Keep Your Head Up: ‘Hate U Give’ Star Opens Up About Sexual Assault

A mandla Stenberg  recently opened up about sexual assault and the pain that she has grappled with because of it. ‘The Hate U Give’ star, who is only 19, detailed her trauma in a recent op-ed for Teen Vogue that was as transparent as it is poignant. RELATED:  What You Need To Know About Ford And Kavanaugh’s Senate Testimonies In reaction to Dr. Christine Blasey Ford ‘s sexual assault testimony about now-confirmed Supreme Court judge  Brett Kavanaugh  last month, Stenberg shared the difficult parts of her past. Her accounts of two sexual assaults were detailed and emotional. “My breath was the tool I relied on when I ended up in a foreign country on a three-hour train ride to find an emergency contraceptive,” Stenberg said. “The night before, what started as a consensual experience had turned forceful. Painful things had been done to my body that made me feel broken and disposable. I was unable to consent to them, and was silenced verbally and physically when I protested.” “The moment you speak out about assault, you’ve entered a battle where you’ve been appointed defender of your own legitimacy.” https://t.co/v9PGcZmHxa — Teen Vogue (@TeenVogue) October 8, 2018 Stenberg carefully explained how she was confronted by a myriad of feelings: guilt, shame, blame and vulnerability. She then spoke up for survivors who have to find their voice after trauma. “The moment you speak out about assault, you’ve entered a battle where you’ve been appointed defender of your own legitimacy,” Stenberg said. “You are given the responsibility of, after having just been subjected to devastating trauma, navigating impossible protocols, lest you be charged as the culprit in your own attack. You’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t … We should not be condemned for being unsure of how to move through pain.” Stenberg acknowledged her pain, thanked Dr. Ford’s and other survivors’ for sharing their stories and offered encouraging and healing words to those who have experienced assault. In return, many people have taken to social media to thank the actress. “To whomever may need to know this: It is not your fault. It is not your responsibility to figure this out by yourself. It is not your responsibility to sacrifice your comfort to gratify others.” Thank you @amandlastenberg for speaking out. Political Outlet ‘The Hill’ Doesn’t Know The Difference Between Susan Rice And Condoleezza Rice

Y ep, all Black folks look alike according to media sources from  Fox News to The Hill. The Hill, a popular political outlet since 1994, covered Susan Rice , Obama’s former National Security Advisor, who is considering running against Maine GOP Sen. Susan Collins for the U.S. Senate. Collins voted for  Brett Kavanaugh  on the Supreme Court and has received tons of backlash because she is a woman who voted against a woman who was sexually assaulted. While covering the story, The Hill used a photo of Condoleezza Rice , who was Secretary of State under President  George W. Bush . One user wrote , “somebody googled ‘Black Rice’ Condeleeza’s picture came up.” Another tweeted , “Don’t they have fact checkers, or editors, or I dunno, any Black people on staff over there?” Maybe this will further inspire Susan Rice to run against Collins. In case you missed it, Obama’s former White House Communications Director Jen Psaki tweeted, “who wants to run for Senate in Maine? there will be an army of supporters with you.” Rice replied, “Me.” Me https://t.co/93qNxN7Ky9 — Susan Rice (@AmbassadorRice) October 5, 2018 Don’t get too excited. According to ABC News , Rice spoke at a panel during The New Yorker Festival and said, “I made the tweet, I later elaborated that this wasn’t where my head was.” She continued, “But I have been moved by the enthusiasm. I’m going to give it due consideration after the midterms.” Nonetheless, The Hill, Fox News and everyone else who think all Black folks look alike need to do better. Taylor Swift Stuns the World, Endorses Two Democrats in Tennessee

