Hannity” program. “That means every conservative, every moderate, and some liberals too” think the Ground Zero mosque is in extremely poor taste, leaving only “the far left and people still dropping acid,” who fail to see why it’s controversial, the Media Research Center founder quipped. “If Barack Obama runs on this in 2012, he will make Jimmy Carter look good by comparison…. This is how bad this position is, and everybody understands it except for the press,” Bozell argued later in the “Media Mash” segment. For the segment’s audio, click here to download the MP3. FNC Cites NB Item Noting NYT Buried Story of Tom DeLay Charges Being Dropped

On Saturday’s Fox News Watch on FNC, substitute host Eric Shawn picked up on a NewsBusters item which recounted that, after the Justice Department dropped charges against former House Republican Leader Tom DeLay, the New York Times buried the news on page A-18 while the Washington Post, by contrast, made room for the story on its front page. Shawn: “The Justice Department has dropped its corruption investigation of the former Congressman after six years. DeLay was probed primarily for his involvement with disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff. It hit the front pages of the Washington Post on Wednesday. Guess what, the New York Times, page A-18.” After the FNC host asked if there was a media double standard at play, regular panel member Jim Pinkerton of the New America Foundation cited Tim Graham of the Media Research Center – parent organization of NewsBusters – by name. Pinkerton: “Oh, absolutely. As Tim Graham at the Media Research Center was the first to point out, you know, look, this was huge news at the time when they thought he’d be convicted of all sorts of stuff. When he’s exonerated, notice no story.” Below is a transcript of the relevant segment from the Saturday, August 21, Fox News Watch, with critical portions in bold : ERIC SHAWN: Well, that’s former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay. He is off the hook. The Justice Department has dropped its corruption investigation of the former Congressman after six years. DeLay was probed primarily for his involvement with disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff. It hit the front pages of the Washington Post on Wednesday. Guess what, the New York Times, page A-18. Jim, double standard when it comes to covering this? JIM PINKERTON, NEW AMERICA FOUNDATION: Oh, absolutely. As Tim Graham at the Media Research Center was the first to point out, you know, look, this was huge news at the time when they thought he’d be convicted of all sorts of stuff. When he’s exonerated, notice no story. SHAWN: How come? PINKERTON: I think it’s media bias, just a hunch. SHAWN: Ellis, you’re a columnist, yeah, what? ELLIS HENICAN, NEWSDAY COLUMNIST: Yeah, it might just be, Jim, the media. I mean, every single newspaper and television news organization I’ve ever been around spends a whole lot more time talking about charges than they do of acquittals. You might even ask Blago about that, in fact. His almost acquittal this week didn’t get nearly the coverage of all of those tapes, all those tapes. RICH LOWRY, NATIONAL REVIEW: That got a lot of play. That was an exception. Blago did get front-page coverage. JUDITH MILLER, FOX NEWS CONTRIBUTOR: In fact, the media were much busier covering Blago than they were Tom DeLay. SHAWN: Blago, by the way, is on Fox News Sunday this weekend, so we can all spend some time on planet Blago. LOWRY: He’s a very interesting media story in his own right because he’s managed to make himself into a C-level celebrity, and that’s enduring value no matter what happens to his legal case. SHAWN: Does that help with the legal case? LOWRY: It might a little bit. It might, you know, help with the jury. PINKERTON: If you’re playing to one juror, as he seemed to be doing in the case, that guy who hung the jury on 23 of 24 counts. LOWRY: She hung him on one – selling the Senate seat. The others were more evenly split. SHAWN: What does it say about the confluence of the media and the criminal justice system? When you have a DeLay who was being investigated, on the front page it’s all over the place, and then it gets dropped. And when it gets dropped, you don’t hear anything about it. LOWRY: The interesting thing about the Blago case there’s a backlash in the media now against Patrick Fitzgerald- SHAWN: Mr. Hero. LOWRY: -and the tendency of the media is to soak up these allegations and just believe the prosecutor is always right. There’s a real backlash now which is a healthy one. HENICAN: Yeah, but remember that the drama is always the bigger story than the whimper at the end. I think that’s true in all cases. PINKERTON: (INAUDIBLE) …point that just shouldn’t get lost. And that is, I can remember Ray Donovan, the Secretary of Labor under the Reagan administration, he was indicted or something, couple of years of trials, he was acquitted, and he just went before the cameras and said, okay, “Now where do I go to get my reputation back?” HENICAN: Poor Blago. SHAWN: Yeah, came down the front steps of the Bronx courthouse and no one could give the answer.

Network Morning Shows Ignore Resignation of USDA Official Who Made Racist Comments at NAACP Meeting

On Monday, Andrew Breitbart, on his blog Big Government, revealed video of a Department of Agriculture official making racially charged comments at a 2009 NAACP meeting. While the media were quick to jump on the civil rights organization accusing the tea party of racism last week, they have failed to provide any coverage of this controversy. The comments were made by the USDA’s Georgia Director of Rural Development Shirley Sherrod at a 2009 NAACP Freedom Fund dinner in Georgia. As the video clearly shows, Sherrod’s description of discriminating against white farmers was well received by the audience. The comments, which were reported throughout the day Monday on Fox News, stirred so much controversy that Sherrod resigned Monday night and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack was forced to issue a statement on the matter: ““There is zero tolerance for discrimination at USDA, and I strongly condemn any act of discrimination against any person.” As NewsBusters’ Noel Sheppard earlier reported , none of the network evening news broadcasts touched the story on Monday . On Tuesday, the CBS Early Show, NBC’s Today, and ABC’s Good Morning America were all silent on the controversy and resignation. However, all three morning shows did manage to focus on a recent verbal gaffe made by Sarah Palin. —Kyle Drennen is a news analyst at the Media Research Center. You can follow him on Twitter here.

Embattled Weigel Calls Sources of Criticism of His Ideology ‘Partisan Anti-Media Groups’

At this point, we all know the Dave Weigel saga, which is as a so-called blogger for The Washington Post, he made some disparaging remarks about the people he covered as a conservative beat blogger. That eventually led to his resignation at the Post and he addressed it on CNN’s July 4 “Reliable Sources.” Weigel was asked by host Howard Kurtz if in this day and age it was “an uncomfortable fit” for someone to have a lot of opinions and still be a blogger. And according to Weigel, there was despite attacks from what he called “partisan anti-media groups.” “I think there’s room for it. I mean, but I think it’s going to be the source of a lot of attacks from, you know, partisan anti-media groups who just want to score points against mainstream media organizations, ” Weigel said. “So, people have to be ready for that. You have to be ready to defend your opinions.” Newsbusters and the Media Research Center have documented Weigel’s missteps during his brief stint at the Post and even prior to the leaked Journolist e-mails , so it’s not clear if he’s referring to us, but it’s certainly a possibility. Still as a member of the fourth estate, Weigel doesn’t believe he should have to defend his biases, if they’re in private. “I don’t think you should have to defend the opinions you have in private, because people are — every day, you know, people who are in this town are exchanging private opinions,” he continued. “They would not broadcast them. They say things at dinner parties with lots of people around that they would not want out. You shouldn’t have to say — you shouldn’t have to explain that away. But you should be allowed to say I’m a blogger with these opinions and I’m breaking news, my readers know what they’re getting when they read this website. I think that’s perfectly defensible just for me in a different publication.”