She’s sorry, but the old Taylor Swift can’t come to the phone right now. Why? Because she’s busy knocking on doors and canvassing neighborhoods in Tennessee to make sure everyone is informed and registered to vote in the 2018 midterm elections. Indeed, the singer has broken from an often-criticized tradition and done more than merely dip a toe in political waters. She’s gone right ahead and jumped in with two feet. On Sunday evening, the beloved solo artist shared the photo above, along with a lengthy Instagram message that endorsed a pair of candidates in the November 6 election for various important offices. “In the past I’ve been reluctant to publicly voice my political opinions, but due to several events in my life and in the world in the past two years, I feel very differently about that now,” Swift said to open her statement. She continued: “I always have and always will cast my vote based on which candidate will protect and fight for the human rights I believe we all deserve in this country. “I believe in the fight for LGBTQ rights, and that any form of discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender is WRONG. “I believe that the systemic racism we still see in this country towards people of color is terrifying, sickening and prevalent.” In the eyes of many critics, Swift had come under fire many times in the past for never using her famous platform for the greatest good. While fellow superstars such as Beyonce had not only backed certain candidates, but given speeches and performances on their behalf, Swift had remained out of the political arena entirely. Some were especially appalled by this decision in 2016 when there was such a clear choice between a candidate who supported women’s rights (Hillary Clinton) and, well… Donald Trump . “I believe that the systemic racism we still see in this country towards people of color is terrifying, sickening and prevalent,” Taylor added in this new message. “I cannot vote for someone who will not be willing to fight for dignity for ALL Americans, no matter their skin color, gender or who they love.” Why is Swift speaking out now? Likely because Republican senators just confirmed Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court — despite one notable accusation of sexual assault against him, along with pretty clear temperment concerns. Perhaps with this in mind, Swift went on to specifically throw her support behind two candidates from her home state. “Running for Senate in the state of Tennessee is a woman named Marsha Blackburn. As much as I have in the past and would like to continue voting for women in office, I cannot support Marsha Blackburn. “Her voting record in Congress appalls and terrifies me. “She voted against equal pay for women. She voted against the Reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, which attempts to protect women from domestic violence, stalking, and date rape. She believes businesses have a right to refuse service to gay couples. She also believes they should not have the right to marry. “These are not MY Tennessee values.” In races that appear rather close and which could legitimately impact the country, Swift therefore announced the candidates who have her backing: “I will be voting for Phil Bredesen for Senate and Jim Cooper for House of Representatives. “Please, please educate yourself on the candidates running in your state and vote based on who most closely represents your values. For a lot of us, we may never find a candidate or party with whom we agree 100% on every issue, but we have to vote anyway.” As you might expect, taking a partisan side has elicited mixed reactions on Twitter. A handful of users are for the move: Others have scoffed at the move: (Editor’s Note: Since Kanye supposedly “ended” Swift by interrupting her speech at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, the two highest-grossing tours in the world belong to… Taylor Swift.) This, of course, is the danger of getting involved in politics: you may engender some serious opposition. But Swift must think it is worth the fight and the criticism in order to speak her mind and espouse her values. This is how Swift concluded her unexpected post: So many intelligent, thoughtful, self-possessed people have turned 18 in the past two years and now have the right and privilege to make their vote count. But first you need to register, which is quick and easy to do. October 9th is the LAST DAY to register to vote in the state of TN. Go to vote.org and you can find all the info. Happy Voting! We wish the very same to you, Taylor. View Slideshow: Taylor Swift Albums: The Definitive Countdown!

Georgia Removed Scores Of Voter From Its Rolls As Stacey Abrams Tries To Make History, Lawsuit Says

More:

G eorgia’s Republican secretary of state, who’s competing against Stacey Abrams for governor, allegedly oversaw the removal of thousands of likely Abrams supporters from the state’s voting rolls. See Also: GOP Ramps Up Voter Suppression Efforts Ahead Of Upcoming Elections A group of voting rights organizations announced a lawsuit on Tuesday against Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp for using a racially-biased method that has purged about 700,000 voters ahead of the Nov. 6 midterm elections, WXIA-TV reported. The organizations reportedly include Jesse Jackson ’s Rainbow-PUSH Coalition, the Georgia Coalition for the People’s Agenda and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Kemp has failed to notify the affected voters who will likely be turned away at the polls on Election Day, the suit alleged. “What has taken place here in Georgia is an insult to all of the efforts and accomplishments that we have done throughout this country,”  Charles Steele , president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, said at a press conference Tuesday about the Black struggle to win voting rights. This comes as Abrams attempts to make history as the nation’s first elected Black female governor. Civil rights lawsuit filed against Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp | WJBF https://t.co/j7jGoqjV3D — The Voting News (@VotingNews) October 3, 2018 This case is part of a larger Republican voter suppression effort, according to activists. In June, the U.S. Supreme Court, in a 5-4 split decision, approved Ohio’s practice of removing registered voters from its rolls if they haven’t participated in recent elections. About a dozen other states controlled by Republicans wanted to adopt Ohio’s system following the court’s ruling. “Georgia has been more aggressive than Ohio in removing names,” Nse Ufot , executive director of New Georgia Project, told NewsOne , adding that the practice disproportionately affects people of color. Her organization “stands in solidarity” with the groups that filed the suit. Kemp is accused of using the Interstate Voter Registration Crosscheck Program to maintain Georgia’s list of eligible voters. The inaccurate system is seriously flawed , Ufot said. Meanwhile, Kemp has vehemently denied the voter suppression allegation, claiming in a statement that the lawsuit “has no merit” because Georgia hasn’t used the Crosscheck Program. Jenelle Evans to Nathan Griffith: You Will NEVER Take Kaiser From Me!

Every time we think the custody battle between Jenelle Evans and Nathan Griffith has reached its ugliest point, it somehow gets worse. And because these two insist on duking it out on Twitter, we know pretty much everything that's transpiring between them. There was a time when it looked like Nathan would have no problem attaining full custody of son Kaiser, but these days Jenelle thinks she has the upper hand. Check out the gallery below for our full breakdown of this contentious situation …   1. Stuck In the Middle Poor Kaiser is at the heart of an increasingly combative feud between his parents — and it looks as though there’s no end in sight. 2. Controversial Mom Jenelle currently has primary physical custody of the boy, but she’s making it very easy for Nathan to argue in court that she’s an unfit parent. 3. A Change of Heart For a long time, Nathan appeared to be accepting of the situation. But for the past year, with the help of his mother and girlfriend, he’s been waging war against Jenelle. 4. The Fight For Kaiser Perhaps wisely, Nathan has made his battle against Jenelle very public, and he frequently posts updates on social media. 5. Full Transparency For one thing, he wants his custody battle to be fully documented. On top of that, he claims Jenelle has made it impossible for him to contact her through any means other than Twitter. 6. Jenelle Logic Why Jenelle would block her baby daddy’s phone number, but not block him on Twitter is anyone’s guess. Whatever the case, it’s made for some amusing exchanges … View Slideshow

David Eason Says "All Trans are Perverts" in This Bigoted Rant

This NOT just in: David Eason hates gay people. The husband of Jenelle Evans was fired by MTV several months ago for so often sharing this viewpoint, not that his dismissal caused Eason to reconsider his opinion or keep his social media mouth shut or anything of that nature. Quite the opposite, in fact. The polarizing personality has said recently that he's proud to be a straight white redneck and that, of course, gay people suck . What about transgender individuals?  Eason expresses his close-minded and very ignorant take on them below… 1. Eason Has Been Ranting About Gay People for Awhile Dude is obsessed with the topic, bringing it up out of nowhere at times. Back in February, in response to a discussion online about parenting methods, he said to an Internet user: “Why don’t you go tell the homo and transgender parents to start teaching their kids better morals? Oh I forgot that’s supposed to be normal.” 2. You’re Fired! This was merely the latest example of Eason being a horrible bigot, which led to MTV firing him a few days later and releasing this statement: “David Eason’s personal comments do not reflect the views of MTV. With six weeks left of production on Teen Mom 2, effective immediately, we are ending our relationship with him.” 3. So… Why are We Still Talking About Him? Because he’s still married to Jenelle and because he keeps saying such terrible stuff. Just consider his latest ranting, raving and insulting on Facebook… 4. It Started with This Meme We assume the first photo here, as shared by Eason, is a reference to the ongoing controversy over whether or not Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh sexually assaulted women back in the early 1980s… while the second is a reference to many people out there being in favor of transgender individuals using whichever restroom with which they identify. 5. … And He’s Off As you might expect, this meme generated many comments from users and many, many ridiculous comments from Eason. 6. Being Transgender is Not Okay, Eason Has Always Argued View Slideshow

Time’s Up Adds Powerful Black Woman To Team Amid Cosby And Kavanaugh Hell

More:

T ime’s Up will presumably be stepping up its efforts against sexual harassment with the addition of a new leader. The organization has enlisted WNBA President Lisa Borders , a Black woman, to become its inaugural President and Chief Executive Officer. RELATED: Time’s Up Just Made A Major Move On Their Grind To Fight Sexual Harassment Borders will be leaving her prominent WNBA role for the new position after three successful seasons, the league announced Tuesday. She said she planned on still supporting the league at Time’s Up. She was also starting the role at a significant time with several women who have shared their assault accusations about convicted actor Bill Cosby and Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh . What exactly could be Borders first orders of business at the anti-sexual harassment organization? Just announced: WNBA President Lisa Borders is stepping down from her position to become the first-ever President and Chief Executive Officer of Time’s Up. NBA Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum will oversee the WNBA on an interim basis. https://t.co/XfayEm6xKZ — WNBA (@WNBA) October 2, 2018 We are thrilled to welcome Lisa Borders as our first-ever President and CEO! https://t.co/xc3HrMv4ee — TIME'S UP (@TIMESUPNOW) October 2, 2018 First, Borders could be vocal about the organization’s push in calling for senators to stop Kavanaugh’s confirmation. There has been much talk about the FBI launching a sexual assault investigation into Kavanaugh as Dr. Christine Blasey Ford and other women have come forward with allegations. Time’s Up is, of course, in a pivotal position to press this issue, especially with the help of Borders. Call your senators to demand that there be no vote on Kavanaugh’s confirmation until the FBI finishes a thorough and complete investigation with no artificial time line. On Monday, Time’s Up announced its involvement in supporting an open letter by Reel Equity urging the entertainment industry to close the pay disparity for women. Tarana Burke, Kamala Harris: Black Women Take A Stand At Kavanaugh Hearing

Read the rest here:

T hursday’s Senate confirmation hearing involving Christine Blasey Ford and Supreme Court nominee  Brett Kavanaugh provided the latest opportunity for Black women to stand up against sexual assault. RELATED: What You Need To Know About Ford And Kavanaugh’s Senate Testimonies Dozens of Black women demonstrated against Kavanaugh  — the object of Trump’s undying devotion — outside of the Senate building where both Ford and the nominee offered testimonies. Black women also went in on Kavanaugh inside the Senate building. Tarana Burke , the MeToo movement founder, was front and center during Ford’s testimony. These men are wholly uninterested and unmoved by this woman’s words…Dr. Ford has to talk about the worst trauma of her life in front of them. This is the reality of being survivor of sexual assault in this country. #WeBelieveDrFord #WeBelieveSurvivors #metooMVMT pic.twitter.com/WtLLG06okI — Tarana (@TaranaBurke) September 27, 2018 “These men are wholly uninterested and unmoved by this woman’s words…Dr. Ford has to talk about the worst trauma of her life in front of them. This is the reality of being survivor of sexual assault in this country,” Burke tweeted from the Senate hearing. Listening to this women’s voice shake as she pushes through this moment…my heart. #WeBelieveDrFord #WeBelieveSurvivors #metooMVMT — Tarana (@TaranaBurke) September 27, 2018 “This is not a trial for Dr. Ford. It’s a job interview for Judge Kavanaugh. Is this the best we can do…” Yes, @SenFeinstein — Tarana (@TaranaBurke) September 27, 2018 Of course, California Sen.  Kamala Harris , who has also been outspoken in opposing Kavanaugh, had some strong statements to deliver during the hearing. She affirmed and defended Ford, who was relentlessly questioned about her story of sexual assault against Kavanaugh. “You are not on trial,” Harris said, knowing that Republican senators were skeptical about the college professor’s character, not just her account. “You are sitting here before members of the United States Senate Judiciary Committee because you had the courage to come forward [and], as you have said, you believe it was your civic duty.” Another Black woman also had a moment during the Ford-Kavanaugh hearing: Anita Hill . Senator Dianne Feinstein , the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, referenced Hill during her opening statement. She recalled a 1991 trip to the airport in which saw a crowd watching Hill’s sexual assault testimony about then-Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas . She used Hill to make a powerful point. “How women are treated in the United States, with this kind of concern, is really wanting a lot of reform,” Feinstein said. Black women clearly communicated their viewpoints on Kavanaugh, and they showed no sign of backing down. Lindsey Graham Wants To Remind You Judge Brett Kavanough Is Not Bill Cosby

J udge Brett Kavanaugh  and Dr. Christine Blasey Ford   were testifying Thursday about sexual assault accusations against the potential next Supreme Court justice. Ford claimed he assaulted her in the summer of 1982. Kavanaugh denied all of the allegations and said the hearing was a “national disgrace.” The ugly episode on Capitol Hill prompted South Carolina  Sen. Lindsey Graham  to have a temper tantrum and twice reference fallen television icon Bill Cosby . See Also: Bill Cosby Sentenced To 3 To 10 Years In Prison For Sexual Assault Conviction While addressing the Democrats who were questioning Kavanaugh fairly, especially considering hasn;t been an FBI investigation, Graham roared, “Boy, you all want power! God, I hope you never get it. I hope the American people can see through this sham, that you knew about it and you held it. You had no intention to protect Dr. Ford. She is as much a victim as you are.” Pivoting to Kavanaugh, he continued: “If you’re looking for a fair process, you came to the wrong town at the wrong time, my friend! Do you say you have been through hell?” Kavanaugh whined, “I have been through hell and then some.” “This is not a job interview; this is hell!?’ Graham yelled, “This is going to destroy the ability of good people to come forward, because of this crap.” He added, “You’re supposed to be  Bill Cosby   when you’re a junior and senior in high school and then, all of a sudden, you got over it?!” See the foolishness below: What an awful reference. On Tuesday, Bill Cosby was  sentenced to three to 10 years in state prison months after being found guilty on three counts of aggravated incident assault.
